The Art Car Parade is my favorite city event of the year. We ALWAYS try to ensure we'll be in town for it. Hosted by The Orange Show, it's a free parade featuring hundreds of art cars. Although it's "free," donations are encouraged! Parade is usually along Allen Parkway with the downtown skyline as the perfect backdrop (it was downtown for a short period). The Houston Art Car Parade is truly a one of a kind experience. The event occurs every year in April in downtown Houston. More than just a parade, there are several events during the week, such as the sneak peak event on Discovery Green on Thursday, and the Art Car ball on Friday, that lead up the grand parade on Saturday. The parade features a string of eccentric cars and even a few that challenge the traditional definition of a car - rolling port-a-potty, anyone? Each car is hand decorated with paint, mirrors, maybe even a couple of Billy Bass singing fish. Some cars have a more reserved expression while others go all out with music and displays that are larger than life. It's definitely a fun watch. I've been going to the parade for several years now and enjoy it every time. It's a fun event for families, friends and neighbors, guests from out of town, and locals alike. I recommend bringing some folding chairs and a small cooler for some drinks and snacks. In case you forget, there are several vendors that post up along Allen Parkway and near City Hall to purchase drinks, the tribute Art Car beer from Saint Arnold, and bites. Parking can get a little tricky so consider bringing a wagon to transport your belongings to a spot along the route. Definitely check it out! read more

Having been born and raised in Houston, I'm sad to say I've never experienced seeing the art car parade until now in its 38th year. I've been to the art car museum nearby and miss the parade every year until after the fact. I will set a calendar reminder to go again next year. I honestly didn't know what to expect. I can walk to Allen Parkway from my place. Allen Parkway is closed off from 7 am to 6 pm, and downtown streets near City Hall closes at 1 pm. It was too hot to walk it, and I'd have to cross Washington Ave., which isn't always the safest, so I ubered and got dropped off a block or two away and walked the rest through a neighborhood. The art cars are parked all along the outskirts of Sam Houston Park through Allen Parkway. This year, it's seems like about 280 cars/bikes/motorized vehicles registered. There's a variety. Not all show up. I met this nice lady who explained that sometimes they go to the Thursday show prior. I read a review that there are a lot of kids who join the parade and how it's not meant for them to be part of the parade but local artists. I disagree. I saw elementary and high school students along with teachers. Some even did it as a family. It's important to keep art around, and kids are creative. It's a way to express how they feel and have fun with it. There was a variety of bands, all cultures, and people of all ages participating. I felt safe because there were police around on four wheelers. The police and volunteers even checked on the cars that couldn't quite make it through the whole route due to a flat tire or engine problems. If you get there at 11 am, you can see the cars up close and talk to the artists and take photos. I will say that while the actual parade starts at 2 pm, it takes about 30-45 minutes before it gets to Allen Parkway near Eleanor Tinsley and Montrose. If you want to see all the cars and get out early, go closer to downtown. You can purchase VIP tickets for $250 which comes with food and drink or seats at the Reserved Grandstands at The Heritage Society. I think they were $45. Proceeds go towards The Orange Show and all the art. That's my next go-to! It's most likely going to be hot out, so bring an umbrella, pitch a tent for shade, or bring a blanket and sit near a tree. You can bring seats, coolers and food/drink. There's also food vendors and restrooms spread throughout the route. This was a fun event, and I'm glad I finally went out to see it. I went solo, and it was nice to meet other people there who came out to watch. It's the world's biggest art car event. Houston is about the only major city that does something like this. I love the Houston Art Car Parade! It's part of a four-day celebration that brings in hundreds of wild and amazing vehicles from all over the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.The parade and its associated events occur every year during the second weekend in April. Expect lots of variety among the cars. You'll see everything from painted cars and lowriders to crazy contraptions, SLABs, art bikes, and more. Quite a few of the Houston area schools participate, and I love to see students getting involved! I usually go on the day of the awards ceremony, not to attend the ceremony itself, but just to walk around and see some of the cars up close. The creativity on display is impressive, and it's fun checking them out. Kids love it! Whether you live in Houston, but haven't been, or you're visiting from out of town, I highly recommend this artsy, interesting, and uber unique Houston experience. read more

Fun for free but my $250 was wasted on VIP seats. The food and drinks were good but the riff raff in the VIP bleachers didn't belong there and targeted us for harassment by standing in front of us to purposefully block our view. When we asked them to step aside, they went ballistic. We moved, and they followed us. We left. If the vendors (I am guessing) are allowed to bring guests, they should be told to behave. Generally, the promoters should put signs on the fence warning people not to gather there but to view the parade from their seats. read more

Tickets were $200 each plus fees to be told we were not given seating like year before. Representative rudely told me if I wasn't happy with the "new" seating arrangements I could get a refund...Really??? Total BS this year. Been attending 10 years and early purchase price wrnt from $125 to $204 this year for what??? A seat in the grandstands first come first serve??? This is the last time I will support the Art Car event. Total disrespect by main representative? By the way prior to me speaking to him he addressed a lady who had purchased the same ticket as I did and he sat her at a reserved table...what??? Just because he knew her...he was so rude to us. Then I was told to sit at any non-reserved table available which we did. However, once we took our seats we were told that we couldn't sit there. I advised the person telling us that what we were told and I refused to move. It was a cluster this year and I'm not the only one treated in this manner. Needless to say the way we were addressed by this male "main contact" at the registration table is unacceptable. As we looked around it was obvious that there were several tables that were not reserved which told the true story of the under attendance there was this year. Last year the seating went further around from where we sat indicating to me that their numbers were down from last year. This is in no way a reason to be disrepected by this year's committe and main male representative. Change your seating to how it was done in 2024 or you will lose more patrons/donors in the future. read more

Definitely a fun Houston experience! Aside from parking, it is a completely free event and not something you are very day or in other cities! I have been twice and really enjoyed it both times. If you get there early enough you can bring folding chairs and set up a spot to watch the parade from. The shady spots definitely go first, so bring a hat or some sunscreen if it's a bright day! All the participants always seem to be having a great time and try to get the crowd engaged -- and they will have notably more energy at the start of the parade! Its definitely interesting here. Well, lots of people came early to wait for the parade to start. They showed up at around 10 and started lining up. I was at work so I had to look from my window. It makes me wonder why would someone spend so much and then drive it in a parade. Its good entertainment for me. But not sure if the car owners has some kind of sponsor. Well we did see a few interesting car. Like one that is dressed up as Chewy. One looked like Star Wars. Its cool to watch. Also note that they do block off the road. So come early. The art car parade is not a once a year event. I know they have their big annual event on Allen Parkway when it's ridiculously hot outside. But, the art cars parade around town other times of the year as well. I recently saw an illuminated art car parade around Market Square in downtown. It was a much smaller version of what normally takes place in May, but also during a much cooler time of year. The art cars are pretty cool, but it is up to who chooses to participate. I do like that you can get up close and person to the cars afterward. If you haven't seen an art card parade, you need to see it at least once. read more

This is a free event if you don't want to pay for to be seated and covered from the rain. First time going there and what amazing talent in the design of the cars. Truly worth every second standing waiting for the next car to pass by. I love places where you see creativity and talented work done to anything. Something so common as a car all dressed up by kids, adults - just breath taking and great deal of fun. Too bad today we only got to see a part of it due to some torrential rain - but hey; it had been a while since a ran somewhere while a monsoon was over my head. Next year count me in again - this time I'll be seated plus its for a great cause. Fun for any age! Just beware! You may need an umbrella or else. I lost count on how many times I have been here before. But it is a must for anyone that has never been to it before. This is a free event to anyone who would like to stand in the sun or rain. If you choice to pay for a seat and be covered from the rain or sun. This was the first time for my son and he was amazing from the talent in the design of the cars. He could not believe what some people do to their cars. Truly worth every second standing waiting for the next car to pass by. I try to make it to the Art Car Parade every year and I'm really not even a fan of parades. What I like most about this parade is that you can come in 4 hours early and walk along the parade path as the cars are lining up and talk to the artists, take pictures, and it really makes it feel like it's your parade and not just some corporate event like the 4th of July show where only those whose companies bought VIP tickets for them to be behind the chain linked fence can get the best seats. It really is a huge event and you don't realize it until right around 2 pm when it's about to start and you see everybody who was hiding from the sun come back out. Speaking of which, it's usually very hot with very little to shelter you from the sun. That's my review of the event. I know I'm reviewing weather but that's part of the event so for someone wanting to go see it, it's important to note. Parking is also kind of a mess but then what isn't in Houston? Just bring a lot of water and don't rely on the vendors too much. read more

I don't think I'll attend again. I've gone each year for over 20 years. It's totally lost its cred. All these kids? Really? Elementary schools? It's insulting to those who have real talent and dedication to the craft. And they all want to walk along with the car. Lord, the parade moves like a snail. If you want a place for kids, have some sort of kinder parade at another time. There are also too many entries. The parade needs to be juried. There were regular cars with a few items attached with command strips. There were a couple that just had a nice paint job. And too much corporate involvement. Many of the cars used to have a message. One of my favorite parades in Houston. It's interesting to see art in the form of an automobile. They have everything from just paintings on the side to mythical fire breathing creatures. The Houston Art Car Parade is a unique free event that happens every year in late May. I came here with my family during my sister's graduate at Rice University a few years ago. You can line up on Allen Parkway, and people bring their lawn chairs. It does get hot in Houston in May, so bring water and hats. You'll have to come early to get one of the shaded spots. Otherwise, it is not too crowded. There were a lot of really creative and wild ideas: chicken car, latrine car, fish car, fruit car. Some are absolutely hilarious. I volunteered at the 2015 Art Car Parade.I arrived a volunteer check in booth downtown.A volunteer organizer gave me a golf cart.I needed to pick up a judge.I drove the car on Allen parkway.I saw many people. I saw a " Big Mouth' Art car. I was excited.I returned to downtown.I worked at a beverage booth.Around 2pm, the art cars started moving. I had a great view at the beverage booth.I saw a " Crapper car".Fortunately, the car's smell was not bad. I saw the big mouth car again.We were ready for selling beer to the big mouth.The mouth didn't buy our beer.No sales. I saw a 'President Obama and Kennedy car" I was really afraid of assassination.i believe nobody killed both of them. This was a great event.I saw mayor Parker.We were concerned about rain. No rain.we were lucky.I would like to participate in the parade next year.What's my car? Maybe, I will make some sushi car and sell sushi to people.See you next year! read more

I have tried to do this for 3 years, just never worked out until this year. I have to say, totally worth it! It is kids friendly and since it is May, not too hot in Houston yet. Try to sit under a shade area (How can you tell if you are from Texas? Texans always gather under the shade. I got that joke from our tour guide at LBJ Ranch). Add to your bucket list! read more

This is the MOST AMAZING THING EVER, unless you go more than once*. Your mind will be blown with what can be done to a car, truck, bicycle and still be drivable. It's a fun time to see a tenth of Houston and out of town guests also looking at these mind-blowing vehicles of creativity. Don't let an innate fear of crowds and parking in Houston deter you from seeing this parade at least once in your life. Alternatively, you could cab it or bike it (follow the road rules) or walk it. Perhaps in future years there will be a park and ride type shuttle service available. I do understand Houstonians would fold up their cars into a briefcase if given the option (so they don't have to hoof it too far from a parking space), but park and ride shuttle would solve many problems surrounding the parking issue. *That's so hater of me (or is that h8r?), but after fighting the crowds for a parking space a few years in a row, sitting in a vehicle while another driver fights the crowds, humidity, heat, lots of "oh my gosh, look they are in the bud of the flower" (where have those people been the past twenty years?), dogs, dog poo, screaming kids, drunk adults getting sunstroke, it all becomes a study in mosquito-bites and cranky-pants (or sundress). read more

This review is for their VIP tickets, which they are calling VIPit, at least this year. Do not under any circumstances waste your money on this, unless you just want to donate to The Orange Show, or are willing to pay $125 for an assigned bleacher seat and don't care about the food, drinks, or atmosphere. Let me state my major objection up front and then I'll go on to the subsidiary complaints. The event was advertised as having "gourmet food and drink." I quote exactly. Riiiiiiiight. Not. That, however, was not even my major objection. Major objection: There was nowhere to sit to consume this supposedly gourmet food and drink. For $125 each, and given the description as "gourmet," I really was picturing a chair with a place at a table in front of it - not unreasonably, I think. It was also advertised as having "free parking." Again I quote exactly. We set the GPS to the address given (1100 Bagby) and encountered no parking, other than street and paid lots, before we encountered blocked-off streets. We tried calling The Orange Show but got only an answering machine - you'd think they'd have some kind of info number for parade day, but no. I had also attached a message to my $250 online purchase asking for detailed parking directions, but received no reply. Soooooo, we wound up parking under Bayou Place, for an additional $7 to the $250 we had already spent, and walking several blocks. I complained at the gate of the lack of parking instructions on the website, and she said they were there under FAQ. Funny, I'd exhausted every resource on the web to find parking instructions for the VIPit and turned up nothing. Looking again now. First, who knew, or had reason to know, that they call their FAQs "Ask Rex"? Second, when you go there it just directs you to street and paid parking, not the supposedly free parking for the VIPit. Third, if you Google "Art Car Parade parking," what turns up at the top is info on the Art Car Ball and a map of the parade route, not any info on this supposedly free parking. Googling "Art Car VIPit" was similarly unhelpful. Now, the issues with the event itself, in addition to the lack of a chair and a place at a table to eat the "gourmet" food and the lack of the advertised free parking, at least that one could find. The "shaded bleacher seating," which I had foolishly interpreted as canopies of some sort (I should have researched this more - live and learn) turned out, in our section at least, to be trees that provided far from complete shade. Since my husband has had skin cancer, this was completely unacceptable. Some bleachers did have canopies, but not ours. The "gourmet food" was from such five-star places as Whole Foods, James Coney Island, Natachee's, etc., laid out on folding tables. Nothing wrong with these places, but "gourmet" is definitely false advertising. The event was terribly oversold for the amount of ground they had available - we were claustrophobic as soon as we walked in. There was little shade to be had except in the food pavilion (which was in a tent) and presumably indoors where the bathrooms were. At least they had indoor bathrooms, I'll give them that, although I didn't see them in person as we left no more than 10 minutes after arriving. We arrived an hour and a half early (it would have been two hours except for the free parking we couldn't find), picturing a nice event where we could sit in the shade and eat and drink. Not. Again, if you want to spend the money just for the bleacher seat, do. But don't expect anything nice in the two hours before the parade. read more

I have friends who hosted Art Car Parade parties at their Montrose home every year. We'd get together, eat, drink and walk down to the parade. It was tons of fun. They are moving from the Montrose area, so we had one last party this year to commemorate the fun times. The 2013 parade wasn't nearly as good as years past. It was still full of energy and there were quite a few interesting cars, but more bikes, golf carts, sponsored cars or "everyday art cars." Yeah, low riders are cool (not really), but do they really belong in the Art Car Parade? I'd rather see 30 cars with some real art, craftsmanship and ingenuity (like the armadillo car) than 300 kinda-sorta-artsy-cars-depending-on-your-interpretation-of-art-and-we-don't-wanna-offend-or-turn-anyone-away. I remember attending years 2001-2006 and really enjoying those parades. Though I think it's lost some of its charm, this is a great event for anyone new to Houston to do at least once. Oh, also, it says somewhere on their website that dogs aren't permitted on the parade route, but I'm not going to spend the day outside and not bring my dog. I'm on the street, on a sidewalk, so my dog is coming. She was on a leash the whole time and no one gave me any trouble about it. There were many other dogs there. read more

Always have loved the art car parade and it's definitely a good time. Family and kid friendly! My parents took me a few times when I was younger and I still love it to this day. The cars are totally outrageous and it's super fun to see! Make sure to bring sunscreen and arrive early for a good spot! read more

Although I am aware and admire the amount of time and effort most people put into these cars in order to display them at this parade, I am not very found of this occasion Yes it is very entertaining and the cars are fun to look at but both time I have gone it has been uncomfortably hot and the crazy amount of people there make it almost impossible to comfortably watch the parade I have gone twice and both times I couldn't fully enjoy myself The first time although my husband and I found a lovely location under some trees near the front of the street this young lady kept stepping right infront of my seat trying to take a picture of every single car driving by and that was rather irritating because half the time I had to try and see the parade around her...it was a frustrating situation because everyone in our area was seated except for her... The second time I went with my husband I was not even in the mood for going but he insisted since he loves cars...for me the first time last year had been good enough....either way he convinced me last minute and we went...of course by the time we got there we didn't have the chance to sit ourselves near the front and trying to see from where we placed my chair was impossible... I was forced to stand and watch by a street were people kept constantly crossing me...all throughout the parade none stop...it was back to being a frustrating expirience once again I would rather not go again but I will continue to go as long as my husband is up for it ... read more

It reminded me of a dusty circus in a small town. You can tell what cars are the 'veteran' cars....they need to be touched up!! I understand driving through is your time to shine but when your car isn't shining because of a layer of dust...you fail to shine too! read more

The cars line up on Allen Parkway beginning at 9:00 a.m. on parade day (the parade starts at 1:00 p.m.), so you can check out the cars, take pictures and talk to the artists. There are portapotties provided, but remember to bring water--it is after all May in Houston--and don't forget suncreen! For the Museum: Not really worth the time as only three cars are on display at any one time. Cars are changed out only once every three months. Save your time and effort and wait and see the Art Car Parade instead. read more

Wow! What a fun event. All kinds of car entries and the people watching is a good as it gets. The cars are awesome. We were invited by Team Carlagio, which is a truck with a dancing fountain synchronized to music. We were completely ripped off by Art Car Parade this year... NO VIP parking, NO nothing other than a single trailer bathroom next to a bunch of port-a-potties, (what a freaking joke!) NO food other than some chips or random items left unattended by the original vendors... total violation of Health dept standards and requirements. No commentary, No seating! No shade or covering, No waitstaff, No easy access to said bathrooms etc... the list goes on and on. OH and also our assigned section not only didn't exist but it was supposed to have been located at the tail end of the parade (according to security) where the exhibits were obviously done with performance. So we missed out on practically everything. I am disputing everything through my bank. Fucking fail. From a native houstonian, I've never felt so disrespected and cheated. By the way we spent over 1 hour trying to find the alleged VIP parking, and even more so with the entrance. We were sent in different directions every time and there was only 1 ONE entrance set up to admit people who purchased online. So fuck you if you came from a different direction,!which you most likely did if you bought tickets online. read more
