Do better for the kids Houston Astros!! Went to Kids day with my 3 kids --it was just a hot crowded room with long lines for some popcorn and the chance to win a Canes lanyard or keychain? Nuts! They had some cotton candy and ice cream that they ran out of by the time we made it through the long line. No management of the line (two lines were merging) plus overworked, grumpy and short staffed employees. Astro-logically speaking this is one of the best teams out there. Considering Houston is the 4th city of America, a huge market and one which likes sports as much as the next town (to some degree), it doesn't have a marquee team that everyone here loves. The Astros have, more than any other, emerged as that team. They're very beloved by the Latin community because of people like Altuve, and because of bringing championships to Houston, a city that needs and deserves them more than most. So yes, the Astros are a very good baseball team which represent the city of Houston better than any of the other teams, although the Rockets are a close second, in terms of putting things on the shelves of the trophy cabinet, and in representing the Latin community, which makes up more than half of Houston's population, and this is probably why you see more of these shirts around than any other team. The Rockets are kinda good and kind of popular, and manage to bring the odd big name to town which is great, and the Texans are just a major disappointment despite having the marquee stand up guy (JJ Watt) on the team for so long. Now we're going to see if they can step out of his enormous shadow. But regardless, the Texans aren't fanatically followed, and honestly that's what happens if you put a major NFL franchise, which is a sport mainly followed by some demographics, in a town that is not famous for those demographics. Houston should continue investing in the Dynamo, the Rockets, and especially the Astros since they're already by far the most beloved team in town. read more

You gotta root for the home team, so as a native Houstonian I am, be default, an Astros fan. Can't say I follow them closely or truly care too much about all the ~drama~ that comes along with them, so for this review I will focus more on the stadium atmosphere and general good feelings you get from watching team sports with thousands of fans. One fun thing about the Astros is their brand evolving over time; I love the classic red-orange-yellow stripe uniforms as well as their current orange and blue. Instantly recognizable insignia helps, too. Lots of fun theatrics await at a game including the moving train, enthusiastic announcers, and fireworks. Minute Maid Park is pretty unique in its setup and retractable roof as well. I think the Houston Astros are A-OK. On Yelp, that means three stars. Coincidentally, I just left a review for the New York Mets. The Astros and Mets both joined Major League Baseball in 1962. They took part in the 45-pick expansion draft in 1961, picking players from existing teams. Another smaller draft for the two teams was held in 1963. For the first three years of the team's existence, the Astros were actually known as the Colt .45s, a reference to the old-school Colt Single Action Army revolvers/wheel guns which were chambered in .45 Colt cartridges. It reminds me of the NBA's old Washington Bullets name (the Bullets name lasted from 1963 to 1997). Houston's MLB team name changed to the Astros in 1965, concurrent with the team's move to the Houston Astrodome. The name also recognized Houston as a center for the American space program (NASA's Johnson Space Center and Mission Control are located in Houston). In modern day, I know the Astros for two things: (1) their 2017 World Series championship and (2) the 2017-18 sign stealing scandal which may have resulted in said championship. The Astros went seven games against the Los Angeles Dodgers in that '17 World Series. That series set a record for total number of World Series home runs with 25. Three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger award winner George Springer was named MVP of the series after hitting a record-tying five home runs in the series. There have been repercussions through 3 different franchises. But it all started in this organization. Suspended by MLB and subsequent firing a GM, plus A.J. Hinch, Alex Cora & Carlos Beltran. At least baseball acted swiftly once an investigation was completed. They have such great core talent, really don't believe that it was necessary to go this route. So when I moved to Houston, the Astros were known as the LAstros, but that never stopped me to going to their games, honestly because I was there to watch the visiting teams, but when I attended my first 'Stros game, I was impressed with the ballpark, and I didn't mind coming back. I enjoy watching sporting events, and the venue makes it a great experience. Minute Maid Park is beautiful, seems like there's no bad seat in the house, it's also one of the updated parks in the league. On a hot, humid day in Houston, the retractable roof closed and the AC running is a lifesaver. While walking around you can smell all the yummy food, the food carts are my favorite. So I went to my first game of this season last week, and this is the season the Astros are number in the division, they're really good! Even though the baseball season is long and there are still many more games to play, there's so much potential for this club! The up and coming Correa hit his first home run at home in the first inning when I went, and man did the park go crazy. Well it was also cool that in the first inning there was so much action for Astros. Hernandez from the Mariners was pitching and it was Astros up 8-0, so that was pretty awesome. I love how the train goes off when there's a point! And yay the Astros not only won but the Mariners had 0 points, great night H-town! My favorite seats are near the bull pen and in the mezzanine. If you like action, seeing the pitchers warm up or even hope hope for a home run ball from a left handed hitter, the bull pen is a fun place to be around. Even though it may seem far from home plate, there's just so much going on that you won't get bored. The mezzanine or the second level is also nice to sit, not because of the view but for the indoor lounge area, an air conditioned area where you can walk around and hangout on couches. I've been to baseball games where they've had fireworks, and on Friday nights here, there are also fireworks whether the Astros win or lose. The bull pen are bad seats see the fireworks, so try to move away from the train section so you can get the full affect. But awesome fireworks show, it feels like it keeps going and going and its up close. I loved the whole experience! Baseball games are fun for all ages. Oh and before I forget, I love the Astros new color scheme. The orange, blue and white is just beautiful! read more

They were supposed to do it at the end of the 2015 season but delayed it for another year. I truly hope they keep it forever. It really provides a unique version of our baseball stadium. Watching games in the Minute Maid Park is soooo cool. Especially when it is super hot outside. A/C, beer, and me, we are best friends in the summer. Every time we went to Minute Maid Park, the Astros lost the games. No kidding you, they never win in front of us. But everyone was still so happy about every hit and every home run. Before the Texans rolled into town, and before the NFL was the juggernaut that it is today, the Houston Astros became Houston's first major sports team to hit the Bayou City (this was even before the AFL merger for the Oilers). Baseball's premiere league, the National League, expanded for the first time in over six decades, and Houston was lucky enough to have the leadership to make it happen here for the first time in Texas. Before long, we had the Astrodome (no not the Oilerdome or some crazy corporate name), and Houston's ball club was considered the most futuristic, progressive team in existence. It was a big deal for Houston's national image.
