James (the owner) is NOT trustworthy and will make NUMEROUS promises which he has NO intention of keeping. After neary 5 months of being strung along and after MANY no shows and excuses - I am coming here to warn others. See below for the story if you want more info. The original job was done in Aug 2023 and was done on time and looked great. The price was less expensive than the other bids and the warranty which came with the install sealed the deal. Good customer service from James- at the time. The install took a few days with minor hiccups but overall things went well. Every so often we would find a weed pop up through the rock and turf. We were able to manage and pull about a dozen "sprouts" every week or so. Not a big deal. After a while, it started to become unmanageable and we opted to spray the weeds with weed killer. But, about a year or so later, it was apparent the weed barrier is not holding up. There were weeds everywhere. It looked like we had grass where the rock was installed. It was crazy. I reached out to James in April 2025 via email about the failed weed barrier and there was no response. I remembered that I had his telephone number so I contacted him to please have someone come out. After 2 no shows he finally had someone come out and he let me know the weed barrier did -INDEED- fail and he would have someone come out to remove and lay a thicker, commercial weed barrier which should fix the problem. That was in May. After another no show, he finally sent out one lone soul to tackle a job for at least 2 people. The poor guy had to pull weeds, shovel rock and lay a new weed barrier. He did not get 10 feet in 4 hours or so in the blistering Texas heat. He said he would be back the next week to continue. Leaving his equipment and the rock pulled back with the new weed barrier exposed. No one showed the next week. Weeks went by and new seedlings were growing through the NEWLY laid weed barrier. Let me add that I was speaking to James on the telephone quite often (during this time) who was constantly trying to "educate me" on the invasiveness of weeds and how the can "get under the weed barrier segments (which have an overlay of at least 6 inches) and travel and plant themselves in the dirt and spread to the surrounding area - under the weed fabric. OK! Then he tried to blame the crazy overgrowth on the neighbors -who carelessly "spread their grass seed all the way to my side of the fence" further adding to the problem. I should not forget that the grassy field behind my home likely spread it's grass spore to my area. OK! None of which would make a difference if -the weed barrier held up. So after numerous more no shows, I finally get 2 more guys to come out and do another 6 or so hours of work. They worked in a different area and laid 2 layers of weed barrier! They were able to get about 15% of the work done. After many conversations, and James reaching out to his past employee for guidance, he opted to come out guns a blazin' with some strong chemical to kill the weeds around the first week of June. He was worried about the strength of weed killer and what it could do with to puppy. He noted to keep her off the area for up to 72 hours. We agreed and he came out to spray the area. That was the last time we had someone come out and that was over 2 months ago. My wife thought I was crazy to give him so many chances - he did truly seem to want to help. We returned from a trip abroad after the 4th of July and he basically ghosted us. No follow ups, no more scheduled appointments with no shows, nothing. I texted him to see if we can get on the schedule and nothing. I sent him a final text on 8/15/25 and he said he would get me on the schedule for next week. I said he would have someone out on Wednesday 8/20/25. I knew he was full of it bc when he puts me on the schedule I would get a text message. I got a text message twice in the past and these were the 2 occasions when someone actually showed up.. He is a snake oil salesman at best. Steer clear and go with another company who will actually provide you a warranty. This is not one.

The company downloads thousands on thousands of phone numbers from an online database and sends unsolicited calls to anybody they can early as 8 AM (even calling businesses and renters on holidays) in order to rope in clients by offering a special free estimate (which is standard practice). If you do choose to accept the free estimate, they will try to overcharge and upsell you on any sort of home remodeling projects you're considering due to the small size of the company. From a worker's point of view, the company will hide information on the jobs you confirm and will threaten your job security once a week if you do not get 2 potential jobs per day. This unfortunately leads to the harassment of many Houston citizens through desperate callbacks for months on end and even giving misleading information about the company's status with the Better Business Bureau. There are cockroaches and bugs living throughout their showroom and the owner, contractors, and most of upper management do not speak English as well. All in all, this company is very unorganized yet uncomfortably persistent when it comes to finding clients and will often overcharge clients who are in desperate need remodeling and do not have time or resources to find a second opinion. If you do come in contact with them or happen to receive an unsolicited call, I strongly suggest finding another contractor to save you from a headache/wasting your time. I would even make sure to block the number because they will not stop calling if you don't.

In fact, both bathrooms and the kitchen were stripped down to the studs. We even had him repair some extensive plumbing issues that required digging up concrete in both bathrooms. They also added a skylight, canned lights throughout the house, resurfaced our fireplace, replaced all the flooring with hardwood and tile, added a linen closet, crown molding, replaced doors, blew in insulation, repaired texture on walls, and other items too lengthy to list here. Because of the scope of the project and the fact that we had to move our family and animals out during the remodel, we were pretty nervous about hiring an unknown contractor just based on reviews. We interviewed several other contractors and even though they also had good reviews, we didn't feel completely at ease with them. Ultimately, after meeting with Al a second time, we really felt that he exhibited professionalism, honesty, and a sincere desire to listen to us, so we decided to turn the full project over to him. We are certainly glad we followed this impression. The house is beautiful, and we were continually impressed with Al's workmanship and willingness to point out to us items he had caught that needed attention. Overall, we stuck fairly closely to the allowances in our bid, but we did end up adding a few additional items, which raised the cost somewhat. There were times when digging up the concrete or removing a wall would reveal more problems to be fixed. We felt that we were charged fairly for these additional costs, and Al was very good at anticipating extra cost that might appear and warning us beforehand if possible. Remodeling is by nature a stressful process, but our contractor, thankfully, was a solution to our stress and not the cause. Even though we tried to visit the house daily, it was good to be able to trust that the work would be done well, and that if any problems were noticed, that Al would make sure they were taken care of quickly. My husband works in the construction industry and has considerable experience with many aspects of construction, and he came to trust and respect Al and his workers. We both highly recommend Century Builders and we will continue to do so when friends or family need a contractor.
