For the past 10 to 12 years, we have been putting out our little green bin full of 1-5 plastics, newspapers, and glass bottles out on the curb every other week. And faithfully, a big truck comes up our curb, and two men depart from either side of the rear, and pick up our bins and take our recyclables. It runs like clockwork. This year, 2009, we were upgraded to the large rolling bins, that are the same size as our regular trashcans. The upgraded cans came with an upgraded recycle-pickup-truck; I noticed that the side of the big green vehicle had the words "HYDRAULIC/HYBRID" ! On top of running like clockwork, there is an incentive program for recycling. City of Houston has partnered with www.recyclebank.com, so now, every time you put out green bin, the truck scans it, and you get points added to your account automatically. The points are redeemable for coupons, magazines, and even gift cards to stores like iTunes, Barnes and Nobles, and Amazon.com. If by some anomaly the City of Houston has decided that you are not worthy of a curbside pick up these past 12 years... you should get some kind of petition going in your neighborhood and ASK FOR IT! However, considering that we've been enjoying the curbside pickup for well over 10 years, I'm guessing that maybe those who don't have it don't actually live in Houston. I'm sorry, but if you decide you're too good for the city and live in Sugar Land, Conroe, Cy-Fair, the Woodlands, or even West University or Bellaire, then DON'T COMPLAIN about the city services. Long live the Houston Curbside Recycling Program!

I drove up and waited at the stop sign until I was motioned into the drive through indoor facility. There are professional staff here to remove your recycling. Then they put everything into large separate containers. I was impressed with this operation. I was sent here with some items that the Westpark location wouldn't take. The list of items that they take is impressive - see below. I love that I never have to get out of my car or lift a single thing. Definitely a great place to drive through. You can go to any location through the city but make sure you have someone with you that has a ID and a light, gas or water bill in there name or they will turn you away. Get there early, wait in line and patience. The yard bin fills up pretty fast so you might have to wait about 40 minutes before they take the container to one of the major recycle plants to unload for mulch processing and return. If you have only yard waste (branches, logs, leaves) the wait will not be as long.

I used to frequent the Sunnyside center. The Kirkpatrick center isn't as up to date. But it recycles and it's there to provide a much needed service. That alone gives it value. Please sort out the items and ensure that it's all clean. The city provided recycling centers helps the Earth by reducing waste going into landfills.

On a Saturday afternoon right after the new year, I finished my plastic and paper recycling. Then, proceeded to exit. But the one and only line has not moved for 30 minutes. Because there were only 4 stalls for household recycling. I saw another way below the ramp to household recycling. But it says do not enter. They should have another person direct traffic to ease our pain.

The helpful and kind staff tells you which bin and how to place it in the container. It can seem overwhelming the first time, but once you've been there more than once, you'll get an idea of all that can be recycled i.e. trees, furniture (but call to ask what kind), oil, cardboard, glass, aluminum, etc (check their website to be sure). *Be sure to bring an gas or water bill with you to verify residence* It's usually a fast and efficient trip. I don't know about you, but once I get rid of something I have been wanting to get rid of for a while, I feel relieved. I always leave this place feeling relieved. Thank goodness this place exists.

I had this center bookmarked fo a while, but had waited to make a trip. They have pretty good hours Monday - Saturday. All of my recyclables this time were easy lifts, so they have a drive-thru where you stop, and somebody comes and gets everything out of the car for you. Like a grocery pickup. They just do everything while you wait in your car. They also have the ability to take larger equipment. Some of those things you have to set an appointment for and certain items have to be paid for for them to take it. It's usually a very small fee just for disposal costs and things like that. Entirely worth it for whatever it is you're trying to do. Nothing here is expensive. Highly recommend if you're looking to offload some extra stuff that you're not using anymore without just chucking it in a trash can. They also have paper recycling and shredding services available. Check out their website and see if they'll take what you have.

The recycle section only…read more Was trying to drop off a countertop air fryer convection oven. I have always gone to the west park location but this was very close to my house. Stopped on a Thursday morning and the drop off wait system is confusing. There are apparently 2 lines, one for the dump waste and one for recycling. But you can't tell where one starts or ends. Drove in and was a bit confused about the process. 2 men standing outside, neither acknowledge me. I get out of the car and a young lady comes out of the building and asks to help me. I explain to her what I'm dropping off and she asks me if it works. I say yes. I said it has these burn marks on the inside (one of the caveats of this Cuisinart model was that it's difficult to remove heat or grease marks - main complaint from most consumers and there are no replacement parts) She tells me to back in and take it out of the car. As I open the trunk, the guy finally acknowledges me and asks the lady if it works. She tells him what I said. And he yells, we aren't going to take it bc it's dirty. I respond "it's not dirty, there are burn marks that you can't remove, let me show you. " He says, "we don't recycle dirty equipment". I look at the dirty washing machine he is fixing and said fine and walk off. The young lady apologizes repeatedly and suggest I give it to one of the guys waiting in the long line for the dump side. I ended up going to the Westpark location where the employees are nice and polite. Maybe he was having a bad day or deals with crap people but I didn't do anything deserve to be treated so rudely. Nevertheless, I will stick to Westpark.
