It was extremely clean, and the large bed was very comfortable indeed. Overall Summary: Positives ---- 1. Extremely clean. 2. Excellent breakfast - All items were locally produced, including the bacon, sausage, etc, for the full breakfast. 3. Room very well designed - Bathroom was very good, with underfloor heating - Everything had been given attention to detail. 4. Very helpful and friendly owners. 5. Handy car park available at the back of the hotel Negatives ------ 1. There were two large tables in the dining area, so when busy, you would have to share with other guests - Not a problem for some people, but it would have been nice to have your own table and space. 2. I had a few problems with internet access, but was able to use it successfully from the lounge area - so it wasn't really a problem. - and will probably have been sorted out by now. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone, and will definitely be staying there again when we next visit Kendal.

They did sell a packed lunch for the next day but priced it "over market" in that we purchase these each morning for the days hike and there's is more expensive. Lastly, we want to send home pictures of the days hike and we do it by WiFi internet connection. They had their own captive WiFi but it provides no internet connection. I think overall theses issues made the stay disappointing.

The staff really try to help and the whole experience is like being at your own home or at a friend's home. We were greeted upon arrival by a really friendly member of staff who let us leave our bags behind reception while we went exploring, as we had arrived before check in time. When we returned, one the most enthusiastic and welcoming people met us and showed us our room and gave us some great tips on where were the best places to eat near by. A big thumbs up! The rooms position within the hotel was a little odd as we were directly off the main dining area, but there was a stair way that took us away from the noise and gave us privacy thank god! The room was perfectly adequate, the only real problem was the towels could have been bigger; which for me is pretty good as i find problems with everything! There's the main, historic hotel with incredible woodwork, fireplaces and oil paintings that take you straight back 200 hundred years (or, at least what I would have imagined two hundred years ago) and the newly built "Lake House" (where we stayed) that houses 8 rooms, all with balconies or terraces and incredible lake views. It's situated between the crowded Windermere and quaint(er) Ambleside (my preference, although not directly on the Lake), and an easy drive to all the surrounding lake towns, making for easy exploration. It's a bit of a blue rinse crowd, perhaps due to the price (although they are having a great "May Madness" special with half-priced rooms). We preferred the intimacy of the Lake House, which made it feel like we had our own private villa. Be sure to ask for one of the corner rooms on the 1st floor, as these are the only ones with private balconies that you can sit out on-- the two rooms in the middle of the first floor only have metal "Juliet balconies" that you can just barely stand on, and the ground floor rooms' patios are shared (although blocked off so they are semi private). We skipped dinner at the hotel as it was expensive, and in the same room that the included breakfast is served (plus, you miss out on the incredible views because it's dark)-- and there are many more appealing options both in Windermere and Ambleside (not to mention up the road in Troutbeck-- go to the Queen's Head! You won't be disappointed!) Definitely a place we will return to!

Not really knowing the area, looking at the hotel's position on a map did nothing to inform us as to what we might expect. The hotel is the last vestige of what was once a 9-hole golf course with driving range. The course has been sold to local farmers and the driving range still operates under new ownership. Acts as a by-the-week accommodation for contractors at the local shipyard and associated industry. The hotel is attempting to position itself as a wedding and events venue, but is a bit shabby in common areas and could stand a nice freshen-up of carpeting and paint. The restaurant is pretty pricey - typical for hotels - and costs can mount up if you eat there every meal. We thought we had booked with free breakfast only to find out we hadn't, but were fairly happy with the menu offerings. Just wish they offered a daily special or two to keep things interesting because after a few days you get tired of the same few items you may actually wish to eat. The best thing about this hotel is the friendly and helpful staff who really made our stay great... especially Kyle Henderson, one of the managers. He is a real asset to the place and very personable. If he ever leaves I probably would stay elsewhere.
