The hotel was just sold and the new owners have done some amazing things. I saw new beds going in, the pool was warm, the jacuzzi was getting fixed. And, the place was clean!! They had cut the junk and cleaned the property so it does not look like it has been abandoned. I didn't see any sketchy people and the staff and new owners went out of their way. I would not stay here again, even if you paid me. The rooms Our first room didn't have AC. Our second room hadn't been cleaned. Third finally was okay, but we still found hair on the bathroom sink, carpet had many stains, and I questioned the cleanliness of the pillow cases. I was surprised to see a Wyndham hotel so sketchy. If the rooms had new carpet and fresh coat paint things could go a long way. Breakfast Basically cold cereal. Fruit came out on the weekend and a few donuts but that's about it. Laundry Washer and dryer were broken and when we paid for the time on the dryer it took our coins. Workout room I'm not sure anything worked, maybe just the treadmill? This was one of the most disgusting rooms I've ever stayed in. It is criminal this was $94 after tax. They claim to be under "New Ownership" and that "Upgrades are Happening". Gtfo. I was in Room 110, inside by the pool. The chair had numerous stains on it. Absolutely disgusting. The carpet was disgusting looking with numerous stains. Bathtub and shower (while the shower had a nice shower head) were stained and dirty. There is an indoor pool and that looked normal and functional, but hot tub was closed. The pictures Howard Johnson posts on their website of this property is completely misleading in every way imaginable. If you choose to stay here you are complete lacking functional brain cells. We were heading to the area to meet up with a friend of our son's while on a family road trip from Philly to the Chicago area, and we made this extra excursion for the two of them to get a chance to meet in person after years of gaming together online. Before coming down to the area, the only thing we knew that they'd be doing, is heading to "Fun City" to play at the arcade because his friend's parents had to work on the only days we could visit - so we planned to find a place to stay near Fun City. We looked at many hotels in the area, and our main qualification was that the hotel would have a decent pool so the boys could hang out and go swimming while we visited. We found this hotel - but we were immediately concerned by several of the reviews we found. There were all kinds of complaints - BUT - we saw that the place had recently been taken over by a new owner - and the most RECENT reviews were much much better. So we called the hotel directly and asked them about the specific issues in the complaints, and we had our concerns assuaged by the lovely and patient woman who answered the phone. We spoke for about ten minutes, told her we'd discuss it and give them a call back - and after comparing their prices to some of the surrounding hotels - we decided to give it a try. My husband had enough travel credits with a travel site -and he said that if the place was bad - we could leave, and we'd just get a room nearby, and he wasn't worried about using up a free stay - and so we went, with a backup plan in place. When we got there - we were definitely a little bit concerned by the outside of the place. The front is definitely older and the outside and parking lot is a bit run down. If the hotel were in a busier or more suburban area - I would expect there to be people living there - and probably not the best crowds - but because we're talking about Burlington, Iowa - that wasn't the case. When we walked into the front door though - the place was CLEAN - well-kept and although clearly it's been there a long time - it was more "historical" than "old". We got checked in and we took a room in the atrium - the huge indoor area where the pool and hot tub are located. We were just around the corner from the pool area, down a separate little hallway - and the end of the hallway looked a bit dingy and it was clear that the whole place is really cool, and unique -but that it really does need a lot of work. However- when I walked into the room for the first time - my concerns immediately melted away. We cranked up the air conditioning - and the room cooled off very quickly. The room smelled of NOTHING - and appeared very very clean and clearly had been renovated in the recent past. We were also told that they had just gotten these REALLY nice "Purple" mattresses and HOLY HELL - I would have been just fine with packing that bed up and taking it home with us. The mattresses are - disappointingly - VERY expensive - but it made for a FANTASTIC night sleep, our first of the trip actually, despite having stayed in multiple 4 and 5 star places that were FAR more expensive than this Best Western in the middle of nowhere! We took the kids to the pool for hours on our only evening there - the pool was clean - and WARM - not uncomfortably so - actually it was PERFECT. As was the hot tub. Unlike many indoor pools -there was no horrible stinging chlorine smell hanging in the air - and the entire place really is SUPER interesting and unlike anywhere I've ever been. It's very much like stepping back in time to some of the massive resort hotels that used to be in the Pocano Mountains in Pennsylvania. We LOVED our stay, and the next morning, the woman who works there gave us a tour of the place, told us about the owner's new plans for renovation - and it DEEPLY made us want to head back there some day to stay again - even though it's pretty unlikely we'll find ourselves there, sadly. I absolutely recommend staying here if you have the opportunity. It was quiet - safe - clean - the air conditioning in our room was top notch, the beds were the most comfortable of our entire sixteen night trip from Philly to Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois, and we loved the history of the place. I'm rooting for this place to succeed. It's REALLY unusual, incredibly cool and relic of days past - but it's clearly a labor of love and if they continue to improve the curb appeal of the outside of the hotel (which they are doing by changing the front of the hotel, apparently they will be moving the entire reception area to the other side of the building where they have a FANTASTIC ballroom for weddings and events (and it's gorgeous - if you're thinking of having an event there - DO IT!) Anyway - I do hope that this place makes a brilliant come back and continues forward to being as awesome as it has the potential to - because it's really a sight to see and I think you'll enjoy it as much as we did! read more

Let me this as clear as can be. You're looking at room 107. I didn't want to spend anymore time in there seeing what else was disgusting as the roach on the floor was talking to me. You can see the stains on the chair, the carpet, the sheets matched. The entire framing of the window was covered with Mold. LIKE FUZZY- THE WINDOW FRAME IS BLACK mold. DISGUSTING. The front desk agent offered to move us to a different room. No way I was leaving my son exposed to that hotel any longer so we left. We picked this hotel be cause Wyndham rewards had this listed on the path of the road trip we were taking through Iowa. I should have known better. I made the mistake of staying at the Howard Johnson by Wyndham in Burlington, Iowa. Here's a summary of my experience: The wifi was non-existent in my first room. When I complained and asked out of the rest of my reservation - because like everyone else I travel with devices, I was told that they know the wifi doesn't work well in exterior rooms and they would only move me to an interior room. The wifi in the interior room barely functioned. If you advertise that wifi is provided, why would you ever knowingly put someone in a room where the wifi doesn't work? The hotel itself is a dump. Upon checkin, I found a large dead fly on the bathroom floor, snot rubbed against bathroom tiles, and hairs throughout the shower. Although I reported those concerns, no effort was made to address them. I repeatedly insisted on speaking with a manager - no manager was on site and no manager ever followed up with me. I called Wyndham "Customer Care." Essentially I was told that they could not intervene to address the problems I was encountering with my stay because the franchise owner contractually has a week to address concerns. I explained that no one at the Howard Johnson was taking my concerns seriously and that I was experiencing the problems in real time and wanted a solution in real time. They didn't care. The week has passed and no one from Wyndham "Customer Care" has bothered to follow-up with me. I will never again knowingly stay in a Wyndham hotel/motel. read more

We tried 3 different rooms before we found one that wasn't filthy and then had to listen to fighting in the pool/bar area at 1am. Front desk staff not helpful. Our family comes back here every summer when we visit Nauvoo, Illinois. This hotel has charm and personality. If you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere (and yes, put up with some dirt) then you will have a good time. If you are hung up on the details and want a perfect clean and new room then don't stay here. This old hotel has bumps and bruises, yet it has character and a certain charm. The pool is an unique shape and perfect depth for children. They have a free putting area and will let you use the putter and golf balls. The hot tub is awesome - adults only and deep. You can soak up to your neck simply sitting. The hotel is right across the street from the Burlington Bees minor league baseball stadium so we make it a point to walk over there and catch a game every summer. Casinos are within walking distance, too. You will either love this place or hate it. read more

It's all true. This place is dirty, it stinks, and you'll either sweat or freeze your butt off. As the saying goes... you get what you pay for. For $65/night and $55 if you prepay, don't expect fireworks. The breakfast leaves a lot to be desired but again, who can complain regarding free food? I agree that this place is charming despite the dirt. The villas, courtyard, little stores, and tiki bar are pretty cute. They have mini golf, pool tables, video games, swimming pool, and a lukewarm hot tub. There are a lot of families with children staying here and it is a good place for kids to swim and burn off energy. Be ready though, the pool is freezing. Upon arrival to our room we found a large hole in the comforter, the non-smoking room reeked of stale smoke, stains all over the mattresses, stains on the sheets, cigarette burns in the mattresses, blood stain on shower curtain, ice tray had dead bugs in it, phone was disconnected and ALL buttons on the phone were gone! Dust, dirt, mold were covering the one air vent in the room. Old candy in the dresser. The room next to ours had several old trash bins piled outside the door, full of old trash, to the point it was spilling over. I did get a full refund which I appreciated- however the staff did not seem surprised that I wanted to leave. Seems this may happen pretty often. We booked through Priceline- the pics posted on the site are not current pictures to what the hotel looks like. They look more like as if the hotel had gone through an episode of extreme makeover. These are also the pictures the owner has posted on google as well. If I could give zero stars I would. As a preface we decided to stay in this hotel because of a good coupon which made the night pretty cheap. However after this incounter we will not trust it, ever. Where to begin on this disgusting place.. I have never stayed in a more run down, unclean, gross hotel. The entrance of the hotel has a sign stating "No drinking, smoking, or partying in front of hotel." What a green flag.. (sarcasm) The pictures posted online are indeed older than B.C. and are NOT accurate. When we first walked into the room there was an overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke and rotten indian food. There was crumbs, trash, lots of different peoples hair, dust, and stains. The floors were so bad I know they don't sweep or vacuum more than once a month. I'm pretty sure the pillows and mattresses are ones they found on random street curbs. The toilet was vile, the seat was broken, and there was no toilet paper. The one pathetic excuse of a towel (which you can purchase for only $20) we had in our room we didn't even use cause we felt so gross we didn't even use the shower, terrified of what may be in the shower or come out of the shower head. Stains were everywhere that make you question if it's food or blood. The phone the hotel suggested we used to call the front desk was covered in hairs, what looks like years of collecting dust, food stains, and only God knows what else. We stayed here back in March of this year and our experience overall was good. We cannot deny that the cleanliness and upkeep of the rooms need some serious attention. When we arrived our hearts sank when we entered our room which was an outer room. Windows were dirty and floor needed more than dust busting, air vent appeared to be moldy and the faint smell confirmed it unfortunately. However we knew we weren't going to be spending a lot of time in the room so we decided to suit up and head to the pool. The pool area totally redeemed the room itself. It was the way my husband and I remember hotel pools looking like as kids! It brought back memories and our kids loved it! Small pool for my non swimmers and larger pools for us. The hot tub wasn't working until the third night of our stay but it was nice once it was up and running. Shout out to Soup our bar tender at the tiki hut bar by the pool! He kept our drinks coming. We had a great time hanging out with other locals at the bar. They had putt putt golf and pool tables as well. All in all, a good stay but this place could be great if more money and TLC was implemented towards room updates and cleanliness. read more

This place has gone down hill BAD. We have family in several times a year and stay at the Hojo. This past weekend between myself and family we had 4 rooms reserved for a month. I called the day before to make sure the rooms were adjoining (2 and 2) and pool side AND that we could use the commons area. I was assured this was all good. We arrived the next day ready to have a great time together only to find that 2 of the rooms were not adjoining- in itself that isn't horrible but one room was adjoining to yet another room with folks we didn't know. The door looked like it had been kicked in and rigged!!! I was a little nervous though the folks in the next room seemed nice, I didn't want strangers having access to our room! The pool was really cold and the room really hot. We were unable to adjust the temp in our room even! Most of the staff was very friendly and welcoming but there was a nasty rude red-haired lady who thought she could parent everyone's children (they seriously were doing nothing wrong) One was eating Easter candy and probably did have enough but it wasn't HER place to tell our kids that they look to have had enough of their own Easter candy! Same red-haired lady made us pay an additional $150 to use the commons area right outside the 4 rooms we had reserved! I could understand even if we were messy but we left the area BETTER than we found it. Our kids were well behaved and supervised also. I was floored since we have stayed here MANY times and have family in town a few times a year and always use the Hojo. We've all agreed to never give the Hojo our business again!! read more

At first glance the exterior of this facility was dated. I had extreme reservations..boy was I right. We walked into the front lobby and we're struck with a musty mildew odor. We walked towards our room and I could see that almost all light fixtures were dusty and had cobwebs on them. This was totally unappealing. As we entered our room I was horrified. The room had wall to wall carpeting. The carpet was filthy, stained and stunk like mildew. There was a chewed piece of gum matted to the carpet in front of the sink and was clearly there for a long time. The AC vents were covered in thick dust and dirt....must be great for people with breathing issues. It was obvious that the cleaning staff took every conceivable short cut to not do their jobs. The staff failed to change the bedding. I pealed back the bed spread and saw what I knew to be a used sheet. I could see where the previous person had slept. I removed the sheet and found a bodily fluid stain near the head end of the bed. I promptly advised the staff. I was seriously grossed out. The cleaning person came into the room and apologized for not changing the sheets. I advised her to keep the clean linens....I had plans on going to Walmart to buy my own bedding. The manager later met with me and advised that she would provide me with brand new bedding. I was then provided with factory sealed bedding. In this regards the manager was great. It is quite clear the facility maintenance and cleanliness is not a priority for this location. If you are think about staying here dont. Spend the extra money and go elsewhere....it will be money well spent. Short story long.......beware!!!! read more

I hope you read this BEFORE you book. I didn't and it was HORRIBLE. First off, $100 a night for this hotel is ridiculous. You would be way more comfortable staying in your car. The hotel was filthy. In fact, the entire three days we were there (yes THREE because I was "prepaid" and they wouldn't give me my money back) there was a partially eaten piece of chicken by the ice machine. All three days. We stayed in an interior room overlooking the not-so-lovely pool. And WHY would you put carpeting around a pool area? Obviously because they enjoy mold. After a really long day we get back to our room at 1:30 a.m. and the key wouldn't work. We went to the front desk to get it reactivated and saw a birthday cake. I asked if it was her birthday and she said no - it was the girl who just got off who was at the bar by the pool. The people at the bar had a full-out party until 2:30 and I got up, phoned the front desk and complained. The girl giggled and said she would go tell them...and the party continued until well after 3:00 a.m. It was so loud it was like they were in my room. When we complained the next day about the party. We were told that since we prepaid (through Howard Johnson's website) that we couldn't get a refund. But she would discount my room. That hasn't been done - and I highly doubt it will. The room was filthy, the remote didn't work, the vents were covered in dust, the chair looked like someone had peed on it, the pillows were probably there the day the hotel opened, the carpet was matted down and nasty. We have stayed at this hotel for years, but I can say after our stay today, it will probably be our last visit. Your "pool attendant" left something to be desired. Not only did we feel like pray being stalked the whole evening, but she was very rude too. You provide pool towels, but yet she told one of our children to not use them, because "we're going through them too fast!" Also the fact that she was constantly threatening us with extra charges is beyond ridiculous!! $150 party charge for having food at their patio tables, or $250 for a teenager being in the hot tub?! I definitely had a good experience here. The hotel has a unique look to it inside which I found to be cool. They have everything from an indoor pool + jacuzzi to a tiki bar and game area for both children and adults to enjoy. We arrived in Burlington on a rainy Friday night. The only reason I remember the weather is because it had infiltrated into the hotel room that we were assigned. By this, I mean that the humidity and mugginess of the outside atmosphere had made its way inside the room, accentuating the smells of mold, mildew, and dampness which I'm sure were already present in the room regardless of weather conditions. Everything in the room replicated the outdoor conditions. The carpet was damp and had a hideous and undeniable stench. The blankets and sheets on the bed were damp as well and had the same odor as the carpet. I'm pretty sure they had not been washed thoroughly prior to our arrival. My mom and I were so uncomfortable in this room that we actually had to go out to Wal-Mart and spend $50 on blankets, pillows, and candles to make the room even remotely tolerable. My aunt, who was in a different room actually had an asthma attack during the night because her room also smelled strongly of mold and mildew. Why didn't we leave to another hotel, you ask? Because they were all booked! Because these conditions were intolerable even to the heartiest of people, my family and I requested three new rooms on the inside of the hotel (near the pool area) for the next night. The woman with whom I spoke on the phone was very pleasant and accommodating so customer service could possibly be the only redeeming quality of this motel. I spoke with her of our experience from the previous night and although she did not apologize or justify the poor conditions experienced in all (3) rooms, she did approve my request to move to a different room. These rooms were markedly better than the previous night; however, they still lacked the BASIC housekeeping conditions. Upon entering the room, I placed my luggage on the mattress and noticed that there were toenails on the floor. Not just one or two toenails. But someone had literally clipped all of their toenails, left them on the floor, and housekeeping thought this was an acceptable welcome for hotel guests. The smell was better, although there was still a certain dampness in the air. The shower was rusty and had no water pressure. I was walking around on the carpet in white socks (because I did not want my bare feet to touch the floor) and my socks were blackened after traipsing the small square footage of this room. Ridiculous! While I recognize that there are probably some architectural flaws in the design of this hotel that make some rooms more horrid than others, it should be common practice to clean the rooms after guests leave. Neglect to do so is just mind-boggling to me. Not doing so and allowing travelers to walk into a cesspool is entirely unethical. Try investing in a vacuum cleaner, resolve deep cleaning carpet shampoo, laundry detergent, and some Damprid. I'm sure future travelers would appreciate even an attempt to clean these rooms. I however, will not be one of those future travelers. *A formal complaint was written to Howard Johnson shortly after our stay. We have received no response. read more

Had the "pleasure" of staying in this dump while passing through town. As others have stated, it's best to pass on staying here. Very outdated, rooms are downright nasty (had to go buy air freshener), flies/gnats in room, hot tub was a joke & was basically a warm bathtub and had to deal with loud music/partying outside my room all night. Complained to front desk who said they would "look into the matter" but they were completely full (as were other hotels) and couldn't switch rooms. I will be following up with someone "higher up" as I feel like my complaints fell on deaf ears... Stay away! read more

GROSS! Do NOT stay here. There were pubic hairs in the bathtub and no trash can so I used the ice bucket. Not that it mattered because all the ice machines were broken. There were NO towels in the room or pool. The laundry person quit. The beds were sunken in. There were HAIRS on the PILLOWS. There was NO HEAT. This place is in Iowa and it was below freezing out. They run on an ancient boiler so you get airconditioning or heat. The rooms smelled like smoke. The furniture was stinky and threadbare. Everything is outdated. Plastic flowers from 20 years ago. The jacuzzi did not work. The carpet had nasty stains. The mattresses had multiple covers and still had stains. I slept with my clothes on and wished I had a sleeping bag. I washed EVERYTHING when we got home for fear of bed bugs. The WiFi did not work. We saw multiple people check-in and immediately leave after seeing the disgusting rooms. An entire wedding party left. The walls and doors were dirty. Everything needed to be painted. The toilet roll was attached to a piece of plywood stuck to the wall. The washer and dryers didn't work so we couldn't even wash our own towels. Water squirted out of the power switch of the coffee maker. Good thing I didn't get electrocuted. Plus, the coffee maker was dirty. I forgot to put a coffee pouch in it and the output was coffee grinds. Where did they come from when I never put coffee in it? And the coffee was in pouches...The breakfast sucked. Cereal or day-old doughnuts were your choice. Orange colored water was the juice of choice. They poured milk in the creamer container. There was no decaf coffee for my 80-year-old mother in law. The only good thing going on at this skank hole was the Tiki Bar. You have to be really drunk to stay here. I could not leave as it was a family function so it was out of my control. I would have left if I could. We were supposed to have adjoining rooms, but they were scattered all over the place. My handicapped son and his service dog were placed on the second story? Thanks for making him look like an idiot. Not that having one arm and a traumatic brain injury doesn't make him a target to begin with. I suggest you carry a gun in case you encounter a drug dealer in the parking lot. However, you could probably score some good pot, meth, or heroin if you are into that kind of thing. We wouldn't even let our teenage kids go out to the car in the parking lot without an adult. I'm giving it one star because I have to. This place is horrible. If you stay in the rooms indoors it's fine. But not the outside rooms! Past three times I've tried this place outdoor room because they are cheaper there has been problems with other guests. This last time the room next to us had us up until 4am! We could hear them having sex and drug dealing! We where very scared. A single mother with her 6 yr old and another older daughter! I called and complained 3 times the 4th I went straight to the front desk. Then the next morning I spoke my concerns once again about what all happened all night long. I asked for my money back. Only to get a 30% discount! Worst experience I've ever had with my stay in Burlington. Never again. read more

This is the filthiest hotel I have ever stayed in. Being old and dated has not effected my review. The floor was not vacuumed before I checked in and I walked into a pile of pubic hair on the floor next to the sink. There was what appeared to be dried blood on the wallpaper. The proof of not cleaning goes as far as a moldy coffeemaker with the old coffee still in the machine and everything covered in dust. Several holes in the walls and every piece of furniture in the room was damaged in some form. There is no possible way this hotel passes inspection. read more

I was recently in Burlington Iowa and was expected to stay at the Howard Johnson... much to our surprise this was by far the worst place to stay because of the mildew and potential mold wreaking through the entire property...we checked in without physically viewing the rooms (the pictures on the internet and displayed in the lobby are grossly misleading) and once we viewed them... we were horrified (pictures to prove it)! With the exception of Jackie who struggled to check us in (large group) after about 3-4 hours because each person who checked in was coming back for either a different room or a refund...this property should be condemned for renovations and not to mention what questionable activities goes on there...my sister and I was told everyday they would contact us regarding our refund and wouldn't you know, we still have not heard from them and it appears they might have charged her credit card anyway... please, please beware...note::: I have to give at least one star, but this has no rating at all! read more

Can't give zero stars, but I would if it were an option. When we got here we realized the sheets didn't fit the bed. The thermostat was set to 60° even though it was almost below 0° outside. We decided to go swimming, but were disheartened to learn our 2 year old wasn't even allowed to dangle her legs in the hot tub, and were told by 2 rude staff members that kids weren't allowed in the hot tub, not the area, but the actual tub. No water pressure in our shower, plus ants were all over the floor. Got woke up 3 times in the night because of loud people walking/running overhead. Took my daughters to breakfast and had cold biscuits, lukewarm gravy, boxed dollar store donuts, and most of the butter/jelly was in a small fridge because of no extra counter space. They had an employee, that was there when we checked in, in her pajamas refilling the donuts. Will not be staying here again, I live in town and was looking for a nice valentines retreat, should of decided to go out of town for it! read more

Wouldn't even give them 1 star! The entire building & all rooms smell horribly of mold/mildew. A few rooms even had it on the ceiling and the managers response, "But you can still stay here, right?". Made reservations just to find out (after a 5 hr drive) that we didn't have a room reserved but that a person had just canceled that morning so we were able to get one. The bathroom sink wouldn't drain so they sent the bartender over to PLUNGE it. The fridge didn't work, carpet wasn't vacuumed and a few light fixtures didn't work. We left for a few hours one afternoon and came back & our key was deactivated. Went to front desk & they said they thought we had checked out! All of our stuff was still inside the room. A family member had reserved another room and walked in to put her stuff inside to find two people sleeping in the bed! We were able to get a room but a few others who had made reservations were not. They were told they could rent a cot and sleep with someone they knew. Come to find out they didn't have any rooms available because their staff was occupying most of them. On our last day we were packing & loading the car and came back to find a cleaning lady already in our room and it wasn't even check out time! We also got home and checked our bank account and our account was charged twice (two different amounts) for a bar tab when we only had one tab. Tried calling the hotel numerous times and no response. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE. read more
