View out the back parking lot. Whole lot of nothing out there!

We were travelling across the country and our usual modus operandi is to find a place to stop for the night when it gets around 5-6pm, since that gives us time to both find a place and get something to eat before turning in. This time around we had made it to Holbrook when it came time to perform this little ritual, and the place we found was the Howard Johnson. We hadn't been to a Howard Johnson yet on this trip, so it seemed like a good choice. This is your usual mid-range hotel, but at a decent budget price. It is a two-story affair, but there is a decent elevator to get upstairs, so getting to your room is not an issue if you are laden with bags or have a tough time getting up and down stairs. The pictures you see presented of the rooms are very accurate... they really are that bright and cheerful! It was nice to be in a room with those bright colors for a change! The usual rooms we had been in for most of our trip tended towards those wonderfully bland beige and brown colors. The staff was pleasant, and we had a good nights' rest. Really, we were quite happy with this stay, and would stay here again.

Clearance between door and toilet is stupid.

For your personal safety, privacy, and protection, do not stay at this motel. I have never experienced a more disturbing incident in hundreds of hotel and motel stays for business or pleasure; most troubling was the manner in which management elected to handle this situation. On the last night of our three week road trip, we booked a room at the HoJo Holbrook through AAA, with plans of stopping in Winslow on the way home in the morning. We arrived at 10:00 p.m. and discovered the hotel is one with external doors; not our preference with young children, but it was only for one night. I checked in, and received my key--not a card, but a chip key. The room was old; mismatched linens, stained carpet, tiny bathroom. There are warnings for fines for stolen items posted everywhere, definitely not a destination hotel, but a stopover. Having stayed at many nicer hotels and motels during our vacation, we were disappointed, but again... Just for one night. Having driven nearly 550 miles from Lubbock, TX that day, the kids were tired and a little hungry. Once we were settled in, it was already 11:00 p.m. The only game in town for food after hours is a 24 hour Denny's. I called for three to-go orders, and left around 11:15 to pick them up, a block down the street. At 11:20, my wife calls me, crying, and I hear my kids crying. A strange man had used a chip key to open the door to our room. My wife sprung up from the bed and slammed the door, at which point the man OPENED THE DOOR AGAIN. My family was terrified. I sped down the highway to the motel parking lot, and discovered the General Manager in the parking lot. I asked her what was going on. Evidently, 15 minutes after checking me in, she ISSUED A KEY TO OUR ROOM TO ANOTHER MAN. When I asked her how this happened, she raised her voice to me and said "You are not in the system!" As if this somehow explains everything. No apology, no "I'm terribly sorry, sir"... Just "it's not my fault, you are not in the system." At this point, I'm heated, and ask to speak to the manager, at which point she explains she is the manager. She says, "If you'd like, I'll give you a refund." I told her she's darned right I want a refund. I walk up to my room and my family is still shaken, my four year old daughter won't stop crying. She's terrified. I'm seeing red. We try to get everyone to sleep, and the kids nod off after a half an hour of reassurance that they are safe. At 12:15 a.m. the same manager calls me and asks if I'm coming down to the office to check out! I told her she's out of her mind, and how dare she call me after midnight. She then says, "OK, well, then no refund-- Cone down in the morning and I'll give you 20% off the Hotels.com rate. I hung up on her. SHE CALLS BACK, successfully waking up my daughter, who is now crying again. I hung up and unplugged the phone. No one slept restfully all night. Slamming doors, yelling, and people wandering around the balcony outside all night made me wonder what a Tweakerville hell-hole this was. In the morning, I went to the office to return my key, and no General Manager. The girl behind the counter takes my key, does something on the computer and says, "You're all set." No receipt? No mention of last night's idiocy? I asked about my refund from [manager's name]. The girl calls her, and she's hiding in a small office three steps away and definitely in earshot. I guess she didn't want to help me? She asked me "When are you coming back to Hollbrook?" assuming she was going to offer me 10% off their free breakfast on my next stay. I explained, "I'm never bringing my family back here again." She says my "refund" is on my receipt; I don't have a receipt. The other desk lady prints my receipt. I again explained to this manager with zero customer service skills that she issued a key to a stranger who accessed my room twice, and terrified my family. Again, she goes back to the "it's not my fault, you weren't in the system!" I asked for her business card and the number to the Howard Johnson corporate offices. I've received a response from my inquiry at Corporate for an investigation, with the promise of a resolution by 7/28. I've reported this incident to AAA, and will base my decision to file a complaint with the BBB on HOJO's investigation and resolution. I am relieved that the key issued to a stranger, giving him access to my wife and young children, was not a murderer or a thug, or this could have been a real tragedy. Instead, I still have a terrified four year old daughter who won't sleep in her own bed, and a real sour crook in my craw at the end of a great road trip. For your own safety, don't stay here. Tell your friends not to stay here. New management and customer service practices are desperately needed at this motel, to ensure that no one gets hurt or had their trip interrupted by idiocy.

It may be 2 stars but very clean and quiet. Very light breakfast but god coffee. For the orice it was a value. We'd stay again.

On the night we checked in we were quoted $90 and paid and then when we checked out the receipt stated $72. They would not reimburse us.

It's like visiting your grandma's house--if your grandma hasn't updated anything since 1978 and also forgot to deep clean. But hey, it wasn't terrible. Just... vintage. It's a decent stop for a quick road trip break when all other hotels are booked and you're too tired to care anymore. We rolled in around 11 p.m. and discovered the bathroom was, shall we say, cozy. Toilet and shower? They worked. That's the most glowing praise I can give that area. There's a mini fridge and a microwave straight out of the 90s. It was so retro, I half expected it to have a VHS player built in. Now, the floors. Oh, the floors. They've definitely been cleaned--just not in the last century. My feet were black after walking around for 5 minutes. I'm talking "I just ran a marathon barefoot on a construction site" black. Stains? Oh yeah. From what I can only assume were the ghosts of pets past. You'll want to pack sandals, socks, or a hovercraft to get around safely. The parking lot around the back? A little dark and sketchy, but that's just the ambiance. Adds to the "adventure." Breakfast? Not bad! Pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs... the usual suspects. Nothing Michelin star, but it gets the job done. Coffee was decent enough to kick-start your soul at 7 a.m and it's free. Now, the pool. Oh, sweet summer child. The pool doesn't open until 3 p.m., which is the most ridiculous rule I've ever heard. We were all set for a morning dip to soak these tired road-tripping bones, only to find out we'd have to wait until mid-afternoon. What in the actual nonsense is that? Would I stay here again? Meh, I might try something else next time. But if you're tired, on a budget, and just need a place to crash, it's not the worst option. Just don't forget your sandals and sense of humor!
