I would not recommend this place to purchase a firearm. The owner may know about guns but is not a good business man. I purchased a handgun from them a few months ago. Of course I could not pick up the gun until my NIX checkup came back. I received a phone call on a Friday saying its ready for pick up. I work in Monmouth county but was not close to the store to pick it up that day. I went 45 mins. out of my way the following Tuesday to pick it up and they were CLOSED. I returned on Wednesday to pickup the gun. I said very politely, " It would have been nice if the person that called me for the gun pickup told me you were closed on Tuesdays". Well the arrogant owner laughed and said " That is why they have Google". To me this is a totally unacceptable business practice and I will NEVER buy anything from this store again. I have used their gunsmithing service twice in the past few months to Bob the hammer and tune the action on a S&W 2" M-60 and today to change it he sight on a new Dan Wesson ECP 1911. Each time, the gunsmith walked me through the process, completed the work, and returned the he finished work to me in a very timely manner ! Both times the gunsmith's work was top notch, and delivered as promised. I am very happy with their work, and I recommend them to all of my friends & family. I would not recommend. I brought my firearm in to have a piece replaced. They told me it would be a few days . I called a week later and they said it would be done the next day . After two more days I call they say it's gonna be another few days maybe . Two weeks in I just pick up the piece without the work done . They also damaged the frame of my firearm . Not horribly but nobody should have to wait weeks for something simple and to have their firearm damaged in anyway . On top of that they responded on google and were very rude and dishonest as the spring I needed replaced I brought them because it was a manufactures defect and they accused me of breaking it myself. just very rude, didn't communicate , and scratched Up my gun frame. Just driving on Rt 9 on my way to someplace else and I noticed HGW, so I stopped in to check their ammo prices. I ended up buying a couple boxes of 9mm and some Black Rifle coffee. Order a firearm to be shipped to gun works, When I got there to fill the paperwork they show me my rifle wich they pulled out of the plastic hard case. They called me back to let me know that the backround check wen tru and firearm is ready for pickup. I went to pick it up and they hand me a cardboard box, I drove home and when I open the box I found the rifle, a plastic magazine and a gun lock, no hard case. I call the store to see what happen to the hard case that came with the rifle that they showed me the first time, they told me that now the ar15 are shipped in cardboard boxes with out hard cases, I explained that when they showed me my rifle the first time it was In a hard case,and they responded that I my looked at different firearm, and if I want a hard case for the rifle I have to buy one. Hooray for brick and mortar! With all that's available on the internet not to mention Amazon alone, you'd think it would be hard for local businesses to succeed, and it is. But there are places that do; we all review them here. Such a place is HGW. Six weeks ago I didn't know HGW existed. My wife told me they were located in a strip mall on Rt 9 near Christie's, so we went together. She is looking for a .22 target pistol and I was looking at something a bit bigger. It's a small place and can get crowded at times. Sometimes you have to wait to get served but each customer does not get rushed. Tom (a master gun smith) and Danielle, husband and wife, are the owners. Both are very friendly and they know that a gun purchase is something that a lot of people are apprehensive about, have lots of questions, & concerns; safety being paramount. The hard thing about buying a semi automatic target pistol or any gun really, is you need to actually shoot it if at all possible. Yes, holding it, hefting it, squeezing it, operating the slide, pulling the trigger, & releasing the magazine can all be done here, and that's good, but actually firing it will tell you if it's a match for you. Case in point. I went to the Garden State Shooting Center several weeks back. They rent guns for you to field test. A couple of cop friends told me to go with the Glock, so I rented that, certain I would like it, and three others all in .40 cal. The first pistol I tried was the Glock and for me it was terrible. The first shot told me; trigger feel was numbing; subsequent shots as well. The other three were good but the Sig Sauer p226 felt great in all regards. OK so now I've decided on the pistol I want and am back at HGW and just go in and chat about the gun. Danielle takes it out of the case and answers any question I have; I leave. I do this on 3 other occasions; no pressure. Finally we settle on a price and they order it for me. A week later I'm a happy man. If you are thinking like me that you can save money online, you may be surprised like I was. Prices are pretty much set by the manufacturer and they frown on advertised discounts. So online the prices that they advertise are the prices you get unless you call them and possibly work something out over the phone; but I'm skeptical of that. Also if you buy it online they must ship it (at your expense) by federal law to a local FFL gun dealer who will charge you transfer fees anywhere from $35 - $65 for their trouble. Go to HGW, purchase a gun, pay less, get personal attention, gun smith on site, ask questions, friendly atmosphere or get it online and if there is a problem with your purchase, take it up with the manufacturer because they will not accept returns; for me it's a no-brainer. read more

December 2016 Hubby and I decided to take a look and check out the store, we are both gun advocates and believe in self protection. Walked in and were greeted right away with smiles and hello how are you's.. Wonderful!!! Right away we explained we had not owned guns in NJ but had previously in other states.. very helpful on the new laws briefly discussed and we began looking at the inventory in the cases etc.. Prices range (depending on you're budget) from reasonable to pricey and the variety was, I feel very accommodating to most gun owners, honestly if you are new to guns, not sure about guns, sure it can be intimidating, especially as a woman, you walk into a gun shop and see people talking away and well, its odd man out-- as a woman I have been to some gun shop that are very snitty with me, you know the ( good ol' boy attitude). Yes its annoying. BUT not here at HGW, I mean, I know I went with my hubby, but I would have no problem coming here on my own, they made me feel very comfortable. So, ladies if you are considering a gun for the first time, go ahead, walk in, ask questions, they are helpful and understand that the first step in responsible gun ownership is knowing what is out there and figuring out what you are looking for, especially if you have no idea where to begin. HGW, isn't your typical gun shop, they "get" that first a time gun purchase is just as important and serious as someone who is expanding to their collection. They staff asks lots of questions while conversing with you, this is important when it comes to different fire arms and giving you manufacturers, makes, models, ammo and style to read up on... they know their stuff. Not all guns fit the same for everyone and I really liked the choices they offer ranging from what I have used to what I am considering now. The guy that answered the phone was a complete Dick and before I could give him my information to purchase over the phone told me it's there and to call back if I want it and that he's really busy. First time buyer walked into the store, first red flag, nobody including customers wearing masks. Young guy behind the counter unfriendly, asked me what I wanted and when I inquired about a semi automatic shotgun guys standing around in the store started to laugh at me! Sales guy then proceeded to tell me everything was sold out. Didn't offer any suggestions, and seemed uninterested in helping a single woman. Worst place ever. I had three 15 round magazines blocked by their "Gun Smith" who totally screwed them up. Now I am out the magazines and and the $45 dollars I gave to Howell Gun works to ruin them. They also overcharge for transfers and seem to go out of their way to be rude. I live in Howell but I'll drive 50 miles next time for a transfer to avoid dealing with this place. read more

I had been interested in purchasing a firearm for years but never did because I didn't want to deal with the process in NJ. Finally I dropped in HGW to talk to someone about what I needed to do to start the process. The guy was informative but rude. He basically told me what I needed to do and to come back once I had a permit. Then he went back to the conversation he was having with his buddy and ignored me. I get it, no tire kickers. Still, it left a bad taste in my mouth. So I went through the ridiculous process NJ requires and got all my paperwork in order. My wife and I went shopping at another shop before we stopped in here. I planned to just ask questions and see what I liked. I didn't intend to buy. The salesman was awesome. My wife and I asked a ton of questions and looked at and held at least a dozen pistols....then went over to the revolvers. He was incredibly patient. I was even getting annoyed with all the questions we were asking!! But he stuck with us with a smile on his face and a great attitude. We finally settled on one gun and bought it. Turns out my permit expired 2 days earlier. After getting the paperwork fixed we returned to pick up our pistol. The salesman wasn't there but a woman was behind the counter. It was nice to see a woman there as I know it put my wife at ease. Paperwork went through, bought some ammo, and out we went. I'm not sure what happened with the first guy but they were awesome the second time we went. There is nothing inexpensive when it comes to guns and I'm sure people come in with tons of questions like we did. They were professional and insanely patient with us. Very knowledgeable group of guys here. Fiance and I came in here the first time to take a look and see the selection they had. The staff answered our questions thoroughly and didn't belittle me (since I'm a girl. I've had bad experiences at other locations due to that). Selection was decent and reasonably priced. We came back a few weeks later to purchase two 9mms. The guy that helped us out doesn't normally work at the shop (he was filling in) but was really nice (even though he had a whole bunch of people come in right before closing and was getting really busy) and helped us with all our new questions. We had to come back the following week to pick up the guns since NICS was taking forever that day. We were able to get a deal on our ammo since we had purchased two guns. Howell Gun Works is relatively new and has garnered overwhelmingly positive buzz on NJ firearms sites for their friendly, professional service,good selection and fair prices so when it came time for me to stock up on some defensive ammo and look for options for a new carry firearm I decided to pay them a visit. Located in a strip mall on Route 9 south the shop is small but well laid out and stocked with both long arms and hand guns as well as a wall of every type of ammo and accessory one could need. Service is quick and friendly with the owners eager to walk a buyer through possible options. I expressed a need of a small 9mm carry firearm and 3 options was immediately pulled from the show case and each feature and benefit explained,firearms cleared and I was allowed to handle each one. I immediately liked the S&W m&p shield 9mm and will undoubtedly pay HGW another visit as soon as my permits arrive. I've visited many a gun shop and range in NJ and have been the brunt of indifferent,insulting and lackadaisical service with grudging attention only shown when a purchase permit becomes apparent but these folks were willing to offer me the time and service without even asking for my permit...... As a first time gun purchaser I read some good reviews on this store. Although it was an hour away they had the best price and rave reviews. Upon arrival I was treated with great customer services. I worked with the Owner Wife I believe. She answered all my questions and showed me many options against what I was looking for. I went in to purchase the Glock 19 she should be various ones and also introduced me to a few other Glocks and educated me on the differences. At no time did I feel rushed. The background system was running behind that day so I was informed I'd have to return the next day. A few weeks prior this store had a Glock event and I was unable to attend. Walked in with my wife while both wearing masks. We have a 10 month old daughter at home and still wear masks in small close-quarter locations. A customer remarked "Ooooh, I better keep my distance from you two"... which is fine from a customer. The older gentleman behind the counter chuckled and never greeted us. I asked a question about oil, and received a quick, annoyed response. The younger guy behind the counter was very nice. Overall, everyone except for him had a smug attitude. I called on the phone before going to make sure they could install sights on a couple of my pistols. Was told absolutely no problem. When I got there was also told no problem. After one of their employees working on them for over an hour I was told he was only able to complete one of them and I would have to wait 4 days for their gunsmith to complete the other. I have no issues with extended wait times as long as the work is up to par but unfortunately upon picking up the handguns slides I found my brand new cerakote job chipped in multiple places and my newly purchased slides beat to crap. When I asked what happened a shrug was the employees reply. After eventually getting to the manager I was told he would make it right and have them redone by someone but my experience was so bad I'd rather be out the money than have them in possession of any of my firearms any longer. Between the sights, the install, and the cerakote $480 down the tubes... lesson learned read more
