Hoy's has a lot of product but many seem to be off brands. Sunscreen had the brands but the personal care products seemed like overstock items. No water was available by the case or 12 pack, that was disappointing. read more

Two stars because my friend liked the beach umbrella she bought here. They have cute souvenir clothing and beach things. Sure. But why on Earth are they selling hermit crabs as pets (bad enough) with painted shells (seriously)? http://crabstreetjournal.org/blog/2015/04/19/say-no-to-painted-shells/ It's unbelievable that this is even legal. Avalon doesn't strike me as a place that cares about things like this, but maybe they could make an exception here. An Avalon landmark. I have been coming to Hoys every summer since I could walk, more than 35 years. Now, my kids go with the same excitement I remember as a kid. Great for shirts, nick-nacks, candy- but get sunscreen at home. Twice the price on the shore. I do wish they would move into our decade a bit by reducing the number of toy guns on sale. I wish I could give ZERO stars but I can't... I came here with my friends from camp and we were antagonized and bullied while we were shopping. They have extremely poor customer service. Instead offering customer assistance, they accused us of unseemly behavior. All of the staff followed us around the store while we shopped making us feel uncomfortable, stating MANY rude comments and the manager said she was watching us on the cameras. My sole purpose of entering this store was to buy a souvenir to remember my trip with good friends but instead we were met with rude staff and an even worse store manager. This store doesn't deserve my patronage or the patronage of any of my friends. DON'T SHOP HERE! read more

A decent general store in the center of town. They have a good combination of general items (paper towel, garbage bags, etc..) and seasonal beach items. Almost everything was on sale right after labor day weekend. Overall, a very convenient store. There is also (an unaffiliated) grocery store near by. read more

quirky , and not fancy...yes everythong is there for any situation or need or want but its pricey...being from philly i guess i wasnt aclamated to avalon prices..whew! example...those little stretchy braclets everywhere for a dollar , three here...first aid isle very high...shirts 35 smackers..yikes! but its a fun to look around store ..will go back if i have the chance.... bonus todays cashier was very nice ( talked about allergies and cats ;0) ... ) read more

This was my first experience at Hoy's, and it is an interesting place. I was there 7/16/13. Nothing fancy, but it's jam-packed with everything you can think of --- beach items, hardware items, clothing, sporting goods, etc. Pretty good selection, not always presented well, but they do a decent job with the floor space they have. They have a captive crowd since they're the only "general" store on the island (a small food market is next door), and therefore they charge vacationer prices. I needed an extra beach towel and prices ranged from about $12.00 for smaller, thinner ones, all the way up to $45.00 for a large, thick one. I spent $25.00 for a nice thick beach towel ((36"x70"?) with "Avalon" embroidered on it. Sunscreen prices seemed to average about $14 a bottle. Beach umbrella was about $29 for a mid-range one. Overall, if you need stuff for the beach, try to shop at home before you go and you'll probably save 20%- 40%, but they'll probably have what you need if you didn't bring it all. I noticed that my credit card was charged twice, and when I called I repeated the story to two people before the manager got on the phone, who said to call back tomorrow so the "big manager" can credit the duplicate charge. Just like it's counterpart in Stone Harbor, Hoy's is a go-to place for things you need while down at the shore. Souvenirs, toys, games, beach equipment, you name it. Less foot traffic here in Avalon because of a lack of downtown, but still a nice shope. Everything is marked up about 20-25%. read more

It is the perfect place. No matter what you need, it's there. If you forget to bring something - not a problem. Flip flops, chairs, wet shoes for your jet ski, toys, bathing suits, tape, rope anything it's there. It's like Mapes but even better read more

I love Hoy's. Since a newborn I have been going to th southern New Jersey beaches. Hoy's has everything you will need and not overpriced. Even their high end sunblock was the price that I would get online. Can you get thing cheaper? Sure, but not the quality That Hoy,s offers. read more
