This is the second time I hired Northland Fence, this time for a 6 ft privacy vinyl fence. The…read morecompany offered an incredible special for early birds, which allowed us to make a huge fence. The project cost $15,000. The fence runs around our 3/4 acre, encompassing much of the property. PLAN Maria created a beautiful plan based on information provided online for our property (as well as on her private portal). This enabled us to get the project off the ground before I even purchased the house. We scheduled the first install date one day after my house closing. THE INSTALL The installation is done in three stages. I hired a surveyor to mark the property lines. Northland fence ordered the public utilities to be marked out, and I chose to hire Zone One to mark my irrigation and septic (which turned out to be very useful). Next, a full day was spent installing the posts (the day after I purchased the house). Aaron was the leader of a crew of two, and he and I reviewed the placement of the posts in relation to the original plan. We tweaked the plan, and Aaron was helpful, respectful and very patient as I revised things on the ground during the day. Thank you for that! We were able to respect our neighbor's privacy and increase the gate size to accommodate my UTV for snow-ploughing in winter. FINAL INSTALL The final installation was scheduled for 30 days after the post install, but Northland Fence were able to accommodate us early and install a week after. That was an incredible surprise, and our dogs were delighted! A crew of three arrived: Jesse, Chuck and Bobby, and the guys worked from around 9:00am to 5:00pm to install our huge fence. They began without disturbing me, as I was working. When I came out, they updated me that the fence will be completed in a day. They were quiet and respectful of the neighbors, parking on the side of the property. They did a walk around the fence several times during install to ensure that everything was done right, with a final walk-through the next morning when they came to finish off one small part. This gave me time to do a walk-through also. I didn't find anything wrong. The fence was perfect. DESIGN I'll add that I chose a two tone design, at no extra cost. It turned out gorgeous! WARRANTY 10 year warranty from Northland Fence, and they recommend that we contact them with any questions or problems before we check with our home owner's insurance, should any problem arise. RECOMMENDED.

Just be sure to read and understand the contract before signing. We didn't, and that's on us. The contract stated 2 to 4 week completion for our fence. In our case, Northland came out on Dec 10th and removed our old fencing, set some of the new posts, then left by noon. They returned on Dec 26th to finish the remaining posts. They returned on Jan 6th and installed the fence. All of the crews were polite and respectful. Our project was completed 3 weeks and 6 days after they began. Our problem was that our dog couldn't use the yard and the deer - the reason that we needed the fence - invaded and ate our new $$$ landscaping. There's a reason that a competitor advertises that they use the same crew for the entire process, and get it done in a day or two. If we could go back, we'd have made a different choice.

I described what I needed, and Dan was able to make the purchase from one of their contractors that had the items I needed and saved the day! There are, however several things that have ruined this experience. Due to the pandemic and supply chain issues, our install was pushed out from October 2022 to Spring 2023. It was understandable. The biggest issue was communication. We would hear nothing for weeks on end and we would reach out to our sales representative. He would check and give tell us that we would be contacted in a day or two and then we would hear nothing. That has been a theme throughout the entire process. After several "false starts" of, "Install will contact you", the install finally happened on Thursday, June 15th. The installers were nice and polite. The lead was friendly and listened to us. Some of the techniques used were surprising and somewhat concerning. Normally when you set posts, you are constantly measuring, to make sure they are all in alignment and that their heights are uniform. That didn't happen. They set the posts in wet cement and then adjust the height by pounding down on the top of the post with a sledge hammer as someone eyeballs the height. No measurements taken to insure they match up with the others. I was intrigued by this, but figured they knew what they were doing. At one point I even pointed out that one post was way higher than the next one and that my wife would not be happy, so they went and pounded it down. Distances between posts aren't accurate. They are to be 8 ft panels, but the distance between posts vary. I'm also used to having post concrete being below ground, but in several places, the concrete is exposed at ground level. During the installation, we informed the installers that they had the wrong gates. 2 gates were supposed to have arched tops. They took pictures, called their supervisor, and told us they would temporarily install the wrong gates and then would be out with the correct ones. We then got word from the company that the ones we ordered last year are not being manufactured this year, so we need to keep these and we got a small price reduction for the issue. 2 days later we found the fence falling apart. 1 top rail totally pulled away from the post and took the panels with it. I also had to adjust several of the gates, because you had to push the gate up, otherwise the latch wouldn't catch. We contacted the company & let them know of the issue. They said they would pass the info on. In hindsight, we made the mistake of paying the remainder of the monies due before having the issues rectified. We heard nothing. After several more calls/e-mails, we were notified that they were ordering new parts. Again, horrible communication. During this time, we were able to wash the fence & found several gauges, scratches, and places they left splattered concrete harden on the fence. :( We have referenced these in continued contacts, since IT IS 2 MONTHS LATER & THEY HAVE YET TO COME BACK TO FIX ANYTHING! One of the features of a vinyl fence is the ability to take the post caps off and put on post lights. We asked how to take the caps off. They said the caps were only epoxied in 1 small spot and wedging a butter knife under the cap will release it. When I went to do that, it turns out they are very well epoxied in more than one spot, rather it epoxied on every side of the cap. When I followed his instructions, it actually ripped off a chunk of the colored vinyl, exposing the uncolored core of the post. When they come out to fix the panel, we will ask "the pros" to remove the caps without ruining the post. So now it is 2 months since install and reporting of issues and it still isn't done. We are trying to work on the other landscaping projects around the fence, but the fence itself is incomplete. I have reached out to the company occassionally asking for updates and get the "it should be here this week" response or no response at all. They haven't commented on the gouges or scratches. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING.

While the…read moreinitial estimate and installation timeline seemed reasonable, the overall experience deteriorated significantly after the work began. After installation, I discovered that the old concrete footings were left in place directly under the new fence panels. The estimate stated "removal and haul away," and at no point prior to installation was I informed that old footings would be excluded or require additional cost. Once I raised the issue, I was told removal would be an additional $75 per footing--information that came only after the work was already completed. Additionally, the gate was installed swinging the wrong direction. I requested a simple hinge/swing correction beginning in May 2025. I received multiple assurances that someone would be sent "next week," but despite repeated follow-ups in May, June, and July, no one ever returned to correct the issue. I withheld the final payment pending completion of this unfinished work. After several months of silence, I began receiving emails and voicemails focused solely on collecting the remaining balance. Rather than addressing the unresolved problems, the communication escalated into threats of a mechanic's lien and small claims court. The tone became aggressive and, frankly, unprofessional. Eventually, the company offered a "discount" that was unclear and inconsistently communicated, followed by deadlines accompanied by legal threats if payment was not made immediately. After months of attempting to resolve this reasonably, I agreed to partial payment simply to bring the situation to a close. This was a disappointing experience marked by poor communication, failure to complete agreed-upon work, and unnecessarily hostile collection tactics. I strongly recommend getting all details in writing, clarifying exactly what "removal" includes, and being prepared to follow up persistently. Based on my experience, I would not hire this company again.

Poor value for what you pay. Rather use Northland if you value your time and want quality work.read more
