The staff on hand was also nice enough to help me being that I had my sick mother one one side and my father who has parkinson's with me since my mother is his primary caregiver. The ER staff worked quickly and efficiently to run tests after which she was admitted to the hospital for two days. We were moved over to the newer building which is unbelievable. Beautiful, spacious, clean and pretty glamorous for a hospital. Again the staff at the hospital was super accommodating and understanding that my father insisted on being at her side even though he would have been much more comfortable at home. Thank you to Beatrice, Amanda and Julie (the only names I remembered to write down) in the kidney transplant wing, and to everyone whose name I did not get for taking such good care of us. My mom does not speak english but again the staff was super helpful and had a walkie-talkie type radio on them that could bring up someone who could speak the language (awesome idea). They helped us order breakfast for my mother (there is an entire menu you can choose from which is fabulous) and even made sure to ask if my father had eaten as well.

I would not recommend the Emergency room at St Barnabas to the most vile individual. The Emergency Room at RWJ St Barnabas Hospital Livingston is a place I would not recommend any breathing soul to visit. PLEASE DO YOUR LOVED ONES A FAVOR, GO ELSEWHERE (Morristown Memorial, St Claire's, Holyname, Englewood) Our experience felt like something straight off tv! Pediatric Nurse Erin R (a disgrace) and Grace R (horrible) Nurses in pediatrics HORRIBLE! These nurses are a disgrace to RWJ St Barnabas. The Pediatric Emergency Room is beyond horrible. My child could not walk, or stand. I asked the nurse at the entrance if she could bring a stretcher to help, get my child into the ER., my child was weak, in enormous pain. The nurse huffed at me like I was asking for millions of dollars. My child was admitted, needed 2 transfusions, and needed intensive care. The lack of compassion, care, no concern, desensitized, inappropriate behavior of the ER nursing staff, lack of communication amongst doctor's, nurses, and patients is life threatening. I will say the Pediatric floor has improved, and I appreciate all of the nurses that has cared for my child for the past 4 years. Unfortunately due to a few bad apples in the ER, we will never return to this place, regardless of the circumstances. This hospital is a train wreck looking for a time, and place. It won't be with my family or friends! Yes sharing your review on social media will encourage others to think twice. Hopefully positive changes for the better will happen, that hold a few bad surgeons, and nurses accountable. The Joint Commission, medical board, nursing license board, consumer affairs, as well as going after these negligent surgeons at St Barnabas ability to write medication for pain, narcotics will get immediate attention, adding loss of accreditation, possibly being kicked to a Tier 2 hospital which will hurt the hospital financially. Only after RWJ St Barnabas is held fully accountable on every level that affects there finances will they understand the depth of pain, and disappointment, that they have caused patients, families, and the community!

Not long ago, I wrote a less than laudatory review of my experiences at St. Barnabas Hospital. I…read morewas born there when it was located in Newark (Newark has never been the same since!), my mother died there long after it had moved to Livingston, and recently when trying to enter the establishment to have heart tests performed, I would have been better off had I been accompanied by one or 2 specially-trained Commandos in order to find a parking spot, breach abrasive and antagonistic "registration" and "security" desks, and finally arrive at the designated "zone" where the tests were to be performed. I know that the Sleep Center is a part of the same establishment, but my experiences in the 2 places have been as markedly different as night and day. Tangential to the heart tests I recently had done, it was suggested I get tested for "sleep apnea." I'm not knowledgeable about sleep apnea, but I guess it can be a contributing factor to heart problems. I was agreeable, but the thought of trying to sleep in a room, wired up like Frankenstein, with people staring at me through a window (think "Nightmare On Elm Street") was not a prospect I could face with equanimity. I've been an insomniac for most of my adult life (I think the condition started when I was backpacking across Europe with my oldest friend when we were in our early 20s and we "crashed" on trains, train station floors, park benches, bars, dirt-cheap "youth hostels," etc.). My insomnia is not as bad as it once was (on 1 occasion in my 20s, I was up for 3 days straight, and that was without the benefit of cocaine or a stimulant of any kind!), but I still sometimes have trouble even when I'm in a darkened room, all by myself, my system suffused with Unisom and "Nighty Night" tea, sound machine turned up full blast to "white noise." I was told by my doctor that I could perform the test at home myself and didn't have to suffer through that nightmare scenario of attempting to doze off overnight in the Sleep Center itself. I mentioned all this to my old friend, who is a chronic hypochondriac (his paranoia about his own health makes me look like a piker in comparison) and has already had every test performed that you're scheduled to have performed, and then some. I mentioned that I didn't think I had sleep apnea as I wasn't "that overweight," and he said, "My Dad was a perfect weight, healthy guy, tough, and he had sleep apnea. Don't fool around with it; it's serious business. You could die in your sleep." I responded, "Yeah, but if I have to die...and I think I'm gonna have to, at some point...that's exactly the way I want to die. In my sleep." He didn't have a response to that one. I said, "It's a joke. Yeah, I'm gonna have the test done. Relax." Unlike with the heart tests performed at St. Barnabas, I received an information packet via email with easy-to-follow directions to the sleep center. A parking permit was provided for the specific sleep center parking lot. I was admitted at the front door, traveled up to the 6th floor, and met with a tech who explained everything to me and provided me with the equipment I would be using. Everyone I encountered was efficient, friendly, helpful. I was told to bring everything back the next day. At home that night, I downed a Unisom pill, hooked up the equipment (a "wrist watch" to turn everything on, a small monitor taped onto the breastbone to measure "snoring," a tightly fitted "cup" I had to keep my finger inserted in), and...that was pretty much it (the "wrist watch" flashed "Good Night" to let you know that everything was functioning properly). I still thought I might have trouble sleeping, but I was out pretty quick. Morpheus welcomed me with open arms. I awoke next morning with a migraine, but at least I had slept. That next morning, I returned all the equipment as instructed, and again encountered no difficulties or undue stress during the process. I was in and out of the center quickly. I still don't know, at this point, whether or not I have sleep apnea, but my experiences with the Sleep Center specifically, as opposed to St. Barnabas generally, have been positive and professional. Highly recommended. (In fairness to St. Barnabas as a hospital, I feel it incumbent upon me to mention that they're dealing with every injury, accident, trauma and disease imaginable, whereas the Sleep Center is focused on sleep difficulties exclusively...or, as in my case, sleep difficulties as they might be related to heart issues. Not that that obviates or negates the review I wrote about St. Barnabas itself...which was a mediocre rating at best...but I do like to think of myself as being fair.)

So I was referred here by my OB for a routine 20 week anatomy scan, first pregnancy. I will start…read morewith the positive, when you actually arrive at the Livingston office, its actually totally fine. I didn't know I had to sign in, but but realized once I saw others do it. The front desk woman was nice, the staff member who brought me back for a weight and blood pressure check was nice, the sonograph tech Xena was kind and explained what she was seeing and assured me when I was nervous. She tried extra hard to get those pics of my hiding son so I didn't have to come back. The doctor who came in after and talked to me about my results was really nice. There was a wait for which they apologized as they were integrating a new system, but I can live with that. I also assume some women need more time getting those scans and so waiting for me is understandable in an office like this. So in person, great. Don't be afraid to come here, it really was worth it in the end. Just get ready for the potential of some administrative headaches when dealing with them over the phone. Getting this appointment was hard. My OB sent the referral to NJPA & told me I'd get a call soon. 1.5 weeks go by and no call. I confirm with my OB that they sent it. So I had to call NJPA and the woman I spoke to emphatically denied receiving the referral, told me should couldn't make my appointment without one, and sounded panicked because I was now not going to get my scan at 20 weeks which was a little nerve racking for me. She put me on hold and when she came back she actually was able to make my appointment, just at 21.5 weeks instead. Fine, I can accept that the referral may have gotten lost in the shuffle or maybe they forgot to call me. That amount of time doesn't make too much of a difference, but the complications just kept coming. 2 days later NJPA leaves me a message telling me that my OB requested I have genetic counseling which was news to me. My OB never discussed that with me, and it worried me. So far I'm having a low-risk, under the age of 35 pregnancy without complications and had extensive genetic counseling already at my fertility clinic. I call my OB & they say that they definitely did not order that for me, don't take the appointment. So I call NJPA back to tell them my OB did not order it but they pushed and literally said "Yes they did." The woman then proceeded to pressure me to take the appointment telling me that if I didn't that she would have to talk to her supervisor and I'd have to sign a waiver when I arrived stating I was refusing treatment, which is a scary thing to hear and I felt like I was doing something wrong so I took the appointment. I called my OB one more time about this, to literally triple check they really didn't order it. This time my OB's office said they would call NJPA directly for me to explain to them. They did, and NJPA got back to me and said the would cancel the counseling and I'd have to sign that waiver. When I got to the office, there wasn't even a waiver. All this to say, when you're scheduling these things, it's time sensitive and nerve racking, they gave me unnecessary worry. But once I got there, it was not an issue! Just some food for thought, if you get through the phone slog, you'll be fine!
