another downtown flagship and canadian icon, hudson's bay, will be closing, and it really is the end of an era. once a grand and bustling department store filled with shoppers, beautifully curated displays, and the excitement of finding everything from designer labels to home goods under one roof, it now feels like a shell of what it used to be. the energy is gone, many shelves sit half-stocked, and entire sections are eerily quiet. what's especially disheartening is the state of disrepair, all the elevators and escalators are out of order, forcing shoppers to trek up and down multiple flights of stairs. it's not just inconvenient, it's symbolic of a slow and undignified fadeout. it's hard not to feel nostalgic walking through, remembering a time when the bay was a retail cornerstone downtown. sad to see such a big part of canadian retail history slipping away like this. read more

The City of Vancouver should be embarrassed to allow The Bay in its current state to operate in the centre of downtown. The Bay should be embarrassed of itself. I am embarrassed as a Canadian living in Vancouver for the store in its current state. The escalators have not worked since last summer. That's at least 9 months. Out of the 4 elevators, only 1 is working as of last Sunday. There were signs and arrows everywhere giving shoppers direction s to the stairs. The men's floor is on the 6th floor. The only working elevator worked with a speed as if it were hand-cranked. If I had not needed some exercise last Sunday morning, I would not have bothered to climbed 6 floors knowing they probably would not carry long johns anyway. After I reached the 6th floor and asked a sales clerk if they carried long johns, she showed me pajama bottoms. Oh, The Bay. You belong in a 3rd world country, not even a developing country. read more

This is literally my hell on earth. Broken escalators and elevators, stairs to nowhere, an endless inescapable maze... Massive section of clearance shoes but the shoes' mate is as difficult to find as the actual shoe section. Employees were many and actually helpful, probably overly helpful since they outnumber customers 5 to 1. How is this place still in business? read more

This post is specifically about Zellers @ Hudson's Bay Downtown Vancouver 3.25/5 Has potential. ZEDDY!! - You can never not have Zeddy present. There are two spots where the huge multicolor Zeddy canvas is present in the store. Zeddy, along with the mix of red and white, brings back nostalgic memories. GEMS/GOOD FINDS - I was excited to see a great selection of home goods. My good finds included the wooden serving boards and bamboo pantry shelves. They were very affordable and made with good quality (the serving board was thick and made with heavy wood). ANKO - NEW  - This is new to me and new to Zellers. Zellers has the exclusive distribution rights to Anko, a commercially successful line developed by Kmart Australia, which is now expanding globally with Canada being its first international market (https://retail-insider.com). Anko is known for its homeware, kitchenware, small furniture products, and toys. Location - It took me a few minutes to figure out where Zellers was located in the Hudson's Bay. The only signage I saw was by the directory/escalators. Zellers is located on the lower floor where Forever 21/Levi's is. There is no actual Zellers sign to indicate that you've entered "Zellers." You just see the huge multicolor Zeddy canvas and the red & white interior, and you know you're there. Sections - The sections that stood out to me include home goods, a surprisingly large pet-related section, children's toys, and clothing. Foot traffic - There were less than 10 people at Zellers at 5pm on Friday. It was pretty empty and sad. No food. I will check out the other Zellers locations to compare. read more

Quite possibly the least accessible building in downtown. 3 out of 4 elevators are broken. To get to the 6th floor via escalator you have to get off on the 3rd floor and wait for the elevator. People don't realize that it's faster to take the escalator down so it takes forever for the one working elevator to get down. Save yourself the hassle and don't come here if you have a stroller, wheelchair, or have any mobility issues. read more

There is favorite one whom I can talk about perfume forever and after purchase, she gave me generous amount of samples. So good! 2 starts: why the escalator is broken always? Especially it's Bay day. Sad to see the Bay devolve so much lately. The place is stacked with security guards and undercover cops. You cannot leisurely shop, and you are always looked at like you are a thief. I'm not a thief, just a taxpayer that's has worked for 40+ years, who would occasionally like to browse around the Bay, well that's over, how dare I want to browse, right? If u want to browse, be ready to be treated like a thief. You must be suspicious if u are browsing right? The last time I was there I was looking at purses, I was approached five times, by sales staff, and they kept asking do I need help, I said no thanks, and eventually I said, OMG, stop harassing me, if I want to make a purchase I will, otherwise get lost! I almost forgot to mention here my last experience with the Hudson's Bay. I came into town on the Canada Line so tried to use the entrance doors on the lower level. Was greeted by a sign that said that that entry was closed (even though I could see employees working on the other side). So I had to retrace my steps through the underground, climb stairs to street level, and walk around the block until I found the main entrance. I needed to go to the second floor so went over to the escalators which were shut down, as they almost always are. A sign said to follow the footprints on the floor to the elevators. So I followed the yellow brick road which twisted and turned between various departments. When I arrived at the elevators, 3 of them were shut down, leaving only one that was operational. I waited several minutes with other disgruntled shoppers watching the elevator's progress on the read-out. When it got to the 3rd floor, it seemed to get stuck. I had had enough. I went home and ordered my items on Amazon. They were delivered within 48 hours, free shipping. Need I say more? read more

What was once a premier department store in the past had become a bottom rated one. All returns are to be made in the basement. Most escalators are not working so elevator waits are in excess of 10 minutes. Customer service is bad they don't care. So wonder they remain in business. Hudsons Bay Intelcom service said they delivered my package which was no where to be found, then it said delivered at 1am the next day??? 1 am delivery, weird. I went down, no package. Customer service at Intelcom just said, "Well, I guess its lost then, contact Hudson Bay for refund". WFT! Hudsons Bay wont issue a refund until I file a police report. What a big waste of my time! I would love to love The Bay because it is a Canadian institution (although no longer Canadian owned), but I am fed up with the place and hope I don't waste any more time trying to shop there. I have a Bay mastercard and Bay rewards card. I didn't use them for several months and when I tried to use my card to order online, it had been cancelled by the Bay for non-use (or some such reason). I was told in the store I would have to call the so-called "customer-service line" -- a euphemism if I ever heard one! -- to get it working again. Hahahaha! Ever tried getting a human being on that line? Forget about it! Most big businesses now have a call-back scheme, but not The Bay. How long do they expect customers to sit endlessly on hold while being told "Your call is important to us"? Apparently not important enough to answer! So I gave up on ever using my card again, although it was convenient for ordering online. I have, however, given up on that as well. I type in very specifically what I'm looking for. Today, for instance, I typed in "ladies' cotton nightgowns" and yes, I did see nightgowns, but I also saw pyjamas, underwear, shorts sets, oversized shirts, polyester/nylon and any other random fabric thrown into the mix. Dozens and dozens of unrelated items that just waste my time ploughing through them trying to find what I want. And invariably, on the off-chance I do find something related to my search, I get a message "Unavailable at any store within 100km radius". But of course it's still showing on the website! And try to find a staff member to help you when you're in the store! You feel like you've somehow snuck in when the store is closed because as far as you can see there's no staff and no customers! Silent. Deserted. You wander from aisle to aisle, up and down and all around, searching in vain for an actual sales person. I think I'd faint from shock if one ever appeared and asked if I needed help. I will say that a few months ago I returned an item and got very friendly service from a lovely lady in the lingerie department. I have remembered her because she was such an exception to my previous experiences at The Bay. I no longer care how long The Bay has been in Canada. What I quite like about this store is the sixth floor menswear. Sure they have top shop downstairs but they have some really nice quality stuff upstairs. My only gripe is that when you ask them to tailor a suite they do it the "British" way so it looks like an older cut. Over the years here I've bought a few suits, many pairs of shoes and a whole bunch of Levi's jeans, over coats and T-shirts. They have really good quality stuff and during Bay Days and Boxing Day you will probably be getting the best deal on Levi's, top coats and their excellent shoe selection. What I also like is that it is a traditional department store. This doesn't exist really anymore. But they have a decent selection of everything in every department. Christmas time is usually fun here. Especially downstairs with all the chocolates and toys on sale. read more

Really negative experience coming in here to pick up nespresso. I live downtown and so I decided to pick up in person; however, the staff seem a bit pretentious when picking out coffee, nespresso is a complicated concept. I'm sorry I don't understand subscriptions and ordering coffee by the 10piece, I have never purchased coffee in this way. As I leave with my purchase there's sales reps after me from other designer stands if they can show you this, or if they can help you with anything when you are trying to leave. It's overwhelming and not a great experience. It gives off the vibe of pressuring me to buy things and/ or suspicion why I'm there, it's just not a great feeling and I don't like going there. read more

Its probably the layout that doesn't attract me in buying. Bay is bay seems like its a fancier old navy store. I don't find their stuff are quality things. It is not the best departmental store in Vancouver, but then again it is not exactly swimming with departmental stores here anyway. Shopping mecca, Vancouver is not. I appreciate this flagship store for its size and variety, compared to its other outlets in other parts of the lower mainland. There are more choices here and you do have many levels to browse. It has a mixture of designers and non-designers items, with many in the mid-range spectrum. Oh, and there is a Topshop/Topman, which occupies its own level near the train station level. I agree there are not enough staff to assist if you are looking for items but that also means they do not hover around you when shopping which is a relief. But I do manage to flag down someone to help when I need it, so that is ok. Staff is generally pleasant, just not overly friendly. It also helps if you have the Bay credit card as they do have promotions often with additional discounts for card members. read more

They are doing some SERIOUS RENOS to this place. My review is for the men's department. It used to be located in the mall level of the store and was somewhat limited in size. They have now moved onto the sixth floor and the floor space has increased 3.5 times! They've taken over the entire sixth floor. This has to be the largest men's wear department in all of Vancouver. I am liking what I am seeing. The renos are not yet complete at the time of writing this, but it's beautiful from what I see so far. They've taken out the Seymour Room and the furniture department. It's history. The renos are in prep for the competition. That competition is Nordstom. They need to go more upscale to compete. I like this space. It is historic. I admit it upfront: I love the Hudson's Bay Company. I love the history of the company, I love the iconic blanket and colored stripes motif, I love the traditional aspect of this longstanding Canadian brand. As a retail destination, the HBC is very much akin to Macy's in the USA: the various departments, even some of the brands (the "I.N.C." line of women's clothing, for example), the "Friends and Family" sales, etc. All are the same at Macy's in the States. And, after living in the States for the past 22 years, I've become very familiar and comfortable shopping at Macy's. So the HBC is a department store that, albeit very Canadian, I feel very familiar with. A few notable differences between this HBC and Macy's: here there's a Canadiana merchandise and apparel section. Some of the clothing are from the Canada Olympic collection. It's all awesome! My family and I have a lot of these items, including red Canada mittens and gloves and shirts. There's also a HBC section which is one of my favorites in the store! I'm a sucker for the iconic stripes, what can I say. I love everything in this particular area (the clothes, the house accessories, the Christmas tchatchkies. Everything!). I'm at this store regularly. Today I purchased some makeup. There are a lot of bonuses and specials lately, with the holidays and gift-giving season upon us. The lady who helped me at the counter gave me a lot of samples. I love that! A few weeks ago, I wanted to get a Levi's denim jacket in the store (it was lined with the HBC stripes!) but they didn't have my size, so I ordered it online. Saved a few bucks with an online sale, too. But when it arrived a few days later, it wasn't working for me, so I returned it to the store. They took it back and refunded my money, no problem, no questions asked. Nice! There's an optometrist in this store. I've not used their services but my mom in Montreal swears by the optometrist in the Hudson Bay store in downtown Montreal, so I'm definitely going to go here when I next need an eye exam. The Topshop and active wear departments in this store also bear mentioning, as they are expansive, with a large variety of styles and sizes and and price points. The home department is stocked with china and cutlery and appliances, but they didn't have a lot of furniture or accessories (at least, there are larger furniture selections at other cities' HBC stores). Lastly, I should note that the exterior facade of this building is one of the nicest in the downtown Vancouver core! Very ornate, old, stately building. Just beautiful. read more

I spoke with the staff and they say it's been like this for a while, and talking to management to ask for fans (just fans!) fell to deaf ears. Shameful for "Canada's department store." I love to shop from the Bay, it's our family favorite but tonight I went to shop a gift for my friend at the kids section on the fourth floor, there was an old lady working before closing we were the last two before closing and she was very rude and didn't not give us gift receipt and said "it's embarrassing to get one" and did not give us a bag also And when we asked for one she said "we don't have" after I pointed to the paper bags she said sure I'll charge you 17 cent and kept being rude and disrespectful. Worst customer service experience I've ever encountered. Purchased a bed here, took almost 6 months to arrive; finally arrived missing a major component (mattress platform/slats). Been waiting over a month for this to be addressed, have spoken to at least 8 different customer service agents, I begged for a solution, they all promise it will be solved & that I'll hear from someone in 24 hours, yet nobody ever calls back. They collaborate with celebrities, the most popular collection being with Kate Moss. The Bay has really reinvented themselves as I saw brands such as Free People, Juicy and BCBG to name a few on the top floor. (Ladies fashion) And now... I have been shopping at The Bay for many years, and the downtown Bay has always been my favourite store for clothing. A couple of days ago I again visited the store to check out the Black Friday sales. The two staff members that I dealt with in the Men's designer area were absolutely amazing. Both Rezwan and June went "above and beyond" to assist me. The downton Bay features a few independant retailers that lease space within the store. Many of the same brands that you find at Nordstrom's but with a broader selection and much better service. Excellent personal service is so much better than buying clothes online, and the Bay is still my "go to" store. read more

Came here with my sister to return designer bag. First we went to Metrotown Bay and they refused to do a return since they carry different items at Metro. It was understandable that they can't do a price check before returning. So we went to Downtown Bay and looked around to find associate to help us. After Jay (the associate) came to us, took the receipt keyed in all the necessary information. She was fast, efficient and very helpful. We left the store feeling happy. read more

I love shopping here all the time :) mostly at the cosmetics and fragrance section. It's like my safe haven whenever I feel I need some pampering. I always buy my perfume and make up here. If your planning to buy a perfume or any fragrance look for Elvira or Karolina. They are very nice and accommodating, and will help you with looking for the perfect perfume for yourself or as gifts. The fragrance department are always nice and provides excellent customer service. Compared to other the Bay location I would say the one in downtown is the best as they try to help you as much as they can, and all the staff are always nice and accommodating. They also have a fragrance event happening on November 16, where there will be an engraver that can engraved on your purchase of cosmetics like YSL lipsticks or perfumes. You have to purchase a ticket from one of the staff before November 16 ;) (I recommend Elvira or Karolina) come stop by while they have some perfume sets and maybe put the items or perfume sets you want on hold for November 16 ;) read more

For the second time, the Bay's Boxing Day sales didn't fulfil their orders. So they not only deprived me of goods (that apparently were returned to the store for non-delivery), they deprived other retailers of my business. I have to believe I'm not the only one and that the volume of calls in their call centers at the moment are other shoppers experiencing the same thing. Next stop is Consumer and Corporate affairs to complain about what is certainly deceptive trade practices. read more

Hudson's Bay (aka The Bay) is a Canadian department store chain. The company itself has a long history having been founded in 1670. This location on Granville Street is their flagship location in Vancouver and is six stories tall. Note that there is also a level below street level that is in close proximity to the entrance of the Granville SkyTrain station. While Hudson's Bay is considered by some to be the equivalent of a Bloomingdales or Nordstrom, I feel like their product selection is somewhere in between Macy's and the two aforementioned retailers. From checking out the new Nordstrom store in Vancouver, the product selection there is more upscale than what you would find here. I shopped here on Black Friday. I wasn't expecting to find a deal since I have found buying clothing in Canada more expensive. But I decided to check the store nevertheless. Upon walking around, I noticed they had a doorbuster on Adidas track jackets that were a good deal. I decided to try a couple of them out. Unfortunately, there was only a mirror nearby to try it out at. The fitting room for sports apparel was in disrepair so I couldn't try it inside. The checkout experience was a typical one at a department store. Though if you pay by credit card, I have noticed that the system they have in Canada is different. You put the card in the credit card machine and have to wait for the payment to go through before taking the card out. I think Hudson's Bay is alright. It is worth a walk through as you might find a good deal on something. If not, it is no big deal. read more

Very disappointed. My mom has been with the Hudson Bay for 55 years and used it as her primary shopping spot for me and my 4 siblings aswell as herself and my dad for as long as we have been around. Recently (last thrusday) a package was "delivered" by their delivery company and was stolen within minutes if being dropped off at my home. My mom works from home and was working at the time of the delivery and nobody notified her or rang the doorbell when the $197 package was dropped off. If they rang the doorbell or knocked on the door she would have gotten the package and there would be no issue. Sadly the delivery company provided by The Bay did not notify us of the delivery and as a result the package was never received by us and we will now be missing Christmas gifts. After my mother has contacted the Hudson Bay multiple times about the issue they have kept pushing past the issue and done what they can to blame my mom for the missing package and say that they will not refund it. After multiple emails and phone calls with The Bay they currently say within 15 days they will decide weather or not to refund us. As my mom has been with them for 55 years and this is only $197 package i am simply amazed that a company of this size has made the issue drag on this long and started out by blaming my mother for the issue (i know several other companies would simply refund within second if hearing about stolen packages due to their delivery company). I would recommend you do not order from (or shop with) The Bay as they (likely) will blame you (assuming we are all treated the same) if anything goes missing (like they did with my mom)...even after being with them for 55 years.... We were loyal to The Bay for 55 years but when there is an issue on our side (being a stolen package) they have so far chosen to make it extremely difficult for my mom to even get a refund (which we still may not get) when at this point I believe she should get more than a refund after the hassle that The Bay has caused for my mom. This is all extremely disappointing. I really hope this can be resolved immediately. read more

More than 6 weeks after placing my order, I'm updating my previous one star review. I emailed twice to try and get any kind of information about my order. Each time I got and automatic response telling me that someone would get back to me as soon as possible. Today I got an email from Hudson's Bay thanking me that the issue had been resolved. No one ever got back to me about my order. I have not been told that it has shipped and the issue is not resolved. So I phoned. I got placed on hold with the e-commerce assistance line with the warning that it could take up to 18 minutes to talk to a customer service representative. After more than 45 minutes the call was ended. So, far, after week's of trying, I have been unable to connect to any information about my order either by email or phone. No other company I have dealt with online has made it as difficult to track an order or speak to a customer representative as HBC. As others have said, do no order anything online from Hudson's Bay Company. read more

I just had the best customer service experience ever with Nahid who helped me find bras that are incredibly comfortable and actually fit me! For those of you who don't know, bra shopping can be a very daunting and overwhelming experience. But Nahid really listened to what I need and want, and was so knowledgeable in what's available in the department. She was kind, friendly, and supportive. Buyer beware of the price that is rung up at the cash register. I bought a few items at the lingerie department that were suppose to be a discount off the last marked down price. When I noticed on the bill that it wasn't so, one of the 2 clerks insisted that it was already marked down until I showed the mark down price on a calculator. It turned into a gong show. They had already held the items for me, believing that it would take only a few minutes to ring through. Wrong! Turned into an hour as they couldn't pull up the transaction. We purchased some furniture for our summer property and a sofa-bed for our condo in downtown Vancouver from The Bay on Georgia Street. After repeated calls we finally got our receipts over a month after our purchase. The salesman from the downtown location told us delivery from Kamloops to our place in Sorrento would be at no charge as we'd purchased the 5 year guarantee plan on the fabric for both orders. Call from them apologizing for the error, now delivery from Kamloops is over $200.00, (original quote was over $300.00). Not much choice right? I have never been so disappointed in the lack of communication and lack of replies to my repeated emails. Today I received a call from a man in Kelowna, wanting to know when we'd like to arrange delivery? Kelowna??? It's 134 miles away from Kamloops! Again, my email to both the furniture manager and salesman are being ignored, again. If I could give them a zero star review, I'd give The Bay in downtown Vancouver a minus. V. Elliott read more
