Pros: clean store Cons: we were in Canada during the bark Jacobs event. It's where you buy a bag and if you pay a certain amount for the bag, then they will paint a picture of your pet on there for you. Unfortunately, we got there the second weekend of the event and there were not a lot of bags available. Adding more to the chaos was that the artist was running late. We had to drop the bags off and come back a few days later towards the end of our trip. I tried multiple times to call someone on the phone and get help from a personal shopper. I have a love and hate with HR esp since Nordstrom left. If you know what you want, HR can definitely order it for you. There was a time when service was a miss. However HR consistency at present garners high marks. Every time I get items sent or I drop in for pickup, the items are in pristine condition and packaged beautifully. I tried on a pair of Christian Dior shoes in two sizes. I walked in them on the tiled public flooring in the store. I purchased one pair. During the sale there wasn't much verbal communication. Upon checkout the clerk turned over the shoes and pointed at the soles without word. I assumed that she was confirming the size. I approved and we completed the transaction. She did not go through the return policy. Upon arriving home I tried them on in my home on hardwood flooring . I took no more than 10 steps in the shoes and decided to return them . When I went to return them I was told by the clerk that they were deemed to be in unsellable condition due to signs of wear on the bottom. I explained that I had not worn them out and tried them on in store on dirty public flooring also. They argued that the clerk followed strict protocol and inspected each shoe at checkout and confirmed the condition of the soles with me . I did not inspect the soles. Nor was this very strict policy communicated to me. In the end the return was denied . I was a loyal Holts customer as well as Dior . This is very disappointing . read more

Updated down to two stars. Explanation to follow: The merchandise for men has changed drastically. It's no longer "traditional". What do I mean by that? A high end luxury shop for men's wear will typically sell suiting and a wide variety of it. Holt Renfrew *used* to carry nice suiting, shirts, trousers, ties, and other accessories for *gentlemen*. I'm using the above words purposely. The majority of it is gone. There are next to no neckties and only two brands of suiting are available. Canali and Brioni, and only a very limited selection. I couldn't find a section for proper button up dress shirts, if it even still exists. Classy and understated cuff links? Gone. This is no longer a store for gentlemen. They've changed their marketing to aim for a certain demographic. The 土豪 to be specific. I asked a sales associate about the loss of traditional suiting. He confirmed it. I replied, "A change in market demographics?" He confirmed it in the affirmative again. I really didn't need to be Einstein to figure this one out. You can see and hear it for yourself. English is a second language in there. Money talks, and it doesn't matter what language is used and what tawdry merchandise you're trying to push. It's about the bottom line, so I can't blame Holt for that. It's already happened in the real estate sector, but in a different manner. May as well change the name of the store to "土holt." The bulk of the clothing in here for men (actually boys no more than 25 y.o.) is ugly, tacky, gawdy, garish and any other word you can use to describe it. Think Gucci, Prada, Versace, etc T-shirt with some awful design/logo on it, gold embroidery and other tawdry embellishments. $150+. Ummm.... no thank you. I'll stick to a fitted suit and tie. Occasionally you'll see a 50+ y.o. man in there with a crew cut haircut, trying on some ill fitting, tacky and vulgar garment, with his age like cohorts lavishing praise on how nice it looks. Not! (For me at least, you look awful! 50 y.o men should not be wearing what a 20 y.o. wears.) The nail in the coffin will be when they hire a majority of the staff with bilingual 普通話 speakers, which I suspect has already happened. Needless to say, I won't be buying much in here. If I could give 0 stars I would. I ordered a goose jacket online, had to place my order 3 times because of their system glitches. I eventually receive my jacket but was double charged for it (almost 2k). I then notice the seam is torn on the inner lining of the arm. They denied the jacket as being defective (I wore it once) and aren't refunding the additional charge because "they don't see an issue". It's been 1.5 months and this has not been resolved. Just God awful customer service, ya they have nice designer shit but how they handled this situation is just grossly appalling. So I asked for 150 ml of the one I had. However, instead of selling me the Allure Homme Sport Eud De Toilette they sold me the Eau extreme. I came back and they gave me a refund and helped me get the right product. The service was good this time and would have rated a 4 out of 5 stars. Consistently poor customer service at Holt Renfrew in the shoe and clothing departments, with the exception of a lot of the cosmetics sales associates who are usually great. I'll only be going to Nordstrom from now on. Last week a Chinese sales associate walked me to another Chinese sales associate in order to ring up my purchase. They spoke under their breath to each other in Chinese and shared a laugh right in front of me. The SA who rang up my purchase did not make eye contact with me or greet me, only mumbling my total in broken English. During previous visits I've found that most of the SA's have mediocre English at best, have heavy accents to the detriment of being able to understand my needs properly, and shyly greet me to my back as I'm leaving their area. Literally mumbling "hello how are you" in a barely audible voice when I have my back to them. It's clear that this location intentionally hires sales associates to cater exclusively to the language and cultural needs of the ultra-wealthy Chinese. English is one of the two official languages in Canada and is the dominant language for doing business. Sales associates alienate English speaking customers by deviating from English on the sales floor. Every time I go to Nordstrom's, the sales associates are diverse, speak fluent English, and use direct eye contact, a clear voice, and a friendly demeanor when they greet me. read more

I've been shopping at Holts for years but I have never experienced such a hassle. I was given a promotional gift card last month, but little did I know, it was blank. NO MONEY in there! I had to deal with the staff for one hour to rectify the situation. They finally figured it out the following day and called me and said that a gift card was ready for me. I went to the store today but it took 30 minutes for them to locate the gift card. I find this a MAJOR inconvenience. You guys know how expensive parking is at Pacific Centre right? Hubby and I usually skip buying Christmas presents for each other and just go shopping together instead. I'm not big into surprises and this just seems to work for us, especially since we are usually away from home and would prefer to travel light... I wanted a new handbag and perfume so we decided to hit Holt Renfrew. They are pretty much the only game in town to have both items I wanted under one roof as well as some variety. Wow. I've never seen so many snotty, stuck on themselves people in my entire life and I shop quasi regularly at Saks and Bloomingdales in the snottiest county in California. These guys and gals have NOTHING on OC. And I'm not just talking about those affluent people who just have a natural air of snottiness to them. I'm talking about people who want to be seen and worshipped. Methinks not. It just made for an uncomfortable shopping experience. Not happy and friendly like a great shopping experience is meant to be. I guess the service is probably okay here but I tend to steer clear of perfume counters that have five (very intimidating looking) saleswomen huddled together and eyeing you down as you walk by. I never did get my Aqua di Parma and when I looked for my handbag it cost almost twice what it was going for in the US. To be fair, I will say that they had some great women's clothing lines. Also, the new store looks great but there was something a little more comfortable and accessible about the old one. Will I shop Holt Renfrew again when in Vancouver? Probably not but if you want to see what Vancouver's upper class (and wannabe upper class) look like this is your place. I'll save my money for places I know I feel comfortable. read more

But, I agreed their services are not equivalent to high end price with top notch customer services. The sales on the floor some are helpful and courteous; however, most are lazy and impatient! I like Holt Renfrew and its glitz and glamour. It's fun to shop here when you want top designer items. But the employees in the clothing, shoes and accessories section are awful and I can say this because I have shopped here many times for at least a year now. I've given them so many chances because I really like the things here but they fail. I don't understand why their unhelpful sales people (especially the females) try to be snobs and act like they are kings and queens of Hollywood when they should be trying to sell me things. Hello, it's not like you work on Rodeo Drive. The friendly, professional and consistently helpful employees of Holt Renfrew are in Louis Vuitton and Chanel. They are always patient and answer every question I have. It looks like they are the only ones who go through extensive training. The cosmetics section is fantastic too- they give me samples all the time and really generous about it too. You can get small samples for whatever you ask for (even without making a purchase) as long as you ask nicely. Note: Everything is about 15-20% more expensive than in the States! It's the only place in Vancouver for the ladies to get their all their brand name purses; LV's, Gucci, Prada, etc. But don't ask for Coach because they don't carry it anymore. If you are into designer clothing or anything designer then Holt is the place. If you don't look like you are affluent or if you are not dressed a certain way then you might be ignored by the sales staff. They all make sales commission, so they only take care of the customers who are willing to open up their wallets. I recently bought a nice Gucci wallet from them. This was a great department store - very chic and upscale. They had a variety of designers featured that one would find in most typical upscale department stores (like Neiman Marcus or Barney's in the US) such as Diesel, Prada and Burberry, but also had some pieces from designers that are bit harder to find (Comme des Garcon). The store is very well organized and it's fairly easy to find what you're looking for. While this is an upscale department store, it's still fairly laid back so one gets great customer service, but also with a warm and friendly touch. read more

The smell of good leather in the shoe section and designer bag area, the smell of Jo Malone and Laura Mercier, oh my it's intoxicating! I feel comfortable in this store even if I don't buy anything and just go window shopping. But that's not to say I don't buy from this store. I do. After many years, the recent renovation has brought Holt's to a whole new level. Things are laid out far better now that they have expanded and made more room for their clean cut displays. All the expected brands are still carried here and staff are still as accommodating as ever. My husband bought me my first LV bag 3 weeks ago and I am so unhappy with the bag size and the magnet that never ever keeps my bag closed. I went back to the store in holt renfrew in Vancouver and got the worst customer service from the manager Lori Sherman . Not only this bag cost $2000 all I wanted to do is exchange it for a different style , size , even if the purse cost more I was willing to pay more . I buy a lot of high end bags but never bought and LV bag so I thought I should do this . I took it back for the exchange bag in great condition used 3 times and the manager said there is nothing they could do because the strap apparently changed some colour . I am beyond disappointed with the service at such price and will never consider stepping Into another LV store again . I usually come to this place to shop every couple of months. They pretty much have everything if you are into high end brands. Last visit, I came with a friend just to look around. We usually go and check everything out from shoes to purses but that time, we went to the skin care and cosmetic section. As we walked thru, we passed by this long display of perfumes and was welcomed by this sweet lady named Sinead. We had no intention of buying but she was so nice and very knowledgable about the entire perfume history and she knows a lot about each and every brand. She helped us pick the scent that we wanted and gave us at least 4 suggestions. We ended up buying 2 100ml bottles and got some free samples too! When I told her that I was buying because it was my bday, she walked me thru the customer service and registered me and got a free leather luggage tag with my initials engraved! I have heard many stories about rude and snobby sale staffs in Holt Renfrew and sad to say it is true. I was in the store today and looking for Jo Malone perfume as they have a new scent that just launched. While I was at the counter non of the staffs (Asian) come to ask if I needed help. They were talking among themselves and looking at their iPhone and texting. Finally, I asked for help. Wow! This Asian girl (the staff) gave me the angry look and ask me what do I want. So I told her I'm looking for the new fragrance that Jo Malone just launched and she answered me saying she don't understand what I'm talking about and there wasn't any new fragrance that Jo Malone had just launched and then she just walked away and carried on with her conversation and told the other staffs in mandarin that I won't be buying so don't waste the time helping me out. Holt Renfrew, you are SUCKS. I also learned that Nordstrom has a Jo Malone counter as well and I just bought the new fragrance from them, it's called "English Oak & Hazelnut". From now on if I want to buy Jo Malone fragrance, I will only buy it from Nordstrom. Their service is EXCELLENCE. Oh I forgot that Holt Renfew don't understand what I'm talking about. If you Asian, you will receive great service. Otherwise, not so much. Not consistently applicable throughout all the boutiques inside the store, just the Holt staff themselves. I have received excellent service at LV, Fendi, Miu Miu, Gucci, Tiffany, and the makeup and perfume department in the basement.
