We purchased some furniture for our summer property and a sofa-bed for our condo in downtown Vancouver from The Bay on Georgia Street. After repeated calls we finally got our receipts over a month after our purchase. The salesman from the downtown location told us delivery from Kamloops to our place in Sorrento would be at no charge as we'd purchased the 5 year guarantee plan on the fabric for both orders. Call from them apologizing for the error, now delivery from Kamloops is over $200.00, (original quote was over $300.00). Not much choice right? I have never been so disappointed in the lack of communication and lack of replies to my repeated emails. Today I received a call from a man in Kelowna, wanting to know when we'd like to arrange delivery? Kelowna??? It's 134 miles away from Kamloops! Again, my email to both the furniture manager and salesman are being ignored, again. If I could give them a zero star review, I'd give The Bay in downtown Vancouver a minus. V. Elliott read more

I bought a couch and a mattress two months ago from The Bay. The couch was delivered broken and they still haven't scheduled a time to replace it. The mattress was much firmer than the store model so I called to have it replaced while inside my warranty window. They said they would call me back and never did. Now I've been going back and forth with them because they now say I'm outside my warranty window and don't have a record of my original call. The sales representatives were great but getting my actual furniture has been a multi month nightmare. read more

Although the Bay has lots of selection I find things totally overpriced here. I stopped in looking for bathroom accessories (shower curtain, etc) after looking in London Drugs and found that The Bay had pretty much the same stuff as LD except it was about 50% more expensive. As others have mentioned, I found the customer service lacking and quite snooty. If Sears isn't an example to pick up your game, I don't know what is. Long story short: Was told card was paid and cancelled, now am getting told I owe money on the CANCELLED and PAID card and am getting fees tacked on as well. Terrible customer service and frustrating practices. I signed up for a hudsons bay credit card when buying something at the store because it gave me a discount. Later, I tried to cancel the card and pay off the balance. I spent nearly three hours on the phone with a representative from customer service who eventually got me through everything - they told me that the balance on the card was paid, and that they would cancel the card. This morning, I received an email from HB saying the card is not paid, and additional fees have been added. All customer service representatives have not been helpful at all in solving my problem. I could rant on about this bullshit but I have to go back on the phone to try and deal with this. Save yourself the time and never shop here. read more

Terrible service. 10 minutes standing at the nespresso counter while the attenant gossipped with another of the store's staff only to be told "I'll be with you on a minute" then he started playing on his computer walked away on a phone call for 5 minutes, returned tovthe counter only to be ignored by both of the staff. If I could give zero starts I would. My shopping experience at Hudson's Bay Victoria has been nothing short of a nightmare. After five weeks of delays with my sofa, and delivering a defective one, I experienced more delays with the exchange process. The delivery process + the customer service have been horrendous. I paid $99 on top of my bill for delivery and so far, my order has been delayed 5 times (a total of 35 days of delay) without a semblance of compensation or customer support. The last delay happened without even informing me and I'm still waiting for my item to be delivered. The customer service line is horrible and connecting to a supervisor takes forever (I was on a call for 90 minutes until I got connected). I went back to the store today to speak with someone in-person about the issue, and (Jane, the sales person) was quite dismissive. She didn't even want to help and was just trying to end the conversation as fast as possible. I'm never shopping at Hudson Bay again! If you're making a big purchase, dealing with the bay is not worth it. read more

This department store is much better than many here in California. However, if you go to this store plan to guide yourself because asking for any help will get you no where. -Store associates- do not know: store closing time, where the bathroom is, understanding the promotions going on, being able to ring up items at any cash register, providing you help in the dressing room with sizes, knowing which level TopShop is on. read more

I cannot give it less than this, or I would. I bought a product online, and they sent me a used one, just lying in the box. I called and was promised a replacement in three days. Now, over a month later, no replacement. I have been through 5 customer service reps and requested to speak to a manager 3 times. I have sent photos numerous times and each time I am told there are no photos with the claim. Do not shop here. Very terrible service! I was at the men's department at the downtown Bay in Vancouver trying to get a pair of shoes. There were three staffs stood around chatting and not even bothering to acknowledge me. When I approach them, one of the staffs gave me a very angry look when I asked for service. He was so reluctant and asked me rudely saying "What do you want?" I was pissed off and I walk away. Then I tried to look for another staff who will want to help me but sad to say they were all busy standing around chatting or looking at their iPhone. read more

Back in the good old days, the Hudson's Bay was a wonderful department store. Every department had a cheerful cashier, help was available on every floor, and a real person answered the switchboard. Now there is rarely anyone available to help you and at best there are 2 cashiers per floor, often with long line-ups. Ordering online is a disaster. On 3 separate occasions I have tried to place an order, but after hitting "submit", the website just spins endlessly. I tried calling the main store for assistance and got an automatic message that the store was now closed (in the middle of the day on a Saturday). When I called the 800 number, a robot directed me to the wrong department. After that, I was disconnected. INFURIATING. Amazon, here I come. No one wonder retail shops are dying and you are taking over the world. read more

Do you ever wonder why The Bay ALWAYS has big sales going on? Don't be fooled when you think you are getting a deal! The original prices are marked up extremely high, so even when there is 70% off you could get MUCH cheaper at US or other places. This is the Bay, does anybody really read a review for the Bay? Probably not, and I'm really only writing for one reason - the customer service. First off I will get out of the way the obvious: huge but safe collection centrally located. Haphazardly laid out so that you need to walk the whole floor to find what you want (I know this is their intent but it makes me shop online more and more). Ok, that's done. Now, the real reason I am writing this review is because I went shopping for something for my wife today. Yes, I went to buy her a dress. When you go to the men's floor it is teeming with women shopping for their men (or themselves perhaps). When I went to the women's floor I may as well have had bubonic plague, nobody will help you willingly. When you eventually flag down a saleswoman, it is like she is trying to answer your questions in monosyllables so that she run away as quickly as possible. Now, I'm a nice normal fellow, not creepy and have a charming smile. Really. That little hedgehog in my pic is only half as cute as me. On the Bay's women's floor they have special lighting that makes men appear to be naked under trench coats with drool running down our faces. At least, that's the only plausible explanation I can come up with. So good-riddance Bay. I found lots of nice things on-line at better prices and PayPal welcomed my business. The on-line stores have chat buttons with friendly people who answer questions with full sentences. I'd like to buy local, the Bay just doesn't want me to. read more

Perhaps visiting The Bay during the Olympics wasn't the best idea. The lines were super long, the store itself was crowded and cluttered, and guess what? They failed to mention to people that a lot of the items they were selling in the cordoned off "Olympic section" were also available throughout the store where you didn't have to wait in any lines! Fortunately I only waited about 20 minutes in line. I talked to other visitors though that had lined up for upwards of two hours. I'm a big fan of the famous Bay blankets so that's all I was really looking for. I'm sure if I'm back in Vancouver I'll give this store a miss though. I could get the blanket online or from another location in BC. I was hoping that the store would be a lot like a Nordstrom. Instead it was more like a JC Penny. read more

This review is for the new renovated Mens Department on level 6 specifically. First of all let me say the new renovations are fantastic. Pity about the poor lighting in the change rooms 4/5 Second the new inventory is far better, but could certainly be improved 4/5 Now the most important thing a luxury department store has to offer.. Service. 1/5 This is based on four separate visits between myself and a colleague to purchase suits and jackets. (Boss, ZZegna). We are both middle aged high salaried guys who are friendly and have fairly average expectations. Out of all the individuals in the most high-end department there is a common theme: they are all very impressed with themselves, and the service quality is very stuffy and very poor. There is one exception but for various reasons this staff member also does not meet the mark. On almost every occasion the staff have been predatory and yet somehow annoyed that you are there to spend $800-$1000 on a garment. They are always too important to provide you with good service unless you demand it and asking for suggestions is not going to get you far you will have to do the research yourself. They are only interested in hustling you in and out as quickly as possible. Asking any of them there to put a look together for you, which is a good salespersons dream question is met with a look of horror, and after trying to minimize their time being wasted they will come back with overpriced options that don't work for you and won't fit. (You know you are dealing with a professional when everything they hand you fits your size the first time) My friend was getting so tired of the attitude he took his suit and bought it in the shoe department so they wouldn't get any commission. (that's another story) - I ended up buying a few garments but left disappointed with the quality of service compared to other high end mens boutiques. I really want The Bay to be better. The people in this section look the part. But here's some suggestions if anyone at The Bay is listening: Drop the holier-than-thou attitude, particularly in this sub-dept. Drop the sales hustle. Genuine (not fake) friendly service makes up for any professional shortcomings a salesperson may have and will smooth over the entire shopping experience. Bring your top sales staff into weekly meetings with your buyers and fashion trend experts and stylists to learn how to put looks together for your customers. Exploit the personal shopping angle. Why after spending $1000 on a suit jacket was I not asked for my personal information and then given a call a few weeks later with an incentive to come in and spend an hour for free with a personal stylist? The Bay needs to get their game on. Nordstrom is coming. read more

Personally I find this bay a little confusing. It doesn't help that the escalators are usually broken... at least whenever I go. There are four or five floors of items, the first floor is new and Holts looking and then when you go upstairs to the clothing isles it gets... older? Darker and scary really. It's pretty hard to find help around this Bay understandable though since it's quite big. Prices are obviously higher than American Prices but they do have good deals every week and usually during holidays and events. I like their selection though they always high a large variety of sizes, colors. And they even have a higher end clothing floor on the second or third floor which is nice and new. They also have (or had) a cute bakery that had really nice treats and cakes. Loved it a lot but haven't had the chance to visit in a while, it was also the single most quietest place to sip a cup of tea and get some work done in downtown. All in all a nice place. Down by the Bay, where the watermelons grow, back to my home I dare not go.... Ok here's the thing with the Bay, they usually have lots of cool shit, but finding your way around and finding someone to help you can be a challenge. It's a department store thing. I never get lost in regular stores or have trouble finding help (getting their attention is another story, but I can usually find them at least) but department stores are so freakin big that I feel like a mouse in a maze trying to find cheese. You can find some good sales at the Bay, I have found some pretty good ones in the kitchenware department. I got a gift card for like $150 or something, so I decided to buy a new frying pan (the better to hit the BF with when he misbehaves), a cupcake tray (which I love), an upside down cake pan (I can't remember the other name for them) and a slow cooker. Almost everything was on sale, so I almost got all of it with my gift card. We also bought some good bedsheets since my stinky dog ripped a big hole in my fitted sheet when he farted. I kid you not. That dog is rancid. We ended up going down to the Bay on Boxing Day in hopes of a sale on bedsheets but unfortunately there wasn't anything not "normal" enough for us. We ended up buying Ralph Lauren (I am saying it in that snooty voice cuz it was *that* expensive) leopard print sheets instead. Maybe I just don't understand department stores. That's what The Bay is: a department store. It's got everything: makeup, clothes, accessories, kitchen stuff, etc. When I needed to get something for a baby shower I was going to, a co-worker recommended checking out The Bay, so I did. They happened to be having their "famous" Bay Day sale when I went and think I got a pretty good deal on some adorable baby clothes. So when I fell in love with a new brand of shoes and discovered that it was on sale on The Bay's website for only $20, I figured I'd check it out in store. After all, The Bay only offers free shipping on orders over $99. Going back to me not understanding department stores: it took me for-freaken-ever to find these shoes. This store (obviously) is huge. The shoe section? Also huge. Since I knew the shoes I wanted were on sale, I went over to the sale section first. Alas, no luck. So I wandered. Eventually I found the brand of shoes I wanted and, somehow, actually found the exact pair of shoes I wanted! But, they were a size 10. I'm a size 7. See the problem? I happened to find a sales associate and asked her if she had any other sizes. She huffed, said no and walked away! Uh, lady, I wasn't done asking questions. Before she could even let me ask to try on a different pair of shoes, she was already gone, leaving me standing there with two different shoes in my hand (there was another cute pair of shoes I wanted to try on). I then tried to find a different sales associate to help me, since she clearly didn't want to. After searching for a good while, I gave up and left (seriously, where were they all?). Now I know that if I want something specific, don't go to The Bay for it. If I'm going to need help from a sales associate, also don't go to The Bay. Unless I'm looking for perfume. If you're looking for a big department store that provides very little customer service--you've got it here. I'm going to point out that their clothing and home departments are usually amazingly understaffed leaving customers chasing staff members for help or waiting for seemingly hours for price checks on unmarked items, clarifying their promotions, etc. ...or simply resorting to "self-help" up until the part where you're already in front of the lady/gentleman at the cash register. I can sympathize with their staff since it is usually the upper management who is responsible for placing enough bodies on the floor to accommodate enough customers, if not everyone. Hence, I'm not surprised to see only few friendly faces in their massive store. It has been like this for more than a decade and I have a feeling this will not change soon. Additionally, their POS system is archaic with which their staff has been poorly trained to take on. I really feel bad for their people! On the contrary, their downtown cosmetics department is usually well-staffed that it seems (to me) other parts of the store aren't getting the same TLC. The Bay is run down and sad. The main floor is more nicely designed than its other floor and as you travel upward on the escalator, each floor becomes more bizarre and depressing (i.e. kinda ghetto). I went to the top floor a couple weeks ago to look at vacuums and it had creaky, uneven floors and all the ambience of a hostel. I've found staff to be hard to find if you have questions and not all that friendly when you track them down. Selection is so-so and prices not all that great. Only worth shopping if there is a major sale, otherwise it's worth the drive south of the border. It's only saving grace is the Nespresso shop tucked away in the basement area. read more

Today we went to the Bay to fight the crowds and stand in long lines for the Olympic store. My husband was not thrilled. The store is actually very nice. I managed to find a really nice London Fog coat for 1/2 off and then another 40% off that. ($41 total). That was a bargain! However, the merchandise for the Olympics is another story. It is expensive and the lines are around the corner. They are trying to manage the crowds but it seems an impossible task. Luckily, we found out about the 5th floor and we managed to get what we wanted up there without all of the lines. That worked for us! Thank you to everyone at the Bay store that is working hard to manage the Olympic fans while still maintaining that Canadian charm and kindness. You guys rock! read more

What happened to The Bay? I feel like it went from over-priced, garbage brands in a pretty junky looking department store to this fabulous, well thought out (still slightly overpriced) but incredibly desirable upscale place to be. So The Bay definitely re-branded a bit, their heritage Bay items range from a candle to a canoe and all of them would be welcome at my house. Their blankets are still to die for. The whole section is worth a browse just for the sake of seeing what they've come up with for their yellow, blue, green and red. I've used their jewelry repair and their optical and both didn't disappoint. In fact, I'd recommend The Bay Optical, they were fast, cheap and I was really pleased with the outcome of my visit. The Bay now has TOP SHOP and Top Man. ooooh I've been waiting forever for Top Shop in Canada. Mac is in The Bay. Kitchenware is great, electronics okay, but for me it's all about the ladies wear.. I love the Bay. I've always shopped at the Bay since I was little kid back home and, aside from that one time I went there when I was teen to get a free make-up session at one of those booths and came out looking like a street lady, I've always found it to be the best go-to place for everything you need during the summer sales. It's so much easier when it's one-stop shopping! The recently renovated second floor has made the Bay my favourite shoe shop. I love the set up and the selection, and the people are so friendly there. The women's clothing section on the 3rd floor is also a popular spot for me, since they've got such a large variety of brands and sales going on each week. The only place I've yet to venture into is the make-up area, and it's not because of my bad experience mentioned above. It's just that those people look so desperate for someone to try their product that it intimidates me bit... But overall, I've gone to the Bay for clothes, shoes, accessories, kitchenware and bedding since I've moved downtown. It's become a staple to check when I'm on the look out for something, and I'm so happy it's finally investing some money into renovations! read more

Do not order anything online! I made a purchase of 3 items for a total of $1200. I received only 1 item and my order status for all items shows delivered. I called the call centre which is not located in this country only to receive the worst ever customer service. I keep getting the run around being told the remainder of my order is on its way and now 3 weeks later I am still waiting. The last update I was told on Monday was I would have my order by Friday. It is now Friday and still no order. I called the call centre this morning and they are now saying it will arrive on Tuesday.... now the icing on the cake is my credit card was also charged an additional $490. When I asked the first call centre person to look into this she put me on hold and we got disconnected. I called back and the second person wanted to transfer me to the credit card department. When I refused as it is not a Hudson Bay credit card and asked for a manager she straight up hung up on me. I tried calling the local store only to find out they do not open until noon..... I called the call centre again, got someone who spoke better English and he said the additional charge was because one item needed to be outsourced and it was an authorization charge that would be refunded. When I asked what item it was for it turns out it was for the 1 item I have already received 3 weeks ago. I am confused why I was charged an authorization charge for something I had already paid for and when I asked he all of a sudden could not understand my question. Apparently the refund will come in 3-5 business days. To sum it up if you are bored during Covid and looking for the run around and something to occupy your time with order online from the bay. I feel a bit strange reviewing a place that already has over 60 reviews, but I felt compelled to add my voice because of the good feelings this place exudes. Walking into the Hudson's Bay Company reminds me of one of my first memories going downtown as a child with my Grandmother, and traveling all the way to one of the top floors where the toy department was to pick something out. Little did I know at the time this was all a clever distraction so that she and my mother could make their way down each floor while I was satiated with my new Star Wars figurine. The renovations to the new location look snappy, the place is still enormous, I can barely believe that they're able to afford all of this prime real estate downtown. It's got a brand new trendy Topshop located in the basement which apparently was quite popular on opening day. I was there just to buy a new pillow, and not only did they have a great selection but they were all 55% off. Even the cashier was incredulous to the deal. I'm not much of a religion and country kind of guy, but giving money in exchange for goods at the oldest commercial corporation in North America gives me a warm sense of historic nostalgia. This review is for the NEW BAY! Yes folks there is a new Bay in town and it is in the same location as the original. Boy is it beautiful inside! Rainy Sunday was in a mood and thought I would pick my spirits up by doing some retail therapy. Typically I avoid the Bay. It just never appealed to me. But after listening to their new commercials and hearing about all the work they are doing inside I thought I would give it a second chance. The moment you walk in you feel like you are in a luxurious department store in the true sense of the word! Take a stroll throughout even if you are not shopping for something in that department, you will be impressed. The mens floor has moved to the sixth floor and it was such a change. The staff were incredibly helpful and positive. I also felt as though the selection improved. I can't say enough about it. I am now a fan of The Bay! read more

In the last year, the Bay downtown (and in general) has done a lot of re-branding of itself. I'm unsure how this has translated for women's apparel and cosmetics, but for menswear, kitchen/dining room items, linens and home decor, the Bay is now a store I happily shop in (especially this location downtown). In the last year, the Bay downtown has transformed itself from being a standard department store to appearing as a mid-to-high end location. I say appearing since you can find a wide variety of name and local brands at the Bay. I wouldn't consider any of the items at the top or bottom ends of price or quality; however, the items are displayed smartly, cleanly and appealing - showing the diversity or intended use. For a person that isn't in-tune with fashion or decor, seeing different ways to use something or pair it differently is great. The Bay downtown has extremely stepped up their service in the men's department. With the renovations completed, the men's department now offers a large range of brands, from Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Lacoste, DKNY, Hudson Bay brand, and many more. On the men's floor, they now offer a free cafe where you can get a free hot or cold beverage for when you're shopping. Also, they have added a few staff to the floor that have the purpose of helping your choose clothes and give recommendations if you wish (kind of like a personal shopper light). For me, on two occasions, I had some great help finding me clothes that I actually felt made me look good and were sometimes cheaper than the clothes I had originally picked out for myself. What I have experienced with menswear, has also translated into the other departments I've shopped at. In particular, the kitchen/dining department has a great selection of glassware, plates, pans, knives, appliances, etc. Once again, you can find a large variety of store and name brand items and again they will not be the very top or bottom ends. For example, The Bay offers Henckel knives, but only the one man series (which is still very good, but not as strong as the two man series). What you'll also find with the Bay downtown is it may offer the same brand names as other places, but you will usually find more selection than other places. For example, you can buy a Kitchenaid immersion blender almost anywhere. However, at the Bay, you can get it in one of 15 different colours. Or, the Bay sells Soda Stream systems, but they have 5 or 6 different models in a variety of colours, when many other locations usually only sell 1 or 2 models in 1 or 2 colours. In my opinion, the appearance and customer service at the Bay downtown has improved significantly in the last year from what it once was. The quality or selection of items has also made the downtown Bay a place that can rival any mid-range shop or department store. It is important to note, the prices found at the Bay are typically the suggested retail price or what can seem a little on the higher side for what you are getting. However, if you can wait until a sale, the prices can be great! (i.e. Menswear near dad's day, winter wear in February, etc). Overall, the Bay downtown has really improved itself from what it once was offering a good selection and quality of items, along with good customer service. I'm reviewing the ground floor which has the deli/bakery.. Soup. They always have 5/6 different choices of soup. I will come here just to get the soup. Their coconut chicken curry soup is pretty good with a little thickness of a bisque. They also have lobster bisque which is decent. The bakery section is pretty awesome too. When I'm craving comfort food, it's usually a muffin and a soup. Some days they also have 'sweet buns' (mmmm, almond). Their small deli also has very bad things in it like a smokie wrapped in pastry. And yes I've had it and YES IT IS GOOD. I feel guilty when I eat it. read more

To whom it may concern, I recently had a negative customer experience while patronizing an HBC retail location (the Vancouver one, located at the intersection of West Pender and Granville st downtown). I went to shop on the newly renovated 6th floor menswear outlet (very nice, btw) and I collected my items with the intent to checkout. I gathered my purchases and took them to the till (since the floor was still under construction not every terminal was functioning, it took several minutes before I could be seen). When my turn came around and before any item had been rung up I declared my intent to pay via pre-paid credit cards (one MasterCard, the other was Visa). Immediately the cashier retorted that your company does NOT accept pre-paid credit cards. Let the sink in for a moment. HBC, the company that SELLS prepaid MasterCards via your Zellers subsidiary (and perhaps at HBC too, I didn't check), does not accept prepaid credit cards. I could scarcely believe it. The man at the register seemed flustered, I pressed him further. He stammered something about how they do, but they don't(?) due to the potential for fraudulent activity. Now I was insulted. I was holding up the line so I decided not to pursue the matter there and then. I paid with debit and walked out. Four shirts, it came to just over two hundred dollars. The escalator was inoperable at the time on account of the construction so I took the 6 or so floors on foot down to the SkyTrain level (why do the down escalators work but the up ones don't; aren't they reversible?). As I turned to leave, the second issue. The cashier had left a dye tag on one of my shirts. I could barely hear the alarm over the din of the adjacent food court. What if I had walked out with it? It's not like anyone came over to check on me ("Hey sir, would you like some help with that?"). What would I have done; doomed to wander the earth with this plastic tag of shame adorning me? I was on my own. I took my bag over to a nearby Topman retail counter and flagged down an associate. She was very pleasant and more than happy to remove the tag from my purchase. I took the opportunity to inquire about the HBC pre-paid credit card policy. As it turns out, they DO, in fact, accept them. She had even personally accepted them in the past. Imagine my surprise. Since it only took me about 5 minutes to get from the top floor to the bottom floor it is unlikely that the store policy changed in such a brief window. I am therefore forced to conclude that it was something about me personally that set of a red flag with the cashier upstairs. "Take 40% off the last ticketed price" Now that's my kind of sign and one you'll often see at The Bay. Seriously, I don't know how they do it! I often find shopping here frustrating, especially trying to get help in the shoe department. That said, it's pretty much always good for a deal. They do carry a good stock of leggings, stockings, tights. On this latest trip we were in the market for lingerie which included one of us getting properly fitted for a bra. The ladies know what they're doing in that area! While my friend was taking care of that I was trying on sexy items in the crazy mark-down section. Got a super cute piece that makes me feel like a million $$ but only cost $15! I also got 5 for $25 of their La Lingerie panties that are really pretty, amazingly soft and comfortable. Used to shop here, but have learned they are still selling Ivanka Trump's merchandise. I'm so disappointed with this iconic Canadian store. A short while ago in the U.S. it was "Made in America" week - ha fat chance. Donnie wants every body to bring back business to the states while he & Ivanka are still in China, Indonesia, etc. Again ha ha - she said she would "Empower Women" - get equal pay for women and get maternity/paternity leave for the U.S. What has she DONE - absolutely nothing, except expose her fashions every day on TV. Her workers in these countries live away from their families - live in factories and earn a pittance for their work. A whole group of us decided to boycott this store - no, it's not going to make them go broke that's for sure, but we're spreading our boycott around. At last call The Brick (also Canadian) was still selling Trump mattresses! Nordstrom's still selling Trump stuff, but that was to be expected. The Bay in Downtown Vancouver greatly surpasses all other suburban mall locations that you may have been to. First of all, the building is lovely. Second of all, it is HUGE. You can find anything and everything here. For example, I have (at one time or another) purchased makeup, perfume, clothes, shoes, underwear, wine glasses, a gift for a newborn baby, and a couch here. I am always impressed by the furniture section and the amount of fashion designers that The Bay carries (I previously thought that I had to go down to the US to Nordstrom or Macy's to find certain brands, until I found them at The Bay in Downtown Vancouver). Customer service varies by floor. On some floors you will find someone to help you right away. On other floors you will be left wandering looking for somebody (anybody) to help you or tell you where the changing rooms are. Still, it has become something of a Vancouver icon. After all, it has survived the Olympics and at least one notorious hockey riot. Despite the fact that this company is sadly now owned and run by Americans, it is worth a look. And it is also conveniently located above a major transit hub (both the Canada Line and the Expo/Millenium lines stop under the store at Granville Station). read more

I'm excited that "The Room" finally opened up. Its a nifty little place to browse instead of Holts. Can't deal with that kind of an atmosphere anymore. Spent enough time and money in there to keep dealing with their unprofessional behavior, which they seem to like staffing their store with, but anyhow.. I loveeeee The Room, you can get quite lost in there, but there is tons to look at, smaller sections than at Holts, but bright, less pressure, things are on more of a discount than Holts ever will be hold. I wandered around looking around at all the merchandise, sizes were slim pickin's since they were having discount on almost everything that was in there, but it was good to know, theres a place that carries Azzadine Alaia, Halston Heritage & Giambattista Valli all under the same roof. If you're looking for someone to treat you like there's noone else as special, then ask for Rita Bisla. She's the Chief Adventurer in the hbc gift registry on the 5th floor. My husband and I are about to celebrate our 10th anniversary and only recently bought a cabin into which we could empty our storage locker. I found a wedding card with a receipt from hbc gift registry that we had never claimed! Peter's work mates had taken the time to pick something special and wouldn't it be fantastic to make something with the Kitchen Aid mixer on our 10th anniversary. Rita listened to my story and treated me like a bride to be. She and her manager Shane had the colour I wanted, ready for me the next day! Am I the first to review The Bay store downtown? Well, it's a big store, so I won't try to take on the whole thing. They're a grand old department store, so they have a a bit of everything - fashion, furniture, china, make-up, jewellery (including a pretty competent jewellery repair service),and of course, food. My favourite floor is the ground floor, which is where the kitchen toys live and where you'll also find a very nice deli/lunch counter, wine shop focused on BC products, and chocolate shop. The deli counter has long been my place to stop and get a samosa and a Snapple, but I'm also fond of their pastries, sandwiches, and variety of salads. It's super-handy for when I'm heading back home and need a couple things for dinner before hitting the SkyTrain. They make everything fresh daily. For a fuller lunch, there's also a huge cafeteria on the 6th floor (the furniture floor) with loads of seating and occasionally, live entertainment. I really think this is one of Vancouver's best-kept lunch secrets. Lastly, if you're going to buy stuff here, try to wait for the weekends, as this seems to be when lots of merchandise goes on sale. read more

Boxing Day can be a ferocious day for retail employees everywhere, but the least you can do is have a system that works. And THAT is where The Bay has disappointed shoppers yet again. Yesterday, the busiest annual shopping day, the MEN'S SHOES DEPARTMENT came fully equipped with a clutter of dull, aimless employees. There was a line for obtaining your proper shoe size, which was a good idea, if only they hadn't stopped the creative process there. You grab a shoe you like, wait in line, and what was supposed to happen next was really just up in the air somewhere. "Let's have people line up for shoe sizes this year!" "Brilliant! Do we put up a sign?" "No! The shoppers will figure it out for themselves!" "Great! And then what?" "What do you mean 'what'? Then, they wait in line!" "Sounds like a plan! Let's do it!" And wait in line we all did. About an hour into the wait, we decided to look for said dull, aimless employees wandering around the shoe department. There were about 4 employees actually digging away for shoes in the store room whilst the rest of them walked around pondering the rising agitation of a tiresome crowd. However, the 4 employees going in and out of the store room were NOT getting sizes for the people in line. Instead, they had other customers sitting comfortably waiting to be served. Why aren't those bozos in line? **Here's a suggestion: have at least TWO employees SPECIFICALLY assigned to dig away in the store rooms so that your ingenious idea of a line up for shoe sizes actually works! Then, station as many zombie employees as you want around the department to help with fitting and what-not! Yesterday, the most effective thing employees were doing was sending people to the back of a stagnant line. Finally, a male employee in his 30s with some sense came to the line and moved it along a little until it was our turn. He got us our sizes and we left to try them on. We even bought a pair. See? EASY! Have someone attend to the line continuously and it's a home run! read more

In store, I have always had decent experience. The downtown location is always very busy and it seems like they could use extra staff to deal with the high traffic of shoppers not to mention how massive the size of the store is. The people who work here are always polite and nice and helpful, but not over the top friendly, which is fine! Shopping experience=3 Stars The store is overwhelming and takes a lot of time to sift through clothing racks. Online shopping from thebay.com is such a disappointment. This was my first time shopping online with them. What a nightmare. After waiting 2 weeks for an order that was "express post delivery free of charge" they sent the wrong colour of shirt. No big deal, I got a discount and reordered again. They were kind to offer "expedited delivery to be shipped and received the next day" WOW! How excited I was to finally wear the shirt I fell in love with! I called 2 days after ordering because I didn't receive it. It was found at a store, and would be shipped out that day. Awesome! Well, here I am.... a week later, still don't have it, still hasn't shipped because now the shirt is so hard to find and basically sold out across Canada. Thank God they offered me 15% off my order for all the inconvenience, anger and disappointment I've had waiting a little over 3 weeks for. Oh! By the way, I still don't have it... read more
