Buyer Beware: Our Nightmare Experience with Hughston Homes in Augusta, GA
This has been, without question, the worst experience we've ever had in purchasing a home and this is our third new home build. Hughston Homes has proven to be completely disorganized, unprofessional, and careless from the top down. If you're considering building with them, I urge you to read this entire review and think twice before moving forward.
1. Missed Deadlines and Poor Communication
From the beginning, nothing was done on time. Communication was chaotic and uncoordinated at every stage. We had to delay closing multiple times due to inconsistencies and a complete lack of accountability. Whenever we voiced concerns, we were told to "trust the process" only to be disappointed again and again.
2. Drainage Disaster Covered Up
Throughout the build, we noticed the left side of the yard was constantly wet. We were told it was "just disturbed ground" and would clear up. In reality, water was streaming from a neighboring property. Their solution? Cover it up with drainage rocks. When we kept pushing the issue, they eventually hired a cheap landscaping company that did a horrible job and water was pooling horrifically around the driveway.
Out of frustration, we hired the French Drain Specialist (Excellent by the way). His words: "This is the worst French drain I've ever seen." He installed a proper drainage system that finally resolved the issue. When we asked Hughston Homes for reimbursement, they refused, saying we should have "given them the chance to fix it." But after months of failed attempts and poor work, our trust was gone.
3. Concrete Catastrophe
After closing, they were supposed to come back to pressure wash the red clay off the driveway and porch. When they did, a piece of wood embedded in the porch concrete was revealed. Instead of owning the mistake, a worker (Mr. Tony) yanked the wood out, causing a long crack to the foundation. He filled the hole with mismatched concrete, leaving a very noticeable and unattractive blemish.
We escalated the issue to the warranty manager, Carl, who dismissed it, stating it was "normal" and "the color will fade." He even belittled his own employee in front of us, saying Mr. Tony was "just a worker bee." How were we supposed to know the hierarchy of their internal operations?
Attempts to contact Carl again were blocked by a customer care rep named Chauncey, who informed me via email that "Carl cannot call you" and that the issue was considered resolved. Meanwhile, our neighbors' porches have no cracks or concrete issues at all.
4. Unacceptable Construction Quality
We were forced to come to the property daily to oversee the build ourselves. They were painting our home the wrong color until we caught the error. Their response? They banned us from the property for holding them accountable.
It doesn't end there:
* Appliances were scratched.
* Floors were not protected; red clay was tracked throughout the house.
* Windows were installed slanted.
* Concrete blemishes, rushed work, and a general lack of care were evident everywhere.
This company claims to build "quality homes," but our experience says otherwise. For the price hardworking families pay, there should be far more attention to detail, honesty, and accountability. We spent over $10,000 of our own money fixing issues that Hughston Homes either caused or refused to resolve.
DO NOT BUY a Hughston Home. If we hadn't stayed vigilant, things would've been far worse. Unfortunately, our voices were treated as a nuisance rather than valued input from paying customers.Avoid Hughston Homes at all costs. We hope our review helps prevent others from falling victim to this disorganized and careless builder. read more
