In March 2017, we worshipped at Wananalua Congregational Church in Hana. It was a small congregation, and 25-30% of attendees were visitors, but everyone was really friendly, and everyone was invited to a coffee social immediately after the service. There were several things that stood out to me. 1. Visitors were greeted at the beginning of the service, and we were asked to stand and introduce ourselves. I wasn't quite prepared for that, but we both stood and Scott graciously and smoothly introduced us as visitors on vacation from Alaska. 2. During the children's portion of the service, the congregation has a song that they sing as the children are gathering.... I thought it was a lovely way to welcome children to worship and it reminds them how very important and precious they are to the congregation (and God). 3. Worship closed with a song, then everyone forms a big circle holding hands (around the pews) for a final blessing. I liked this- it was a way to remind me that we were worshipping in community with others. Honestly, it was the first time I had actually taken the time to look at those around me since I had been wholly focused on my own worship experience. Overall, it was a great congregation and we would attend church there again if/when we visit Hana in the future.

Dang, am I about to get a first review in Maui?!…read more This church is in the absolute middle of nowhere. Well, as much as you can be in Maui. It's far from everything, but especially far from the main population centers on the island. If you want to hike to the summit of Haleakala from the sea...this is the most logical place to start, that's what brought me here. You have to hike a short distance (0.3 mile) down a "4X4" road (it's not really...any car could do this, but you really shouldn't) to access the site. There are great views of the ocean and an insanely well-manicured lawn as well as some "ruins" of...something. This church also provides restrooms and showers but...none of the water was working when I was here. My timid Uber driver refused to drop me off at the gate to the 4X4 road, adding another 2 miles to my already long hike to the summit. It was a hot day, and I was pretty parched by the time I got to the church. I was looking forward to cooling off with the shower but...there was no running water when I was here and the bathrooms were locked. I'd suggest you don't count on them either. This place is easy to miss if you aren't paying attention. And most tourists won't drive this section of road (they'll turn around at Hana, or at the The Pools at 'Ohe'o). This section of road has a nasty reputation but it is really not that bad now. High clearance isn't necessary, let alone 4WD. The road gets a bad reputation from people that haven't driven in it the last 5 years. It reminds me of the road to McCarthy up here in Alaska, so much negative hype then you drive it and think "When is the hard part?" and before you know it, it's over. But I digress. If you're driving through, this is a place to get out, stretch your legs, and take in the views.

Love the fresh smell of the ocean breezes and open windows during the service. Many people enjoy this church since it's small, Hawaiian based and people are friendly. It's worth going and checking it out. Bring your family. Also visit other churches while you are here visiting. There is always something for everyone's spiritual beliefs and needs. If you do attend a service, I hope you enjoy it!

Since church life is so very contextual, let me simply give some indicators so folks will know if this is the place for them. In general, this is an older congregation that has a family feel to it. The service is in both Hawaiian and English and runs a little over an hour. The liturgy us pretty traditional with organ, piano, and an occasional other special music. Theologically, this is a United Church of Christ congregation so will tend to be more progressive when it comes to women, LGBTQ folks, immigration, etc. They are not scared to talk about how our faith impacts social life -- a faith that some may deem "political" and would rather the church not talk about social issues. The pastor is friendly, welcoming, and clearly loved by the church. We have found the messages inspiring, challenging, and hopeful. This church is not one of those contemporary band-driven congregations, so if that's what you are looking for, this may not be the place for you.

We went to the Alpha group and were surprised that the Alpha "leaders" didn't know the answers to many of our questions about what exactly the church's theology. We were able to talk to the associate pastor, Andrew, later that night and asked him a lot of the questions. We found out they are a very charismatic church. We were told by the associate pastor they believe in speaking in tongues, he prefers with interpretation, prophesying and raising the dead back to life in this day and age. The reason I gave it a 1, is because you really have to ask someone who is actually running and working for the church and do some digging to find out exactly what they believe, not the "volunteers or worshippers that go there". Unfortunately, I think many people just go there to get their Sunday worship on and truly do not know the root theology of this church. They also have a female associate pastor, Jody. So if you are looking for Reformed Theology this is not the church for you. It is definitely on the Pentecostal side which is not advertised nor do a lot of their church body realize IMHO.
