We stopped here to try their famous beer and really enjoyed the experience. I ordered the Tripel, and it was excellent--definitely worth the visit. We sat outside and enjoyed the atmosphere while taking in the surroundings. It was a great place to relax and enjoy a traditional Belgian beer. Unfortunately, we arrived too late to take the brewery tour and learned that they close at 6:00 PM. That's on us, and we'll have to save the tour for a future visit. I was in Bruges for a day because I came here on a cruise and I was on a mission to have Belgium beer and Belgium Fries. We came to this spot because it is the actually brewery. Fun fact they run the beer under the city and into the different pubs. When we walked in we were impressed by all the little tables. We got lucky becuase the weather was perfect and we were able to walk right up to the bar and place an order. We both got the wheat beer. Once we got the beer we were told that we needed to order the food at the table. We were able to find a table on the back in a sunny spot which was perfect. We waited for a while and we kept trying to get the attention of the waitress. We kept making excuses for her because she looked like she was having a bad day and she was the only one for all the tables. We were finally able to wave her over and she came and put in our order for fries and mayo. A few moments later she brough them out and we were thrilled! The first were elite level fries. They were thick cut, freshly fried, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Safe to say we accomplished the mission of the fries. The beer was perfectly cold and crisp and it was the perfect pair after spending the morning doing a walking tour. Overall, the food and the beer what phenomenal the service was nothing to write home about but the ambience made up for it. An easy walk from the city center. They're located in a square, so the entrance is easy to miss. It's like a small hallway. The tour is to the right, and the beers are to the left. I did not do the brewery tour. I just wanted to try their draft beers. Each glass is no more than about 4 euros. The courtyard looks busy/full, but the staff is attentive. This was a really fun place and I'm glad we stopped by! It's between touristy shit and conveniently located. They have a shop, restaurant, bar, and they offer tours of the brewery. I've already dragged my non-beer-drinking mother to Carlsberg so I wasn't going to test my luck with going on another brewery tour. Instead, we decided to try some of their beers and sit outside to enjoy the sun. The queue waiting for the bar was very long and intimidating but it moves pretty quickly. As far as I could see, they don't really offer a menu so you have to like squint and look at the shit they have in random spots on the wall. Most of their beers are very strong so I ordered something on the lower end (that was still like 9% lol). They have a bunch of seating inside and outside and despite being busy, it was pretty easy or lucky for us to find a table to enjoy. Definitely worth a visit if you like beer. read more

We were mainly here to try their craft beers and did not do the brewery tour. Oldest brewery within the premise of the city with production onsite since the 1850s. We went on a canal boat tour before heading here where we got to see the other side of the stunning brick building which has been well cared for. I am a beginner beer drinker and loved both the Bruges Zot and the Hendrik. We wanted to get some finger food to go with our beer but their kitchen doesn't open until 6pm which was disappointing. Review for the brewery tour- Enjoyable brewery tour (despite the thoughtless folks who brought a toddler to this). The tour is not toddler appropriate and wish they would have enforced this. 1. There are quite steep stairs that little ones will have trouble with. 2. The tour guide doesn't have a mic, so it was hard to hear over the wheels on the bus go round & round (although the kid gets points for adorableness) or crying. Cute brewery, was recommended by our B&B as a place that we should try to get to and it was definitely a really fun experience. The location is convenient- can walk from the city center. We got to learn a lot about their local beer. Ample seating space. Right by the water- nice to get a window seat for good people watching. Wifey, doggy and I really enjoyed the beer garden in front of the restaurant. It was a Saturday, nice sunny day so it was very busy. We quickly found a table for 2 ... when they are this busy you will need to walk up to outside bar for beers or wave madly when you see one of the few waiters they have outside. For beer we enjoyed the blond - a nice 6% abv lighter beer with just a hint of fruit flavor aftertaste. Perfect for a warm day!! They have higher ABV in the bottle which many others were enjoying as well. Food - we had cheese and bread which was tasty and went well with the blond. The best part of lunch was their Flemish beef stew which was made in their darkbeer sauce. It was so tasty, tender beef, rich gravy like sauce - I highly recommend this!! Big, bright, open brewpub layout. Lots of seating space and tables so finding a spot even on a Friday/Saturday night was not an issue. The beer highlights here are the Trippel and the Quadrupel. At 9% and 11%, they pack a punch! So be careful because the beer is super tasty and goes down smooth. I did the brewery tour, which is 12 euros and includes a blanche beer at the taproom after the 45 minute tour is over. The highlight of the tour is going on the roof of the brewery - the view you get of the whole city of Bruges is exceptional from that vantage point. Booked a tour for our day trip to Bruges. While the tour was ok (I've been on better brewery visits and our guide was ehh) it was so worth the visit to the rooftop for amazing views of Bruges! And the beer at the end was of course nice. It was nice being in a place with such a long history in Bruges. It's definitely a must visit, I just wish our tour guide was a little more energetic! It's a known fact that the roof view here is a better deal than the bell tower because you get beer here too. It's also a cool old brewery. Founded 1856. The tour itself was rather typical. What are the ingredients in beer, you ask? Gosh I don't know. What is this mash tun thing? Okay I'm done. A pour of their blonde comes with the tour. Despite the size of the group, bartenders were on it and quickly provided the pours. I'm glad it wasn't their quad. I recognized the name right away when I stepped into the brewery -- it's one of my lowest-rated drain pours on Untappd. Yikes. So basically, go for the view. Imagine having a brewery tour led by Glee's Coach Beiste. Now imagine that tour with a heavily Dutch-influenced accent, and re-proportion your guide's body mass away from muscle and toward lipids. You've pretty much just experienced what we did at the Half Moon Brewery. I think my favourite quotes throughout the tour were... - 'Beer without alcohol... Very sad. We call that... disaster.' - 'There is a door that is very low. Don't hit your head. Please be careful. Don't damage... the building.' For the measly cost of €6, you're granted a hefty showing of the historical premises upon which some of the most delightful beer I've had the pleasure of imbibing came from. The brewery itself is quite substantial in size, and we had the opportunity to explore everything from the ground-level courtyard to the roof of the building. The latter offers a pretty impressive view over much of Brugge, although you'll find an even more stunning vantage point from atop the Brugge Belfort. Plus, with your tour admission, you're offered a pint of refreshing Brugse Zot to be enjoyed after your exertions. Though pleasant, I'm still partial to the incredible Straffe Hendrik Tripel (though I wouldn't turn down their Quadrupel). Be sure to arrive relatively early on in the day to nab your tickets as tours do sell out. They're also limited by language - we attended one led in English, and there was another immediately behind us that was in Dutch (I think). This being the only brewery in Brugge proper, it's quite popular, and for good reason. I'm grateful to have personally been to the origins of one of my favourite beer brands in the world! read more

This is a decent place to spend a couple hours in Bruges for casual beer fans. We did the brewery tour, which took about an hour and covered the typical stuff (this is hops, here are the steps of the process) although the building and the history were interesting. The tour guide just seemed like he didn't want to be there. They do give it in good English. I personally got bored halfway through. It was extremely hot throughout the building, and it wasn't even that warm of a day out-- shudder to think of what this would be like in mid-summer. There's a heavy amount of steep steps to climb up and down. The view from the roof is awesome though. The tour comes with a pour of the blond beer, which is fairly average but refreshing. They're well-practiced at pouring them out for the tour groups rolling off. Overall, this is a good spot if you want to say you've done a brewery tour, but I could've skipped it. read more

And if you are not really a drinker or still having a hangover from the night before, you can always have a cup of tea, pop or a wake me up coffee! The tour itself was a little different from the other tours I have been to since it concentrated more on the ancient brewing process and set up. So a little historical background of De Halve Maan which started brewing since 1856 and the city of Brugge itself. If you are not into brewery tour, you can just go straight to the pub and just get few of their beers to drink while you waiting for your friends! Just remember Straffe Hendrik's Tripel ABV 9% and Quadrupel ABV 11% are both deceivingly smooth and go down easy but high in ABV! read more

The beer in Belgium is world renowned. Just like gelato in Italy, I tried as much beer as I could while still maintaining an active sightseeing schedule. In Bruges, there are a few breweries within the confines of the city proper. De Halve Maan is the oldest brewery with continuous production since 1856. The name of the brewery bears the same initials as the founder of the brewery, Henri Maes. It is a family-run business that is currently in its 6th generation. The recent generations have made tremendous progress in the brewery's success on an international scale. - Henri IV and his daughter Véronique Maes developed the Straffe Hendrik, a Belgian triple. The beer was named for the previous "strong Henris" that previously owned and operated the brewery. The line was sold to another brewery before the current owner bought it back. - The current owner is Xavier Vanneste. He was responsible for two things: the establishment of "Brugse Zot" (Bruges Joker), the only beer to be brewed directly inside the city and the creation of a 3.2km beer pipeline under the city to its bottling plant just outside the city. Brugse Zot, named after the nickname of the people of Bruges, is the beer that gave the brewery international recognition. The second achievement is considered the first beer pipeline in the world, alleviating the need for more trucks that could potentially damage the historical city streets while passing beer from the brewing to bottling sites. TOURS Keep in mind that this is the only working brewery in the city that offers public tours. Being a brewery they warn you about the 220 steep stairs. There is no way around this. Tours are held daily in 3 different languages: Dutch, French and English. The general tour is €11, departs on the hour and includes a glass of Brugse Zot at the end. A once-daily tour, the XL tour, departs at 14:15 and lasts 90 minutes. For €21, one of the brewers will also conduct a professional tasting experience introducing you to 3-4 of their beers. This beer tasting will be done in the cellars. EXPERIENCE Two people were involved when I did the XL Tour on 8/16: Mary conducted the English guided tour while Frank (who conducted the Dutch tour) did the tasting (luckily he also did this in English). - While Mary did a good job presenting information about the beermaking process, being from SD the tour is given at a novice level. However there are noteworthy stops on the tour itself: you can take a glimpse at the beermaking tanks as to what is being done to the wort and you can peek into what was once the fermentation tanks and where cooperage was performed. Being a sucker of a view the most impressive part of the tour was the rooftop view of Bruges; it provides a more clear view of the city than the top of the Belfort! - At the cellar Frank poured off 4 beers: Brugse Zot, Brugse Zot dubbel as well as smaller pours of the Straffe Hendrik tripel and quadrupel. Considering that this is Belgium, the Brugse Zots and the Straffe Hendriks each have their own glasses. Belgian beers are no joke, while they are tasty the high ABV in even Brugse Zot was enough to get me tipsy on one drink! It is here that I got my first real lecture on Belgian beer styles. While Brugse Zot is average, this is where I first tried an actual Belgian dubbel, tripel and quadrupel beer. Turns out that I am a fond of a dubbel and especially fond of quads, evenmoreso when you pair a quad and a chocolate. Someone brought chocolate when Frank poured the quadrupel and the paring worked out beautifully. Because of this I have consumed subsequent quads with chocolate as a nightcap and the tradition continues to this day. While Brugse Zot the beer is nothing special, I still recommend taking a tour at De Halve Maan should you ever be in Bruges. While good for beer aficionados, it's also an interesting activity that's different from visiting one of the many churches or museums all around Europe. read more

A gem of a brewery tour and some pretty fine beer too. The food isn't bad, but it's not the reason for coming. This place is packed on weekend evenings. The tours are busy too. I've been to quite a few brewery tours, in a number of countries, but never have I had a guide with so much gusto. There is no way American insurance companies would let a business get away with the low doors and steep staircases. It's much better this way. There is a lot of history they can't remove because it's so historical. The beer is very good. The food, not bad. Sitting in the courtyard with a beer and people watching is a good way to spend a little time. No single item here is 5 star except the tour, but the whole package is still a can't miss when you are in Brugge. read more

I only had one must-do when I was in Bruges, and it was to visit Halve Maan. I watched a news story about how they were building a pipeline to bring beer to the brewery because trucks could no longer fit the narrow streets. That's how dedicated that are to their craft. There are actually two distinct spaces here if you're not doing tours. There's the outdoor garden with draft beers, and then the nice, air conditioned restaurant upstairs. That's also where the bathrooms are, and you can take a peak at the tuns and whatnot. I mostly sat in the courtyard, but had to move because some old dude decided to sit down right next to me and smoke a cigar. read more

Belgium is famous for their beer, so I had to go on a brewery tour. When you go Brugge, this is a popular one that has tours like every half hour. When I arrived, the noon tour had already filled up, so I had to wait for the 12:30 one. I think it was ten euros and it includes a glass of their flagship beer, the Brugse Zot at the end of the tour! The tour went through the brewery and the guide talked about the beer making process and also the history of beer in Brugge and about Henri Maes and his family that still run the brewery today. She told us that the brewery used to deliver beer in these cute little cars. And the brewery is known for it's underground beer pipeline, which delivers beer made from the brewery to their bottling facility, so they don't have to deal with trucking the beer and driving on cobblestone streets. The tour also takes you outside to get a nice view of the city. At the end of the tour, you go the bar and get your glass of beer, which is really good - it's a smooth blonde beer. They have outdoor seating, but it was kind of cold, so we drank ours inside of the brewery's restaurant, upstairs in this room that had lots of deer heads mounted on the wall. After the beer, I was starving and the brewery also has a restaurant, so I ordered the stoverij (carbonades flamande) which is this Flemish beer stew, and they cook it with the the Brugse Zot dubbel, which is a dark beer. The beef stew was hearty and the meat was very tender. And it comes with fries! The stew is kind of salty, so you definitely want to drink it water...or maybe more beer! This brewery saved my dad on our walking tour through Brugge. I'm sure visiting shop after shop of crochet and lace was taking a toll so when we stumbled upon Half Moon Brewery he was elated. We took the tour and climbed all the way to the top and then went in and did a tasting. Definitely do it in that order. Those stairs can be tricky on the tour. I did the brewery tour years back and it's great. The beers they brew - Brugse Zot, and Straffe Hendrick - are very good. We had lunch in the restaurant fairly late in the day. It's a little spendier than you'd expect, but they did have a reasonably priced menu of the day, but it was pasta, we weren't in the mood... A definite must do on any visit to Bruges. Our tour guide was wonderful, as well as the customary 'how beer is made' portion of any brewery tour, she was incredibly insightful and well informed about the history of the DeHalve Mann brewery and the family that run it, sharing with the group many interesting facts and snippets of information that made the experience that much more unique and personable. A very funny and interesting lady who is clearly very passionate about the company she works for and the beer they make, but also about the town of Bruges itself, regaling us with stories of the towns architecture and which of the plentiful chocolate shops were worth parting with your money in. Having visited a few breweries across Europe I was incredibly impressed by how inexpensive it is, a mere 6.50 Euros for a guided tour, sky line view of the town and complimentary glass of their blonde zot in their bar at the end. A steal for an insightful and humorous tour of an uncommercialised, delightful brewery. Be warned the steps are steep, the ceilings low and under no circumstance should you attempt to trade your beer token for a soft drink. read more

We visited this brewery while visiting Brugge in April. We couldn't visit Belgium and not go see a brewery! We arrived in the late afternoon and were able to purchase tickets for the last English tour of the day. We waited in the shop until our tour started, and were then led into the brewery by our tour guide, who happened to originally be from the US. The tour was very reasonably priced and includes a beer from the brewery at the end of the tour. The beer was delicious and we enjoyed it outside in the courtyard. You can also sit indoor at the restaurant which serves lunch for a few hours in the afternoon. The brewery itself was incredible. It was interesting to learn about the history of the brewery as well as the actual beer-making process. Due to the age of the brewery, there were a lot of narrow halls and steep staircases that we had to navigate during the tour, but that made it pretty fun and gave you a lot of insight into the lives of the brewery workers back in the day. They recently installed a new modern system for brewing, but it's nice to see that the old machinery has been kept in tact to preserve the brewery's history. Even the farthest reaches has something local and tasty. I did two separate stints in Brugge and concentrated more on the food. However De Halve Maan's Straffe Hendrik Tripel is of noteworthiness. Pure clean, slightly bitter. Great with food. You don't have to do the touristy tour to enjoy the goods. Go hang in the courtyard or one of their dining rooms with a brew. It's cool to be able to enjoy what is the only beer brewed within the old town. read more
