I was so excited to revisit Hula, knowing that they were an oasis of healthy eating options, but both the quantity and quality have changed over the years. The service is a little less friendly. The space feels a little less inviting. Maybe the blame is on me: they now seem to prioritize reservations and I wasn't expecting that because they didn't used to (and, according to their website, the Grassmarket is supposed to be for walk-ins only, but when we arrived the first question they asked was whether we had a reservation - confusing, right?). I also ordered the same thing as I did the first time: avocado toast, an iced Americano, and a Sunshine In A Cup smoothie. All three were de-saturated versions of what I first experienced (and I have photos from then and now to compare, so I know it's not just in my memory): the avocado toast was a smaller, flimsier piece of bread topped with a much thinner spread of avocado; the iced Americano was more water than espresso; the smoothie was mostly orange juice (when it's supposed to be frozen mango, peach, pineapple, and orange juice blended). Hula used to have delicious sweets/desserts too (like wedges of vegan Snickers pie), but it seems they've done away with that. Or, maybe they haven't. Maybe I came on an off day. But this definitely wasn't the place I remembered loving. I'll come back the next time I'm in Edinburgh, but I'll probably opt for Click & Collect, and I'll definitely order something completely different.
After traveling around the UK for weeks, your stomach is likely to be feeling heavy from all of the chips, steak pies, fried fish, and beer. I was thrilled to find this fresh breakfast spot that offered tons of healthy, light, and pure options. It hit the spot so much so that we came back two days in a row. The avocado toast is the best I've ever had. There was a tomato compote on the base, then avocado, then some great seasoning. You can choose to add a protein on top or on the side. The juices and smoothies were delicious too and I loved that you could top them off with a supplement as well. The cafe interior is tropical and beautiful, and was filled with students from the university. Our servers were nice and quick as well. A total gem!
My wife had decent oatmeal and blueberries with honey with a side of poached eggs with hard and small toast. They didn't have decaf coffee for her and the decaf "Americano" (with espresso) was bitter. I had poached eggs Benedict (because there were no omelettes on the menu), which came with fatty bacon, button mushrooms and hollandaise sauce, and was otherwise enjoyable, but the toast, like my wife's, seemed edible but stale. My latte was okay, but Starbucks makes them much better. Nice ambience and helpful service. I'd go back to try their banana pancakes and something fruity. We got one of the last deuces inside and, when we were done, even the outdoor tables were all taken. It's a relatively small restaurant.
A colleague and I came here for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. The space is super cute with a tropical vibe from the palm leave decors and coconut cups. This is a very healthy spot, especially amongst all the heavy food you will find in Scotland. I was a bit excited to finally have something healthier to eat as I settled for the regular Poke Bowl (£7.95) with added Avo Mash (£2.95). Unfortunately, the poke bowl was not that great in taste nor value. It came with two slices of salmon over a bed of grainy white rice that did not seem cooked thoroughly at all. The bowl also only contained a few pieces of kale, cucumber slices, and radishes. Thankfully I added the avocado mash or else the bowl would've been even more sad. I did like the chunkiness of the avocado mash topped with spices for good texture and flavor, which was the only good part of the entire bowl. It was not the most satisfying meal, especially with the uncooked and soggy rice. Maybe better luck with the other dishes. Note: 10% off with Yelp check-in though!
Perfect hangover food if you believe in detox-redox. My poke bowl had top grade Scottish smoked salmon. His chicken pesto arugula wrap was very tasty. The carrot soup and ginger jack juice were full of nutrition. And our food arrived 5 minutes after we ordered it, so we don't delay our visit to the Castle. Good choice!
Hula was the perfect little breakfast spot in Edinburgh. We wanted a quick breakfast and a smoothie, so we came here. I tried the porridge (needed more honey) but the cinnamon was good. I asked for more though because after eating half, it was getting bland. My boyfriend got the salmon open face sandwich. It had a lot of ingredients on it and it seemed full of flavor. Price was reasonable for the quality of dish I though. The green smoothie I got was delicious. Ambiance was so cute too. Jungle themed in there with cute coconuts for silverware on the tables. I loved it. I definitely recommend if you are visiting Edinburgh and want a breakfast that won't disappoint!
This was a cute spot my friend and I hit twice within our 3 day stay in Edinburgh. The ambiance was great and the place seemed clean enough. It is lively and will get busy very quickly! Note that they have extra seating in the back. We tried the avocado toast, several smoothies, and the acai bowl. The bowl was kind of small and our smoothies weren't as cold as I would have liked, but they were okay. The avocado toast was yummy - the chili/tomato paste they use as a base was a much-needed addition. I wish they would use more of it. They give a very generous amount of avocado. The second time it was almost an unreasonable amount of avocado for the size of the toasts . Perhaps order an extra piece of toast if you want an easier time eating it. The only thing I wish the avo toast featured was a unique garnish that would zest it up. Maybe some spicy pickled onions or some lime.
Small cafe in Grassmarket - quaint, super friendly and healthy. The avocado toast with feta and just that dash of balsamic hit the spot for breakfast my first morning in Edinburgh. We were out before the crowds so the cafe was busy but not overwhelmed. The right amount of avocado to be filling and feta just added that touch of salt without making it too salty. I love a good balsamic w/my avocado toast and love even more when I don't need to ask for it. The Betty Ford was delicious. A bright spot in what was starting out as a dreary day. Fresh fruit with the brightness of the citrus, nothing added to enhance the flavors letting the fruit stand out w/no annoying smoothie base. The only thing to note is that they will split the check at the register but are not keen on it. Overall, def would make this a regular stop as part of my Edinburgh eating locales read more

We ate here everyday in Edinburgh. The lattes are amazing, the smoothies and juices were delicious, but the hot dish were even better. The service was so sweet, the place was always packed, just be prepared to wait for your order and to pay your bill. read more

Very good food, super busy on Saturday's but was expected. Our table seemed to be shoved into the entry way and was a little crowded with people going in and out. read more

It was my first vegan place I visited in EDI. The service was great. For some people can be new that service is seating you. You can pay by card (no Apple Pay). I didn't wait for seat but I saw that some people were waiting for free seats for couple of minutes. I had Cinnamon Latte, ginger tea and Açaí Bowl. Latte was made from coconut milk and was delisious! Açaí bowl was perfect (recommend for warmer days, it is really cold). Prices are normal from my point of view for UK. Highly recommend! read more

i loved the atmosphere!! i had very good açaí and my best-friend loved her avocado toast. we both had delicious iced lattes and our server was so nice!! definitely will come back next time i'm in edinburgh!! read more

The new refurbishment is lovely! More importantly the food honestly keeps getting better, and things like the the coconut bowls are such lovely touches. The raw, vegan & gluten free cakes are so consistently delicious, and easy on the conscience. Even my friend who doesn't normally eat at more health based cafes was sceptical but loved the granary toast. The only thing I personally would like is more of a cross over time between breakfast and lunch options, or even all day breakfast options! Though, that's probably a logistical nightmare, so understand the lack of avo toast in afternoons! It's lovely to see Hula so busy all the time, seems to be super popular and rightly so! read more
Hula has been a go-to spot for me in Edinburgh for ages now and I'm very ashamed to see I never reviewed it. Until now! Hula is such a lovely place and with their recent refurb, it really is an oasis - lush, green, tropical and bright - it's very welcoming and relaxing. We grabbed a seat out the back (this area didn't used to be there, did it?) and were pleased to see they have table service. I had a mint tea (properly brewed with actual mint leaves) and a piece of carrot cake which was just divine. While the wifi out the back isn't amazing, I didn't let that spoil my visit. I can't wait to come back to properly try out the food! Note: they have customer loos and lots of seating, but it does get really busy as the place is very popular! read more

Managed to nab a seat during lunchtime rush on a busy Saturday in the city. Although small the cafe has a nice amount of seating and doesn't feel too crowded even when full which is nice. Myself and my lunch date were both feeling something light so opted for salads: the watermelon olive and feta for myself and fig and prosciutto for my mum. These we accompanied with a Popeyes and oscars smoothie respectively. The juices came quickly and were both delicious, light and nutritious. The salads soon followed and lived up to expectations. The watermelon salad was bursting with fresh juicy watermelon, balanced with salty feta and topped with a sweet dressing and seed mix. While the smoothies were expensive at 4 pounds for a regular size you can't really expect anything else for fresh juice? I would recommend Hula for anyone looking for a light fresh lunch and intend on coming back ASAP to sample the extensive breakfast menu! read more
Hula is one of those spots I frequent after i've been binge eating junk food. It's literally impossible not to feel healthy here - from the quirky patio furniture to the tea towels on the walls and astroturf at the front, you basically lose three pounds just walking in the door* (*results may vary). I frequent this place most when i'm feeling a wee bit homesick. It's a little snippet of my yoga crazy, green juice chugging, home town tucked away in the Grassmarket. Like most brilliant health conscious places - they make you feel good about eating cream cheese. I'm serious, you will feel like a million bucks for choosing that smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel. Is it the healthiest thing on the menu? Heck no. But you're also having a peppermint tea and a green juice, so that cancels out any harm caused by your full fat dairy indulgence: science. This theory works with most of their menu. Delicious, healthy options with a heck ton of cheese - often melted. God bless you Hula. Don't get me wrong, if you want to go the true blue health route, it has you covered as well. From heart healthy salads to house made soup - you can find a decent meal here with or without cheese cheating. Bonus points for gluten free options. It also boasts the best juice selection i've found thus far in Edinburgh and *drum roll please* - they carry green juice! Add a scoop of frozen yogurt and have a double lunch! Hula will continue to be my go-to when I want to feel hip, healthy and/or need a quirky spot to host a lunch meeting. My only complaint? I wish they had better wifi. This gal needs to internet gush 24/7. read more

I was quite impressed with this place - even though at first I thought 'oh no, it's cramped and full of tourists' - not seeing the large room to the back with loads of space to chillax! But we were actually looking to work on our laptops so chillaxing wasn't the number 1 agenda item and with on and off wifi it was very much perfect for the heavy brainstorming we had in mind as opposed to internet heavy donkey work! Great selection of cakes (the carrot and caramel brownie were great) and coffee was tasty. I didn't venture into juice land but seemed pretty good in terms of selection. Good stuff! read more

Hula is the perfect place to eat if you're trying to be healthy. It's casual and friendly so great for a catch up. They do a great selection of juices and smoothies. I especially like the hot juices, they give you the warmth of a coffee with out the caffeine. If you're looking for a boost then the hot apple pie has ginger and cinnamon so will keep you going through the afternoon. They have a variable selection of cakes, some days they run out by late afternoon so check on the way in. The wifi is also free and a good speed so it's a good location to work from too. read more
My husband and I came here for breakfast while on holiday in Edinburgh. We ordered a smoothie, caffe latte, porridge with cinnamon, and fruit bowl (yogurt. Granola, and fruit), all of which was extremely delicious, and came to about £15. It has a comfortable seating area with a cool artist atmosphere, and the employees were all very friendly and efficient as well. Would recommend for anyone looking for a delicious, healthy stop a few minutes from the Castle. read more
