The systems and procedures of adoption are faulty, causing potential adopters not to be treated with good faith resulting in disrespect and distress. My daughter and I dutifully adhered to their system, and booked an appointment to adopt a specific pet, but the time lapse between the appointment and our request meant that the pet got adopted out from under us. This would be understandable if it was others with appointments who ended up adopting, but from my previous experience, it could just as easily be a walk in who just decided to "wait for an available counselor". While that was disappointing, we understood and came in early to look at the pets, to pick out another pet, and fortunately we found a couple, with one that my daughter really liked and wanted to adopt. However, the adoption counselor was NOT prepared and very disorganized. Rather than listening to us and ensuring the enclosures of the animals we were interested in were marked as potentially adopted, the counselor took up a great deal of time on irrelevant details, in the office. Despite our noting that we wanted an adult animal, they tried to get us to adopt specific young animals (under a year). They then took an immense amount of time on irrelevant details, such as the specifics as to how the pets had recovered from surgery months ago, confusing current potential health issues with those that had been resolved, rather than taking us to visit the animals themselves. In fact, they took so long telling us irrelevant details about the pets that by the time we were able to go out to see them, the one my daughter had stated she really wanted was again adopted out from under her. This didn't need to happen. If the counselor had immediately taken us to see the animals we were interested in, and given us the specifics of the animals as we were with the particular pet, my daughter could have had the opportunity to indicate the pet she wanted, and been able to adopt it. Something as simple as marking the enclosure of the pets as potentially adopted would have given my daughter a fair chance of adopting the pet she wanted. Instead of having a fair chance to adopt, our adherence to their procedures caused us to be treated with disrespect, and caused distress. read more

I tried to report vet abuse to this place and i was told twice by HOLLY that the only form of vet abuse would be litrally beating an animal ?! And herein lies the problem. Holly refused to take a complaint about Dr. Katz at Fish Creek Aminal Hospital eventhough he broke the law by keeping my cat all day without following protocol that would allow him to seize my pet. Holly told ne about the protocol. This vet did what he wanted including starting the euthanization process without my knowledge or consent which resulted in my cat Max dying a terrrible inhumane death .. choking - gasping for air - looking terrified - eyes bukging out.. He even kept his body afterwards trying to force me to cremate THERE My cat had issues but he was not ready to die .. it was my right to make decisions. I am not afraid to euthanize if its time and I have done so several times before as Ive had pets my whole life. This vet was inhumane and the HUMANE society does not care. They also dont care that Fish Creek uses bully tactics including threatening to call the Humane Society when they know its unwarranted. Fish creek misdiagnosed when I went there the first time telling me he had blood on his chest when he did NOT and they wanted me to out him down then. I never imagined a vet would just kills someones pet on purpose??!! My cat was VERY well cared for by ME and I had no say in anything .. why ? No idea... read more

If you are considering adopting a dog from CHS be aware that shelters are known to conceal a dog's aggressive behaviour in sweet, flowery write-ups that do not accurately describe the behavior of the dog. A CHS dog was recently advertised: Cannot go to off leash parks, not good with other dogs, no children, owner must manage the dog's "space", cannot be around other dogs, no other small animals in the home. I won't adopt from the Calgary Humane Society because of the treatment we received from one of the workers. Let's call her Barbissa for this review. My fiancee and I were looking to take two cats or kittens home to their new paradise. We love animals and I've had pets my entire life. Barbissa's first comment to our inquiry was a sarcastic, "Well which is it? Cats or kittens?" Other comments she made include: "Maybe you're not ready for a pet." "You both work so I'm not sure your lifestyle is suited to be a pet owner." "Oh you may be allergic? Like, you don't know?" "Yeah, all of these cats will be gone in 2 weeks so..." After looking at a couple of cats and arranging to adopt with another Cat Agent, I was to go back and get the kitten the next day. I called to ask if my lady could pick up the kitten, Dr Pat Tate, at noon but was told to come between 4-7. I rushed from work and got there for 0630. Same Barbissa! She didn't like that I was rushing to get there because I work and once again suggested that people who work for a living shouldn't own a cat. Then my phone died with my info so she stared. Then she said I had to be there by 630 for an adoption and it was 639. Then she stared at me a bit more and I peed a little bit because of how intimidating she was. "That's not what I was told." I said sheepishly. All I wanted was to take the little fella out of his cage and bring him to his pillow palace. But she sent me away. Maybe Barbissa should work as a border guard. Or maybe Catholic school principal. Maybe a prison guard. Just not a kitten and puppy charity. She was rude. I got the feeling that she didn't want to do the work. I also had the feeling she deals with a lot of idiots so treated us like idiots. The whole process was ridiculous and she made us feel like a bag of crap. We will go elsewhere because from the sounds of it the Humane Society doesn't need our business. read more

Thanks to Yelp reviewers reminding me of this establishment. I got my butt to the Humane Society today - my first visit here. I used to go to our local shelter in Ontario all the time and over the years have rescued 3 cats from certain demise. I have never bought an animal at a pet store - too many upon rescue need care and the shelters are always maxed out with animals. Personal choice I guess. I was pretty impressed with this building. The dogs we went to see first and my heart always breaks when I see them as I want to take many of them home with me! They were in circular pods which was a great design idea and there were many pooches to look at. I saw many of them being taken out to go for their walk. Their pods had blankets and food and lots of toys. Their pictures, names and histories are on the wall beside the dogs' viewing window. The descriptions of the dogs are great - very detailed! I saw a staff member going pod to pod playing with the dogs and petting them. Staff were all so friendly and great at answering any questions! I noted that the average price of a dog was about $500. This includes vaccines, neutering, 6 mos of insurance, first vet visit and obedience classes. I noted that there were a lot of pitbulls there on this date as well as various mixes of dogs and they all ranged in age from 2 mos to 7 years old. I saw that some of the dogs had little 'accidents' in their pod likely due to stress and nerves and not for lack of being taken outside. This building was quite clean. The rabbits - holy! There were a lot of them! They all had their separate areas as did the cats and kittens (super cute!) Birds too! And a 7 foot boa that was hiding so we could not see him and that was ok! I got some dry and wet cat food from the little store inside there - all proceeds I was told go right back into the Humane Society so I was happy to be able to do that. I always give when I see a fundraiser going on for the shelter especially around X-mas-time and I was really happy to see where the money goes.If I win the lotto, I would write a big cheque immediately to this organization. My only comment was that no one for the whole time we were there was at reception, so we just guided ourselves through. I must have gone around to see the dogs and cats 6 times. I want to put a personal shout out to the Calgary Humane Society, I was dealing with them today about some animal issues and although they are on overload they are so willing to take an animal in. This however should be the last resort after all options have been looked at as stated by them. They are willing to look and try to foster out an animal for 21 days but after that period of time, there are no promises that the animal will not be put down. Unlike Meow which is a no kill organization, the CHS only have so many kennels and not only do they deal with cats but they also deal with dogs as well, so you can imagine their responsibilities. They have a great wish list folks so please check their website and see where you can help out, not only can you help with monetary donations but you can also help with basic things like blankets or garbage bags just to give an example. They have a surrender, adoption, spading and neutering information and any basic education that you need supporting taking good care of your pets. read more

An update on my Joey it's very hard for me to explain still takes me to hold back the tears and a large very large lump in the back of my throat my Joey is at the VCA Pet Hospital emergency downtown we took him there because he really needed emergency help we have not been able to find out whether he's dead or alive if you made it they forced me literally forced me to sign a paper over to the mainland Society to surrender him because I could not afford the vet bill they didn't ask me to start doing anything they wouldn't tell me what was going on they wouldn't tell me anything and I feel so so just mad that my baby is gone I've had him since he was five weeks old me and him have a bottom like the weather my PTSD it's killing me right now and it's gotten worse with him being gone my depression is gotten ten times worse and it's not good they took a part of me that day and it's not fair because they basically told me either they kill him or I signed him over to the Humane Society cuz I couldn't pay $2,000 on a deposit I need help getting my baby back I need to come up with the money for his that bill which is $14,000 to get my baby back he's more than just a dog's me everyone he's my child and my piece of me is gone and I even have his baby book I was going to share the link here if you don't believe me how close we are to check it out right from when he was a little boy he's been a piece of me and a piece of my heart and if I don't get him back my depression is starting to feel like it's it's eating me alive he was my emotional support dog I have bad PTSD and I need The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the shelter offers classes to help you better train you animals. The facility is clean and the animals are well cared for. They also have private rooms for you to visit with your new pet one on one before you adopt them. In comparison to other shelters in Calgary you will get the healthiest pets from the Calgary Humane Society. The Calgary Humane Society is an amazing organization with an awesome group of people behind it. We went there to adopt our second rabbit and the people there could not have been better. We went in there not really knowing what to expect and were pleasantly surprised by it all. The people were incredibly helpful, informative, and kind. You could tell they really care about all the little critters there. They let us go into a room and brought us a few different rabbits (one at a time) for us to meet so we could find the one that really fit with us. They even offered to let us bring in our current rabbit to meet the rabbits there (like a play date) and see which one he got along with best. We found the perfect bunny and the two have been best friends ever since. She is a wonderful addition to our home. The Humane Society had already given her a full check-up and fixed her (as they do with all the animals) so we didn't have to go through the stress of taking her in for surgery. We also got a voucher for a free check-up at a bunny friendly vet after we took her home. She is a little shy, but perfect. It is hard to go there and see all the animals in need of help, stuck in a small place without a loving family to take care of them, but they are in good hands with the fine folks there. If you are at all thinking of adopting any sort of furry or not so furry friend, please look into this place. It is worth the trip. read more

The Calgary Humane Society is a dedicated organization to protecting the welfare of animals within the city's jurisdiction. Being fairly informed about the Calgary Humane Society and its principles, I would like to write this review moreso to provide some important info to the general public: -Do call the Calgary Humane Society, if you witness an act of animal cruelty. This could include an animal being abused, neglected (food/water/shelter), unethical breeders, abandoned, or otherwise. If you see a dog in a hot car, this could be addressed by either the Humane Society, or the Calgary Police Service. If you do so, I advise you gather as much information as possible; address of the property, names and contact info, vehicle and license plate number if relevant, etc. If something falls out of city limits in Alberta, call the ASPCA. Do not call the Calgary Humane Society for barking complaints. This is a bylaw issue with the City of Calgary (3-1-1) -Do visit the Calgary Humane Society if you are choosing to adopt an animal. While some of you may take a look at the adoption fees and feel uneasy, keep in mind that these fees include the spay/neuter process (which is extremely pricey on its own), their first set of shots, tattoo/microchip, city license, and a vet visit to the clinic of your choice. For puppies, it also includes pup obedience classes. Additionally, many of these animals have come from compromising situations or been abandoned by their previous owners because they didn't match the new furniture. These animals would really appreciate your love and a new home. Consider adopting an adult dog even if you were hoping for a new puppy- they need homes too, and it is way better than supporting a skeezy breeder. -I don't know where Dinah G. got the info of "21 days," but the Humane Society does not really have set dates of how long they try to "foster an animal out." Also, there is a difference between fostering an animal and adopting an animal. The Humane Society has a great fostering program you can volunteer for, where you would take an animal into your home (ie- a pregnant animal who may be stressed out by a shelter environment, animals who may need socialization, a cat with urv who needs to be isolated, etc) and care for it until it is ready to come back to the shelter. To adopt out, is to adopt an animal permanently and give it a forever home. Keep this in mind. -As the Humane Society is unfortunately not a no-kill shelter, please educate yourselves and really think before you choose to surrender an animal. While they have an open door policy, they always have hundreds of animals to care for and adopt. When you bring an animal into your home, you are bringing it into your family. Would you move into an "adults only" building if you had a child, and just give it up? No. So why would you do this to your pet? If you can't fathom the idea of bringing your animal to a shelter, and the possibility of it being euthanized if it is not adoptable, then you should consult every possible option before electing to surrender it to an animal shelter. -You can send your kids to the Calgary Humane Society for summer camps, birthday parties, and education problems so that they can learn to better understand and respect animals. In a perfect world, there would be no such thing as animal shelters as all. People would be responsible pet owners, spaying and neutering their pets. They would not go to Petland and adopt an animal that has come from a disgusting puppy mill, or pay thousands for a certain breed from an unethical breeder and then refuse to have it fixed. They would not abandon their animals as if they were disposable or unimportant. In the mean time, until everyone smartens up, thank goodness we have resources like the Humane Society, MEOW, AARCS, ARF, and Pound Rescue in the city. read more

Call Centre Individual did not appear very Human, let alone Humane! Extremely poor representative of the organization . . . I hope I'd heard through the grapevine that a Giant Chinchilla rabbit (with a tumour) and her three babies were surrendered to the SPCA. I checked online and saw nothing. I called and asked if the doe and babies had been euthanized. The babies should have been old enough to be weaned. I was haughtily told that they also might be being fostered. I asked if I could find out if they were anywhere in the system, or if they had been euthanized. If they were still alive, I would definitely be interested in fostering. She responded in an even more rude fashion and told me I would have to apply to be a foster! I asked again if I could confirm if they were still in the system. She claimed she 'couldn't' answer my question. So, in this technological age, I am to believe that the animals aren't in a database. Where is the HUMANE in Calgary Humane Society? I'm curious how many animals are euthanized because people give up after front office staff members are so discouraging/rude. I want to believe the staff members in the back actually care about the animals. I would also hope those dealing directly with the public are compassionate as well. It's at least one call centre staff member who needs to be 'adjusted'. I have since found out that the person decided to address the babies' situation in another fashion - thank God. Responses to negative Google reviews are simple copy/paste responses: "Sorry to hear about your experience. Please let us know what we can do to improve. We encourage you to call us at 403-205-443." Reviewers have told you what's wrong. You need us to tell you how to improve? Surely your management has the skillset to figure out how to adjust the attitude of your staff. What kind of management scolds their staff in front of customers? I paid for dog training and have to listen to some grouchy middle aged woman yell at staff before classes began. Maybe if you stopped hiring 18 year olds and didn't pay minimum wage you would have better employees. Very unprofessional. Also heard staff gossiping about each other. Shouldn't people who work at an animal rescue centre be nice? The training didn't teach my dog anything and they just try to sell you stuff in their overpriced shop. I went here and it seemed nice. I was considering adopting a dog and they let us play with him even though we didn't get him. However, I noticed that almost all the biographies are glowing, which surely isn't possible. I think they are hiding things and thee is a risk that the animal isn't really "spunky" but rather dislikes people. Plus the reviews on Google Plus are horrible. My fiancé and I adopted a 10yr old border collie from CHS. They were fantastic throughout the entire ordeal. They provided our dog with $2500 in dental work before we got her. They even took her in for surgery after our adoption (at no cost to us) when a lump appeared on her leg. I HIGHLY recommend this great place. Horrifying!! I went with my bf to adopt two cats. We found a beautiful pair of cats named Sheldon and Leonard. We got to spend time with them, they were friendly and cuddly. We made the decision to adopt them and they recommended getting a Feline Leukemia test because the shelter they had previously had an outbreak. We agreed, and it turned out Sheldon was positive, and after all this, we were told Sheldon could not be adopted out and would be euthanized. Leonard's test was negative, but it was a chance it could be dormant so he could be euthanized too. They could have saved us the trouble by having the test done before putting them up for adoption. Yes, that costs money, but they could find ways to cover it - donation drives, raising adoption fees to cover the overall cost - this whole ordeal was absolutely unnecessary and avoidable. We got our money back for everything and won't be going back when we're again ready to adopt. read more

WORST EXPERIENCE!!! Their website said they were open and when I got their to look for my lost cat..the second door into the lost and found was locked.. On the door it said they were open from 12pm-7pm, I got their at 12:45 and waiting an hour. Three other people showed up confused why the whole building was close also saying they had bad experience at this place before. I have repeatedly call their main line and the lost and found line to find that know one ever answers? what's the point of a phone??? I used to think really highly of this place. I've adopted in the past. I donate money when I can. My family also donates when they can. I went in with a kitten with no shots or anything from a home where it wasn't wanted. They told me the kitten is mine and is basically my problem. I could of lied and said the kitten was a stray but I didn't. I'm honest. The lady was incredibly rude to me. Have fun in your power trip! I couldn't take the cat home cause of my 2 cats. I can't risk them getting sick. I left and I found the kitten a home after hours of anxiously searching. Extremely unprofessional and would not recommend again. read more

I've been to the Calgary Humane Society and have adopted 3 cats over the years. Our last visit there on the weekend was very disappointing. We went Saturday afternoon only to find their computer system down. The three staff members weren't very helpful since the system was down and during our time there were busy chatting with each other. It would have been appreciated if someone would have suggested that we take the paperwork home with us to prepare for the visit on Sunday. We were unable to visit with any of the cats but we received a phone call at the end of the day stating that the system just came up but they were closed. She providing some information over the phone on one of the cats so we stated that we will go Sunday morning at opening to spend time with the cats. We arrived at 10:00 AM on Sunday and spent about an hour with one of the 2 cats. The woman that was entering our data seemed rather arrogant during our time with her. When I made a comment about the cat being a long hair, she stated no, she was a medium hair. I've been around cats long enough to know the difference. As well, the card on the kennel stated long hair. We found it very difficult to find someone to help us view the second cat. We were ushered to the waiting area and told to wait. No explanation about what was going on. Because we had a function to attend that afternoon, we were running short on time. After standing in a long line up again, this woman told us that we would have to put a non refundable deposit of 40.00 on the first cat. This is a procedure we never had to do before. When we discussed it and went back to that woman she said that someone else was going to look at the cat and we couldn't put the deposit down. Long story short was that I've never been so poorly treated here before. There was such a lack of communication and new procedures and fees popping up without us being told that we ended up walking out, leaving a beautiful kitty behind. I'm not sure what the issue was but I would suggest that this woman requires further training. Perhaps their staffing levels should have been addressed especially when the system was down the day before as the place was chaotic and unorganized. I will not step through those doors again. I'll utilize one of the many other wonderful organizations out there. read more

I adopted a whippet cross from the Calgary Humane Society (CHS) a year ago. This was my very first dog and my very first pet! During the interview process, we indicated that we wanted a certain dog, but the staff member warned us that this dog would not be suitable for a first-time dog owner and that this dog showed signs of guarding and would need a lot of training. My heart sank. However, as luck would have it, we saw a 4 month whippet cross that was available - she was friendly and well behaved. A year later, I am still a happy dog owner. I found the interview process at the CHS was valuable and that the staff were very honest. I was amazed at how clean the facility was - no smell of urine, clean floors, blankets for dogs, etc. I would definitely adopt at CHS again. read more

As a newbie Foster Parent (January 2016), I have had the wonderful fulfilling experience with the Calgary Humane society and its staff. The staff are very caring, informative and helpful with all my questions and concerns. We have loved and nurtured every cat and kitten under our care, and look forward to helping other kitties in the future. I am in sync with their policies procedures and total outlook on all animals in their care. Feeling proud that I can be a part of this wonderful establishment and their policies and friendliness. They have been upfront with me on many issues, which I appreciate very much. For anyone out there who does not appreciate what they do and stand for, should give their heads a shake. I've been holding this in for at least eighteen months. My cat was in need of help and I was glad to hear the Humane Society had him. The details are long and not relevant. I called to find out how to get him back and was met with hostility and arrogance by the "peace officer" in charge of animal cruelty, Mr. Nichols. He said the animal was theirs after ten days unclaimed and that I had abandoned him. I didn't abandon my 14 year old cat, he was my child. Mr. Nichols would not let me explain what had happened and all my pleading fell on deaf ears. My cat was in a cage, in pain, frightened and no doubt wondering where I was for three weeks before they killed him. He was cremated and used as fertilizer for some farmer's field. I live every day now heartbroken and grieving. I never got to see him again and didn't have the chance to even get his ashes back. I was going to have him buried with me when the time came. This is a vicious way to treat someone. I got him from the pound in the first place, but no one gave me a chance to explain what had happened to force me away from my home and cat. I'm putting this on file to wake up all those people who think the Humane Society is so wonderful with all it's animal fun programs and cheery posts. Well, this is the behaviour you don't get to see. We have gone several times to try to adopt a dog from the humane society, but each time we have been told they won't let us adopt because we have young kids. We are so frustrated and done with this organization and how they handle adopting animals. read more
