Truly a home away from home and an enjoyable experience…read more The house is quaint with more amenities then I would ever had expected. My room has an ensuite, and a fully stocked medicine cabinet. You name it was in there from q-tips and toothpaste to feminine products. The room was spacious over looking the back yard (be sure to check out the little pond), plenty of closet and dresser space for those that are staying a bit longer. The kitchen - talk about going above and beyond. Fresh muffins, every preserve you could imagine, a variety of cereals, some fresh fruit, and a few varieties of teas. Even the coffee machine was set up and ready to go at the touch of a button. The house was located on adjacent to the transcanada highway and literally five minutes from the airport ($10 taxi fare). A large beach, with a community trail, is just down the road, Tim Hortons, A & W and more, immediately on the opposite side of the highway along with the town proper. Deer Lake was truly a walkable community with everything from food, convenience and more steps away. Over all, a great experience for this junior traveller.

The outside of the house was covered in spiderwebs and felt like millions of spiders. It looked like a scene of out a horror movie, not even exaggerating. Like someone put a canopy of webs on top of the house. Had to run into the door cause we were afraid the spiders were going to fall on us. If those issues were fixed the place would have been nice. But peeling yourself off your bed in the wee hours of the morning to hit the road cause you can't take it anymore is saying something. I really hope they updated it since. Will never stay in a place without air conditioning again. Lesson learned.

We found the atmosphere to be relaxed and unpretentious - breakfasts were hearty (bacon, eggs, toast, homemade jams), cod cakes and fisherman's brew on the two mornings we stayed there. For the nice accommodations the price was quite low ($65/night). Lucas House is very close to Deer Lake Airport; but it is also about a one hour drive to get into the heart of Gros Morne National Park. Lucas House was a good place to stay for day trips and for travellers passing by the TCH but for longer stays at Gros Morne it would probably be better to pay a bit more to stay inside the park.

In the morning, when we arrived at the Deer Lake airport and rented the car, the very helpful car rental staff girl I asked her where good places to eat in Deer Lake are... And she exclaimed the Irving Big Stop and Deer Lake Motel. We had brekky at the Irving Big Stop. Which was good, not great. They bake their own bread there so there's that... But, then we got back to Deer Lake later that evening around 4-pm. Some time to kill before flight. Went to Deer Lake Motel restaurant. Everything looked good. I saw the poutine. And it looked good. But we didn't want a huge meal either, just something to tide us over. We had the nachos with beef! And yes, they were delish! Not too wetty, wetty or messy, messy. It was simple and clean. And exteme delish. We both commented on how tasty. And cleaned the plate. I think for food-wise, you are GTG here....

Deer Lake Motel was at a very convenient location - right off the Trans Canada Highway, so we didn't have to drive around an unfamiliar town in the dark. Convenience is the one of 2 "pros" that I had for this motel. The other - a large flat screen TV to check out the local weather and national news. Room itself and interior was quite outdated. I found a huge ants on the wall, and we heard rain dripping from the upstairs room hitting our window sill ALL NIGHT LONG.... imagine that. Also, this motel is located right off the major (and only) highway, so naturally it was noisy. Make sure to ask for a room on the backside so that your room is not facing the highway, and upstairs so that you don't need to hear the "waterfall" all night long in case it rained. Overall, 2.5 starts but rounded up to 3 :-) This motel's high point would be the convenience, for a quick and convenient place to stay and sleep for several hours. We paid half of what they charged here and got a better, cleaner room....

What a location. What a view. What nice accommodations!…read more We got to stay in two different rooms here, only because we spent a night at L'Anse aux Meadows in between. Our first three nights were in Room 1, which features a Queen-sized bed and a spacious bath, along with a very comfortable claw-foot tub. Bright and airy, this room was one of my favorites in our 19 days in Canada. After a night away, we spent our final night here in Room 2, which also featured a very comfortable Queen-sized bed, but this room's private bathroom was down the hall. No big deal, as Aunt Jane's will provide you with a plush terry robe for your convenience. Breakfasts here were always entertaining, with fresh fruit and an assortment of muffins and breads... with lots of homemade jams (partridgeberry was my favorite!) coupled with good coffee and a selection of teas, the morning conversations with Brenda or Tanya were always a hoot! If you're visiting Gros Morne NP, please note that Aunt Jane's is in Woody Point, about 1/2 hour off of the main highway - but less than five minutes from the Gros Morne Discovery Center, on the road toward Trout river. From Aunt Jane's, it is about a five-minute drive to the trail head for the Tablelands trail, and another three minutes to the trail head for Green Garden. I recommend them both very highly! Aunt Jane's Place also provides free WiFi, but... do yourself a favor and leave your electronics at home. This place is just too beautiful to spend your time staring at a computer monitor! As our road trip of Newfoundland's Gros Morne National Park unfolded last month, I was researching…read morevarious places to stay in Rocky Harbour (where most people advised us to stay). I came across an article about two people who had put considerable time, sweat and money into restoration of some historical buildings in Woody Point. The article also described how they won an award for significant contribution to tourism in their area, and those two things combined lead me to look into the businesses. We are so glad we did - we only stayed one night but it was a memorable one night out of a whole 2 week visit across Newfoundland. We stayed at Aunt Jane's B&B in Woody Point, and loved it. Roughly 30 mins off the highway (45-60 mins south of Rocky Harbour), a beautiful drive to get to Woody Point, which ended up being very close to hiking trails, the Gros Morne Discovery Centre, and of course, the infamous Tablelands. As you drive into Woody Point, you may not get the best signage, so just turn right when you get to Woody Point to head down to the water front and the main street (or do as we did, and ask someone, who gave us friendly directions to find it). Mid-September, accommodation options were good but I imagine in high season we would have been less lucky without reservations. We signed up for one night at Aunt Jane's B&B, a beautiful and cozy old home, decorated with loving attention to the smallest of details; we loved our queen bed, in the cozy front room. For approx $90 we also got the private bath, with the claw foot tub (which we enjoyed after a big day of hiking). The B&B in Woody Point is very close to the Tablelands (which you must see if you are in this area). In fact, right out the front door is a spectacular view of the Tablelands and the mountains just over the water. Just down the road are two must-do hikes, up the Partridgeberry Hill lookout at the Discovery Centre and the Green Gardens hike down to the ocean. The B&B breakfast was delicious, toast and local jams (including partridgeberry jam), muffins, cereal, and fresh fruit salad. WiFi worked well, and everyone was so friendly and helpful, including advice on where to stay next, and where to find authentic gifts such as home-knitted mitts, hats etc to take home. The same couple, Jenny and Stan, run the Merchant Warehouse Retro Café & Wine Bar, located on the waterfront of historic Woody Point. The night we were there, there wasn't music, but we could see they were set up for regular acoustic musicians and heard that they often held concerts upstairs, including The Once who were there in the summer! The food in the restaurant was bar-food, quite yum. The decor was all wood, very cozy and casual. The front of the business is a fun 50s theme diner atmosphere. Overall we had a really great visit, loved chatting with the owners, and wished them continued great success and a well deserved holiday coming up! Fun facts - we now can watch Sherman Downey's video of Blue, again, and can say 'we were there!' as the video unfolds on the streets of Woody Point! I was supposed to fly out yesterday evening from Deer Lake but I missed my flight. I'm on a flight…read morethis afternoon and needed a place to spend last night. I drove up to the Holiday Inn Express (on Bennett Avenue) and asked if they had a room even though I didn't have a reservation ... and they did. In fact, I was upgraded to a larger king room. The rate was $139/night. It's only about 10 minutes from the airport so I didn't have far to go. I had a conference call this morning so was able to have a late check-up. A complimentary hot breakfast was included (I didn't check it out). WIFI (it's fairly speedy) and parking are also complimentary. Apparently there is an indoor pool with an 80 foot waterslide ... alas, I didn't have my bathing suit to check it out. There is no restaurant onsite for supper so I ordered a pizza for delivery from Pizza Delight.

This is by far the most discussing Hotel I have ever been …read more I had to check out right after I checked in because of the condition of my room , calling it dirty would be a compliment . The whole hotel has carpet , which is fine if you would take care of it once in a while . I stared hitching the moment I stepped into this facility and stop when I finally checked out . Personnel working there very unprofessional , especially the manager Ben is very rude . Stay away from this place , 5 minutes away from this place there is the " Tranquil Waters inn " where with the same price you get an outstanding service and beautiful rooms overlooking a lake .
