In the morning, when we arrived at the Deer Lake airport and rented the car, the very helpful car rental staff girl I asked her where good places to eat in Deer Lake are... And she exclaimed the Irving Big Stop and Deer Lake Motel. We had brekky at the Irving Big Stop. Which was good, not great. They bake their own bread there so there's that... But, then we got back to Deer Lake later that evening around 4-pm. Some time to kill before flight. Went to Deer Lake Motel restaurant. Everything looked good. I saw the poutine. And it looked good. But we didn't want a huge meal either, just something to tide us over. We had the nachos with beef! And yes, they were delish! Not too wetty, wetty or messy, messy. It was simple and clean. And exteme delish. We both commented on how tasty. And cleaned the plate. I think for food-wise, you are GTG here....

Deer Lake Motel was at a very convenient location - right off the Trans Canada Highway, so we didn't have to drive around an unfamiliar town in the dark. Convenience is the one of 2 "pros" that I had for this motel. The other - a large flat screen TV to check out the local weather and national news. Room itself and interior was quite outdated. I found a huge ants on the wall, and we heard rain dripping from the upstairs room hitting our window sill ALL NIGHT LONG.... imagine that. Also, this motel is located right off the major (and only) highway, so naturally it was noisy. Make sure to ask for a room on the backside so that your room is not facing the highway, and upstairs so that you don't need to hear the "waterfall" all night long in case it rained. Overall, 2.5 starts but rounded up to 3 :-) This motel's high point would be the convenience, for a quick and convenient place to stay and sleep for several hours. We paid half of what they charged here and got a better, cleaner room....

The sunset is divine. The weather has been beautiful in Newfoundland this year; great, since it's Canada's 150th. We made arrangements to meet family here, and the plan has come together. Tomorrow we do site seeing. What I love about this campsite (glamping?) is that they are prepared for shopping you will need to do if you run out of stuff, but you can also go out to eat if you do not want to cook. The room has a coffeemaker, toaster, and kettle. There's a BBQ as well, and a picnic table to eat outside. Wish we could stay longer! Free wifi here, when you might not have had access on your way up. Come on up to chill out and relax. I'm in!!

Cabins are spaced close together and there's a big lawn in back with swings and playground, right on the bay. Not for those who want to feel they're in the country side, but Rocky Harbour is a quiet, small town with a friendly feeling and great Gros Morne views. Cabins are clean with sink, stove, microwave, cutlery/dishes, shower/bathroom, 2 bedrooms, flat screen TV, and Internet (get a cable from the office). Even a big pot to cook your lobsters!

After staying here for couple of nights, we came back here again to stay later on our trip. It was that good. Place is super clean. I'd say one of the cleanest cottage I've ever stayed, period. Kitchen - spotless, bathroom, spotless, floor and table, beds and towels - all nice and clean, and well stocked. The front desk lady - Margaret was very helpful and personable. We stayed for couple of nights, drove up north for couple of days and came back to stay here again. We left some items in the fridge when we checked out, and she saved all the stuff in our fridge until we came back. We were really surprised by her hospitality and kindness (milk and butter there was quite expensive in Newfoundland!) Room was very big, spacious and comfortable. We stayed at cottage #9 (studio) and that was more than big enough for 2 people. Cottage #6 was 1 bedroom and it was actually too big for 2 of us. It had a gas fireplace and way on the back so really quiet. My husband had tears in his eyes when he found 2 beer mugs in the freezer :) I'd recommend this place for anyone - couple, family or singles. It is a very comfortable and clean place to stay with personality and hospitality. A very short walk (1 minutes) to the town to eat or shop and easy access to the highway.

This is a typical KOA. The campground is well-kept, with a variety of sites. Some are in open grass…read moreor gravel, some more secluded in the woods or next to the lake, Spirity Pond. Average site width is 30 feet and level. The back-in sites are angled for easy access and the interior roadways are wide. Hookups are on the correct side. No low branches. Not all sites have fire pits, but they will provide a portable pit if you ask for one. The camp store is well stocked. We camped for 5 nights in site #85, which had 3 way hookups. The free wifi was strong, but #85 is pretty close to the office. Our site was on a corner, so it was about 40-50' wide. It was also near the dump station, although separated by a stand of trees. We stayed here mid-June, so the campground was only ever a third to half full. There are several seasonal RVs, but they aren't "junky". Most of the RVs in my pictures are seasonal. This is a quiet campground. I was worried because it's right on a road, and our site is close to it, but the sound of cars is minimal. My favourite thing about this campground is the songbirds. The birds, mostly robins, keep up a constant, cheerful song in the background. It really makes for a peaceful, relaxing stay. We took an easy-moderate hike around Spirity Pond. It is not an accessible trail. At a strolling pace, it took us about an hour. We did not see any wildlife on the trail, but there were fresh moose prints in the bog next to the path, so be alert! The campground is close to the Gros Morne visitor centre. The community of Rocky Harbour is about a 15 minute drive away. Rocky Harbour has a variety of small cafes and restaurants, a gas station, convenience stores, etc.

We found the atmosphere to be relaxed and unpretentious - breakfasts were hearty (bacon, eggs, toast, homemade jams), cod cakes and fisherman's brew on the two mornings we stayed there. For the nice accommodations the price was quite low ($65/night). Lucas House is very close to Deer Lake Airport; but it is also about a one hour drive to get into the heart of Gros Morne National Park. Lucas House was a good place to stay for day trips and for travellers passing by the TCH but for longer stays at Gros Morne it would probably be better to pay a bit more to stay inside the park.

Not a lot of ambiance, a distinct "smell" in the room, an elevator that you have to manually operate, and actual physical keys to access the rooms. Pretty cool actually. Ultimately though the rooms left a lot to be promised. The TVs were barely functioning. There were plugs that weren't working. The beds, while comfortable, creeked quite a bit in terms of noise. Overall given the location and pricing of the hotel it's passable. It's not a "oh my god I must come back here", but a good hotel if all you wanna do is sleep.
