In the morning, when we arrived at the Deer Lake airport and rented the car, the very helpful car rental staff girl I asked her where good places to eat in Deer Lake are... And she exclaimed the Irving Big Stop and Deer Lake Motel. We had brekky at the Irving Big Stop. Which was good, not great. They bake their own bread there so there's that... But, then we got back to Deer Lake later that evening around 4-pm. Some time to kill before flight. Went to Deer Lake Motel restaurant. Everything looked good. I saw the poutine. And it looked good. But we didn't want a huge meal either, just something to tide us over. We had the nachos with beef! And yes, they were delish! Not too wetty, wetty or messy, messy. It was simple and clean. And exteme delish. We both commented on how tasty. And cleaned the plate. I think for food-wise, you are GTG here....

Deer Lake Motel was at a very convenient location - right off the Trans Canada Highway, so we didn't have to drive around an unfamiliar town in the dark. Convenience is the one of 2 "pros" that I had for this motel. The other - a large flat screen TV to check out the local weather and national news. Room itself and interior was quite outdated. I found a huge ants on the wall, and we heard rain dripping from the upstairs room hitting our window sill ALL NIGHT LONG.... imagine that. Also, this motel is located right off the major (and only) highway, so naturally it was noisy. Make sure to ask for a room on the backside so that your room is not facing the highway, and upstairs so that you don't need to hear the "waterfall" all night long in case it rained. Overall, 2.5 starts but rounded up to 3 :-) This motel's high point would be the convenience, for a quick and convenient place to stay and sleep for several hours. We paid half of what they charged here and got a better, cleaner room....

Beautiful beach feel:) Good size balcony to relax on and enjoy the view of the water from the front side. The floors were also very nice (first thing I noticed walking in haha) and it just felt very therapeutic and homey. It also looked like there were paddle boarding and canoeing available to rent across the street. I didn't get a chance to do it or look in to it but I saw people out there enjoying themselves. Overall I def recommend this spot in the Norris Point area!!!

Hmm, this port is a bit of a curiosity to me and a few other passengers anyway. Relatively…read morespeaking, there's not much here or in the town, and one wonders why stop here except out of convenience given its remote location. There is a Tim Hortons though, woot woot. The port's schedule shows that there are only 31 berthings in the whole season here with the Norwegian Joy doing just 3 of those berthings and also being the largest ship to do so. By comparison, the ports at Halifax, Sydney and Charlottetown had 180, 112, and 91 berthings respectively scheduled in 2023. Actually, it doesn't matter that much to us, as when there is no compelling attraction, we enjoy just getting off the ship, getting our fitness steps in by walking about town, and dropping in somewhere for Wifi (i.e., Tim Hortons) and we're happy. So that still works here, but frankly this port stop has the least I've ever seen of any stop from a tourism standpoint. Just saying, for what it's worth. Maybe one day, i'll learn the why's for a cruise stop here.

It is a surprising finding and my favourite restaurant during my recent trip to the west coast of Newfoundland. I liked it so much that I visited here twice during my short trip here. We had two dinners here and tried majorities of the items on their menu. On both days, the servers were very efficient and friendly. They don't offer a long menu, yet the chef is showcasing the confidence and perfect cooking technique on every dish served to the table. There's not a single dish that's not delicious for the items we've tried. - Bread and butter: We fight for it. - Goat cheese salad: flavourful creamy sauce mixed really well with the refreshing lettuce and radish, nicely presented - Seafood chowder: Sufficient amount of lobsters. The fresh seafood taste really melt well in the soup. I enjoyed it so much. - Crab cakes: It comes with two crab cakes. So fresh and soft inside and crispy outside. Another perfectly cooked dish. - Moose samosa: Interesting combination of local food ingredients and Indian cuisine. - Slow braised beef: The sauce is very tasty and beef is also braised really well. Easy to chew. - Lobster linguine: It is so delicious with large amount of lobsters and cheese. We have to order extra. - Chicken and vegetable linguine: Balanced flavour. - Pan seared cod: we tried both the butter version and the one with tartar sauce. I personally prefer the tartar sauce coz it is more flavourful. The fish is fresh and cooked well. Overall, my favourite dishes are the lobster linguine, the bread, the chowder and the crab cakes. They also provide great value for money for fine dining experience ($50+ per person). I strongly recommend this place to all of you.

The best part of this inn is easily the scenery and the staff. The panoramic views from the hotel rooms and the dining area are absolutely incredible, looking right out over the water. The warmth and hospitality of the hotel staff are a huge reason why this place still gets a very good rating from us. However, on the day we checked in, the entire local area hit a major power outage. Because the hotel does not have a backup generator, we had no electricity, no AC, and had to navigate around with a flashlight. After a long, exhausting day of hiking, the lack of power definitely soured our initial experience. For practical visitor info, guest parking is conveniently located on the backside of the hotel, and a nice breakfast is included with your stay. They also have laundry facilities available for guests, though you will want to keep in mind that there are restricted hours of usage. Overall, it is a lovely base for exploring Gros Morne, but a backup generator would make it a flawless 5-star stay.

I flew in and out of Deer Lake…read more I had to do a lot of driving along the western side of the province and rented a car from Budget at the airport. The car I had was awesome! It was new with heated leather seats, a heated steering wheel (I want one!) and Sirius XM radio. The staff were friendly when I picked the car up and dropped it off.

During my last visit, I had noticed that there were some scratches/indents on the back of the bumper of the car that I had been assigned. When I notified the desk agent, he insisted on providing me with another vehicle, as he was not aware how the damage took place and he wanted to ensure I had a perfect vehicle. The one downfall is that sometimes there is no one at the kiosk and therefore the keys can be placed in a receptacle. I am never really comfortable returning a vehicle by dropping keys off and not getting a receipt. However, that is probably just me.
