Pretty great park! Westside Park has lots of trees by the playground area, so it's nice and shady. It is very picturesque here, too -- I could see this being a place to take fall photos because of all the trees everywhere. There's also a wooden bridge and a creek that runs through the park, lending to the picturesqueness. I'll get to the most important part, though: the playground. Yes, there is a playground here, and yes it is super fun. The playground equipment is spread out, so the giant slide is separate from the swings, which are separate from the playground system, which is separate from the sandbox. There is also a basketball court here (two, in fact), and a few tennis courts. There is also a huge covered picnic area with several tables, and a sheltered restroom. When you're coming from Main Street, you won't immediately see the playground. Don't despair (like I and the children in the car did!)! You have to drive into the park a bit before you get to it. If you're visiting for the playground, don't park at the first batch of parking spaces. Follow the signs to the back of the park, where there are parking spaces adjacent to the playground.

Although I used to live in Greenwood, I never took time to explore this park. From Main Street, which is the entrance you can drive through, it appears to be just a baseball diamond. But when you slow down and enter the park, you see all kinds of things to do. Beyond the initial parking lot, a lane winds its way back toward a creek that runs through the middle of the park. Additional parking near the creek is convenient to reach the tennis and basketball courts, the multiple site playgrounds, the shelter and restrooms, and even the dog park! If hiking is more your source of fun, you can walk over the bridge spanning the creek by the parking lot and get a good work out. To the right, you wind between the creek and a clean dirt landfill that has elevated the ground about ten feet (the area is fenced in for safety reasons). If you go straight after crossing the bridge, it leads you up a hill. If you stay to the left, the trail leads you towards the entrance of the park. I don't think the park has a loop to bring you back without retracing your steps. I look forward to checking the park out once the weather is warmer and the foliage is in full greenery. Review #544

Found some beautiful fungi on our nature walk today.

Great park. We love that we can get in the woods for a hike, ride bikes, eat a picnic, and then go play at the park too. We come here often.

I have been visiting this park since I was a small child and still take my children here to this day. The city of Greenwood does an amazing job taking care of their parks. Very clean and the playground is fun for all ages of children. Basketball courts, tennis courts, softball diamond and a dog park only add to the fun available at this park. There is also some great trails to walk if you want to take a peaceful stroll.

Great park. Playground is far from the main road, lots to see and do, and actual flushing toilets (even if there are a lot of bugs in the outhouse, still better than a stinky port-o-potty)

The courts are in very good shape and has a small set of metal bleachers for spectators to sit and watch. Also in the front of the park is a shelter with picnic tables and a grill. The park has a decent amount of parking spots, but they can go rather quickly if there is an event at the park. A little deeper in the park is a small ground with a jungle gym with a couple of slides and a set of swings. The play area ground is lined with wood chips. There is another shelter across from the playground that has picnic tables under it and a grill just outside of it. You will also find a restroom structure in the area of the playground. The park's bread and butter however, is it trails. The trails are partially paved and partially in the woods. Picnic tables are scattered about the park, along the trails. There is also some open green space along some of the trails as well. This park is dog friendly and very peaceful. It has a nice bridge that crosses soothing and flowing Pleasant Run Creek. Down the street from this park is the Northwest Park Annex which has many similar amenities. This is a nice park for renting a shelter or trail walking. The city's website explains the park saying the park is best defined more by the natural landscape than recreational amenities.

My toddler granddaughters, aged 1 and 2, were free. I was really impressed when we were handed one sample sized bottle of zinc oxide sunscreen per person at the gate. I was even more impressed when I passed thru the gates and saw the sunscreen station that was set up for all guests to reapply, as needed. Great idea and fantastic perk. I'm a serious germ phobe and locker rooms at public pools and water parks typically give me serious anxiety. But I have to say, the womens locker room was very well kept and there was absolutely no standing water, anywhere. I was even more grateful for the cleanliness since I had 2 toddler in tow. There was plenty of room for me to lay a towel down over the double row of benches to diaper and dress my little ones without being a space hog and getting in others way. Everyone in our large group really enjoyed the lazy river. It's a nice size, with a section that you can choose to either take a path under sprinklers or avoid it all together. There seemed to be a few places where you could get in and out, but most of us just used the main entrance/exit. I didn't get to try out the slides, since I had 2 toddlers with me. But my teenager obviously enjoyed them and rode the slides with his buddies for most of our visit. When he tired of slides and the lazy river, he got himself a burger from the snack stand and said it was good. If I were to complain about anything, it would be a few issues with the "kiddie" area. First, there is not one single spot in the play gym that you can stand without being sprayed with water. It kept my granddaughters and I from getting in it more than once. It's impossible to see where you're even going and not enjoyable, at all. My granddaughters both panicked when I walked them thru it. I noticed during our entire visit that not many children really played on it, mostly around it. The side of the pool with the walk-in entrance is also lined with orange cones that are mega toddler attractors...which makes the marching lifeguard constantly scold them to stop, no matter how much their parents are clearly trying to deter them. The parents of the other children that my granddaughters made friends with also stopped even trying to get their children to leave them alone because the lifeguards clearly were going to continue to bark at them to stop playing with them, no matter how much their caregivers were clearly trying to get them to leave them alone. The area to the side that's set up more for toddlers was pretty cool. It's a neat cause/effect dam type system. If we ever go back, I would bring some toys for the kids to play with in it.

The park was created to filter municipal runoff water. Talk about a good use for a wonderful place. The park has two playgrounds. The one near the front of the park has more modern equipment that includes a merry go round, a saucer swing, a percussion play set, traditional swings, expression swings, a roller slide, a spinning chair, a Sway fun glider and a huge jungle gym with monkey bars and slides. The ground is lined with the rubber matting found at most newer playgrounds and it is accessible. There are some glider swings around the perimeter of the playground area, along with two picnic pavilions with picnic tables under them. The other playground area has an older jungle gym with slides. That area is prone to flooding and the walkway leading to it was flooded during my visit. You will find picnic tables under nearby trees to sit, relax, and or eat. The park does not have a shortage of green space to do field activities like play catch, fly a kite, have a picnic, lay out, or run around. You will also find a decent full basketball court back by the older playground area. There is a large pavilion in the center of the park with picnic tables under it and overlooks a decent sized lake. The pavilion and the shelters can be reserved and rented. The park is home to a 25-hole disk golf course. It is a nice course, but can get a little soggy/muddy in some areas, so, I recommend you don't wear your favorite shoes. The park is also part of the Historic Greenway Trails system which is 17 miles. It is an awesome trail that is well maintained. My only gripe is that it is prone to flooding and water can really pool up in some areas. Once again, I would not were my favorite shoes here. I did not spend much time in the wetlands area, but it is home to numerous birds and wildlife, including sandhill cranes, herons, egrets, otters and alligators. This is a very nice park. It blends the best of a nature park with the best of a modern park. I was not a fan of the flooding though. My shoes were a muddy mess. But my little enjoyed herself, so it was worth the visit.
