I loved the vibe here the second I stepped through the door! The atmosphere is so nice and the music playing throughout the shop was lovely. They even had a live DJ spinning while I was browsing, who incredibly happened to be my tattoo artist! They have an amazing selection of vinyl records and CDs to dig through. Such a cool spot--highly recommend checking them out!

Located on the 2nd floor of SALT. Lots of parking. Please be sure to scan the QR code when you park and scan again at the store to validate your parking. Great selection if you are into cds, vinyl albums etc. Good value for used cds and vinyl. Nice staff to help you if you have any questions. They sell stickers by the cashier.

Holy nostalgia!!! Hungry Ear Records makes me understand how my dad felt as he was just so attached to his vinyls so much so he built a shelf just house them and I hold that piece of furniture so dearly which hold my craft items now making it a house to hold our treasured hobbies. Not just records you're able to find cassettes and CD's and even cool decor browsing here is just amazing with music of every kind including of course local loves. This time capsule gem is tucked in SALT of Kaka'ako second floor right beside the parking garage as our ears are constantly hungry for the playlist to feed our moods and daily grind Hungry Ear has definitely kept it fresh and alive!! Thank you!

On this trip, I was helping my parents clean out their house. My dad had a collection of records that he didn't want any more, so I called Hungry Ear and spoke with Josh. He said to bring them in. I have been to SALT many times, but didn't know there was a record shop on the second floor! It is a cool little shop and they have used records and cds. I spoke with Jack, and he said to leave the records and he'll go through them, and it would take 30-45 minutes. He looks at the condition of the vinyl and maybe even titles. But I got a call and when I went back, he made an offer for the ones he chose. He also said he'd dispose of the ones he didn't buy, which made my life easier. This is a great place to come to! Especially if you want to sell them your records. Mahalo Hungry Ear!

I went down to Hungry Ear Records in SALT. The oldest record store in Hawaii...I believe it. I am old enough to have bought vinyl records on the reg and wished I had kept my Technics turntable and record collection. The have lots of used and new records, even some cassette tapes. Who knew cassettes would make a comeback? So, why go to a record store when I don't even own a turntable? CD's. I have gotten accustomed to streaming and downloads but I have an older vehicle...so I need CD's for the old SUV. Unfortunately, I did not find anything this afternoon. But it is always cool browsing a record/CD store. They have videos, books, and merch in their good sized store. Nicely air-conditioned - they allow 10 customers in at a time...check temperatures...provide sanitizer. Friendly customer service, who will answer and open the entrance door upon ringing their door bell. Parking is available in the adjacent structure.

Such a chill space here! There's a huge variety of music on different modalities (vinyl, cd etc.), dvds, merch, and more. So many genres with very specific sub-genres, making discovering new music really easy. They seriously have a bit of everything for everyone! Staff was very welcoming and knowledgable of everything in the store. They definitely helped set the atmosphere by asking us our own music preferences and putting it on so we were comfortable as we perused around. Awesome experience here!

If you're my age, when you hear "Hungry Ear Records", it throws you back to the 90's when the local bands were aplenty, the clubs and bars (i.e., Pink Cadillac, The Wave, Moose's, Anna Bananas) and SO.MUCH.CONCERTS (i.e., Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Jane's Addiction). Hungry Ear Records is now located on Auahi in Kakaako. If you're trying to picture where (if you haven't been to their new location) AND if you're 45+ and into the grunge/alternative scene in the 90's, it's where CD cafe used to be located. Am I showing my age? Of course, proudly. Now, why did I go there? For vinyl records I wish I didn't throw away any of my records especially with record players making a comeback. However, this is why I ended up at Hungry Ear Records. It's clean They have used and new vinyl They have collectors vinyl too It's a retro millennial feel It's an option to check out if you don't find anything from Ideas Books and Music (aka Jelly's) Overview Clean: Masks are required before you enter the store and you must sanitize your hands before browsing Prices: Deals to "It's that much?!" This place is dope. Upon entering you will be greeted by the sparkling lights of the disco ball hanging up above. Along the right wall is a collection of vinyl featuring rarities and classics. I saw a Record Store Day vinyl single of Wu-Tang Clan's "Protect Ya Neck." This place has it all for music lovers and collectors. Vinyl bins stretch from wall to wall. The staff is friendly and will answer any questions you may have. They also have CDs and tapes, I didn't get a chance to check those out. Eventually, I found a rare Bone Thugs n Harmony bootleg vinyl. These are the kind of goodies we collectors search for. There is more than Hip Hop here, that is just my kinda jam. They have everything, I saw many rock classics in my digs. One thing to note, they do know their prices. You won't find a rare vinyl for a cheap price. That said, you get what you pay for, and they have good stuff. Thanks, Hungry Ear Records!

Profits support the State of Hawai'i's 51 Public Libraries. In more recent years, FLH opened a year-round used bookstore: Village Books and Music, first at the old Pier One, then a terrific space in Ward Centre next to Sedona. Due to the imminent demolition of Ward Center, the establishment shuttered the Ward location on 5/31/26, and will be reopening in mid-July at 610 Ward Ave., a.k.a. "Obama Building." While not as extensive as more famous used bookstores, e.g. NYC's "The Strand" and Portland's "Powell's Books," I thought there was a lot to love about Village Books and Music, where you could find books, but also CDs, vinyl records, games, puzzles, nostalgic Hawai`i memorabilia, and even art. While admittedly not all genres are well-stocked, when I've visited, I was impressed with the poetry section, which is small, but nicely curated, featuring a number of renowned BIPOC poets and local poets: look carefully, and you can find some signed editions in great shape. If you're looking for local Hawai`i writers or Hawaiian/Pacific materials, this store is worth browsing. And what a win-win: you get literary goods on the cheap AND you support the amazing Hawai`i State Library System: a worthy community hub committed to egalitarian public education!

It turned out to be in Downtown close to Chinatown. While it doesn't have the scale of the Last Bookstore, this store shares some of the unique design elements of its SoCal progenitor like curving shelves and large vinyl collection. A broad scan of the books on display reflects titles that seem more avant garde than more commercial curations with sections devoted to science fiction, horror, true crime, and rock music. Jamie found an existential book about his favorite band called "Queen and Philosophy" (Photo 9), while I bought an intriguing manga cosplay history book called "Otaku Japan" (Photo 5). We probably could've spent another hour in here, but we had manapua on our minds. RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://yelp.to/n9JWu5nlzl

The store blends two cultures that often go hand in hand: underground literature and vinyl records. The space itself feels very curated. Instead of a large commercial bookstore layout, the shop has a smaller, more intentional selection of titles and records that reflect niche interests, counterculture themes, and independent publishing. It feels like a place built for people who enjoy digging through shelves to discover something unexpected. One of the highlights is the mix of books and vinyl. The store carries everything from rare or independent books to records that span multiple genres, which creates an environment where music and literature intersect. Browsing through the collection feels more like exploring a curated archive than a traditional retail store. The atmosphere fits well with the Chinatown neighborhood. Bethel Street has a strong creative and artistic identity, and Skull-Face Books & Vinyl contributes to that scene with its alternative aesthetic and independent spirit. What stood out most to me was how personal the shop feels. Independent stores like this often reflect the personality of the people behind them, and that character comes through clearly in the selection and layout. Overall, Skull-Face Books & Vinyl is a great place to explore if you are in Chinatown and enjoy independent bookstores, vinyl records, and creative spaces that feel a little different from mainstream retail shops.

One thing that stood out to me is how the store still maintains the traditional bookstore experience even though it is located inside a busy shopping center. Another highlight is the range of non-book items available throughout the store. This little gem is such a treasure when you're simply looking…read morefor books or magazines to read, books to keep your kids occupied, or just seeking information on something you are researching. The State of HI government-run HI Kai Library opened in Dec. 1973, and for the next 30 years, the HI Kai Lions Club and Nagoya Lions provided monetary donations and cultural artifacts from Japan, respectively. In Aug. 2013, the Friends of the HI Kai Library opened the HI Kai Community Book Store to assist with the library's funding. Prior to the bookstore's opening, there was thought of using unused space on the ground floor of the library for a bookstore. A group of volunteers, including a carpenter and artist, and assisted by students of Kaiser High School and its Key and Leo clubs, spent much time and effort to enclose and enhance the space to make it look like a bookstore. Many of the volunteers, led by the current Manager, Lillian Yoshimura, were retired teachers who sought operational tips from similar bookstores of the Kaneohe and Kailua public libraries. They also hustled for gently used donations of books, cleaned them, priced them, and sorted them for placement on the shelves. Books were categorized and shelved in different areas: children, young adult, instructional books for teachers and home schoolers, test preparation, juvenile non-fiction, adult fiction, biographies, religion, self-help, business, cooking, crafts and games, foreign, etc. In Aug. 2013 and staffed entirely by volunteers, the HI Kai Community Book Store was open! As with any new entity, it took time for the community to learn that a non-profit bookstore had opened. Signs were placed on the library lawn as traffic whizzed by on busy Lunalilo Home Rd. With regular prices ranging from 50¢ to $3 per book, semi-annual sales of 50% off of its entire inventory during a one-week period were held to thank its patrons. This bookstore has been very successful over the years, as it's now known throughout the HI Kai community. Teachers and parents of little kids are especially happy, as well as the community residents! Improvements have been made over the years to tailor its services to the community: · In addition to books, its inventory has expanded to: - CDs & DVDs - all interests of music, books, films, and blank ones. - Vinyl records - popular, classical, and world. - Sheet music for all instruments. - Calendars, greeting cards, puzzles, world and road maps. - Clean and books that look new are placed in an area for gift giving. · Monthly and pop-up sales of 50% off specific categories of books, e.g., biography, history, and military; cookbooks; adult fiction; children's; home and garden; business, etc. · Story telling, sing-a-longs, and other events for children. · Acceptance of magazine donations that are categorized and placed in an area where they are free for the public at their choosing. Note that every item sold is donated by community residents, and all proceeds benefit the HI Kai Library. The bookstore is selective of what is donated, as items should be stain free, no age spots, no torn pages, and is in saleable condition. No encyclopedia or textbook donations. The bookstore was our lifesaver when we were babysitting our grandkids. Not only was it air conditioned so that we could make use of the cool air during the hot summer days, but we loved to take our grandkids there! They would spend a lot of time there, browsing through the many books. And because the cost of the books was so reasonable, we allowed them to pick as many books as they wanted, which they would later donate back to the bookstore once they had finished reading them. Hubby and I have and continue to make good use of the bookstore. Hubby collects vinyl records of the 1950's and '60's, so he periodically checks the offerings and has gotten some deals! He also reads a lot of novels, so he's constantly on the lookout for certain books. I gravitate to the local cookbooks that are out-of-print, books on chess for our grandson, books on HI by local authors, and books on Christianity and travel when I'm doing research. COVID requirements have affected the bookstore's operation. It was closed for 14 months after COVID started in 2020 and reopened in May 2021. Hours of operation are: Mon/Tues 12:30p - 3:30, Wed/Thurs/Sat 9:30a - 3:30p, Fri/Sat closed. Free parking available in the library's parking lot (21 spaces). COVID compliance required: max 6 shoppers in the store at one time, 20-minute shopping time limitation depending on number of people in line, facial masks, social distancing, and use of hand sanitizer. However, with the recent increase in COVID numbers, the bookstore had closed temporarily in Aug 2021 and will remain so until further notice. We look forward to it reopening again when it is safe, and I'm sure others do too! What a great gem in the HI Kai community!

I need to thank the individuals who donate their precious items, the staff and volunteers who work here that always keeps the store clean, well-stocked, organized, and always provide friendly and top-notch service. All the money earned here goes straight to the public library!

This store is huge in the amount of books it has. It's like your great grandpas library full of…read moredifferent books scattered everywhere, but in some sense of crazy Order, if that makes any sense, your ADHD brain could either be really activated or it could be overstimulated Price is vary. They're all over the place, but there is so much to choose from. The service here is really good unfortunately there was a lady here that tried to use a "" gift certificate that did not work and she was not very polite to the staff The staff handled it really well and they were still polite back, although it made for an uncomfortable experience everybody just carried on, and she proceeded to yell at people behind her as well. Some people just are having a day sometimes. I loved how many things there were to look at I unfortunately had to also think about the fact that I was gonna be flying home with weight but if you're a book lover, definitely stop by and give this place a look at
