Bookoff Pearlridge... what can I say? Cheap books, cheap movies, cheap games, and cheap whatever else they sell lol. Sadly we don't have many bookstores on the island, there is of course Barnes and Noble, Bookoff, bookends, and few other stores. After Borders closed, we don't have many places to go to buy brand new books except for Walmart or Target. However, there are many good finds here and a chance to give some used books/media/toys a new home. The staff here are very nice, though of course they don't have a system catalog here. But that's part of the fun, the treasure hunting fun. You never know what you may find. Bookoff also has a buyback counter, where you can sell your used movies, books, etc. but just be aware they are like the old saying where they only offer pennies on the dollar. So you won't make a lot of money selling here. But if you just want to get rid of stuff and make some money, this may be a good option for you. read more

Shoots, This Place is the So Da Bomb! Came in yesterday with two shopping carts stuffed with books and honestly didn't know what to expect -- but wow, this place totally exceeded my expectations! The owner greeted me right away with that warm, aloha spirit energy. No attitude, no long drawn-out process. She got straight to scanning my old dusty books while I waited, and when she was done, she texted me -- yes, texted me -- to let me know. Walked up, got my receipt, got my quote. Super professional, super smooth. Here's the best part: while I was waiting, I browsed around and found three gifts for my grandchildren that I knew they'd love. So in one trip I freed up a ton of space at home from books that had been taking up way too much room and knocked out some gift shopping. Win-win-win! The whole setup is easy too -- rolled the carts right from my car into the store, no stress. My friend was chillin' in the massage chair outside the whole time, so nobody's time was wasted. I was originally just gonna dump everything at Goodwill. So glad I didn't. I'm already planning to come back with my old DVDs and CDs just sitting my shed in the backyard. I needed a quick and easy place to sell my old games, dvds and music cds. I know the price is much lower than I could get if I sell them privately by myself but who has the time to manage all that? Love the idea to reuse and finding a home for items... This Pearlridge Mall location is located on the ground floor next to TJ Maxx and though it's on the cozy side it's very well organized and I'm amazed how it's all stored to neat easy to shop. Filled with all the usual books, DVD and games what seems to be the popular items at this location is the anime items, plushies, keychain, figurines and the insane amount of Funko Pop and to find any of the items you're looking for I assume you need to rely on the staff as the inventory here is quite extensive. Prices though I assume goes with the popularity of the characters but it was quite fun to shop and look at what they have. Definitely a great place to shop for that quite item as many are no longer found in stores and shipping could take some time so a shop like this is a great choice weather you're buying or selling that item. My daughter and I came here to sell some of our books back and she wanted to look around to see what she wanted to buy. There were so many books here. It's cool that they buy books but they look at condition of the book, etc. The process was easy. You basically give them your picture Iid nd a phone number. They basically text you when they're ready to give you money for the books you sell back. They give you probably half of the actual price. Located inside Pearlridge mall right next to TJ Maxx. Brought some anime figures in to sell, learned they're knock-offs and they don't take them. That's fine, I didn't know but that's policy so I'm good with that. The issue is after I got home and took a look at my figure. A couple were now broken and one is missing an accessory. So not only can I not sell them I can't even display them if I wanted to keep them. would not recommend dropping off stuff to sell unless you don't care what condition it's returned in. read more

As a kid growing up in da 808, I remembered my love of going to a record store to read comic books, listening and checking out records, & of course checking out the books/magazines. One of my favorite stores was - "Tower Records", as I first discovered this store in Sacramento when I used to go up there every summer to visit my grandma, and I would walk a few blocks from her house to the Tower Records store with my cousins. As a kid, I used to always wonder why Hawaii didn't have a Tower Records store, then somewhere around the late 70's/1980 Tower Records finally made it's way down to the 808! Since that time, Tower Records went out of business in 2006 as they had to file for bankruptcy. So sad that Tower Records is no more. I guess record stores are no longer a common thing to see in the retail industry, as people's behavior changes through the years. There are a lot more different venues to get music, so records & CD's have become kinda irrelevant to the younger generation. Lucky for me, there are still a few stores around that sells stuff that I used to buy as a kid, and - Book Off is a cool store that reminds me of my days as a kid going to the record store. Of course Book Off specializes in "gently used" CD's, DVD's, & other electronics, but if you dig around, sometimes you can find some brand new unopened stuff. The day I was cruising in the Pearlridge area, I didn't even know that there was a Book Off store in the Pearlridge shopping center. I had a little time to kill, so I popped on into the store to check it out. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but came across a discount section of CD's, so I decided to see if I could find some DEALAGES! Sure enough, I found a few great deals as I ended up buying (2) CD's. I am a regular here for over 15 years. But the new staff they have; more specifically the young "haole" girl that runs the counter is very rude. She stuck up for another employee that had very poor communication skills. She said "he's just soft spoken. Everybody is different." I told her it's a skill that can be learned. She then scuffed me off. Well then; maybe that job isnt right for him if he can't communicate effectively to your paying customers. The entire staff needs to be cleaned house and trained on how to interact with people. No people skills at all. Then I had my 4k blurays evaluated to sell. The rude "haole" girl only offered me 10 cents for each movie! Are you effing serious? When you're gonna turn and sell it for $30? So that ridiculous offer was her big middle finger to me. I remember when Book Off first opened. Pearlridge and the Ala Moana locations were my favorite. There was even one in Windward Mall for a short time! When I was younger, I'd spend HOURS in these stores browsing through all the amazing books! I'd buy at least 5 everytime too... Nowadays, I don't have that kind of time, and I don't get to devour as many books as I used to, and as quickly. But it's always awesome when I do get the opportunity to stop in. It isn't really the same as it used to be though. I mean things are always changing, but BOOK OFF is more electronics, toys, movies, etc now. There isn't really even half of the amount of books there used to be. I guess times have really changed in the last few years. Don't get me wrong though, there's still a pretty decent selection. They will also buy these items from you if you want to get rid of them and make some cash. I have not bought or sold anything here yet. Looking for a place to buy or sell used movies and other film items? After having a yard sale I took what was left of my movie collection to see what I could sell/make. I was surprised how much I made and how much they bought. Make sure they are in good condition and you will have a better luck selling Blu-Rays than your DVDs. If you have a lot to try to and sell you can borrow a cart from them to go pick up your boxes from your vehicle and wheel them down. We were looking for some particular books for our daughter and when we asked Jared we were shocked that his knowledge of where to look was phenomenal. There are so many books with such various selections to choose from that it was amazing to watch him in action. You can save so much money here. The value is in the savings and the variety of choices are amazing! They even have books on sale for $1!!! That is ONE BUCK! Four quarters!!! And some of these books went for over $30! If you're looking for true value and save a lot of money simultaneously, then this is the place. They have a variety of deals with so many topics that I'm sure you'll find something you like. Ask for Jared. He knows everything they have in the store and don't be surprised if he takes you to the exact book in a specific aisle on a specific shelf under 30 seconds. I haven't been to this Book Off for a very long time. Whenever I go, the items I like are always way over priced than the going value, and leave the store empty handed. Not this time though! Book Off is located in Pearlridge Uptown towards the TJ Maxx side. It's a pretty big store with a large selection of books, TVs, electronics, video games, retro games, DVDs and Blu Rays, Funko Pops, and etc. Limited capacity at the moment, so wait outside first and wave down an employee through the window to check if you can go in. I didn't have to wait and went right in. The first thing I noticed coming in was there were more toys and anime stuff and a lot less Funko Pops than before. There's more watches and other electronics. This store is like a Book Off plus part Eco Town. A majority of the items are books, which is great. There's not many of these stores in Hawaii. I found a particular book I've been looking for, and got it at good deal. Better than Amazon prices. I was going to check out, but I noticed a section of retro games hidden behind the counter with the wall of plexiglass! I found several games to add to my collection, and they're were surprisingly sold at great deal! Every time I came here before, the retro games are always extremely overpriced. Glad they finally adjusted their pricing. Obviously, I ended up with more things, but I'm happy about that! Overall, I'm instantly impressed with this store, and I hope the Book Off in Don Quijote can move back to Ala Moana and expand to the same size as this Pearlridge location one. The staff was friendly and helpful. If I lived closer to Pearlridge, I'd come here several times a week! Book Off buys your books, games, Funkos, electronics, TVs, and etc as well. So if you have a bunch of things you want to just get rid of and want some cash back over donating it, then bring them all here. Don't expect a huge return back since they need to resell it, and possibly take a loss if they don't sell or need to sell at a clearance price. In my experience selling things to Book Off and Eco Town, it depends on the person who's checking it. Some will give you a respectable price, while some will give you a few cents, and some won't even accept it while another will. So it's weird. read more

Decided to sell whatever unwanted books I had laying around the house (yes, I hoard haha) and was happy that a place like this exists. Ive been to rhe Book Off in Don Quijote Honolulu (near Ala Moana) and will say that that location was chaotic and not for the faint of heart - Especially introverts. Too loud and too much going on. Lots of book variety though! Anyways, this place is located near TJ Maxx's first floor entrance in Uptown Pearlridge. They have signs posted in the windows about days of the week they have sales. No line ahead for me to sell my books back. Most AWKWARD staff ever. Couldnt explain to me the process, was unable to present to me instructions, no eye contact, etc. I opted to sell my books and have whatever wouldn't be taken I would recieve back. Ive received anywhere from $0.20 to +$10 for my books. Some money is better than no money. After the process of selling back is done (takes 10-30 minutes for the staff) they give you your cash and youre on your way! TIPS: They do not take spiral-bound books, no books that belong to a specific machine (Ninja Blender books, instruction manuals, etc.), and everything is paid for on a need basis. They take electronics, collectible figurines, DVDs, CDs, books, and 11/11/2019 Sales - 24 DVDs for 10.45 + 9 brand new DVDS for 3.33. Outrageous! read more

I didn't even know this place existed until I had to look for a bookstore. My kids needed to read non fictional book to meet their class goals before the school year ends so instead of buying brand new books, I've decided to go check out this place. I walks by this store so many times and didn't see any books until I had to go and get books. On the front they look like they only sell anime figures and such. Go towards the back and they have aisles and aisles of books. They are mostly used but looked new. The best part is that they were only 1.00 - 3.00. There were books that cost more but it depends on what they are. We bought so many books for what I would have paid 3 times more online or at bookstores. My oldest found sequels which was a win win. read more

I use to always go to jellys if you know that place but they went down & i totally forgot about this place till i went to the mall. PARKING: This place is located at pearlridge so they have a whole lot of parking. But they do get busy. SERVICE: The time i went i dont think they in force 6 ft apart because they had people like 2 ft apart & i seriously getting some anxiety knowing people dont stay 6ft apart. Only when checking out but even the line, lines up in the skinny aisles & so much people is like squeezing by you to pass you. The workers were FRIENDLY. I do love that the books here are cheaper & they also have a section that all the book in that area is just $1. Thats deals. Went to trade in some DVD's and was pleasantly surprised at the amount I got. Apparently they scan the DVD's through a database to see if it's worth re-selling depending on their stock and then give you a price. The girl at the register did tell me that they might be phasing out DVDs soon. Not surprised since everyone streams nowadays. It's a nice to place to treasure hunt and browse. The store may have a weird name but it's a must go for deals. Located inside Don Quijote just go through the main entrance, take an immediate left and walk to the bathrooms. Walk past the bank and you'll see a big sign on your left. Why come here? Good deals on book, dvds, games and more. This is usually a first stop for me with the kids and they'll scoop up a bunch of books to read while we're down here. Books are usually a couple bucks each and in excellent condition - cheaper than amazon! Can't go wrong. This is a Japanese store. Lots of Japanese books and manga if you're looking for that. I recently got into collecting older generation console and games and this place has a a few to look at! I bought a used PS3 here for a decent price and its been running good for a month now, I don't see it having any problems in the near future. They have lots of PS3/PS4/Xbox and a decent amount of PS2 games, the few times I went the good titles were already sold but I was still able to get a couple of socom games (very cheap deal!) I used to play when I was young, the disks were surprisingly very new and didn't have scratches or damage to them(probably won't be the same for every ther disk there). Keep in mind you will probably see a few games that are over priced and you could find cheaper deals on ebay. They sell PS4 consoles for a decent price, and you will see one or two that are too much for the amount of storage it has. There might be one you want which won't be "available for purchase" for a couple weeks but there should be enough there you can choose from. I have also seen PS2 consoles, PS3, PSP, Xbox, and nintendos like the switch, gameboy and wii. Other than that they sell books, music cds, movies, watches and other electronics. The customer service is nice you can also call to ask if they have an item in their inventory. read more

My husband like to come here to look around and usually finds stuff he likes. Today, we decided to sell some books, CDs, and some tech that has been sitting in our house collecting dust. It was our first time selling to them so I wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out the process is really simple. I went up to the desk and let the girl there know I wanted to sell some stuff. She gave me a form to fill out my name and phone number, and gave me a approximate time they would be done. Since she said it would take about an hour, i asked her to call me since I wanted to run some errands. They called my back about 45 minutes later and said it was ready. Because they were buying some tech stuff, I needed to fill out additional paperwork, which I really didn't mind doing. I guess its a way for them to verify that the tech stuff you're selling the is legit (i.e. not stolen). They did buy back my 7 hardcover books and 7 CDs for like $10. Could I have sold it online for more? Yes I could, but I went to Bookoff for the convenience, I don't want to deal with meetups or shipping them. But it's to be expected. They are a business after all and they need to make overhead. Overall I'm happy with the transaction. read more

Best book store that I have seen in Honolulu. Eclectic selection. Good prices (average price for paperback was ~$5.50-7.50, but there were a bunch of quality non-remaindered books on the dollar rack). I ended up walking out with seven books, including a hard cover that costs $9.50, for ~$36. The inventory is good and eclectic. It is not large enough that you can count on being able to find a specific title, but it is varied enough to do what used bookstores do best, which is to show you the book that you didn't know you wanted to read and which you would never find at a chain store. There is room for serendipity. The thing that stood out to me the most was the quality of the used books, which is great as a buyer. Almost all of them would be equivalent to "like new" to "very good" condition ratings on Amazon. For folks selling, temper your expectations about offloading books that aren't in great condition. The shop offers a large Japanese book selection too. No Chinese books, though. It also sells a bunch of manga, comics, games, figurines, used tablets, etc., but I don't know how to evaluate those sections as they were not what I was looking for/at. read more

I LOVE Book Off! I have found so many amazing deals here and so many books to fill my home library! Also if you aren't into books they also have used DVDs, Games, Collector Figurines and other electronic items. The store itself is a little small for browsing so you have to be accommodating and come back to certain sections once other people have finished looking. Three things would make this bookstore even better! 1. Invest in a system to keep track of store inventory. If you are looking for a certain book don't bother asking the staff. While they are all nice and helpful they won't know. Go to the area yourself and if it's there great if not you are out of luck. They have no record of what they have. 2. Take out the books that aren't selling. I think I have a better understanding of what they have than the staff sometimes. The same books that weren't selling a year ago are still wasting space on the shelf. If they had some sort of system to see what is selling and what isn't then it would be a benefit to not only them but the customer as well. 3. While I have found many great newish looking books here, they really need to inspect what they buy a little bit better. Some books are so old or have so much book mold they really should be in the trash rather than trying to sell them on the shelf. Many of these gross books have been on their shelves for years which is why they really do need some sort of system and understanding of their inventory. Check your books before buying them to avoid bringing home a moldy book. Either way it's one of the best used bookstores I've ever come across! And also THE best deals on used books! I'll always keep coming back I love this bookstore! I find gems all the time on their shelves. If you have tried selling your bluray collection or books with no luck theb this is a great place to go. You won't get a pretty penny for your dvds even if they are in excellent condition (and they will most likely sell it for 3x the amount but atleast it helps declutter your media). You cab expect about $1 per bluray you turn in. The nice thing is that the return is in cash and hassle-free. I think it would be awesome if they had an option for store credit to get slightly more. On another note here you will find lots of second hand dvds and books for purchase at a decent price. read more

This place is pretty cool in what they carry and can save you lots of money if you like what they carry. However, the customer service is kind of snobbish, not very helpful. Or they try to help but you get the feeling they're not happy about it and just wish you didn't bug them. Can't really blame them, it all comes down from management. I don't really buy books anymore not with the advent of ebooks. However, when a book is really good I like to have the solid manifestation in my hand. Old habit, I guess, dies hard. I haven't bought anything yet, just haven't been able to find what I want. When I ask if they ever get them in their response is they do but sells out as soon as they put them out. They have several areas to look for bargain basement deals. You can spend a lot of time looking through these. I have but haven't found anything of interest to purchase anything. If I lived closer I would frequent this store often and try to educate the staff to better customer service. read more

This Book Off location has the best stock and in my experience offer the best prices when selling things of all the Oahu locations. If you familiar with how Book Off does buying of your merchandise they check a central database so you should get the same amount no matter where you take your stuff. I think this is cause the buying staff know how to find the exact items in the database. Other locations seem to struggle with this part and if they can't find it in the database they won't buy it. If you are looking for books this is a good place to start. Probably the best selection on the island. Good Manga selection second to the Kaheka location which is almost all Manga. read more
