Awesome fish & chips place! The fish was very fresh and everything was cooked to perfection. The salads were delicious (quality ingredients and damn tasty). The portions are huge but they provide takeaway containers if you can't finish. The staff are super friendly and kept coming around to check up on us even though we were sitting outside. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, though it did get pretty crowded during dinner time. I ordered the Grilled Seafood & Salad plate which came with a whole filet of fish, 2 prawns, and like 5 calamari strips on top of a bed of salad (I got half garden salad and half Hunky Hero salad). I usually can't eat that much food but it was so delicious I finished my entire plate and then some :) If you upgrade your salad like I did, I would definitely recommend getting half and half otherwise the portion of the salad is huge. Ketchup and chili sauce is free here but sauces like tartar, aioli, etc. are $2 each (for a little saucer). Ordered the grilled seafood special with fish of the day (basa) , calamari and prawns and choice of salad rice or chips. Chose the greek salad. Got a massive serving of delicious fresh salad, a small fillet of Basa, two calamari rings and two large juicy prawns. Delicious satisfying feed all for a reasonable $16.60. Lots of options. What an absolute delight! And my lawwwd the burgers! Seafood basket is a great sampler. Why? You get to taste the amazing prawns, calamari, and grilled fish, all marinated in their secret blend of spices and oils. Along with chips or brown rice, and their selection of salads, the sampler is worth every bite. $16 for the meat, $18 for the meal. Great service, huge portions, and yummy tender seafood is why I love this place. It's also "open late" so you can probably grab a yummy meal before/after the pub. Best fish and chippery in Melbourne. I've found heaven! This may sound a little (very) weird, but my favorite meal is a huge, fresh salad, with some grilled seafood perched atop. When it's all fresh, it hits the spot and you don't feel bad for having eaten something unhealthy. I'm sure they have more than this, but Hunky Dory makes EXACTLY this meal, only not with JUST fish, but fish AND calamari AND shrimp! For under $20 you can get a huge salad with three seafoods and chips on the side. SO good, perfectly seasoned and fresh! It's in a cute area here, and the staff is super friendly. Downside is that if you sit out front you will be fighting the birds away from your meal. Which, I suppose, makes the seafood experience all the more authentic? read more

I was a little apprehensive to go to lunch at what I thought was just a casual fish and chip joint. I am not super fussy about what I eat but I didn't like the idea of eating an unhealthy greasy meal for lunch. Hunky dory was anything but this so I was pleasantly surprised to receive a beautifully fresh fillet of salmon pan friend on brown rice with a nice big serving of salad. My boyfriend orders the seafood salad on brown rice which he devoured!! The salad bar is awesome with 4- 5 to choose from. The menu is pretty extensive considering what it is!! It was pretty busy but the man who served us was so helpful and explained how the menu worked. I would definately come back here. Yummo! read more

On a recent trip to Melbourne, we wound up in South Melbourne and happened upon Hunky Dory, a counter service fish eatery in a "hipster" friendly area of town. South Melbourne has quite an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops, all house within traditional two story buildings. Hunky Dory's is a chain, next door to a Nando's which is also a chain...but the quality did not suffer because of its heritage. Rather, the food was actually quite good. We ordered the grilled salmon with greens and a fried fish basket with calamari, cod...I believe and potato cake and chips. The grilled salmon was perfectly cooked with a nice smokey flavor and contrasting texture between the subtle crust and the moist center. The greens were sauteed with a little hint of seasoning, maybe a tad under for my taste. The fish and chips was well executed. The fish, which I thought was cod, was flaky yet moist with a nice crust that perfectly absorbed the vinegar. It was also a big piece of fish that took a good portion of the plate which was covered in chips that were perfectly crispy albeit a little under seasoned. The calamari I found to be the star of the show. While only three pieces came with this plate, there wasn't a hint of the rubbery-ness that general befalls chain restaurants. Overall, the food really was on point at this establishment. The ambiance of the room on the other hand can be hit or miss depending on your expectations. Seating is self service, which can be positive and negative. Inside seating is sparse with only a few four tops with the rest being two tops. Privacy is nonexistent so definitely not a place to come on a romantic date. There is outdoor seating with heat lamps, but when its 30 degrees out, it's not that pleasant and during a hot Australian summer it can be quite oppressive. Overall though, I give it four stars because it offers a good to very good dining experience. I would not hesitate to come here again the next time I'm in town. read more

Great food. Terrible terrible loud and inappropriate music. So many cafés with the potential to be something great get this simple thing wrong. I can't and won't fault the freshness of the food and the value for money. Really nice fish and chips. However, spoiling all for me is the terrible loud rap/top 40/electronic noise that is played at a significant volume (even at the outside tables). The music was from a Pay tv station so adding to the ambience murder were the advertisements played after every few songs. We've visited twice with our young kids (ie i am not a grumpy old man) and both times music of this nature was played. The average age of those around me was probably 35 - 45 - I.e certainly not the demographic for this style of intrusive music. So who is it being played for? The staff I suspect which is not for whom a business should be creating an atmosphere. Many cafés we love play music but it's inoffensive, gentle jazz or mellowed alternative acoustic stuff that no one is going to find offensive or intrusive. Walk up and down the stretch of bay st right near hunky dory and you will find a number of other cafes - none of which are playing this style of music or indeed any music at a discernible volume. Perhaps they get that you need to get everything right to maximize your clientele. Such a shame that hunky dory produce such decent fish and chips and mess it up with thoughtless tasteless music unsuitable for i suspect the majority of clientele and played too loud. Easiest thing for me to have done would have been to not bother writing anything and simply stop going. But so many businesses get this wrong! thoughtlessly playing commercial radio or tv stations for their own benefit and in doing so treating me and other customers to screeching Harvey Norman commercials when trying to chill on the weekend. So I thought id vent with genuine feedback to anyone running a cafe. For this reason only, I won't return to hunky dory. Such a shame. read more

This place has the potential to be great, but the terrible quality if the service staff let's it down. When I asked a few questions about the menu, I was simply told, "it's all on the menu". We asked for grilled fish but were given battered. I was driving by with a friend and the sign caught my eye "Fish & Burger bar". Not being much of a seafood eater, but wanting my friend to get something different I voted for this and we were soon reviewing the menu. Unfortunately you have to go up and order from the cashier, so you are forced to stand read the menu which is hung from the ceiling McD's style. Too many words, too many choices and too awkward reading I settled for a simple burger.
