There is a medium-sized lot in front, with an overflow lot across the street. We ended up in the overflow lot. The combined ticket costs $25 for adults. Theoretically, you can see all 5 museums. However, as we arrived later in the day we only were able to see 2 of them. If you want to maximize your value, arrive earlier in the day. We walked out of the ticket lobby into the central sculpture garden / lawn. From there, The Dr. Seuss Museum is ahead and to the right. If you turn left and walk to the end of the lawn, you will come to the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum on your left. When we were there, they had a piano on the covered arcade along the front of the building. This was a magnet - various people played a bit during our visit. I suspect that some of the other 4 museums don't get the same level of exposure / traffic as Seuss. This one was much bigger but less crowded. The guard / docent was very helpful and gave us a brief history of the place. It was the original of the 5 museums, built around 1905. A young Ted Geisel could have explored it, in fact, as he lived in the area. It is part of that class of museums where Gilded Age millionaires were getting on in years and were looking to leave a legacy and find somewhere to house the stuff they'd picked up on their world travels. That is not meant to be condescending in any way. The Smiths had certain interests and collected things in those areas. The museum has a room devoted to Samurai armor, one for Chines jade, one for Islamic (mostly fabric) art, a huge gallery of plaster replicas of Greek and Roman statues from antiquity, and a room of (at the time) contemporary artworks (now about a century old) of artists of interest to the Smiths. The architecture is an exhibit in its own right. One room in particular (where the Samurai items are displayed) has tiffany windows each dedicated to someone like Shakespeare, Dante, etc. If you are here and pay for the collective admission, by all means stop by and see this place as part of your visit.

There are many priceless works in the collection like art from Claude Monet, Georgia O'Keefe, Auguste Rodin, and more. There are 4 floors to explore, and don't forget to use the lower level bathrooms! Both bathrooms are full of art and absolutely beautiful. I'd recommend checking out BOTH bathrooms since the art is different in each. The museum gift shop also has a variety of beautiful, high-quality, and unique gifts. During my most recent visit, I bought Smith College tea as well as a kimono fabric hair clip.

It was bigger than it looked from the outside; not what you'd find in a major city by any means but there were several rooms and there was enough content there to spend the better part of an hour on in brief. Some people were having academic conversations that may well have lasted longer. Their principal exhibition was a variety of Native American (and Australian) works which provided a robust overview of a wide variety of cultures. Some of the other exhibitions were kind of screechy and political and didn't really offer much as art, but they rotate exhibits and some variation in quality is expected. The parts where they let art speak for itself were worth visiting.

Weird. I'm visiting Northampton for a few days and thought I'd check out their museum. When I…read morewalked in I was greeted and informed that part of the museum was closed for a new exhibit. The greeter looked me up and down and said flatly "you can leave your stuff on that table". The table she referred to was small and I asked if I could put my backpack near the coat rack. She responded "I don't care about the backpack. Im worried about that coffee" and pointed to the coffee in my hands. I suppose the vague description "stuff" was to imply my cup of coffee? She then asked me if I would give a donation stating "we're broke and could use all the money we can get". I said "sure" and dropped in the little amount of cash I had and entered the museum. The greeter then turned and walked into another room. The museum is one, very small room that has probably 4-5 cases that display some antiques donated by community members. I was less than impressed with not only the small state of the museum but also the service. The one thing this place has going for it is that it's free.
