Visiting Boston for the first time, my husband and I took a side trip to Springfield for the Basketball Hall of Fame, and I randomly remembered Holyoke. Looked it up, and it was just a 20-min. Uber ride to Holyoke from Springfield. Holyoke itself is a small town. Driving through, I saw a lot of abandoned factories/warehouses. It looks like a quiet place. I'm glad that volleyball, while being more popular in the west coast and globally, chose to keep some roots in the city that invented it. (Side question: does the FIVB put anything into this HOF?) My husband and I were the only visitors during our time there. It took about an hour to go thoroughly through EVERYTHING. The HOF shares a building with the children's museum. There is an admission fee of $8 for adults, and there are varying discounts I can't remember. It's a museum with several displays - a history of volleyball (including sister sports beach/sitting), display boxes for each member of the current class of inductees, biography displays of recent inductees, a video that plays when prompted (on a CRT TV - come one guys, you can at least upgrade that!), half a volleyball court with net set-up from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, info boards on notable players like Karch Kiraly and Flo Hyman, and different paraphernalia (my fave - a 1984 Olympic game ball from the men's gold medal game). There is a small store with t-shirts, sweaters, mugs, stickers, etc. I think the place could use a little more updating. It looks like it got stuck in the 90's, but I was glad I got to see this little gem. I think it's worth the trip (from Boston) if you're a hard core volleyball fan.

This theater is not just poorly run--it's dangerous and openly breaks laws. The owner discriminates against people with dietary restrictions and special needs, blatantly violating ADA regulations. Customers with medical conditions like Crohn's disease, allergies, or other dietary needs are forced to throw away or put away their safe foods, making it impossible to enjoy their experience. To make matters worse, she refuses refunds when asked and only offers useless coupons--even though most people who endure her mistreatment have no intention of returning. The reason I'm leaving this review is because of how horribly she treats customers--even after you spend $100+ on a trip with your family. If you bring a snack from outside for yourself or a disabled child, even when you're already paying for theater snacks, she makes it an issue. This is ridiculous and overstepping. As a customer, it's none of her business if we bring a specific snack for a medical or personal reason, especially when it's justified and necessary. What makes this even worse is the owner's constant claims that she's running a "small mom-and-pop business." But her behavior is anything but. She acts more like a dictator than a community-focused small business owner. By degrading and harassing customers, she's giving small businesses a bad name. They even let all the children pull the whistle, which they absolutely loved! This children all received party favors of one free future Trolley ride. My advice is to get a membership for an even more amazing deal! The museum is run by the Connecticut Electric Railway Association which was founded in October 1940. It is the nation's oldest incorporated organization dedicated to the preservation of the trolley era. The museum operates a 1.5 mile heritage railroad on an original portion of the Hartford and Springfield Street Railway Company's Rockville Branch. The museum hosts a variety of events throughout the year that are themed around dinosaurs, Easter, Halloween and Christmas. 2023 marks the museum's 45th year hosting Winterfest. The museum and property are decorated inside and outside with over 15,000 lights. Guests have a choice of riding closed trolley cars or an open air 'electric sleigh' down the tunnel of lights for approximately 25 minutes. We chose the latter option, but be sure to bring plenty of layers and blankets as it can get very cold. Afterwards we headed into the Visitor Center where we saw multiple model train layouts and vintage trolleys decorated with holiday lights. "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was playing on an endless loop in the theater room while children were writing letters to Santa. Cookies, hot chocolate, and other light refreshments are available to purchase. Guests also have the option to take family photos with Santa Claus himself! Coffee, tea and hot cider were included, plus rye bread and gingerbread cookie. The soup was quite good. Many people had worked very hard to decorate the hall, make homemade crafts and baked goods to sell, and create a welcoming atmosphere. We had a very good time talking with people about their Hungarian roots. The many people running the event were extremely welcoming and friendly. I felt like a welcome guest in their home.
