This review is for the Huntington Learning Center in Pleasanton. My child was falling behind on her subjects in 5th grade. She was assessed at Huntington and we learned that she was a grade level or more behind on certain subjects. We knew that she needed additional support to get up to speed prior to the start of 6th grade. Mona provided a clear action plan to address my child's needs. We were provided a set number of hours that was an estimation of the time needed for my child to catch up to her grade level. We would meet up with Mona every 4-6 weeks to see the progress our daughter was making. We will see the scores our daughter achieved on different subjects. We would also discuss the focus of the upcoming weeks. The improvement was gradual in the beginning. Once my daughter got used to the process and routine, we saw dramatic improvement in her grades. Even her attitude towards learning has greatly improved! Mona mentioned that confidence on the subject matter is what really contributes to the success of a student. As my daughter gained more confidence in her work, we can clearly see that she began having a much more positive attitude about learning. We owe our daughter's success to Hunting Learning Center. Before she came to Huntington she was showing Below Average Scores however she has improved a lot in all areas. She was also accepted to the High School she applied to. My ADHD 4th grader has been coming here for English help for over a year. They start with a very thorough 3-hour assessment, after which they're able to tell you about your kid's strengths and weaknesses in great detail. At $150 (or more or less depending on the promotion), I think the assessment itself is worth doing even if you don't end up purchasing their tutor services. After reviewing results, they sell you an intimidating package. I say intimidating because at $75/hour for 1-on-1 tutoring, a 60-80 hour plan becomes a very significant expenditure, but if like me you know your kid needs it then it's worth it. They typically will recommend coming at least twice a week to start, and there's a detailed lesson plan with multiple workbooks for vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing (for English, but they also have math tutoring). One thing I really like are the monthly check-ins where the center director Mona shares exactly what the kid is working on, how much progress, and upcoming lessons. They're also very flexible and accommodating regarding schedule changes, your concerns about the direction of learning or progress, etc. I feel like it's pricey but you do get what you paid for, and actually the rate is reasonable considering it's private tutoring. After the initial package runs out, you'll be able to purchase hours at a little more discount. Anyway, given my son's condition we'll probably be with the center as long as he has homework to do. read more

This center works miracles in short amounts of time. In case you're wondering, no, there is no reward in exchange for reviews. My review is a genuine reflection of my observations. A little background first: The little one in attendance is a 7 year old, who by the start of 2nd grade, was determined to be 2 grade levels behind in reading and language arts, despite all the hard work from the child, and everyone involved. After thorough research, it was decided to give Huntington Learning Center a try in order to see if we could get him all caught up. As expected, from the beginning, this center did not disappoint. The initial assessment was so comprehensive, that it measures the reading, phonics, writing, and math levels, as well as the child's learning endurance, and how well they can follow directions. After the student is well examined, Mona, who is the director of the center, comes up with a detailed plan. She is so very kind, patient, and organized. She will tell you everything you need to know about the scores. From that information, she will give you an estimated number of hours the student will need to attend for each subject in order to get to the desired level. In just 3 short months, the confidence, reading level, and writing abilities have exploded, and even his skeptical teacher is shocked about how much he has improved. He has not been retested at school yet, but based on what we are seeing for ourselves, he's come up at least one full grade level in his reading already. Where he once frequently refused to do any reading, or writing of any kind, he is willing reading signs and books, and writing cards for people, while enjoying his hard-earned progress. The instructors all seem friendly, and the kids enjoy going. The instructors are also all accredited, meaning, it won't just be another student teaching the kids. The rewards system is different from other centers as well. I thought that would be a deterrent for the students, but what they do reward the kids with seems to give them a more intrinsic motivation and appreciation for hard work and improvement. He no longer asks for little toys or treats in order to participate each session. Instead, the congratulations of his efforts, and seeing how far he is coming along is more important to him. This center is not at all close to his school or other activities, and so, we must commute in order to participate. Needless to say, we don't mind based on these results. I really like Huntington's one on one tutoring with individualized teaching plans. I have two sons who needed different things this past summer. My younger son was about to start middle school and I wanted to make sure he was prepared academically. He didn't have much homework during 5th grade and I noticed he was having trouble with reading comprehension. I didn't want him to struggle in 6th grade. He was given an assessment and Mona devised a summer plan that included both Math and English. My son actually enjoyed his summer sessions and worked hard. It helped that there was no homework. His favorite teacher was Jennifer because she was fun and he learned. He has transitioned easily into middle school and he will definitely be back next summer. My oldest son had just finished his freshman year and he wanted to take a test prep class. He took a practice ACT and was prescribed a certain number of hours with a tutor. He worked with Mr. Haniv and learned well with the one on one sessions. His score went from 26 to 32! Thank you Mona and the Huntington Staff! read more

Parents are the best and the worst judges when it comes to assessing their kids' progress. Best because there is no other child in the world that compares to their kid. Worst because their kid never seems to be as good as that other kid ever. :) As a parent it has never been easy to assess my child's progress - no matter what how many times I re-read 1-2-3 Magic and other such parenting self-help books. I have read almost 5 such books over the last summer and I think I can consider myself an expert on my own abilities. And I think I just can't objectively assess my child. Forgive me if I generalize, no parent ever can. So, I have to find other adults - professionals - that can objectively assess my child and keep me and my wife honest on how things are. Huntington Learning Center in Pleasanton, CA is one such place that my 9 y.o. receives objective assessment and full support to overcome challenges in learning. It doesn't matter what the challenges are, because every kid has their own set of challenges - what matters is if we as parents can trust and work with professionals - who also are parents - and who can empathize and provide the constant feedback and advice. Under Mona's leadership this place operates with a great degree of efficiency and care for the children. I won't reveal too many details, but if you wanted to speak with me privately, I can help you see why I have written this feedback - it comes from the heart of thankful parents of a child who over last 8 months has grown more confident, resilient and competent compared to their older-self. Yes! It took eight months - when all we wanted to do was try it out for 4-6 weeks of summer. It is bloody expensive - but hey it is not more expensive than those annual family trips to India or that vacation to Mexico. The true competition is to get better than your older self. Only advice to other parents is give it time and look for those little things that are changing - big rocks are often hard to see shifting since it happens over a long long time. Some recommended books that will help your parental anxiety - Grit by Angela Duckworth, Influence by Robert B. Cialdini, The Story Teller's Secret by Carmen Gallo and Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss. These are not parenting books - these are the books that will help you deal with your life better as they did ours. Good luck - and keep the faith! read more

Our daughter had a very tough school year last year, after starting new in her Livermore middle school in January. Math and core classes were all suffering, and she was looking at mandatory summer school. We had a friend who used Huntington in New Jersey, so we gave them a try here. Blondie started with a three hour assessment test (taken over two sessions) and we were impressed with the findings. They made perfect sense to all of us, and they devised an excellent plan to address the math and reading comprehension issues. We got an in depth look at the reading materials in particular, and the way they progressed seemed perfect. We agreed to send Blondie there after school for two evenings per week, then ramp things up over the summer, four mornings per week, so she would be just above grade level when school restarted this Fall. Worked like a charm! Blondie's reading comprehension tests showed excellent progress, her math teacher has complemented her on improvements she's seen, and science is going well. So far, almost all A's. Hats off to the managing director who guided us through her schedule, met with us regularly to discuss progress, and was just a pleasure to work with. He had a positive, "we can do this" attitude that gave us confidence. Blondie loved coming here, and even though tomorrow is her last scheduled session, we are welcome to bring her back if she has a problem later on this year. All of her tutors were excellent. We were extremely disappointed. They market themselves as if they can help kids with learning disabilities, but in the end, they behave like these kids are unteachable. My son's act score did not improve by a single point in about 6 months. The teachers keep changing, and no results. They just keep asking for more and more money. We stopped and wanted the refund, and it was almost a month, and no refund was given. read more

I have a 6th grader son. We came from Japan 2.5 years ago and my son was struggling in English. We have been helping his History and Science homework and we didn't know how to help him. so we have been tried 2-3 different English afterschool school but he was still struggling. Then we started Huntington about 1 month ago. We've already start seeing the difference. Now he knows how to resolve homework by himself. We have a conference every couple of weeks so we know where his levels and how he grows. My son loves Huntington, we want to Thanks to all staff in Huntington for supporting my son. My high school freshman, who has an IEP, has been getting excellent support for English and Math at HLC since September. This was the best decision we could've made in the most challenging of years. If it weren't for the professional tutelage of the amazing teachers here (these are experienced teachers from the surrounding school districts), my son could have fallen so far behind that this year would've been a complete write-off. We're fortunate and grateful to have the means to provide this support for our son - if we think about the value we are getting, it is absolutely worth it. We are now confident that he will be well prepared to transition back to in-person learning at FHS when the schools re-open here. P.S. Mona, the Center Director, is very hands-on and cares deeply about all the students. As an FHS parent herself, she is experienced in identifying the specific needs of each student and is a strong advocate for student rights. We are definitely blessed to have connected with her and to have made the decision to enroll our son at HLC. read more

THERE WERE NO RESULTS A'marie tutored twice a week For a year over $5000 I'm sure was spent. I had to ask for practice sheets and updates about her progress. I was told only when I asked and that she was making progress needed more practice. After 8 months or so I lowered it from 4 hours to 2 hours. Instead of giving me a reason the owner would say let's add her back to 4 hours and I can charge your card for that. I declined and her reply was I understand if you can't afford it which I thought was bias * never said I couldn't afford it. After listening in on some sessions and talking to A'marie I didn't feel like they were making enough progress. After getting no where with the owner I went out to have her tested. As I suspected A'marie was not where they said she was. I emailed the tutor and who stated she wasn't a math teacher and couldnt give Me advice. How is she tutored by someone who can't give me advice? To be told she needs to practice does not align with the program I signed up for. read more

My 8th grade daughter lost a lot of learning during the COVID shut down. She's always been a smart kid but during the shut down she became very withdrawn and depressed. It was hard for her to adjust to the return to school, plus she'd basically lost a year's worth of learning. I'm so glad my husband and I made the choice to send her for tutoring at Huntington. She didn't exactly love putting in the extra hours but now at the end of the school year she has pulled her grades up from mostly Ds to all As and Bs (except for math, but her grade in that, her least favorite subject, is at least a passing grade now). She is so proud of her accomplishments and has a whole new attitude towards school. I enrolled my son in HLC Pleasanton sometime around Aug this year. My son's initial score was 24. Mona and her teachers guided him well, provided materials, college related information and provided strategies. It was a very pleasant experience for us. My son took his ACT exam and scored 32 in first attempt in December. My son is a very driven boy and HLC complimented him very well - provided good content and several practice tests. There was regular review of his test results to identify strengths and weak areas and focus was given to improve those. From the first time I met with Mona at Huntington Learning Center, I was very impressed by their system and their approach. They have an excellent method of assessing the students. Their individualized teaching plans really work. My daughter who is in fourth grade had a difficult time with her reading and writing. Ultimately Huntington is no different than Sylvan and other franchise. Do your homework and make sure that their curriculum will work for your kid. It didn't really work for my son and I feel like I wasted $3k. I cannot blame the franchise 100% for the results, but I really felt like they were just blaming my son and that their method was not to blame. Given that my son was getting 1 on 1 tutor, I was hoping for customized approached in terms of teachibg instead of just going through their work book. Ultimately, it ended up being another chain like sylvan, for my son it would've been better to hire a private tutor for more customized approach. read more

Beware of paying ahead if you choose to go with Huntington. In our case the local Huntington declared bankruptcy and the corporate office would do nothing to help us retrieve our payments, other than to offer to fulfill the contract by using tutors more than an hour away. In addition coprporate offices did not assist us because they wanted to retrieve their money first. Though it appears paying ahead will save you money it could cost more if anything happens to the franchise. read more

Our daughter struggled academically before starting Huntington Learning Center in Boca Raton Fl. Our daughter had a very rough time in long hours in h.w. and did not really understand what she was comprehending. Now, it's much better than ever. I brought my son here because he was struggling with his grades and was beginning to have a negative attitude towards school and learning. It was amazing what they were able to figure out in terms of our issues and how to solve them. Now my son really enjoys reading and learning and his grades are all's 3's 3+'s. HLC has been such a benefit for both of our children (14 years old and 11 years old.) Both of them were struggling in school and were seeing private tutors for math. The tutors were simply helping them with the a specific concept. HLC helped them build a foundation that they could build from and brought them up to grade level. They began in May with an estimated amount of hours they believed would get them to the middle of 9th and 6th grade. At first, it was very overwhelming for both kids because we started in the summer. It was a huge commitment for our entire family. They got through it and now the benefits are showing with both holding all A's and B's. Not only are their grades much better, but they also have confidence in themselves! HLC was flexible with our schedule and always tried to accommodate us if need be. The teachers were great and Dan (Director) held a meeting every 3 weeks to go over their progress. The only negative for me is it is pretty expensive. However, we felt it was a necessary investment for our children's education. read more

As a parent with a child who has ADHD I'm sure most parents can understand the challenges kids face specially when it comes to academics (reading) . As I viewed their website I was very pleased to know that Huntington has certified and experienced tutors in assisting children with ADHD. Once viewing the website I decided to schedule the assessment. Going over my child's results, Mona was very straightforward, confident in my child's development in regards to reading, she has a positive nature and right away had a plan and knew where to start. I walked out of her office feeling very hopeful, relieved and excited for my child. What I also really liked was the fact that Mona schedules video meetings not just with parents but with my child's teacher regarding growth and areas of opportunities. I love how we are all on the same page and working towards the same goal. My child entered 1st grade last year and his reading level was barely at kindergarten level and Over the course of 5 or 6 months I'm happy to say my child is reading at 1st grade level! My child went from knowing less than 50 sight words to mastering over 100 words, he went from not being able to identify certain letters along with sound recognition to knowing ALL his upper and lower case letters along with their sound. He's gotten so much better at blending and has a greater sense of different vowel sounds. They have a solid curriculum and it works! Now my child is reading on his own and with confidence! We started using Huntington when our kids were in middle school. Both of us worked and we didn't want every evening to be consumed with homework and difficult, when the struggled. We used Huntington all through high school and especially during ACT prep. Between the 1st and 2nd time each of our children took the ACT, their overall score raised 4 points! One of our children had an IEP in school, and Huntington was outstanding! We continued to leverage Huntington through college. Our son struggled with school from the start. We ended up with having him repeat kindergarten in hopes that he would reach grade level. Still no help, the struggles continued all through his second shot at kindergarten. He moved on to 1st. grade with little or no progress. We definitely made some changes for him before he started 2nd grade. That's when Huntington came in the picture. After assessment tests were completed our eyes were open to the exact areas he needed help in. From day 1 our son not only has rebuilt his confidence in himself but he achieved all his deficits. Both my kids went to Huntington when they needed a little extra help with their reading and writing. It's definitely not cheap, but you have to view it as an investment. The kids have really benefited from the one-on-one, individualized instruction and have more confidence in their classrooms since going through the program. Everyone who works there is friendly, nurturing (when necessary), professional and accommodating to busy schedules. While my kids didn't always walk in excited to work, they left with smiles on their faces because of what they accomplished that day. I highly recommend it. read more

We began our 2nd grade Daughter at Huntington in November 2010. Having our Daughter participate in this program has been a positive experience. Starting out below grade level and currently approaching grade level and above in all areas is exciting, Our Daughter loves attending. The staff is FANTASTIC, Cheerful and Always accomodating to a schedule change. The Director, Dan is wise and intuitive to the needs of our Daughter, he understands the type of "learner" she is and intergrates this with her individulaized program. Fantastic! My daughter was really struggling with reading (at about a kindergarten level when entering 2nd grade), and we went to Huntington for help. After a few months of tutoring, her improvement is unbelievable. While she still has more to learn in order to catch up to her grade, her attitude toward reading has completely changed.
