The 3rd Ave Hub, Melrose and Mott Haven sections of the Bronx may be areas in the Bronx where real…read moreestate is exploding. I know because I have bore witness to the prices over the last few years. It is reminiscing of what took place in Harlem and BK. However, the real estate prices have yet to translate to what you see in the area. So before gentrifications takes a strong hold in the area, there is still an abundance of the fast food establishments that always manage to be more overly saturated in low economic areas with minimal alternatives. Making your choice for a quick bite redundantly unhealthy. La Liga Deli Food is a refreshing alternative. It appears to be a regular deli or bodega (for my Hispanic Bronx amigos) and it is. However it also offers much more then just chips and the familiar pet cat mascot that many bodegas inhabit. As many delis have started to do, they offer fresh juices and smoothies along with your honey turkey and cheese hero. What I was excited about was the salad options. All fresh ingredients with several options to choose from. You can create your salad with a grilled chicken option and 5 additional ingredients for $6.99 and it comes with a water/soda. I think the best part was the gentleman who prepared my salad this afternoon. From the moment I approached the counter he had me "laughing out loud" with all his antics. He was pleasant and a joy to interact with even though he told me they don't have avocado as a salad option. I'm not in the area often and if I am it's only driving thru, so today I was happy for an options that was fresh and I could enjoy. I went with Spinach greens, Cajun chicken, red onions, boiled egg, cherry tomatoes, chic peas, red kidney beans and balsamic vinaigrette on the side. The Deli also has several items that at one time would be very hard to find in this area, ie Argo Teas, Zico coconut water, and more products catering to healthier options. The store is extremely clean and bright. They offer other food options both hot and cold at the counter next to the salads. Just A Note: They appear to accept debit/credit cards and there was a bit of a lunch time crowd so there may be a slight wait during those hours.

I have two words for you; Chopped Cheese! If you don't know what that means then you can't fully…read moreappreciate the beautiful art shop that is crudely disguised as a deli. I came to the Bronx for a few days and asked someone native to the area what I just had to have. Chopped cheese was top of the list. First I had to research what I was searching for (and maybe you're wondering as well). Here's what I found. It all begins with a hoagie bun, unsalted butter to fry the beef (which is 85/15 or 90/10 by the way), finely chopped onion, salt, pepper, garlic powder, American cheese, mayo for bread, and some iceberg lettuce and tomato. Now you know why it's a must have. But where to find such a delicious sandwich? First Deli isn't just a spot for CC. It is THE spot! Inconspicuous, just sitting there with the word "DELI" in large letters, it makes you wonder if your GPS is working. But trust me, it is. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year this is the place and walking in you'll know for sure. The aroma off the griddle fills the place, as does every miscellaneous item you would expect at a city convenience store. I doubt if this place could hold more than 20 people at a time, but I lucked out as only a few were inside with me. I placed my order and eagerly awaited. I feared eating in front of anyone, as my self-control had already begun to wean. Order up, I took the bag and walked briskly back to my hotel room. And 5 minutes later, it was gone. The smell, taste, and texture were as beautiful as the Statue of Liberty at sunrise. As beautiful as Yankee Stadium on opening day. As beautiful as the Botanical Garden at the height of Spring. You get my point. But here's another; I went back later that night for a second one. How could I not? After all, they are open 24/7. I had some wonderful meals and quality coffee while in the Bronx, but this Chopped Cheese from First Deli was first on my list of favorites.
