We were having a hankering for some smoked meats since our Thanksgiving feast and I have been wishing to try this place since moving to the area. On Saturday We called in our order and picked it up in 30 mins ready to go. Service from the staff was kind and we were given sauces to try for our to go order. I favored the original sweet sauce while R preferred the hot (no surprise there). Our order consisted of two pounds each brisket and pulled pork. We both preferred the beef over the pork since the meat was quite fatty. We verified the poundage and both were on point with the amount requested. The flavor was rich and Smokey but not too much so. Heard a few acquaintances say the slightly-divey HRI has the best barbeque in metro Detroit, and had to test that claim when dinner hour found me downriver last night. I'm going to have to disagree with them. The pulled pork on the sandwich I'd ordered was OK, but not exactly top-rate. The portion was good, and the meat was tender and not too greasy. Would have liked it to be smokier. The sweet Carolina mustard sauce I put on it (mustard-based sauces are always my favorites) needed less sweet and more mustard. A lot of my reviews include complaints that coleslaw is oversauced, but the (very small paper cup) of coleslaw here was nearly devoid of sauce. But overall the food hit the spot, and I'd go back. Besides that, HRI does have a good craft beer selection on draft, and side dishes beyond the initial free one are $.99 or $1.99. With limited dining options in the immediate locale, you could do a lot worse. read more

We came in on a Saturday and we're informed there was only one cook and it would be a little wait. We appreciated them letting us know up front and decided to stay and honestly the wait wasn't long at all. The service was great, she was prompt, and always made sure our drinks were filled. I ordered the fish dinner with a side of Mac n cheese, hubby ordered the special which was ribs and 4 shrimp, although he got 5 and we got the pretzel bites as an appetizer. The pretzel bites definitely lacked any salt, but the queso and honey mustard it came with were very good. My fish was good, 3 pieces that were hot and the batter was crisp and not soggy. The fries were also good, the coleslaw however was inedible, it was sour like it had turned and was bad. I literally had to spit it out it tasted so bad. The Mac n cheese was just ok, noodles were way to soft for my liking and not much flavor. Hubby enjoyed his ribs and appreciated that they were well seasoned and not sauced, he likes a fry rub. His shrimp was also good but needed some more seasoning for sure. His coleslaw was also bad so he didn't get to eat that. His baked beans tasted like canned beans, not what you would expect from a bbq restaurant. Again service was good, but don't think we'll go back. read more

I was on my way back from a day trip to Toledo and starving for lunch. I looked up restaurants along the route and the Huron River Inn BBQ popped up and so decided to try it. I'm so glad I stopped. The location is right off I-75 and next to the Huron River of course. The river runs directly behind the restaurant and is quite pretty. The restaurant has a bar type section as well as a bright sunroom type space. We sat in the sunroom since it was empty and we're trying to be as COVID-safe as possible. The waitress was very friendly and explained the menu, their specials and the three different bbq sauces they offer (spicy, standard and a mustard type). The menu was full of very tempting comfort food (maybe not so healthy, but hey sometimes you just need something satisfying). We opted for the homemade chips with french onion dip ($4.95) and each ordered a BBQ pulled pork sandwich ($8.95). The sandwiches had a choice of baked beans, Mac and cheese or fries if I recall correctly. Other options (e.g. onion rings) were available for a surcharge. We opted for the baked beans and Mac and cheese. The chips were our favorite item, but who can resist delicious hot from the fryer homemade chips - I know I can't! The sandwiches were IMG huge. The pulled pork was heaped at least 4 inches over the bun. We each scraped about half off and saved the rest for future sandwiches at home. My sandwich was good and juicy, though I would have liked a bit better flavor from the sauces - they were fine but not as good as my favorite sauce from another bbq place. I like intense flavor though. The mac and cheese was better than Stouffer's but not knock your socks off and come back for just the mac and cheese if you catch my drift - it was good as a side though for sure. Positively mind blowing atmosphere since new ownership! I stopped in for a quick drink, not expecting the changes that have taken place. The staff are family oriented and inviting. I was asked by multiple people how everything was going. There's no wait on beverages and the bartenders know how to make a good drink. We came in Saturday and there was a live DJ playing jams and letting the crowd choose songs. Karaoke was optional. Kitchen was VERY clean since the last time I've been in. First visit to this establishment. We ordered carry out and we were not disappointed. The food is ah-mazing! My man ordered the double fister. The brisket was incredible and meat fell off the ribs. I ordered the brisket quesadilla and it too was incredible. Just the right balance of brisket and cheese. The customer service was also awesome. Pleasant and easy ordering. Took the time to confirm the order was right before we left. Would've taken pics but we inhaled the food too fast. . Stopped in yesterday for lunch and was quickly seated. There are several TVs setup for viewing and pool and other games to keep you busy. Its very clean and provided a welcoming experience. The menu prices are reasonable and their BBQ is one of their main features. I tried the brisket sandwich and it was served quickly with my house salad. There was a good portion of meat and it was very tender. A little dry but after i added one of their three bbq sauces (sweet) it was very good. Gerri kept my glass full and provided great service. Decided to take a chance on this place that is close to home , ordered up some bbq pulled pork and brisket . The pork comes naked meaning no sauce but sauce comes on the side, first off the pulled pork very meaty , nicely shredded and delicious. If I had to make a complaint it could use a little more seasoning but I'd definitely order it again , the brisket was seasoned great meat was delicious and tasty again if I had to make a complaint it was a touch on drier side but again I'd definitely order again the potatoes were good , loaded up with butter and sour cream and skins salted nicely. Another great meal! It's not just the food but the feel of this place...it's comfortable and welcoming. Trish was our "server" today and from her Pippi Longstocking braids (I'm so jealous of her hair) to her super efficient service but most of all the friendly conversation. Wife & I stumbled on this place while out for a Sunday drive - very much a "hole in the wall" place from the outside (at least to people not from that area, such as ourselves). Streetfront driveway was a bit tight, with another restaurant (burger & ice cream type place) practically on top of this restaurant. Driveway leads into a larger parking area behind restaurant that opens up with a view on the Huron River (was later informed that the restaurant will soon be expanding to offer kayak rentals on the river along with some docks for patrons). Walking into the place from parking lot gives a strong "local bar" vibe, but some more casual dinning area is a bit removed from the bar. Place was generally clean but we could hear the crowd from the bar counter even at the other end of the dining area (and this was ~4pm Sunday afternoon). Service was very attentive - our own waitress checked up on us half a dozen times at least and also chatted with us about the local town and the history of the restaurant (was interesting), but we also had a different waitress checking on us at times in addition to the owner himself coming out after I complimented the food (he discussed some of his technique with us and also mentioned that his place had been recently nominated for a "Best Of" BBQ competition). About the food: most options were BBQ variants but there were also a fair number of seafood and sandwich options. We ended up choosing different BBQ combination dinners and tried their ribs, pulled pork and brisket. The ribs were ok, pulled pork was good, but this might have been the best brisket I've ever tasted (and said so to the server). Mac & cheese and seasoned fries were solid also. Three BBQ sauce options available (sweet, Carolina, hot) made in house. Don't be shocked to come into the bar and meet overly served and highly intoxicated regulars. Obviously unpredictable behavior can be expected from drinks but, harassing behavior is tolerated and not an issue for the owner. After being approached by a man completely unprovoked and notifying the owner of the incident it was brushed off as a "misunderstanding" after he aggressively started poking/ grabbing my shoulder and yelled at me telling me If I have "beef" with his wife I can take it up with him.... Being that she approached me and this incident came from a normal conversation is what was concerning. Let alone a grown man making it clear he doesn't have a problem fighting a woman. I'll take my business where the safety of customers is taken seriously. This tolerated behavior is a recipe for disaster in this kind of environment. read more

I have eaten here many times. The food is usually decent. The bartenders are generally rude! There is one server who is helpful and friendly but she is a lone wolf in that place! I used to kayak there stop for food before continuing on. Now they won't let you come in off the river. I guess they don't like people spending money in their establishment! read more

I went with some family for the first time since it changed ownership. We each had one of the BBQ dishes. I had the brisket. It was delicious, well seasoned and with a good smoke ring. The fat was nicely rendered and the texture held together just right - a "good hang." There's BBQ sauces on the table but my brisket was so moist it didn't need any. Everyone was extremely pleased with their dishes. I went back twice and had the same dish and each time the same results, that's always a good sign. The wait staff is friendly. It's a local bar and might be a bit loud depending on time of day but it's worth a little noise for a great BBQ. read more

Yuck! We used to always go on Friday nights for the fried perch. This is the first time we have eaten there since the new owners. I have no idea who the new cook is, but the fish was absolutely godawful! Not lake perch anymore, smelly ocean perch was way over breaded and the breading next to the fish wasn't even cooked, it was raw. The fish smelled ant tasted rotten. Whoever made the coleslaw had no clue how to do it, tasted nasty. The fries were okay, but who wants a dinner of just fries?! Don't waste your time or money. read more

I would give a zero star if it was an option. The "new" management is TERRIBLE! We waited an hour and 20 mins for my sons mac n cheese. We got a prime rib sandwich and patty melt before it... mac n cheese. None of our food came out together so we didn't eat together. They forgot items from what we ordered so we just got ended up canceling things. I will never ever go back here again. If you're looking for a hole in the wall cheap beer, this is your place. Waitress was very rude! We ordered chips and queso appetizer, we got chips and salsa. When we stated that we ordered queso, she replied that she thought salsa . My hubby said no we wanted the queso, the cheese. Waitress replied, " yeah , I know what queso is but thank you very much for letting me know" She took it back and fixed it. For dinner he ordered Bluegill with fries. I ordered Patty Melt and onion rings. He received Bluegill with onion rings. I received Patty Melt with no side. At this point we had already been there for over an hour, every other table had already left, so I told her forget it, just take it off the bill. Ordered my usual carry out. Pick three with brisket and pulled pork, I also ordered spicy bbq sauce with it. Drove 15 mins home and no bbq sauce. Like wtf is bbq without bbq sauce??? So I called and spoke with the waitress who passed me along to her boss. She asked what could be done. I explained to her I'd like to exchange my food for some hot food and bbq sauce because now I'm out $40 and possibly had to eat my food cold. She immediately said she will only give me bbq sauce and a dessert. I started to verbally get more frustrated and she finally agreed to let me bring my food back and "exchange it". So I drove all the way back and gave my phone to the "boss" lady who basically snatched the food from me and stomped in the back with it. While I'm waiting for my food I'm just minding my own business and some guy who should have been cut off 9 beers ago starts stumbling my way wanting to buy me a beer. I politely declined, I just want to go home feed my family and go to bed after working for 12 hours. Finally the "boss" hands me my food I said thank you and got no response. I inspected the food before I walked out and everything seemed to be alright. Now fast forward to when I get hone with my food and realize all they did was microwave it and give it back with bbq sauce but don't worry it's okay because they gave me a dessert, so that I guess makes everything okay. Ordered the fish and chips and a salad with fried chicken. Food was good, but it took almost 55 minutes to get it. Only after inquiring when the food might arrive, the Manager advised they ran out of lettuce and were sending one of the workers to get some from a local store. The only saving grace was the exceptional waitress Joi who was extremely apologetic and yet was not at all her problem.
