I'm so glad they updated this parkway over the years. It was be horrible with traffic and not clean but now it's very clean and updated. Rarely see this parkway with high traffic. Hope they do this to the cross Bronx and bruckner next read more

Ugh The Hutchinson River Parkway (aka the Hutch) is a ~19 mile parkway which starts at the Whitestone Bridge in the Bronx and stretches up to the Connecticut border in Rye Brook, Westchester county (where it then turns into the Merritt Parkway). I have a love-hate relationship with the Hutch. On one hand, it's the closest highway to where I live and I can easily access it to travel to Westchester or Queens. It truly is a convenience in some ways because a lot of my go-to places for errands and such are right off the parkway. The roads are well maintained and it has a lot of connecting highways. On the other hand, the Hutch is a pain to deal with. To start, the Hutch is only two lanes wide (with the exception of a few patches where it expands to three) which can lead to traffic even if there's a slight hiccup on the road. There is almost ALWAYS traffic going northbound up to exit 13 (the exit that leads you to the Cross County, Bronx River, Sprain Brook, and Saw Mill River Parkways). I can almost put money on the fact that there will be traffic on the Hutch from exits 7 to 13 at any time of the day. Finally, because the Hutch is a parkway, it's for passenger cars only; there are low clearance underpasses that are designed only for cars to fit under. This however won't stop the occasional tractor-trailer from galloping onto the Hutch and trying to fit under the underpasses. Not only does this destroy the tractor-trailer, it creates a boatload of traffic. Do I complain about the Hutch? Yes. Will I continue to travel on the Hutch? Yes! It's too much of a convenience - if I'm really in a bind I'll take side roads or 95, but even with its faults the Hutch is too convenient for me to avoid all together *sigh*. read more

That's the song I sometimes have singing in my head when driving North-South on the Hutch when there's little to no traffic. Certain parts of The Hutch, nickname for the Hutchinson River Parkway, has enough curves and wide open roads, with no potholes, to give you that nice smooth ride. Following most of the the Hutchinson River for which it is named, the Parkway winds though Westchester County from the Connecticut stateline, into the Bronx and ending at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge. The river, in turn, is named after a historical figure from the late 16th, early 17th centuries, so the full name should be the Anne M. Hutchinson River Parkway, as it says on a sign in front of one of the many picturesque stone arch bridges spanning over the highway. Interesting sidebar: Anne Hutchinson (nee Marbury) is descended from Charlemagne and had 15 children (God bless her). Some of her more famous descendants include FDR, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Mitt Romney. OK, enough of the history lesson, you can read the rest of it on Wikipedia yourself. Along most of its length, the Hutch is 2 lanes each way, with a few short stretches that expand out to 3. In the Bronx, the road is maintained by NYC, so it is well lit, relatively pothole free, mostly clean and is patrolled by the NYPD. The on-ramps are reasonably long as not to be dangerous. That all changes as it crosses into Westchester where it is maintained by NYS DOT since it is a parkway. No lighting through some curvy sections of New Rochelle and Scarsdale makes for some hairy driving at night with headlights from oncoming traffic in your eyes. Some of the on ramps are shorter than a summertime miniskirt and just as dangerous. Since the Hutch is toll free, some truckers wander on from local streets or the major interstate crossings. Some of the aforementioned bridges have really low clearances. 12 ft tractor trailer x 10 ft high bridge = 2 mile long traffic jam. Been there, done that, did the rubber necking. Happens every other week. If you haven't heard enough doom and gloom so far, here are some more tidbits. The reason they built the road to follow the river is because Mother Nature carved the route through the hills and valleys making it easy for engineers and construction workers. The flipside is that no one fools with Mother Nature's fury. When there's a big thunderstorm, the rivers rise up really fast and any road with the word "river" in it (Bronx River Pkwy, Saw Mill River Pkwy) soon becomes that river. The drainage on the Hutch is a little better than the other 2, so usually floods last, but the section going by Co-op city in the Bronx runs through a swamp (where it dumps into Long Island Sound) and you can see the water barely 3 ft from the road during high tide. After it rains, a pond collects in the median there. If you're in the left lane, cars on the other side will send over a tidal wave covering your windshield, blinding you until you get the wipers going on high. There is also a drawbridge past there and sometimes will open up causing another mile long parking lot. For the most part, the Hutch is a scenic drive on a nice sunny day, but underneath you just have to be aware of its pitfalls. By mistake I went to this "Parkway" not knowing that Parkways have a height restriction, the only sign is "passenger cars only" seriously? mine is a passenger car too but about 11 feet high, not a cargo vehicle. Sign should be a very prominent big sign with a "Height Limit" and the the "Diamond" yellow sign with the height limit in the center, no, newyorkers think of themselves as the inventors of the world, no wonder so many truckers hit your low bridges. I was lucky to realize early and exited the Hutchinson River Parkway on time not to hit a low bridge. With 40 dollars from the 48 I paid to go across the GWB you sure can upgrade your signs and avoid costly repairs to your aging infrastructure but you are busy making money and more money that you dont even have the time to think how to make a good sign. I Read an article on how you guys after too many truckers hitting low bridges decided to change the license plates for low vehicles and expected that "only passenger cars" would drive on the Parkways, had no effect because truckers from out of town would still drive into the parkways unaware of plate restrictions, lol! the only thing you need to do is install a UNIVERSAL yellow diamond shaped sign with the number 10' and everybody will know that the limit is 10 feet duhh! or 8 or whatever the restriction is. On my way back from Massachusetts I took Interstate 84 had great views and saved about 110 in tolls but it is not about the money, it is signage. I have yet to find out if NYPD is sending me a ticket in the mail. You want to make sure everybody understands your laws? think of YELLOW SIGNS universal! a license plate does not direct traffic, comprende? it could have costed me a bundle of money but I understand that you make money by collecting from citations from those of us that are not familiar with your laws read more

So I'm browsing Yelp and I see a spot to review......a highway. Ok then. I've used this highway for years - drove up to where it turns into the Merritt and have gone down to the Whitestone Bridge. I've been using this since they had that annoying toll plaza here (has been removed for a long time) and there are times this parkway comes in handy and other times where it sucks and local roads and stop lights seem like a better bet. During morning and afternoon rush for several hours, going northbound from Pelham Manor to the Cross County Parkway (West), there will be annoying, pointless, and irritating traffic. All this because of a merging issue. You can blame 2 lanes all you want to and while that is also a little bit of a reason, for some reason in that same spot, merging is the main issue. Merging from the Cross County Parkway (East) onto the Hutch (South) is also the same level of annoyance. It's almost as if at least half the drivers out there have no earthly clue on how to merge. Ridiculous and a sure time waster. Also during the rushes, from about White Plains to Yonkers (going South) and from New Rochelle to White Plains can lead to heavy congestion. That could be easily blamed on being 2 lanes and many idiot drivers. The 2 lanes become 3 in some areas - Bronx on south and White Plains up north - and traffic moves a little better. Some spots don't have lighting for night driving, so you have the bright happy people in full effect whether they're oncoming or behind you. Trucks love to come onto this parkway with it's low bridges despite the many warnings and will then cause a traffic issue. Plowing during the winter months is a toss up. Heavy rains will flood the area in Mount Vernon. Depending on where you're going and when, this could also be a better bet than other highways/parkways leading to almost the same destination. I try to avoid using the Bronx River Parkway (from the Sprain and south) as much as I can and the 95 (New Rochelle to the Throgsneck)) can be treacherous. Depending on where in White Plains you're going, this could also be a better bet than the Sprain. So yeah, there you have it. Most who will even read this will know what I'm referring to with at least some of what I typed. Whether you agree with me or not, this parkway does have it's benefits and can be very convenient for local travel. read more

This parkway basically runs from the Bronx Whitestone Bridge thru the Bronx, up thru Westchester, New Rochelle, and then ends near CT. It starts from the Bridge as three lanes but the narrows to two lanes. It also gets pretty curvy as you head upstate. This highway also takes you to Orchard Beach and City Island too. read more

Being an Uber Driver from Upstate NY, I've only driven on these roads a couple of times, but every time I drive them, I always find that this multi-lane highway needs some maintenance (despite the maintenance they seem to be already doing, but not fast enough). Between all the potholes and washed out streets that make it hard to see the road, it's a buggy roadway. I like that the bridges are almost-17th century cobblestone and even the name is related to a Puritan that I actually can recognize. I came through this street twice today (once going to JFK airport and once coming back) and although my trip coming back seemed shorter on this roadway (Google Maps took me up onto this highway then lead me onto the Bronx River/Saw Mill Parkway/Taconic State Parkway versus the trip down taking me down I-684 and onto this highway), I always find room for improvement from this parkway/roadway/highway. People keep disobeying posted speed limits here and don't give a hoot who else is on the roadway. I got passed by so many cars even though People end up having to exceed the speed limit to keep up with the flow, and I just don't feel that this is right for this road and people should listen more. Maybe it's just me. I like it, yet I don't like it. Miss your exit and you'll be doomed. I didn't spot a single area on this roadway this past time (today) when there was any delay, and I ended up finishing/starting at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge. I'm careful, and that's all that really matters. read more

It's a pretty decent highway. I've used it for years and my only chief complaint is the crazy amount of traffic after exit 7.

the hutch as da bronx natives called the hutchinson river parkway was my go to road way from the whitestone bridge to westchester county (white plains ) for a bunch of years when i worked in queens and minus the tolls and a few upgrades it's not changed much over the years .from the bronx to westchester and connecticut it's a two lane parkway most of the route and cars still speed on curves and sharp exits and big ass rigs still cause problems by not following the no trucks signs which results in major delays and worst . the hutch leads to a bunch of highways once you reach the westchester line and you can expect a slow move when you pass pelham . at night some parts in westchester has no or poor lighting and if it rains or is foggy you better slow down and drive carefully . a good alternative when you need to get to white plains and don't have quick access to the bronx river parkway . the hutchinson river parkway gets you where you need to go just with a lower speed limit . read more
