It's been around since 1965, and had somehow escaped my attention since I started coming the the Iowa Great Lakes over 40 years ago. Forbes also has a substantial selection of beer and wine, along with some tempting baked goods (near the front counter). The butcher counter is in the back, and it didn't take long for Gayle and I to pick out a few thick and tempting top sirloin steaks (along with some seasoning). You do pay a little more here, but we really felt that we were in good hands. We also stopped by a nearby parked truck and bought some sweet corn from a local farmer. With that, plus some salad fixings and a charcoal BBQ, we were set for a delicious outdoor Iowa meal on what turned out to be a glorious summer evening. However, the steak turned out to be a little tough. Maybe a marinade step would have helped. All the same, we were a bit disappointed considering the price paid and the high previous praise. Maybe we'll have better luck next time with a similar cut or maybe some bacon wrapped fillets. On the other hand, we had some amazing burgers with their ground beef the next evening.

As we were past labor day and big game, we almost had the place to ourselves. We usually show up with a Subway sandwich and order a beer. This time around, we ordered one of their delicious Pizzas and washed that down with a Coco Stout for her and a Doppel Bock for me. We added an order of peanuts and a 6-pack of the Doppel Bock for me to carry home all the way to Nevada. That supplemented the Smoked Red and Octoberfest beer back in the fridge at the Lake Cabin.

Every Iowan beerfest I attend, I am always in search of the West O Beer tent. We popped in on our final night of vacation for a pint and some pretzel bites as the kiddos played out on their patio. Pricing was on par. Parking was a bit cramped, you can tell when the parking lot is full that the inside will be, too. You need to order at the bar. (They are closed on Monday, FYI.) We were seated fairly quickly considering the circumstances. They do not have menus. Waitress just said what the offerings were. Our table got a variety of nachos. Serving size is huge! Easily shareable. Market had some basic convenience and food items available for purchase. I think menus would be a nice touch even with limited items or at the very minimum a menu at the table, one of those smaller, stand up types that some restaurants always have at the table.

Bartender/waitress was very nice and the food was served quickly. The cheeseballs were ok and the wings were pretty good and well worth the price (20 wings for 5.75). Sodas/pop (lol) are served by the can and not a fountain which was ok by me. The wings came in 3 flavors BBQ, sweet Teryaki and buffalo. I personally like the buffalo best but the other two were pretty good also. I hear that their pizzas are pretty good on Friday nights and I will amend the review next time.
