What a gem! First off, I am a stout girl. The darker the beer; the better as far as I am concerned the the West O Cocoa Stout is the chef's kiss! Every Iowan beerfest I attend, I am always in search of the West O Beer tent. We popped in on our final night of vacation for a pint and some pretzel bites as the kiddos played out on their patio. Pricing was on par. Parking was a bit cramped, you can tell when the parking lot is full that the inside will be, too. You need to order at the bar. (They are closed on Monday, FYI.) The pretzel bites were good, mustard definitely had some kick. My West O Cocoa was the perfect end to vacation. I'll pop in this brewery again when we are in town! read more

I was here last week and have been consistent in stopping in whenever I'm visiting the Iowa Great Lakes. Looking over my 2013 review (8 years ago), peanut shell containers are now provided, they've added a nice outdoor patio, and as my Son is now 25, there's no need to worry about minors any more. However, the parking lot could still use an upgrade. I remain a huge fan of Smoked Red and Coco Stout. I also tried the 6Foot6 IPA this time around, and stayed away from what seems to be an increased selection of fruit-bearing beers. I feel the same way about those as I do flavored coffee creamer. The guy at the bar was very nice, and was right there if I needed another pint or wanted to explore the merchandise a little more. Other constants include "ready to go" jenga stack, comfortable seating, nice light, and the ability to bring in outside food. West O beer is also available widely outside the brewery in many parts of Iowa. I also took a couple cans home and am enjoying one now as I write this update. read more

Service was very good! Beer selection is awesome and unique. The pizza menu presented some eclectic combinations. We chose one that had Gouda and arugula. The crust was perfectly chewy and charred. However, the cheese was not melted. The shredded Gouda was still in its shredded form and was not appetizing as it was at room temp, not warm and gooey. Tried the pizza for the first time-it was pretty good and better than any of the other local pizzas. It's primarily a brewery, so there's a large selection from which to choose. You can also select a flight of choice. It is loud, so holding a conversation is difficult at best. Drawbacks: you bus your own table and they never get wiped down so they're a sticky mess. Order everything at bar counter. A lot of flies inside. Also, cheese, red pepper and oregano come in small packets. read more

Selection of beers was deceptive as there were many listed, but unless you like heavy bitter hops/IPAs or stouts you are very limited (2 sours, 1 fruity and no malty or marzen styles). The pizza was way over-priced and I had to move the toppings from 1/2 to the other in order not have most of each slice be just dough with a thin layer of sauce. I know some people like that style of barely covered pizza, and if you do, you'll be happy here because the quality of what I got was very good, but as I said, it was way over-priced. read more

West O is an unpretentious microbrewery. I'm not a big beer drinker but I had a sip of my friends Pale Ale. It was a dark Pale Ale and I liked it. I had a glass of Pinot Noir from Swan Lake Winery. It was pleasantly light, not overly dry like many Pinot Noirs can be. No food is offered but there are buckets of peanuts in the shells everywhere and you shuck them, eat them, and throw the hulls on the floor. There was no band playing or any kind of live music but the piped in music was fun 70s and 80s stuff. There was a tall set of wooden blocks to play Jinko. My friend and I played two rounds and it was good old-fashioned fun. Prices on the drinks were reasonable about $6 each. It had a lively atmosphere. I think the only downside was it didn't really carry food. Some sliders and nachos would have been nice to have available. read more

West to WEST O, the beer was great! I chose the Blue Canoe beer & learned later they were donating part of the proceeds to a local cause! Love that! They had plenty of seating, & a beautiful patio! I was able to expierence West O for the 1st time and had a good time here. We stopped here, as it was at the end of the Okoboji Oktoberfest bike ride, a good place to end a bike ride. One of perks on this day was free beer for the riders/Oktoberfest crowd, so that was great for us. I like that they also had free shelled peanuts for everyone. I have enjoyed their beers in the past and their oktoberfest and ipa that day were very tasty. The place was super busy that day and had a great fun crowd. Will have to make a trip back when it's much calmer to try more of their good craft beer. read more

Place is awesome and beer is world class. They won a gold medal at GABF but they are so cool they barely mention it. My favorite place to go with my Dad when I visit him. Staff is great, atmosphere is perfect casual. If you want to visit a taproom that makes locals, visitors, and people of all ages feel welcome and comfortable then go here, have an amazing beer, but a T-shirt, and let the rest of the country know that Iowa is making some of the best beer and serving it in one of the best spots. read more

We showed up on a Saturday afternoon in the dead of winter (2/22/14) and expected it to be pretty quiet but we were wrong. The place was 3/4 full (about 20 people) and the beer was flowing! Speaking of the beer the line up was a Pale Ale which was very solid and perfectly balanced with a clean finish. Next was the Smoked Red, beautiful red color and smokey aroma with a balanced malty versus smokey flavor, this beer would pair well with some BBQ but I could see it getting old after the first couple. Third we tried the Pilsner, again this beer was spot on to style. Clean, crisp, clear and refreshing, I could drink this all day. For our next round we tried the 10ft 10 (10.10% ABV Double IPA) this beer came highly recommend but it was the first beer I would call just average. Great hop bitterness but it has a very boozy finish/aftertaste that I did not care for. I know, I know this is a 10% beer what was I expecting? Next we sipped on their Pumpkin Spice beer, I am usually not a huge fan of pumpkin spiced beers but this was good. Again though I couldn't stomach more than one or two in a sitting cause the flavors would tire my palette too quickly. Finally we finished our trip with their newest brew the CocO Stout. This one was delicious, a very smooth creamy stout with a nice chocolate character that wasn't over done like a lot of chocolate stouts out there. As for the tap room it is really nice and we enjoyed the free peanuts and the oversized Jenga they had for people to play. We will have to visit again when summer rolls around and take in the whole Okoboji experience. read more

Admittedly, I was surprised to see what appears to be a sleepy town out in the midwest would have a really impressive microbrewery. The quality of the brews my friend and I had were top notch. I just wish I had gotten to sample other items on draft as well. Complimentary peanuts were available for us to snack on, and while there isn't a kitchen within the establishment, there is a food truck outside that sold tacos. Newly opened West O is off to a great start. My family and I dropped by for an afternoon draft July 4th weekend and really enjoyed the place. The industrial interior was great and they have numerous televisions broadcasting sports. If you're hungry there is a food truck adjacent, or just munch on free peanuts. I must admit the brewery tour ran a little long, but it was great to see how much passion the brewmaster has for his craft. I tried a smoked red ale, and it was absolutely delicious. My wife, who favors hops, ordered the 10.5% alcohol double IPA. After sampling even I, who strongly dislikes hoppy beers, enjoyed the flavor. It was nice to see the clientele were visibly excited about the place. And the servers were incredibly friendly. My one suggestion... reorganize and pave the parking lot. read more

This was a fun beer stop after RAGBRAI day. Our group met up here and we tried a variety of their handcrafted beers. Everybody at our table was pleased with their choices! Would love to try this place again on a "regular" day where full menu and beer flights available. As most restaurants do during RAGBRAI, they limited menu choices to serve crowds. New brewpub was worth checking out. They had 5-7 in-house brews on tap, including their popular Red IPA which I didn't try. Their Imperial IPA was mighty tasty though. The vibe in here is a bit metallic at first but it quickly warms up with friendly servers, sometimes live music, and meeting other patrons who are kicking back in the Boji. And who doesn't love throwing peanuts on the floor just because? Only downsides are their growlers and merch were pricey, and more proximity to the water would be a plus but after a few brews it doesn't matter so much. read more
