Spent nearly $200 on groceries. Put them in the car, then sauntered over to the grill set up outside the door. It took at least five minutes for anyone to notice me waiting. I ordered a cheeseburger and a can of soda. The warm cans of soda were resting in a tub of lukewarm water. There were no napkins. The patio door was locked, so there was no place to sit down. The incident made me grumpy. So after I had finished my overpriced burger, I went back to the point of sale and complained. I politely suggested to the grill cook, Bryan, an Assistant Manager, that they had a customer service problem. I detailed it (lukewarm soda, lack of napkins, and a locked patio). Acting like a jackass seventeen-year-old, he said they did not have a problem. He did not accept the problem , Instead he denied there was one... He did not apologize and instead escalated his unprofessional manner. Whatever happened to the HyVee slogan "a helpful smile in every aisle"? I like the bakery and the meat departments. They both have a wide selection of quality products. My only complaint is they love to constantly rearrange isles. It's like a scavenger hunt. So much so that sometimes the employees are not sure where things are. read more

Our go-to neighborhood Hy-Vee. Typically everything we need is in stock, though there have been a couple of times we wanted some deli items and they have been sold-out. We typically go the Aisles Online route to avoid those impulse purchases that ALWAYS happen when you shop Hy-Vee. 4/5 because the pharmacy seems to be slammed at all times. They could have a full staff behind the counter and there's always a line. Clean store. Ample parking. Starbucks inside is a bonus. read more

Because as a mom of two young kids, grocery shopping is like torture. (At this age, if they're not in the cart-- they're touching things, roaming and even running away giggling possibly breaking things or getting lost...) While I've been in this location plenty of times (it was my location of choice in college, in fact) I don't frequent the brick and mortar often or by choice anymore. I have a yearly membership to have my groceries delivered on my doorstep as many times a week as I need (just so long as the total of purchases are $30 or more.) Folks, this is a game changer. There have been a few times that my personal shopper has really dropped the ball with OBVIOUSLY rotten cantaloupe or old bacon... or my delivery man has broken a few eggs. But a quick email later-- it is rectified. Whether its new produce dropped off within hours of my complaint, or a gift card apologizing for any inconvenience. BEST. CUSTOMER. SERVICE. EVER. I grocery shop at least once a week, if not twice. I'd gladly pay $1 each time to have it conveniently delivered to my house and avoid the hell that is grocery shopping with kids. Plus, I impulse buy less. Stay on budget more often. Totally utilize sales and fuel saver specials. And I ALWAYS get everything on my list. Hy Vee is pretty standard Iowa fare but this one really stands out from the rest. Kinda like a Swedish model in Wisconsin... It's just a lot better. This store comes with a much larger selection that includes Whole Food type products as well as Club Room for private events. I went to there ordered chicken fried rice one with vegetables and one without vegetables Now this was a major discussion for them they really couldn't get it out one person assured me they understood. So I got my food and made a major mistake. I didn't check it before i left. Yes you guessed it both of them had vegetables, so now my kids won't eat it. I recently moved to Iowa City from Seattle, and one of the big selling points for Iowa City, no joke, was this store. A couple years ago I was diagnosed with a bunch of food allergies including gluten and cow dairy. I was blown away at their health food section that was full of more allergen-friendly food I could eat than any store in Seattle, or even a few of them combined. Who knew Iowa City is more progressive than Seattle? A full aisle (both sides) of shelf-stable food, a full aisle of refrigerated foods, and a full aisle of frozen foods. And they're all conveniently together so I don't have to search for fresh bread in one section, frozen bread in another part of the store, soy creamer in another part of the store, etc. The only specialty food they don't carry that I "need" is goat yogurt. I recently traveled back to Seattle for a visit and forgot how hard it was to find allergen-friendly food there. I was seriously missing my Waterfront Hy-Vee! Update: The Market Grille has tons of allergy and gluten free options, too! The pharmacy is also amazing. I called in my refill since I was going to be out of town, and went to pick it up the night before to be told that it was out of stock. They called around and found a nearby location that had it, drove to pick it up and bring it back to their location that night so I didn't have to cancel my plans (trivia night in the Market Grille) and drive around. It was 100% offered by them and I didn't even ask them to help me out (it was my fault I waited until last minute to refill it), but they went above and beyond. read more

Seriously . . . I am starting to LOVE the Hy-Vee Cafe. It might be the only satisfying and well-priced place to eat breakfast in Iowa City. You can get eggs, toast, bacon, and amazing hashed browns for like $5.50, and it is fast and the servers are nice and efficient. Why would I go to IHOP or ESPECIALLY the Hamburg Inn when I can go to the Hy-Vee cafe for the same food and an all-around less irritating experience?? Also. In the summer, when they have the BBQ from St. Louis on the weekends--pulled pork, etc--it is AWESOME. Better than either of the BBQ places in town. And when the have the Hy-Vee cookout in the summer? Best thing ever. Once, right when I moved to Iowa City, they had a customer appreciation cookout and gave everyone a free hot dog, chips, and soda. Hyvee recently opened their Market Cafe at this location. Food quality and variety is very good, and the have a corporate sit down menu as well. Great stop for a decent low cost meal! Service was a bit slow, but they seem to be going through first opening jitters. If you are in a hurry through IC, much better option than the very limited options in this part of the backroads. read more

Nothing spectacular or especially bad about this place. . Big box stores aren't the best for people with social anxiety, I try to keep that in mind while rating and reviewing. Most workers still seem to follow the old 'a smile in every aisle ' mantra, and this particular Hyvee never seems to be out of stock on anything I want to buy. Your surfing the web for great shopping area and come across Hy-vee and you think to yourself what kind of deal will I be getting there? Shopping is best done at Hy-vee, and that's a fact. The price here is very reasonable. The food is a moderate for everyday people to afford. For example the veggie price range from $2 to $20, depending on what vegetable and the amount bought. This is a benefit because with affordable food, you will be able to spend on other things. Also, feeding a big family isn't as expansive. The Customer service here is also great. The staff here is always friendly and always give a helping hand. This is important for a good business, because friendly people are easier to get along with. That is a lot of help because the more you understand each other the easier to communicate so you get the help you need. That would also concluded that the business cares about you. Although, the staff have a lot to do and so are very busy. The checkout line are very long and the customer service is not always available and ready to help. This is true because Hy Vee is a big business but right after helping another customer be sure that you will be next. My wife and I wanted to grab something quick for lunch and ended up at Hy-Vee. The selection was great and the food was good and inexpensive. The both of us ate lunch for less than $15 and had enough food to take some to go. This is one of the nicest Hy-Vee's around. It is a newer building that has been very well maintained. Fresh food, huge selection, crazy deals! Unlimited bloody marys and mimosas on sundays for 9 bucks! Service is great when you sit at the bar (James and Jacob are wonderful).
