Dave and his crew at Hyack Excel Tire saved the day! We drove up from California in our brand new car to spend the holidays with out family here in Vancouver. Two days ago, the tire pressure in our right rear wheel was low. After filling and checking again overnight, we did indeed have a slow leak. We went to one of the larger tire shop chain stores, and they found a screw that had lodged near the inside edge of the tire. They said that it was in an unpatchable section of the tire, and we had to replace the tire. After taxes, it would have been $550! The major cost was in the tire, so we figured we would get the tire done closer to my in-law's place in New West so that we could just drop off the car for the day, then pick it up after it was done. We found Hyack on Yelp, and quoted a slightly lower price for the job. I brought the car in so that they could inspect it in-person. Dave took a look at the screw in the tire, and he said, "I think I can patch this." He said that he's seen this type of screw before (must be common occurrence with all the construction in New West or something) and that these were typically short, so the puncture was probably small. Dave said that he would have his guys take the tire off and look to see if they can patch it. If they couldn't, we would go with Plan B and order the new tire. We left the car for a couple hours and then Dave called and said he was able to patch it. As he suspected, it was a short screw, and the puncture on the inside was actually in the flat part of the tire where he could secure a patch. All together, $45 for the patch! Definitely saved us from replacing a brand new tire with another brand new tire! How is that for honesty? I would absolutely recommend Hyack for their reasonable prices, honesty and quick turnaround. And for the person who thinks that he can get a patch for $10, good luck. Maybe if you bought your tires from that shop, they would do it for a discount, but $10 hardly covers the labor. $45 was very reasonable. The large tire chain was going to charge us $56 and the dealership $150. Thanks Hyack! You saved our trip! read more

Once again Hyack saved the day for me. Yesterday my car started making a strange loud thumping noise when driven over 20KPH with the front end shaking wildly. I called Hyack this morning they are really busy "but bring it in anyway". I took it in slowly at 11am. At 4 pm I got the call that an engine mounting bolt had snapped (special part) old bolt needs drilling out hole re-tapped and all reassembled. They will have the new part in tomorrow and I can pick the car up around noon. 6 out of 5 stars. read more

He'll give you an honest opinion and in one case sent me to a different shop (muffler) as he knew they'd be able to do the same job for much less given their expertise in the area. This is THE place to take your vehicle for repairs. Outstanding service, very honest and fair, great communication and mechanics who know their stuff and care. It's so hard to find places that have integrity and honesty and are good at their craft. In my case it was a fairly straight forward fix, a slow leaking brake line on an old pickup truck that sees very infrequent use, but when I do need it it is critical. I phoned them in the late afternoon after I discovered the problem and they immediately instructed me to bring it in the next day first thing in the morning. Now that's service! A booked an appointment to get an oil change done on my vehicle for the following Tuesday at 10am. The lady told me it would take an hour and I would be on my way. The following Tuesday I dropped off my vehicle early, confirmed with the front desk lady that this will be done on time, proceeded to wait for two hours, returned and they hadn't even started my vehicle. It is frustrating because I booked a half day off work to have the service completed as I need my vehicle for work. On top of that the lady was rude and acted as if they didn't care that they were losing my business. I trust that they do good work but customer service is an important part of that; they have now lost myself and brother as customers. read more

I have been having my cars repaired at Hyack Tire for years and their service and integrity are exceptional. Last time my car was being serviced there Dave called me and let me know one of his mechanics had a mishap and put a scratch in the back of my car. I know crap happens - but how it gets dealt with shows the real metal of who you are dealing with. Dave was up front, very apologetic, took full responsibility and told me they would have it repaired at any body shop of my choice. It was dealt with immediately, and Dave attended at the body shop before I picked it up to personally inspect it to ensure it was fixed right. This is the first time I have been to Hyack Tire, it's right beside Douglas College in New Westminster. I have a tire which was leaking air since I put winter tires on and I had to get it fixed before the weather gets too cold. Their service is wonderful. I didn't have an appointment, it was just a walk in and they managed to attend to me. Their service was speedy and the technician knew exactly what he was doing. I was in and out of the place within 30 minutes. I was initially quoted about $27 plus taxes but the kind lady gave me a discount and charged me $20 plus taxes. That was really nice since I'm a student maintaining a car with a part time job. On the way home I passed by Kal Tire, stopped to get a quotation and the gentleman there said it would be about $33 plus taxes for each tire. I sure am glad I went to Hyack. I normally do not give reviews, good or bad, but this experience warrants one. Earlier this month, I made a 10am appointment to change my oil (which I purchased on my own, since it was synthetic, and I did not want them to have to order it). I arrive and I am told that it will take about an hour to fix my car. I come back after an hour and a half, and ask what is the timeline. The agent at the front tells me that she is not sure if they have started on my car and the person that is supposed to be working on it is on lunch, but she believes they have not started to work on it. I have a 1pm appointment to be somewhere, so I give it another hour. At this point it is 12:30 and they have still not begun working on my car. Mind you this was just for an oil change and a basic checkup. Right as I go back in to tell them to cancel the appointment, a mechanic begins to work on my car. I ask him how long he thinks it will be and his reply is: "it will not be any quicker if you stand around". At this point I am appalled, so I leave, cancel my 1pm appointment, and expect to get my car back working within 20-30 minutes. I wait in the waiting room, and wait until 1:50pm to get my keys back. I ended up missing my 1pm appointment, and coming late to my 2pm appointment. Had I known this was to take four hours for an oil change, I would have never booked with this company. No one at any point until the last moment when they asked for payment even acknowledged that this was a long wait. I did not say anything, as I was in shocked leaving, so I figured this would be the avenue to go. I was charged over $50 for an oil change where I brought my own oil, my front light was not changed, which was the only thing I had brought up other than the oil, and worst of all, my car began to shake/rumble since then and has been progressively getting worse, and it has been two weeks since. The mechanic took his time to get the job done and was extremely abrasive. I have never ever had any experience like this in any customer service experience and will not be returning here again, which is a shame since I live only a few blocks away. read more

On most days this place is packed full of confused locals handing over money to these rip off artists. Being a recent new west local myself and like all other New Westies I was recommended by other locals I decided to give them a try (twice). For a simple oil change and they wanted $75 + taxes for a basic oil change on a Cobalt. I ended up going back to a different auto shop in burnaby and paid $55 taxes in and that included the extra $25 in Lucas oil additive I requested. Oh yeah that's extra so for me to get that oil change at Hyack it was $100 + taxes. The guy behind the counter said "he has to cover his charges..." Also, a customer was at the counter paying a bill for an alternator change (not sure what vehicle nor cared) and they were billing her over $700 for this, and she was all too happy to pay with a smile. I once had a flat tire from a nail and needed a simple tire patch done (this costs as low as $10 at the right shop) and they charged me $40 (I had no choice unless I wanted to put my stupid spare on). At any rate people please do not waste your hard earned money on these guys they are legit charging double of what most other honest shops charge. If these guys are supposed to be the local family mechianic shop feel for us New Westies then maybe they should start acting like it and charging realistic rates. read more

I get my winters/all-seasons taken on/off at Hyack Excel Tire. I have been going to them for about 7-8 years now, twice per year. I've also taken flats to them. They're great. Everyone is very friendly and at least in the case of one of the flats I took to them, honest. I was convinced I would need to replace the tire and accidentally let slip that I thought that when I dealt with them - but they just patched it. Saved me a bunch of money and the patch job it has held to this day, many years later. As a bonus and this may seem trivial, but you know how you go to a mechanic or auto-body shop and you ask them to call you when they're done because you've already read every magazine in their waiting area the last time you were there so you'd prefer to go off and do something more productive with your time? Seems like an easy enough, trivial thing to do. Except it's not. Hyack has never failed in this trivial task. My dealership where I get oil changes 3-4 times per year with all the fancy computer systems in place? They fail miserably at this no matter how many times I explicitly ask them to call me. Place I had my brakes done? Failed. It's hard for me to get excited about a tire shop and I feel a little weird giving them a 5-star "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" rating, but they deserve it. read more

Being new to the city I asked my daughter where she goes to get her car serviced. She quickly said Hyack Tire! I was booked for Monday and had to change my appointment date, no hassle, no problem. I met Kelly and was greeted with the warmest, welcoming smile. My work sheet was ready and I asked a few questions, one of which was tire age and wear. She immediatley asked the "tire guy" to check them for us, he came back and said:" yes, the tires were 2003 originals", As a pensioner I am always conscious of costs and I asked him to get me the best deal possible, he did that and more. I dropped off my truck at 830 as I work in the neighbourhood. Got a call at 11am telling me that my truck was ready. They did the work, quick and efficiently. David at Hyack Excel Tire was the calm amongst the storm yesterday. My partner made an emergency brake application that sent him sliding in the snow and right into a curb. Ruined two tires. David was very kind on the phone and took time to explain our options for new tires. He was very accommodating by fitting us in on an asap basis. When our tow truck vendor hadn't bothered to pick up our car by 5:30pm yesterday, I called David knowing he may be waiting on our car. He, again, was so kind and offered that we use his account with Mundies Towing, that he'd cover the tow charges and that we could reimburse him once we picked up the car with new tires...which was this morning!! I had a flat and suspected I was going to need a new set of tires.From my first phone call asking for a quote to the installation of the final product, Brian (owner) and his crew have been nothing but professional. When I called Hyack Tire, Brian patiently spent quite a bit of time on the phone with me before I even brought my car in to find me the best tire and the best price. We had to talk back and forth on the phone a few times and I became convinced that not only does this guy really know his tires, he's an honest and straightforward guy. When I came in to the shop, I noticed the wall full of "Reader's Choice" and other awards, the parking lot jammed full of customer's cars, as well as a hustling crew (who were also quite polite). It confirmed my suspicions that I had come to the right place. Brian took the time to show me the exact tires he would put on, inspected my tires personally and made an honest recommendation. Like a tire doctor, Brian ran through the possible treatment options, from a patch job to full tire replacement. Due to my circumstances I went with the full replacement, but I didn't feel pushed in any particular direction. He was reasonably priced and definitely took my budgetary concerns into consideration when recommending a tire. Since tires are such an important safety feature of a car, I felt like I needed to be careful and not just buy from anyone. I came here for some help to diagnose a steering wheel vibration problem. I put some used tires on at another shop and they said they balanced it. However I had vibration at high speeds on the highway. I went back to the original shop and they rebalanced it. Same problem. So I gave up for a couple months. Then, I was driving by hyack and decided to get a second opinion. Right when I went in they were very friendly and efficient. David listened to my problem and got my car into the shop right away. They rebalanced all my tires and found out that my back 2 tires were very off balance. The mechanic sat beside me to explain this to me. This shop is very honest and professional. I am always impressed and extremely satisfied with all my experiences at Hyack Tire. The service is professional and friendly, and their quotes are honest and fair. It's always nerve-wracking to visit a mechanic with an old 1992 VW Jetta as you worry the bill will be enormous. Every time I have gone to Hyack they have been forthright, fair and efficient with cost and their work. I trust them immensely and always leave extremely satisfied. I took my 2004 Cadillac into them to simply change the tires to my new set. They called back after a couple hours and said it was ready. I went to pick-up my car and the tech was outside fiddling with the TPMS (tire pressure monitoring sensor) calibration tool, still trying to reset my TPMS. They destroyed the sensor in one of my tires and claimed it was from road salt. The sensors and monitoring system were working just fine before they worked on it. I took the car into GM and they confirmed improper work on Hyack's part was the cause of the issue. Needless to say but... I will never take another vehicle to them, and I will recommend everyone steer clear of them. read more

Took my van here last year for an estimate on a brake repair. Around noon they called and told me it would about $600 to have the front breaks done. I told them to wait and I'd let them know as I was shopping around and that seemed high. Called back at four as I was going to take it elsewhere, but they told me they had already done it. Woman on the phone was incredibly rude about it too, I felt quite taken advantage of as I was forced to pay in full for the job. Very unhappy since I literally live five buildings away from this place and it would have been great to have them as my go-to. read more
