Such a cool place! There is so much space here that you can do so many things. Pack a picnic to accompany apple picking. Bring a frisbee or football (there is disc golf here too). Enjoy live music. Play horseshoes. So many things! I also noticed a hay ride to the apple picking area. Sometimes there are apples and assorted foods for purchase in the outdoor barn area. There are also beers on tap. Most importantly, Hyland offers up apple picking, pumpkin picking, and other produce as well. It is a great time for the young kids, or for a date with just adults. While the orchard itself was beautiful, the wedding night was definitely dampened by the absolutely obliterated male bartender. He was so drunk and loud and couldn't even walk straight. He was stumbling behind the bar and outside all night, yelling, stunk of booze, and ruined the end of our night with his unprofessional demeanor. How absolutely embarrassing for this place to allow this alcohol addict to "work" behind the bar in that state. There were children present and we tried our best to keep them away from this dangerous person. There was a female bartender with him trying to pretend he was fine and trying to hide his behavior but we could all see how absolutely black out drunk this older man was. While everyone was leaving at the end of the night, this man was outside stumbling and projectile vomiting in front of all the guests. How mortifying for him, but more importantly, for the bride. This place should be absolutely ASHAMED of itself for allowing this kind of conduct to represent the orchard. Never ever recommending this facility to anyone. TERRIBLE read more

We loved the place in Sturbridge when they had October fest and Rapscallion. Now it's a few beers on tap and pretty lifeless. Rapscallion moved and to be honest and fair? That isn't the same either. It's a pub now. Nothing spectacular. read more

Our extended family met here a few weeks ago to pick apples and celebrate a birthday. It was perfect! The live music was great. We parked ourselves under the large tent to share some snacks and birthday cupcakes. The kids rode the tractor to the orchard over and over again to keep picking delicious apples and the guests that chose to indulge enjoyed the brews available at the bar. There was a food truck with some delicious offerings (cash only unfortunately). It is a dog friendly place and our Shepkita had a great time meeting new friends and taking in the sights and smells. Definitely recommend as a wonderful place to just show up and enjoy time together in a big group of family and friends! read more

I absolutely love apple picking for about 5 minutes ... I can pick about 10 apples, eat one perfectly red one, and then I'm done. After that, walking around the orchard and fields is fine for a bit, but then I'm ready to bonk people with the apple picking pole, or lay down and nap. Hyland gives me plenty of other great distractions which I think are integral parts of a realllly great apple picking trip. Beer, petting zoo, cheap food, live music ... and did I say beer ??? Oh yea, and the apples are good, orchards pretty, etc. etc. The live music is under this really large wooden pavilion-structure-floating-roof-thing ... so a bit of a sprinkle is no biggie. What's more is that the live music is often quite great, like the "Drunk Stuntmen". The food is pretty decent fare, served at good prices. Burgers, dogs, and apple-y things. The Pioneer Beer brewed here is really good too, everything from Pale Ale to Stout! One thing that really peeves me is when quint, wonderful orchards and farms turn into amusement parks, charging admission, etc. (aka Lookout) ... Hyland is great in that they have free parking, entrance, animals, and music ... don't change, please! Altogether, it makes for a very happy and fun full day of entertainment. read more

Fifth star, since the owner himself did the tour! The Pioneer Brewing Company sits on a farm and is a magnificent study in a small brewer working to become a regional brewer. While their products didn't blow me away any more than some of the other New England brewers' products, I can say that it is a good enough product to make that transition. The owner, a friendly guy whose attitude and enthusiasm infected the tour group as a whole, talked as much about the logistics and business plan of running a brewery as making the beer. Being a guy who loves those things, it really resonated with me. Of note, the tours are on Sundays at 2, so plan accordingly. The bar the brewery is attached to was filled with locals, bikers and homemade pico de gallo. It was an oddly comfortable place, and one I'd recommend going to if you want to see beer made small-scale by a hardworking team. read more

The is a review just for the Pioneer Brewing Company brewery tour. First, an important note - during our tour the brewmaster mentioned that Pioneer is moving the entire brewery from their current 4,000 square foot space to a new 17,000 square foot space a little ways down the road on Main Street. The brewery tours take place on Sundays at 2PM. It's very informal. Pioneer has a big bar room which is an obvious hangout for locals. At around 2:15 the brewmaster gathered us up and took us on a quick tour of the three room brewery. The great thing about visiting such a small brewery is the quality and detail of the information from the brewmaster. In this case, the tour guide was not just the brewmaster but the owner of the whole company. He was informative and frank, he led a great tour. The three areas of the brewery are the brew house area where they begin the brewing process, the fermentation area where they age and then bottle the beer, and then the cold storage room which is where they keep their kegs, bottles, and kegs tapped up to the bar room. After the tour we armed up to the bar for some free samples. We tried 5 different kinds of Pioneer beer. They were pretty good - they all generally tasted similar to me, nothing stood out. Even the blueberry beer didn't have any knockout flavor notes but that's just me maybe. The orchards and grounds are really pretty and peaceful. A great place to spend an afternoon with friends or family. read more

We came here for a Wednesday Hump Day event and it was a perfect weeknight excursion ! The beer was great and the food truck had very nice cheese steaks and fried. The ambience is causal and the little "petting zoo" is very cute ! Definitely worth a stop on a warm summer Wednesday. read more

I knew I would love this place as soon as the party van pulled out of JP to take us there. Megan C. organized this amazing outing to Hyland Orchard and Brewery and I reccomend not only the place but renting a van/driver because it was only $30 per person for 20 of us, no worries about drinking and driving and was a sh*t ton of fun! The apple orchard is quaint! It's very small and you can pick about 15 different types of apples within feet of each other. Even though it was a gorgeous day and small place it didn't feel crowded at all. There is a kick ass band playing right next to the orchard- they seem to take requests if you ask loudly enough. The brewery has about 8 types of beer that you can buy inside and two types you can grab at the tent outside, by the band. The beer was fresh and yummy but stay away from the wine, far away. Food, drool. Not your typical apple orchard fare (see my previous orchard review) but a great apple crisp with ice cream is available as well as hot dogs, meatball subs, burgers etc. The best part- we played horse shoes with the locals! I had never played before and had a blast! I actually got a "ringer" which roused some applause. The people who work at the orchard were super friendly and gave us tips and just made us smile all afternoon- or was that the beer?? Anyway it was fun! There are also barn animals for those are dig that- goats and such. My review is slightly biased since I was pretty much drunk the entire time but I think that's the point- Collen N. called our trip "apple drinking." We also played some stick ball with fallen apples- watching those suckers explode is amazing. read more

I come here at least once every Fall for some family-friendly jamband festy time. I drink good beer, I pick apples, I observe tie-dye tarps and patchwork pants, I smell patchouli, I wiggle dance to songs that never seem to end, and I pet some cute farm animals. Those are my expectations, and they are met every single time. OK, so it's an apple orchard and beer brewery that sometimes hosts musical events. And also has llamas, goats and chickens. I'm sure in text it makes zero sense, but it somehow all comes together when you are there. I have never been here on just a normal day, and if I did, I'm not sure what my criteria would be, but for my purposes, Hyland is a DAMN good time! read more

This is really just for the Rapscaillon Tap room, since I didn't enjoy any of the other really exciting things that this place has to offer. The Taproom is pretty near, it's got giant picnic tables, and then some high tops around the edge. It's got pure standing room up at the bar. They have an excellent selection. It's a bit pricey, at 7 dollars for 4 samples but we ordered two and got the 2 beers we didn't pick for free. So I appreciate that. They have a wide range of beers from pale ales, to oyster stouts. All of their beers were pretty good, none of them I would turn down and some of them I absolutely wanted more of. Their blueberry, and their black ipa was delicious. You can bring your own food in, and they even have some chips and nuts for sale. Over all I'd absolutely go back, I wish I had tried the wine, and I would love to play some disc golf. read more

I obviously missed the point of this place. I don't see tours offered anymore, went for the Sunday music. Bar area that stunk of wart and bleach Music? Not to me WAY too hot, one window unit for the whole bar? Lots of overalls, beards and long hair ponytails...NO women The Indianapolis quote from Jaws behind the bar is cool. I asked why it was there, the keep told me "Cause it's fucking COOL!" Can't argue with that. Meh...just buy their beer at the local packy, save yourself the trip. read more

We just got married there over this past weekend. The location is beautiful! Everyone talked about how it perfect. It was also so much fun with tractor ride up the hill, yard games, and fire pit everyone kept busy. Our wedding was a blast! Also everyone working was nice friendly and helpful. They all had a smile on their face. Can't wait to go back, visit and celebrate some anniversaries there. Thank you guys so much! Update: Doe the contact person for all weddings also did a great job! I had no idea this was here until last summer and instantly fell in love. I grew up in the area but now reside in the Metrowest, and I'm VERY happy to make the ride over to relax at this great place on a nice day. I came in during the summer, wandering into the tasting room to meet some family and have some GREAT beer. $5 a pint of fresh microbrew? Heck yeah! The beers are great, fresh, and have some good kicks - the Red Nitro Stout still excites me, and the Blueberry Ale had a nice spice to it you wouldn't normally find. The pavillion is gorgeous for a warm day - hang outside, enjoy the sunshine and smell of the farm, the scenery... seriously, this is where happy happens. Hopefully I can get in there with my band this summer to gig there, as well! Best of both worlds! read more

Went here for a private function, and drank a bunch of Pioneer Brewery beers. They have a lot of IPAs and pale-like beers, but they all taste pretty darn good! We had a group of about 50 people and we fit easily. There was a spread of food and the space was big enough to eat, mingle, drink, and be merry. If you're in the neighborhood and want to taste local brews, I highly recommend stopping here! read more

I can't say enough good about this place. My girlfriend and I came here for Apple picking, unfortunately they were over picked for the day. However they were selling bushels of apples so we bought one of those. They had live music playing in their pavilion and a fire in the fire pit. There were families running around and having fun and goats and mini horses to pet. A nice selection of pumpkins and the bar was open. So of course I tried a little bit of everything. The customer service was top notch and the place is very clean and well kept. I will most certainly be returning here and would also suggest this place to anyone. Five stars all the way. read more

There's tons of cool stuff to do (apple picking, disc golf, live bands, and bond fires.) I took the misses her for apple picking and It was super fun. They had an Old John Deere Tractor taking you to and from the apple trees. They also have a food truck/restaurant there and the food was okay. One thing that I do need to mention is that parking at this place is hellacious!! Depending on the day it will take you some time to find a spot. They don't have apple cider donuts which is odd not to have. However, their beers are to die for. read more

We fell madly in love with this place within about two minutes of arriving, and our affection grew and grew the longer we were there. It's one of those places that just seems so special to me that I kind of don't want to review it at all, because I want to keep it a secret--but because it's so deserving, I feel I must give it a review (and a 5-star one, at that). There's all kinds of fun stuff to do, most of which we didn't even do, but we might do some of those things (apple picking, disc golf, events, etc.) some other time. What we DID do is hang out at the Hyland pavilion and drink delicious beer, chat with cool local people, and . . . smoke cigarettes. Yes, you read that right: it's not really a bar, it's just a big slab of concrete with a roof and no walls on the sides--it's basically just part of the field, and you're allowed to smoke. So you can sit at the bar and drink a beer and smoke a cigarette At The Same Time like a civilized person instead of always having to put a coaster on your damn beer and go outside. For those who appreciate such luxuries, well, it was like a little oasis in a vast Massachusetts sea of "will you please watch my drink and make sure nobody puts a roofie in it while I go outside for a smoke" silliness. We were taking photos of ourselves to brag to our friends about how awesome a time we had. THEN we figured out that the Rapscallion tap room was ALSO open -- I mean, this was at like 7:00 p.m. on a Sunday, so we really figured we were out of luck on finding ANYTHING to do over there, and after we found the pavilion, we didn't even think there would be MORE to do -- and we went over and had beer in the tap room and met the brewer. The brewer was super cool and gave us a tour and made us feel incredibly welcome. The BEER was delicious, by the way. Seriously, you can see why I almost don't even want to post this review, right? This is the sort of place I want to keep to myself. But it all just rocks so much that I must give it props. read more

Def a great time! I came for apple picking, but quickly realized that it was more of a destination than a pure Apple Orchard. With that said- the atmosphere was awesome, great people watching and nice to get a beer and sit for some cool tunes after picking some apples! There is alot of different things to do here, and I would def recommend this place. The only thing I would warn is that there are no markings on the apple trees- so basically you have no idea what your picking. You just have to try them out to see if you like them. All other places I have picked apples had the apples clearly marked so I know what I was picking. But I will still be back next year, and will prob bring some friends that are tired of the "amusement park" places most Apple Orchards have become these days..... read more

They allow dogs!!! Also, we have yet to find a bad beer on the menu. They have live music most weekend evenings and a very relaxed atmosphere. There is nothing better than grabbing a beer, listening to music and chillin with your dog!! Love this place! read more

Just went this past Saturday to the Hyland Orchard and Brewery for the fourth annual "Apples A Go Go" trip with about 20 of my friends. Hyland is such a hidden gem I almost don't want to review it. If you are a parent this place is perfect. It has beer and wine for you and a petting zoo, tractor rides, as well as short trees that you don't need a ladder to pick for the kiddies. If you are like all my friends and arrive without any children Hyland is also perfect. Beer, wine, live bands, and no crowds. Given the lack of people you aren't bombarded with kids running everywhere like you would be at Honey Pot in Stowe. Years past the orchard sold food however popcorn and ice cream novelties were the only food being sold this year. When I asked about purchasing some food one of the owners informed me that they weren't selling food this year but we could order take out from the pizza place down the road. We had 6 large pizzas delivered to us and ate and drank our beer sitting on the grass in the orchard. This place is one of my favorite spots in New England. read more

Very fun! A great place to go apple picking and seeing local music . They also have goats you can pet and a little play place for kids.They also have a brewery and I'm pretty sure they have hay rides in the fall. Hyland orchards is very good for groups. Went for the disc golf. Has a cool outdoor bar. Did not stop by not sure if you can get the same beers inside as out. Recently change to the Rapscallion Brewery. Lost a disc and they called back that was great. Went for the opening of apple picking but not very busy. Went a second time during a New England Disc competition, was bummed that there really wasn't a mention of it on the site. read more

Looking forward to another fall at Hylands...you can't go wrong with live music and fresh beer brewed on site. I like the re-orientation of the stage to get the music out to the people relaxing on the hillside. With barn-yard animals and apples to pick it's very family friendly too. read more

this place has an identity crisis: are they a brewery/bar and want to attract brewery aficionados or are they a family-oriented orchard/pick your own/hayrides/animal petting place? they day i went it was ALL of the above. music was too loud. had to scream in order to talk to the woman selling bags for PYO apples. $15 for a bag of apples and a tractor ride to the orchard? highway robbery. tractor wasn't working so we had to wait for that. driver said "you might be walking back..." again: NO THANKS! not with a tired kid in tow. had to wait for 2 passes of the tractor to get back again. we were just waiting for other folks to get off so we could get on (mid-orchard). but each time the driver stopped there, he undersold that part of the orchard so folks didn't want to get off. i should have just walked back. animals seemed well-cared for but there were only 2 goats and one alpaca; no vending machines to dispense feed. kids were just ripping up grass to feed them. only one sign when you drove in. after that, there was NO direction. no way was i going into a poorly lit barn/bar with my young daughter to get information. bottom arrow on street sign was funny. that was the only good thing about the visit! plenty of other places to spend my hard-earned money. read more
