They say don't meet your heroes, but sometimes that statement doesn't follow through. Also, when you're talking about a brewery, perhaps the statement doesn't match up correctly. What I'm trying to get at here is Tree House Brewing Company, for any avid beer drinker who knows their stuff, lives up to all the hype and wonder that it is. My wife and I visited Tree House last weekend and had a fantastic time. I'm just sad it's over. Can we go back? Now? First, I gotta give the wife a shoutout because it was her idea to swing up to the OG spot of Tree House in Charlton, MA when we were going to be near-ish by. Between not being a beer drinker and also being currently pregnant, my wife normally has minimal drink options at a place that makes its name in alcohol, but Tree House is all encompassing when it comes to liquid love. Beer, spirits, seltzers, sodas, and coffee can be found here all under the moniker of Tree House. Plus this place is so massively wonderful in seating indoors and outside that it can be a place to take a few small cherubs as you partake in the wonder of it all. Something to note for the future. The true wonder for me comes in two waves. Wave 1 is just the sheer amount of beers available from Tree House right on tap. Two bars split you up between the go-to IPAs and stouts while the other bar has more traditional lager and beer options. There aren't flights at Tree House, but no staff member (all were so friendly and welcoming) will stop you from tasting a whole bunch of brews before landing on your full pour. Wave 2 is the can ordering and pick-up. If you're like me, when you catch Tree House cans around the area at a beer distributor, it can be like seeing a unicorn. You grab them and you'll pay any price to obtain a few because you know how coveted they are and how tasty they're going to be. If you're not aware of this, it might amaze you to watch people take handcarts full of beer off to their car. For the selection and price, this is a must...well, I got 20 cans (and some coffee cans too) so maybe not a full handcart for me, but it's so tempting to not want to. Beyond those waves of wonder you'll just find everything you want at a brewery and more. Tree House swag runs rampant and you could easily walk out with Tree House garb from head to toe via shirts, stickers, keychains and stemware. As mentioned, the setup is so stellar with Adirondack chairs spread around overlooking the whole Tree House campus. Nothin' is better than that, except maybe their pizza. Come during the week and you can experience some really stellar slices at their slice shop. This is apparently closed on the weekends, but food trucks take their place so you'll definitely still find some grub to offset the hops. You'll win at Tree House no matter what. Overall, Tree House Brewing Company is everything you hope to get from a brewery with aspects you might not even expect. I mean, I probably should mention I came on a Friday right at opening and experienced all of this wonderment early on so perhaps, as some report, later on a Friday evening or a weekend day might result in a more crowded feel, but I'll vouch for a during the week trip if you can make it happen. Because once you stroll up and get a whiff of what is being brewed inside of Tree House, you'll know it truly is your beer hero...even if it's not a person. read more

5 - I'd try to convince my wife to drive an hour just to come here. Skip to the end to see my rating scale. This is a simple one for me to rate. My big three for breweries are dog friendly outdoor seating, availability of good food, and high quality beers. Tree House is easily three for three. Let me put it to you this way - if you're a dog lover and beer enthusiast, this place is like Disney World. They even have maps of the hiking trails available on the property. Have a beer, take a hike, have a beer, get dinner from one of the several food trucks, have a beer, be happy. I'd literally try to convince my wife to plan a vacation around Tree House in Charlton even though it's an 8 hour drive from my home. Tree House is New England's favorite brewery for a reason! They have a plethora of different brews for all palettes and a revolving draft that keeps things fresh and new! We love going in the winter when the outdoor pavilion becomes an additional bar filled with lights and heat lamps. TH continues to be my favorite New England brewery. So many styles that are all really well done. Having multiple locations has helped tame some of the lines but it continues to be busy in Charlton, especially on weekends so I try to avoid going there on weekends. Hint: this time of year is actually a great time to visit their sandwich location, especially if you can catch a decent weather day. The real reason for the update is that they now have pizza in Charlton! At the time of writing this, it's only by the slice and only M-Th. They lack the capacity to feed the masses at this time but I'm guessing the goal is to ramp up to full production eventually. Unfortunately, my slice last night was not the best they can do. Undercooked, slightly cold and a little chewy, and no char. I look forward to when it's hot and fresh, but for now, at least it's a start!! read more

Visited Tree House Brewing Company while in Sturbridge. The atmosphere was energetic and well-organized, and the operation runs like a well-oiled machine. I first visited these guys when they were operating out of a small barn, and seeing the evolution to this 53,000 sq ft, $18.5M facility is seriously impressive. They follow a "direct-to-consumer" model -- selling everything right out the front door -- and they've mastered it. I've been here many times over the years and go whenever I have the opportunity, which says everything. Tried some of their standout beers -- King Julius is the gold standard, consistently ranked among the best beers in the world. Their flagship Julius is just as impressive, with massive notes of mango and peach -- incredibly well balanced and executed. There are usually food trucks on site, which adds to the experience -- you can enjoy a fresh pour while picking up your take-home haul. I am always astounded by places like Tree House Brewing in Charlton. This place feels like it's practically in the middle of nowhere, and when you pull into the entrance you know you've made it to a special place. It was definitely the largest brewery that I've been to. When you walk in you are greeted by an enormous open room that is beautifully designed. There are a few separate bars that serve different drinks as they do many, many beers, cocktails, and even roast their own coffee. There are many communal tables in the space as well as a big gift shop where they sell lots of merchandise. The background to the whole space is their massive brewing factory that makes the many beers they have on tap. You can also take home cans of any of their drafts if they have them. When you go up to any of the counters you show your ID and they give you a wristband, so you won't need to show it again. The servers were all very cheery and seemed like they loved their jobs there. They let you sample whatever you would like, but sadly they don't do flights. Personally, this was the only downside here for me because I prefer to have many smaller pours rather than a large glass of anything. I am a lover of a good stout. This place is known for them. They had at least a dozen to choose from. I went with the "Hold On To Sunshine" which is hands down my new favorite stout. It's incredibly rich as it's like drinking dessert, but the best chocolate/peanut butter dessert you've ever had. I also got the "Human Condition" which has a strong toasted coconut flavor. After getting quite tipsy on beer I sobered up with a cup of their delicious coffee. Along with taking home some beer we also took home some of their coffee beans. What a great place! read more

I absolutely love this place, and I'm not a beer drinker. The staff here are so friendly and so knowledgeable on the beer they're serving. Their customer service is also top-tier. The place is always packed, yet there is ALWAYS a place to sit, which I LOVE! If you're gonna have a huge parking lot, then have enough seats to fit everyone in the lot! Love it. Visited Tree House Charlton for the first time last weekend--frequently visit the Tree House in Saratoga Springs and wanted to try out this location. Absolutely beautiful indoor and outdoor seating, great environment, and great drinks. Beers for days! This is like a Disneyland for beers with lines separated by beer type with a plethora of options in each. The indoor area is massive with plenty of seating, a view of the work in action, and live music. Since I went during the colder months, we didn't stay outside much, but there's plenty of seating outside with fire pits and a view of the forest. The staff is great with giving information, recommendations and hooking up a sample here and there if you're deciding. Definitely grab some of their canned beers on the way out to bring home. There is so many nice seating outside or inside. The line does get long for drinks. They have variety of different drinks, including beers, cocktails, seltzers coffee so there is something for everyone. They also have a lot of different merchandise that you can purchase or beers that you can buy to bring home. Well, my last review of this place and first time visiting was over 6 years ago. A lot has happened in that time and plenty has changed with Tree House Brewing and some has stayed the same. They still do not distribute but have opened up so many new locations since so easier for more people to visit. This location is still such a huge place and unlike other breweries so a must visit for beer lovers still! Many more beers are available in cans/bottles and on draft. So scarcity is not as big of an issue anymore that's for sure. The biggest changes are honestly beneficial for those non beer lovers. Why is that you ask? Well Tree House is much more than a brewery at this point. With options of it all to-go and to have on site besides beer you can get coffee (whole beans or already brewed), cocktails (even a few NA), seltzers, and other options. Truly expanding to the point everyone can find a beverage they want/like. The smartest way to enjoy this place is come during the week not during holidays or summer and it will be a breeze in and out. But make a day of it and enjoy the entire grounds/experience they offer! As an aside other breweries have stepped up their game as well with some making similar quality and others even better beers at times. This is one of the most beautiful breweries I've ever been to. Large modern structure with numerous seating areas. Two separate pouring areas,one for IPA's/Stouts another for Crispy/Lagers & Pilsners. It was about noon on a Sunday & the crowd's were big by our 2 round. They ID you & mark your wrist band limiting you to three beers. We sat in the outdoor canopy section with two fireplaces blazing away. I sampled a Mexican lager & one of the Chech Pilsners. Both outstanding. Large gift shop, sausage food truck out front, Koi pond, hard alcohol,choice layout. Only flaw I found was the to go beer ordering cluster flock.. You are required to order through a kiosk and wait for your order to be put together (waited 30 minutes). Additionally they didn't offer two of the beers consumed that day on the to go menu. Fantastic brewery. I visited on a Monday, and I'm sure a weekend is very different. But when I visited, I noticed so much space for seating along with a food truck. I am more of a lager person than an IPA enthusiast. I live near the I-210 in LA, close to the Miller Coors factory in Irwindale. You can see the big canister every time you drive by on the I-210. So, I usually drink Miller Lite, which I consider a local beer. Coco has repeatedly told me about Tree House IPA. She recounted how she and her sister-in-law brought her mother to Charlton to buy the IPA during a snowy winter day. She described the excellent taste of the beer and the fun trips they made from New York State to Charlton, MA. According to her, Tree House is the best IPA in the world. This time, Coco brought me to visit her mother for her 80th birthday celebration. Coco's sister-in-law, Jiajia, mentioned that there would be some seasonal special flavors before Thanksgiving. The day before Thanksgiving, I ordered the "All Crispies, All the Time!" pack online, which contains 24 different flavored cans, 22 tall cans, and two normal-sized cans. Jiajia drove Coco, her mother, and me from New Windsor to Charlton. We crossed the Hudson River, passing through Southbury, Middlebury, Waterbury, Southington, Farmington, and Hartford, Connecticut. We then crossed the Connecticut River, headed northeast, and passed through Vernon, Tolland, then Union, entering Massachusetts. After passing Sturbridge, we reached Charlton, MA. Without GPS, you would definitely miss the entrance, which is on a plain road without any obvious markers. Fortunately, Jiajia, an old hand at this route, knew the way well. It took several minutes to drive from the entrance to the parking lot of the brewery. The facility combines a bar lodge with the manufacturing area without any strict partitions, which would be prohibited by China's food safety laws. For me, it's okay; I like having the opportunity to see the canisters. My graduate major is Packaging Engineering, so I'm familiar with the details of making cans from aluminum rolls, filling the beer, adding the can cover, and sealing it. I was eager to see the process. The factory part wasn't operational at that time, of course, since it was 6 pm the day before Thanksgiving. The hall was lively but not too crowded. We went to the counter for pickup; there was no waiting. Jiajia had pre-ordered four packs, Coco's mother and I had one pack each. In total, we got 24x6, six cases put on a trailer, and the workers helped us load them into the car. I realized that my variety pack didn't include their famous cans, so I walked to the kiosk and ordered their famous orange Julius and Green. We had a three-hour drive back, so I decided not to drink any craft beer on site. There was no food in the hall, but there were two food trucks outside, one selling tempura, which looked very delicious. The fried onion rings and chicken wings didn't look as good as the prawn tempura, probably from another food truck. At 11:30 pm the night before Thanksgiving, we finished our dinner, and Jiajia was too tired to chat, so she drove back to her home. I was left with more than 50 cans of IPA, and I'm not an IPA lover. I shared a can of Green with Coco, using the two new beer glasses we bought at the brewery. The beer was a hazy bright amber color and looked very beautiful. The taste was amazing; for me, the less bitter, the better. It tasted like juice but wasn't sweet. Green is an American IPA with 7.5% ABV. I opened it first, thinking it would have less alcohol than the Julius. Green typically implies it's greener than orange, and Julius comes in an orange-colored can, right? Later, I found out Julius is 6.8% ABV and is juicier than Green. Green has a citrus flavor, and Julius combines mango, peach, passionfruit, and citrus juice. Oh, now I know why they call it Green - I guess all the tangerines were green before turning other colors. On Thanksgiving Day, I cooked dinner. Coco's mother couldn't consume alcohol for health reasons, and Jiajia doesn't drink alcohol at all. Fortunately, the pack Coco's mother bought was the Holiday Hero Mix, which includes 24 cans but also contains eight non-alcoholic drinks: two kinds of seltzer and two kinds of coffee, two cans each. I tried a sip of the Monochrome Blend Cold Brew coffee, the best cold brew I've ever had in the United States. It's fresh and clear, tasting more like Japanese charcoal-roasted coffee, or at least it has an oriental coffee flavor. All the cans in my pack were labeled with stickers. I found that only Julius, King Julius, Julius Machine, and Green had printed cans, probably because these best-selling items were pre-printed. Most of the rest had sticker labels. Two days after Thanksgiving, Coco and I had enjoyed more than a dozen Tree House IPAs, none of which were bitter. Most were turbid and had a juicy flavor. I liked all of them; so far, I haven't found one I dislike. We're heading back to LA soon, and I hope there's a chance to visit Tree House next year. The New Year is coming. read more

Beer pilgrimage! Nearly every time the Tall Man and I drive along route 90, we try to go to Treehouse for our semi-annual (or multi-annual) beer pick up. It's an ideal spot to stop right at the border with Connecticut, and we've recommended it to nearly everyone who drives to visit Boston. The brewery lives in a large wood-clad building that welcomes you like a retreat center -- which it basically is for its many faithful followers. There's plenty of parking and tons of seating indoors as well as Adirondack chairs outside for warmer days. It's pretty easy to pick up cans, either by ordering online and selecting a pick up time (the preferred method, especially if you want more than a case of beer) or ordering on site (ok for a case or less). You can also enjoy draft beers or coffee and sit at one of the many tables in their vast space -- just can't open cans there. I must confess that I don't drink much beer these days, but I can appreciate a good brew and am surrounded by beer lovers. And these beer lovers (including the Tall Man) love love Treehouse. Yes they're known for their IPAs, but we've just stocked up on a bunch of holiday selections for a week's worth of family gatherings. The beers do get kind of expensive per can, but they are crowd pleasers in the best way. If you don't drink much alcohol like me, though, there's coffee! Treehouse started roasting beans a few years ago and have hot coffee and cold draft lattes (or cans of both). I got a draft oatmilk latte and thoroughly enjoyed the creamy caffeine kick. Love that they have vegan milk! Their straight up coffee is quite good on its own too. We got a four pack of their maple spice lattes to go, which I'll enjoy this week. I'll also note that while they don't have their own food, there was a food truck outside. It's also a relatively kid friendly place (lots of room to roam), so we weren't the only ones with a little one. Changing tables in both gender bathrooms. Treehouse is a happy start or conclusion to any road trip. They only sell their beers on location, which for us makes it even more special. read more

Five stars for the beer. Probably some of the best craft beers on the planet. The venue is also incredibly beautiful. So why 4 stars and not 5? I had to remove a star to account for the ridiculous rules of this brewery. The place is like a state park with beautiful grounds. There is a fish pond, waterfalls, hiking trails, fire pits, and plenty of places to enjoy the outdoors. The brewery itself is 53k square feet! However, there is a strict 3 beer limit per person that is subject to change at any time to 2 or even one, a confusing ordering system, and you'll have to decide which bar to go to for your beer as they only offer some at one bar and others at the other. The main business here I believe is the cans to go. People travel from all over the US to stock up. This is yet another bizarre process. You scan a QR code or use a kiosk to place your to go order and pay. Then, you walk to the back of the brewery and check-in. Your beer is brought out and an employee validates the order with you. After you receive your order they lend you a dolly or hand truck to bring the beer to your car. If you watch the parking lot you'll see people rolling out with 10-20 cases of the coveted liquid gold, likely on a mission for friends and family to bring back this addictive and delicious fermented juice. read more
