When my friend gave me ten sessions as a birthday present, I was not very grateful. Why? Before I went I thought it would be a waste of time. Hypnotherapy always struck me as pseudoscience. But I very quickly changed my mind, and hope I can pass on my positive experience to other people. I have now seen Mayumi six times, and I am both surprised and happy with the results. Having never been to a hypnotherapist before, I didn't know quite what to expect. I didn't know if it would be the kind of hypnosis I have seen on stage shows where people go into a trance and then am programmed to do things. That would have been weird and not something with which I would even feel comfortable doing. That seems like a scam, and who knows what I might be told to do. But that was not my experience with Mayumi. In our first session we spent an hour talking about my needs: to be more focused, quit smoking, relief from headaches. We also discussed my expectations: to see results within a realistic but reasonably quick amount of time. But I also didn't expect to be "cured" in two or three sessions. At the end of our session, we still did then a hypnotherapy session. So my first visit (an hour-long appointment) was closer to an hour-and-a-half. That was my introduction. We then spend the session doing hypnotherapy, which involves Mayumi gently guiding me through visualizations and different thought processes. I am awake during the whole time, but I can only describe my state as one of deep relaxation, where I am open to change through her guided spoken words. My relaxed state creates an openness and desire to change. Relaxing music is in the background but it was special music that moves me into a state of relaxation, where my brainwaves are open to the exercises...but where I was in control to the point where I could stop if I wanted. Mayumi would bring me back to the exercises if my mind wandered, but also told me it was okay for my mind to wander, at which point I would gently bring it back to our session. So, as I said, I have now been to see Mayumi six times. I have stopped smoking for just over a month(!), I feel calmer, and have also noticed that I can focus for longer periods of time. I can devote my mind to the task at hand, and get less easily distracted. I am not "fixed," and I am by no means trouble free, but I can see notable and tangible differences in the specific areas we have worked on. Mayumi also taught me exercises to do at home to augment the things we do in our sessions. Really, I know it is all about the time and effort I put into this change process, and how open and willing I am to work with Mayumi. Hypnotherapy is not a mind-programming thing, but it is a mind reorientation, if I choose to act on it. It is like a partnership (in change,) as is any successful interaction with another person. This is a long review because I wanted to explain and convey to others the positive experience I have had. I hope you will get as much out of the hypnotherapy with Mayumi as I have.
