Hotel 71 is an exceptional hotel in lower old town Quebec. The historic building has been meticulously updated in a very pleasing contemporary style that felt unbelievably relaxed and upscale. Our room in the seventh floor had an amazing view of the Hotel Frontenac. The service was exceptional all the accommodations were were very comfortable. There is a wine dispenser in the lobby that you can access with a card, but we didn't have an opportunity to try it as cocktails were served in the lobby the evening we were free. The breakfast was quite generous (pastries, bread, cheeses and cold cuts, yogurt and fruit) but did not include eggs, so did not satisfy the friends we were traveling with. The quality of items was quite good, and a super automatic espresso machine was available 24/7. All in all, we had a wonderful stay. Top notch experience. read more

So happy that I selected this hotel for our 4 nights in Quebec City! It is located in lower town and our room had an expansive view of the port and St. Lawrence river. Hubby loved the rain shower fixture in the oversized shower. One of the best restaurants is located on site and even open on Mondays when many other places are closed. Reservations recommended! Close to the lovely cobblestone streets with galleries and boutiques and away from the noisier tourist areas. Short cab rides to other parts of the city. Lots of hills in between the upper and lower towns so bring your comfy walking shoes! Recommend the hotel breakfast package as there are not many other places nearby. Croissants were delicious, fresh fruit, cereals, etc. Honor wine bar and coffee / tea available 24/7 self service. Pierre on the bell staff is a delight and everyone is very friendly too. Merci! Pretty disappointed with how the hotel charged me after I had already checked out of the hotel at 4am eastern time and flew back to the U.S., for wine that I didn't purchase. I received a notification at around 9 PM pacific time that my card was charged so I immediately called them and asked why I was being charged. The person I spoke to came off very rude. He told me it was for the wine I got and even after I told him I didn't drink any wine he questioned me. I told him to check the security camera of when the card was scanned at the wine vending machine and he just said I will refund you without even apologizing for this misunderstanding/mistake. I'm curious now if someone at the hotel took the card from the express check out box and got themselves a free drink. read more

We were welcomed warmly by the bellhop and Helene at the front desk. The room we had was vast, well decorated between a modern, yet warm decor and the bed super comfortable. We stayed here over Christmas week and loved it! The location is perfect, walking distance to everything and we had a view of the St Lawrence. The room and bathroom were very large, we were expecting more of a European size room so it was a pleasant surprise (room#725). They have a 24/7 coffee station (free) and wine dispenser ($) in the lobby which was super convenient. Breakfast was included in our rate, it was a small continental breakfast of yogurt, breads, fruit, cheese and meat slices which was fine for us but if you want a heartier breakfast skip this and go next door. The staff was so friendly and welcoming, Andreanne and Roxanne found out we were on our honeymoon and surprised us with prosecco and champagne flutes and a card in our room when we came back from a long day of touring! Hotel 71 will exceed all of your expectations! From the second we arrived, our valet Matt was super helpful and very sweet. Checking in and out was a breeze and the suite we had was to die for. Room was very clean and even had a nespresso machine which was super convenient. The view of the Frontenac was unreal. The restaurant below, Il Matto was Italian and it did not disappoint! We actually ordered room service every night from there because the food was great! Our other valet driver Luke was also wonderful just as well as the rest of the workers in the hotel. I didn't feel uncomfortable once, or that I was a bother if I had any questions. Hotel is in the perfect walking distance to everything you need. I want to remember every moment spent at this hotel - as it was truly a classy place to stay. I just couldn't bring myself to play around with Priceline or look into one of our favorite chains when choosing a hotel for Quebec City. Reading the many reviews of hotels in QC paid off and I picked us a winner. We were greeted warmly at the front desk and check-in was smooth. The valet (Max #1) was asked to help us with our bags (and I admit, we had an embarrassingly large amount of bags - the weather was going to be anywhere from 60's and raining to 80's and sunny, tell me you could have packed lighter?). Upon entering our room we heard soft classical music playing and were delighted with our river view. When the reservation was made it was mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday so a beautifully handwritten card and 3 delicious pieces of chocolate awaited our arrival. Max was very kind and helped with all of our luggage as well as writing down some dining suggestions and confirming that we should go to the Hotel Clarendon if we wanted to listen to jazz. My husband quickly zeroed in on the nespresso machine and over the course of the next few days consumed more coffee/expresso than I thought humanly possible. Perhaps that is the reason he didn't mind missing his afternoon naps? The concierge (Max #2) was amazingly helpful every single time we approached him. He gave us a map highlighting the location of the places we had on our agenda and we didn't leave the hotel room without it! The room itself was not the nicest room we have ever stayed in but the staff, the wonderful view, and the pretty awesome walk in shower made this one of my favorite hotel stays ever. Modern boutique type hotel with lots of charm. The staff is great and so are the rooms. Only downside is the the Italian restaurant in the lobby which also provides the room service. However, the neighborhood, has plenty of great eateries right around the corner. I stay here for business and pleasure and have yet to find anything that would make me want to change hotels. For QC, this is the best you can get. I've heard the chateau is not as nice and quite a bit more if you want an equivalent room type. Even with the sub par restaurant this place dwarves five stars bc 4 would not do it justice. read more

After deciding to take a day trip to Quebec City from Montreal, we quickly realized it should be an overnight trip. We hoped on the train in the AM and 3.5 hours later we were in Quebec City. With all the choices we found Hôtel 71, called them up, had a charming fellow assist us and secured us two deluxe king rooms. The folks at the front desk were delightful, the concierge woman, Francine, helped us sort out our attack plan for the city. When we came back to the hotel, we finally saw our rooms, super spacious, modern, very large bathroom. It was what we were hoping for. They have wine on self serve tap in the lobby, which was amazing. Their complimentary breakfast leaves for desire. They had one cereal, bread, fruit, cheese and meat. Wouldn't call it continental. But hey, it was free! Highly recommend a visit their for their service, staff and the rooms, oh plus the amazing location in old Quebec City. read more

An excellent stay here for three nights for our family of five! Quiet hotel tucked into a side street but just minutes away from Petit-Champlain, Rue St. Paul, etc. The free continental breakfast is amazing, and the hotel even left us a bottle of champagne, chocolates and a nice note for our tenth wedding anniversary. This place is in a great location in the lower part of the Old District of Quebec. That being said...it is a more touristy location. You can walk anywhere in Old Quebec, but do have to take a cab to get to some of the more trendier areas of town like St. Roch or St. Jean Baptiste. (in fairness you don't have to really take a cab, but it would be a 15 or 20 min walk). The rooms are clean. Bathrooms have a big walking shower. Valet parking. Clean. Friendly. This hotel was great!! My husband and I were in Quebec City for our honeymoon and stayed here for 3 nights. First, the location is great. Easy to find, easy to get to and from, never had trouble parking in front to valet our car, and so many great spots to walk to. The decor was simple but comfortable, the bed was comfy, the bathroom was spacious, shower was super big, and the curtains did a nice job of keeping the sun from shining through our southern-facing windows in the morning. The front desk and everyone we interacted with for room service were so friendly, but a HUGE thank you goes out to their concierge Francine, who was not only friendly and helpful, but incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of the city. Seriously, there wasn't a question we asked that she didn't know the answer to. She got us tickets to the Cirque du Soleile at a special rate and also made several excellent restaurant recommendations. The best part was that she'd seen the show and had meals at all the restaurants and you could really tell how passionate she was about her job. The definition of hospitable. We just loved her. I was actually sad to check out and leave her behind. Now we're in the Frontenac and it's shown me a few more things I appreciated about Hotel 71: NOTHING there was on sensors and taking up room on the desk/in the fridge, and their internet was free. Oh, and we had excellent massages one day...so relaxing! Room service was very prompt, and valeting the car was $21/day and they brought it around whenever you needed it. Nice rooms, stayed in mini suite, good location. Very nice service overall with the front desk staff being very friendly. Not ideal that housekeeping comes back multiple times even when you have do not disturb signs. No padlocks so can't control when they open the door after a knock. Also the air conditioning is very unique. In some hotels it's annoying when air is loud and cutting on and off. NOT the case here. There is no movement of air and it's very quiet on the floors so you kind of wish the AC made more noise or moved air. That said it's nice and cool. Ceilings are very high which is a big plus. read more

I really like this hotel. It was a converted former bank and quite modern. The front desk is unobtrusive. There is a separate room with a Nespresso coffee maker and hot water dispenser for tea. There is another lounge for sipping the wine that you can buy separately in a self dispensing cabinet. The coffee area is opened all night and shared with customers at it's sister hotel right next door. Frederika, at the front desk helped with dinner recommendations. She was sweet and friendly. Breakfast is served daily from 7-10 am weekdays and 8-11 am weekends. It is self serve with hard boiled eggs, dried fruits, nuts, cereal, sliced ham and cheese, mini croissants, bagels or bread to toast, OJ, tomato and grapefruit juice, lattes, espresso, cappuccino and chopped mixed fruit. The croissants are buttery and flaky. Better than some of the ones you buy in the pastry shops. The rooms have L'Occitane toiletries, big towels, bathrobes, a safe, small refrigerator and Nespresso machine. We were on the top 7th floor so there was a great view of the St. Lawrence river and cruise ship terminal. The Holland America came into port one day. We would definitely stay here again. The Musee d'Civilization is also right across the street. And the hotel has a rear door exit to take you to the street in back. We use this entrance all the time. They do recommend $3-5 CAN tip for your room attendant daily and tips for the breakfast staff. A tip bowl is located by the plates. If you want to avoid the touristy commotion of upper town then I recommend staying at this place in lower town. The walk to upper town takes us 15 mins or longer if we stop to look and there are a couple of routes to get there but stair climbing at some point is inevitable. We made at least 3 trips to Upper Town the 5 nights we stayed in Quebec which is a quick hike. The round trip walk to the Plains of Abraham and tours of the Citadel In one day was the tiring one. read more

Hotel 71 is one of the best hotels in Quebec City. I am so glad that we stayed here because it definitely lived up to our expectations. Bose surround sound, tall ceilings, wood accents, a very modern designed bathroom, nice view of the river...what else could anyone ask for? The juxtaposition between modern and classic accents give this place its character. It also helps that it is located right in the middle of old quebec in a quaint but trendy street with great restaurants and art galleries. The service was impeccable. We had a very late check in at around 1:30 am and we notified the staff via email, to which they promptly replied. They also followed our request to have a room in the quitier floors of the hotel. Our room was on the top floor and it was great because we had a full view of the river. The bathroom was definitely a highlight. The products were all organic and they smelled wonderful. They also sell them in the lobby. The glass rain shower was wonderful and as the girly girl that I am, there was plenty of storage for my beauty products. I also loved waking up in the mornings and making myself an espresso. The little machine in the room definitely came in handy. At night, I usually like to have some tea, so I got hot water from the reception desk. If I come back to Quebec city, I'm definitely staying here!!!! read more

We stayed for 3 days and had one of the most pleasant and comfortable experiences we've ever had. The restaurant in the hotel that serves breakfast was simply amazing. Our waitress, Ariane, was just a joy to speak to every morning. Her personality made our mornings that much more enjoyable. The other restaurant, Mattio, that is connected to the hotel was also undeniably excellent. Even though we never made a reservation, and they were often completely booked, they always found a table for us. When we come back to Québec we will surely be staying here again! read more

The customer service here is top notch. The hotel is in a wonderful location near restaurants and shopping. And easy to walk to any of the attractions around the city. The hotel is a nice size only about 60 rooms and 7 floors. I started on the 5th floor the first night in a large room but asked if I could switch to a river view room and was accommodated to a room on the 7th floor with a nice view of the river. Other rooms have views of the old city. Rooms are modern with high ceilings and wonderful bathrooms. Free breakfast is another nice perk. I would defiantly stay here again. read more

The hotel is beautiful & quant. When we arrived, I was in love. The following day, however, a different story. We left our room to explore Quebec City at 10:30. When we arrived back at 5:00, not only had housekeeping not cleaned our room, there was a note on our door that they didn't want to enter our room since our Do Not Disturb sign was on (FYI....there is NO Do Not Disturb sign in our room for us to have put out). At 5:00 I called to complain & asked for clean towels. At 6:30, still no clean towels, so I used towels on the ground to shower. This time I requested a manager and was told the manager had left for the day. For what we paid for this fancy room, I expect better service! First of all, the location is excellent and the renovation is nice. But the attempt at ultra modern comes off kinda sterile. No artwork, harsh lighting, cheap furniture. We previously had stayed at Quebec City right outside the city walls. As we toured the city we found the lower town which was quaint. We found ourselves returning to the lower town everyday...a lot of walking up and down. So we decided that if we were to return to Quebec City that we would stay at one of the hotels in the lower town. We found Hotel 71 online and made a reservation. I used google maps to get a street view so that I would recognize the buildings nearby. There are no big signs for any of the hotels down there. I also used a Tom Tom navigation which brought me to the right place. We were greeted promptly by the hotel staff when we parked in front of the building. The front desk had everything in order and our room was on the top floor - 7th. This place is swank! Modern furniture and bathroom. Gadgets all around. The coffee machine was fantastic. The TV was complicated to control though. Breakfast was included. It is failry simple - boiled eggs, ham slices, croissants, bagel, and cheeses. The only negative was that there was construction for a couple of hours on the morning we were leaving. It was like waking up to a dentist drill. read more

The location of this hotel is perfect and close to everything. The room was really cool with a very large window, hardwood floors and bose surround sound. The bed was very comfortable with lots of pillows and a down comforter. The bathroom was really cool with a glass rain shower and was kind of my dream bathroom. The staff was really nice and there is coffee and tea available for free all day. The only reason I don't give them 5 stars is because I went to use the lotion provided (the little bottles that are like the shampoo etc) and it had been used. read more

I booked a package deal including a flight and hotel stay at this hotel through Expedia. Unfortunately, due to terrible weather in New York, our connecting flight to Quebec City was canceled, and the earliest the airline could get us to our destination would have been 3 days later. Since this was only supposed to be a 4-day trip, there was no point in arriving there so late, so we changed our flight to come back home. I immediately called Expedia to see what needed to be done about the hotel reservation. The Expedia representative contacted the hotel, but as it was after 6 pm, he said there was no manager on duty who had the authority to issue refunds, and I would have to call back the next morning. The following morning, while still stuck in NY, I called back, and the representative called the hotel. They issued a refund for the stay, except for the first night, so we are out a night's stay, on top of a completely ruined vacation. I understand that it's the hotel's policy, but I do feel like they could have been a little more understanding in this situation. The weather, the canceled flight, and the inability of the airline to get us on another flight within a reasonable amount of time were completely out of our control. Every single person was generous with help, kind, happy. Oui, merci beaucoup! * They have a black market deal with the taxi drivers. Seriously. They pick up the phone to call one for you, and before you can finish finding your French dictionary to tell them that they are wonderful, they taxi has arrived at the curb. * Perfect location downtown in the old city. Walk 1 direction to get to great restaurants, galleries, and the other to head to the Upper City, Chateau, more shopping - each within 5 minute walk (in the snow). * I missed my flight - don't ask - and had to stay another day and night in Quebec. I called to ask if they had a room available, and for the same cost of my previous 3 nights, they gave me the keys to the BEST room in the house! "To make up for a frustrating morning" they said. The hotel is beautifully appointed in a modern/minimalist style. The lobby is comfortable and has a nespresso bar. Rooms are luxurious and extremely cozy. The shower in the bathroom is probably the best shower I have ever had - period. The staff is courteous and extremely helpful. The free wifi, delicious free breakfast, and gym are amenities that made my stay that much better. The location is walking distance to the city's best restaurants and attractions. Reading some of the other reviews, I realized that I agree with it all and there isn't really much to add. It's hard to choose a hotel in Quebec because there are so many highly-rated ones. It really comes down to what you're looking for. If you are looking for something modern but comfortable and casual, within old town but a bit off the beaten path, this is the perfect place to stay. Hotel 71 is in the Vieux-Port area, at the foot of the hill that separates the walled city from the rest of the Old Town. The lower town area (Basse-Ville) is a neighborhood of its own, with lots of shops and restaurants and plenty going on. It's not as packed as the upper town (Haute-Ville) near Chateau Frontenac and many of the main attractions, which you can reach within 10 minutes via the Funiculaire ($2), steps, or public transit Ecolobus ($2). The hotel is in a converted bank building, and they did a great job of choosing contemporary decor that is also quite comfortable and relaxing. Rooms have wood floors, huge windows, very comfortable beds and a rain shower. Even the "basic" room we choose was quite spacious. (Extra perk: in-room Nespresso). The public areas are also quite nice - lots of couches, a 24-hour espresso machine and bikes available for rental. The room includes Continental breakfast - for those of us from the States, a *real* continental breakfast with bread, yogurt, cheese, espresso, etc., not donuts and waffles. It was great. The staff was very friendly, communicated well in English, and went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. We didn't meet one person who was anything short of exceptional. My wife and I just returned from a 4 night stay at the Hotel 71 and it was a great experience. It's a small boutique hotel located in the lower town of Old Quebec. It's within a 4 minute walk to the Funicular which takes you to upper town and about a 15 minute walk to the Citadel and about 2 blocks from the St. Lawrence River. It's located in a very nice area with artist's shops and restaurants nearby. We were on the 7th floor which offered a nice view of the river so try to get that side of the hotel. There's a gym and massage service available but we didn't use these services. The service staff couldn't have been nicer or more friendly. Special thanks to Maxime who gave us top-notch directions along with a marked-up map to where-ever we wanted to go. The rooms were larger than other boutique hotels we have stayed at and were nicely appointed and maintained as was the lobby and other public areas. Breakfast, consisting of yogurt, fruit, mini muffins, croissants, toast and hard boiled eggs is included which takes the pressure off of having to find someplace to eat first thing in the morning. Hotel 71 is a 10 (and so is Matto)! By far we can not imagine a better place to stay (nor eat) than Hotel 71 in Quebec (and the connected Matto restaurant). Yes it is THAT good! Of course we first considered the Chateau but after reading the reviews here and elsewhere we went with "the best" - and very glad we did. It not only saved us money but likely frustration as well. Our travel agent also warned us about various ongoing construction projects at the Chateau that made us nervous. So onto the 71: First the rooms were great! Very large, high (like 14 feet) ceilings, very clean and oh boy, what a bathroom! Let's say the photos do not lie. BTW - the shower was large enough for an army (of two) and had the largest rain fall shower head we've ever seen! Bed was extra comfy too. Room was very quiet. We had a river view which we would recommend even if it costs slightly more (our travel agent actually got us a very good rate - better than anything we saw on line - and certainly less than what we saw other properties going for). Second, the staffs at both the hotel and Matto were also the best! Very nice, helpful, responsive, attentive, professional and they remember you! We had two small self inflicted issues with the room (OK I broke the a/c control and managed to do something to the remote for the tv) both of which were taken care of very quickly and without fuss. The concierge even called later just to make sure everything was still OK. Third, the location. Can't beat the neighborhood, all the cafes, port, museum and shops nearby, the incline is only a short couple blocks away and takes you right up to the top by the Chateau (so no walking up 200 plus stairs - unless you want the exercise). Finally Matto! We ended up eating there 4 times and everything we had was some of the best we've ever had! And by everything, we could write a list but all you really need to do is look at the menu and know that no matter what you order it will be great! The bar tenders also make some scrumptious drinks! Trust their suggestions especially on the desserts! We even dropped in one afternoon for cheese and wine after been highly ignored and disappointed at the bar at the Chateau (read our review) and even that was great! This is an ultra cool, super comfortable boutique hotel in a perfect location in the lower city. I'd certainly stay here again on my next trip to Quebec City. The bed was great, the room tastefully chic (hardwood floor and area rug instead of the usual dubious wall to wall). We had a tremendous view of the river, where a gigantic Dutch cruise ship was anchored during our stay. And, oh, the shower. Heavenly. They even have a serviceable gym. I did a complete workout with weights and a great elliptical, all with a view of the Château Frontenac and the high point of the Citadelle. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The concierge pointed us to a wonderful restaurant for dinner (Café St-Malo) just around the corner. read more

Best hotel I've ever stayed in. The bed, the mulimedia, the attention to detail. Story goes that the kids of the a hotel owner worked in their folks hotel and wanted to do something a little hipper so they bought the building next door. Stylish and beautifully decorated and curated hotel with excellent amenities and service located on a quiet street in the lower town of Vieux Quebec across from the musee de civilization. There was unlimited capuccino and espresso in the lobby and self serve wine and after dinner drinks. Rooms were furnished like the common areas in contemporary but cozy design and were quiet with velvet drapes and thoughtful touches including toiletries from l'occitane. read more

This hotel provided a wonderful stay for my husband and I when were in Quebec city for three days. Every single person that works there went above and beyond to make our needs comfortably met. The rooms were gorgeous and the restaurant provided a free delicious assortment of breakfast options. We had dinner there also and it was thoroughly enjoyable. It is called Matto. I can't recommend this hotel highly enough. It's right across the street from the back of the Civilization Museum and Uber drivers have no problem finding it. It's very close to the harbor if you're coming in from a cruise. It's also very quiet. The bellhops were especially friendly and I really liked Matthew. He waited until our Uber came so he could help put our heavy bags in the trunk. Oh, and I couldn't remember the tour company or what time I was supposed to meet the bus the next day and the front desk clerk called up the tour companies until she found out who I was registered with. I thought we had misplaced our paperwork. I made a lot of reservations for dinner and tours with Francine and she was very kind and patient. Stay there and you won't be disappointed. read more

I adored my stay here! This is a perfect place for any couple (or single). Wouldn't be suitable for kids. I am pretty sure there is only one bed in every room. Wonderful location in the lower town. The upper and lower town are so compact that everything is close, but do wear comfortable walking shoes. I pretty much echo all of the positive statements below. We were also upgraded upon arrival (I booked directly through their website). We walked in and soft classical music was playing in the room (and bathroom!) which was a nice touch. I enjoyed luxurious baths and showers with the classy music! The bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was terrific (ladies beware, the lighting is a little bit dim for makeup). I loved the hardwood floor and tall ceilings. The room felt open and spacious, simple but modern. Breakfast is not included with every package - it depends how you book. You can purchase the continental breakfast for $10. I did this one morning. It wasn't fancy; if you are looking for a hot breakfast, go somewhere else. Otherwise a selection of croissants, ham, cheese, bread, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, juice, coffee, granola was offered. Delicious complimentary espresso was available 24/7, and a very friendly and knowledgeable staff made us feel very welcome. The hotel isn't marked very visibly from the street, but once you find it, pull up front to unload and they will send someone to valet the car for 20/night. Slight drawbacks to warn you about include the teeny tiny ironing board (college dorm-room style), and the wireless internet connection that was very weak at times. Because I did not have a lot to do on my computer and not much to iron, this wasn't a huge deal to me, just small and temporary frustrations. One of my all time favorite hotels! I will definitely try to stay there again. read more
