When I got here around 8pm the receptionist was about to close for the night. I'm not sure what we'd have done if she'd left, but I guess we got lucky. The location: it is perfect! It's close to everything and central. The building: it is old, dated, and poorly cared for. The AC is less than adequate, the hallway smells like sautéed onions, there was water leaking from my ceiling (I guess from the AC), the hospital looking bathroom at times smelled like sewer, and sheets were the texture of sand paper. Parking: $20/night which is pretty good.

Our check in process was smooth and we quickly accessed our room. We then went to each a quick lunch at the rooftop bar. Upon returning to our room about an hour later, there was a strong, pungent odor that smelled like chemicals (think hair relaxer). My husband and I tried opening the balcony door to ease the fumes, as they were beginning to make us feel sick (nauseous, headache, dizziness). First, I went to the front desk to request maintenance come investigate the source of the smell. Within 15 minutes, a tech showed up and said the source of the smell was coming from a clogged shower drain. As we had just arrived, we had not used the shower or the tub in the suite. He then said that the shower was unusable for the duration of our stay and left. I am skeptical that the odor was actually coming from the shower. While the technician was in the room, I had to sit on the balcony because I was feeling so unwell. Being 4 months pregnant, I was worried about harming my unborn babies. While sitting on the balcony with the door shut, I could still smell the odor that appeared to be coming from the HVAC system (compressor was right above my head outside). Meanwhile, the odor persisted. My husband and I went back to the front desk to ask if there were any other rooms available that we could relocate to. According to the front desk, there was not a single other room in the hotel. Instead of trying to help, they said if I was pregnant and didn't feel good from the fumes that I should go get a room in a different hotel. I was appalled by the lack of concern and customer service. Luckily, the Best Western around the corner had a very comfortable, odor-free room that we were able to obtain for the night. That put us out DOUBLE the cost, as we had to pay for the uninhabitable room and the replacement room. The front desk advised me to email management about the situation. I sent them an email upon checking out on 7/19/26 and shared both my phone number and email to give them a chance to make this right. Upon writing this review, I have not heard from them via phone or email to address our issues. Being pregnant and vulnerable overseas, this treatment was deplorable. I advise anyone who is pregnant or might be bothered by strong odors and poor customer service to AVOID the Splendid Hotel and spend your travel money at one of the many other fantastic, accommodating hotels in the area.

Couldn't figure out the AC, but got the heat to turn on? Also, TV wouldn't turn on strangely enough. My room has a mini fridge and a nice balcony that has a small view of the ocean and town. For less than $100 USD a night it's a pretty darn good deal for this area. Also, it is just one block from the Promenade where you gain a clear ocean view. Walking distance to everything! Located in a great spot. I would highly recommend coming here.

Hotel Welcome Colleagues appreciated our ability to converse in French. Hotel Welcome colleagues were very sweet to our child. Room service so prompt and did an excellent job. Here are a few thoughts on what could be improved upon, having stayed there 3 times now in 11 years: 1. Check-in is at 3. There seems no room to negotiate this. We waited about 4 hours in lobby before room was ready exactly at 3. Now, perhaps this is just their policy but sharing for those that may arrive on an early am flight as we did. 2. Bedding situation: Mattresses are lumpy and akin to a futon. Even with a topper added, you can't hide an older mattress that needs replacing. This has been the case all 3 visits. The major issue for our family was both lack of pillows and that the pillows were not comfortable at all. We had 2 pillows for a king bed. Both felt like a hard cushion. Prior visits (2 prior stays) we had about 6 sleeping pillows on bed. Now, it's great that they have room to put in a twin bed for your child, so that is a huge plus, but a good pillow is so important for a restful night's sleep. Our child said their pillow was filled with rocks. When we called to ask for more pillows, that were also softer, the front desk told us there were no more pillows and call back in the morning. They did come up to help us shortly after, saying there should be more pillows in our room- but they were not there. 3. Prior stays, we felt really "welcomed" with a small floral arrangement and local chocolates. This time, no flowers and a smaller chocolate box. Nice but noticed the difference. 4. Not a critique but you will need to bring a conditioner for your hair. They have very small bottles, which don't go far. The bath and shampoo products are nice. Overall, we love this hotel. Rooms have balconies where you can sit and enjoy the sea. The view is incredibly stunning. It is right next to the Citadel which is lovely, and that, along with the tunnels and immediate area, really take you back in time. I think some renovations with new flooringpaint, mattresses, pillows would go a long way and better justify the price point too.
