We recently attended a child's birthday party at the Lincoln Children's Museum, and since it was…read moreheld after hours (5:30-7:30 p.m.), the museum was closed to the general public. While that time slot wasn't the most ideal for our family's schedule, having the museum almost entirely to ourselves was a huge perk. The kids rarely had to wait to use an exhibit, which made for a much more enjoyable experience than visiting during normal operating hours. Overall, the kids had a great time running from exhibit to exhibit, but I did find some of the museum's displays a little underwhelming. A number of the stations could benefit from clearer signage explaining what you're supposed to do. In several cases, it wasn't immediately obvious how an activity was meant to be used or what made it interactive. Some of the exhibits also feel like they're due for an update. Having visited both, I personally think the Omaha Children's Museum offers a wider variety of exhibits and more engaging hands-on experiences, but Lincoln's museum still provided plenty to keep the kids entertained for a couple of hours. The birthday party area itself was pretty standard. It reminded me of a concession stand or cafeteria-style space with tables and chairs. The birthday family was able to decorate a gift table and bring in their own cake, but it didn't really feel like a space where you could create much of a themed party atmosphere. I'm not sure what the museum's decorating policies are, so that may have played a role. One thing that stood out was the lack of water for the adults. The kids had drinks, but there weren't bottled waters or even cups of water available for the parents. I had forgotten my water bottle and ended up filling one of the small paper cups at the drinking fountain, which wasn't my favorite option. The museum also made a couple of announcements over the PA system--one for dinner and another to let everyone know there were about 15 minutes left in the party--but they were so garbled that I couldn't understand either one. I only found out what had been said after talking to other parents. Even with the reduced noise level from having a private event, the announcements were difficult to make out. The building itself has an older feel, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does show its age in places. Overall, the kids had a wonderful time, and that's ultimately what matters most. With some refreshed exhibits, clearer instructions at the activity stations, and a few improvements to the overall guest experience, I think the museum could be even better.

Most recently, we attended a Sunday afternoon game for Family Fun Day, and there were plenty of interactive booths and activities for kids, which made it especially enjoyable for families. This time, we chose to sit on the berm since we had our toddler with us, and it was the perfect setup. He had space to run around while we still got to enjoy the game. It's such a well-kept, family-friendly stadium, and we feel lucky to have a place like this locally.

Even if you hate Jazz…read more Every Tuesday in June, the Sheldon Art Association brings in renowned & local jazz acts to perform on the lawn of the Sheldon Art gallery on the beautiful UNL campus. If you love jazz, you'll enjoy it - but most people are there for the atmosphere. Grab a lawn chair or a blanket & some bug spray & show up early to pick out a good spot. By the time the music starts, the Sheldon Sculpture Garden looks like a giant quilt from all of the people on blankets. This is a relaxing summer evening out in the open air. You'll be surrounded by friendly people, kids playing cards on blankets, people reading or doing crosswords, lots of dogs, & lots of babies. TIPS: If you're a hardcore Jazz fan, you may want to sit close to the front. This is a social event, & people will talk through the whole thing. Likewise, if you're social, you may want to sit towards the back or wander the sidewalks that wind through the garden. Bring a picnic dinner & dine on your blanket while listening to live music on a warm summer evening. Wonderful. Bring cash. You'll want some UNL Dairy Store Ice Cream for dessert, won't you? They're located with many other vendors at 12th & R (another dinner option). Go to the bathroom beforehand, if you can help it. Otherwise, you can find restrooms in Architecture Hall (rumored to have the largest urinals EVER) or in the basement of Ferguson Hall. If you plan on bringing your dog, make sure he/she plays well with others, or you're asking for trouble at this event. Lots of dogs here. UPDATE: As of 2010, dogs are no longer allowed at this event. If you bike there, there's a rack where you can lock it up in front of Ferguson Hall (northwest corner of the crowd).

They bring some great live jazz bands to perform in beautiful weather, with a plethora of food trucks down the street to provide some delicious food. The best thing about jazz in june, though, is the number and diversity of people that show up to enjoy the event every time. If you grew up in Lincoln you'll see people you'd forgotten that you knew, and even if you didn't, you get a good look at the patchwork of people that make up Lincoln. It's a great way to enjoy a summer day and get to know the city a bit better.

(The longest sellout streak in all of college football is proof). Definitely the best college football stadium ever. If you are from Nebraska or are a Nebraska fan, this is THE place to be during college football season and the energy in this stadium is unlike anything else you will experience. The true Nebraska experience is here. The Runzas, to the Husker dogs, to the Valentino's pizza. Night games are my favorite because of the incredible light show. Hearing one half of the stadium yell HUSKER and the other half yell POWER is always super cool. The energy is truly electric and Husker fans are the most passionate best fan base there is!!! I am so proud to have gone to Nebraska and will always be a diehard Nebraska fan. To get to walk at graduation after completing my bachelor's degree in this stadium was very special to me. I have always gone to Nebraska games growing up with my Dad and it has always been one of our favorite places. I am grateful to Memorial Stadium for all of the memories of going to games with him as well as with my husband and friends. I truly don't think you can really understand what a Nebraska football game is like until you go for yourself, but I love telling people all about it. They're not even in the Big 12 anymore. Doesn't matter... That hurt runs deep. I was at that last heart breaker of a game at Jack Trice before Nebraska moved to the Big 10... That being said.... The campus and grounds around Memorial Stadium are inspiring. It's hard not to look up at those walls and not feel some respect for their football program with so many years of success behind it. We had met friends from Oklahoma in Lincoln. Terry's a huge football fan in general so I took him over to see the stadium and the Nebraska athletics hall of fame. No one can argue it's not impressive. But I'm still not going to give it 5 stars... Lol

The 2015 Great Nebraska Beerfest might have just been my favorite local suds festival to date. Not…read moreonly did I finally get to check out Werner Park (great minor league baseball stadium), I was able to reconnect with some old friends, say hi to some new family and just have an all around enjoyable day sampling beers from across the country. My favorite area was the tent that housed breweries from Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri. It was great to talk to reps from nearby cities and plan my next weekend trip around stopping by their venues. Also, and I'm not sure if this is just the current trend, but Great Nebraska Beerfest saw more than it's fair share of sour beers -- something that'd been difficult to find at other local festivals. From Boulevard to Lucky Bucket to C.I.B. and many, many more, sours were in full effect at GNB. Big props for Nebraska Brewing Company for putting on such a top notch festival. Can't wait till next year!

I just started liking craft beer when I moved here, so I went to the only cider stand and drank a lot of their product! Great place to relax over your lunch hour downtown…read more From late May-August, the Updowntowners bring in local music acts for a free afternoon concert series. Concerts are Noon-1pm every Wednesday. It's hidden away downtown in the Lincoln Community Foundation Gardens (behind the Korn Popper). Bring some lunch, or if you're empty-handed, you can grab some food from the Korn Popper on your way in. No lawn chairs necessary. There are tables & plenty of ledges or steps to sit on. The music, fountains, and garden will de-stress you enough to face the dreaded after-lunch meeting.
