Make sense from a safety perspective as women. Welcome Centers are typically a class of their own though - and this one just across the state line off I-81 is no exception. Brightly lit, inviting, ample tractor trailer parking, and sparkling clean - I can't believe I've driven past it hundreds of times and never even noticed it. Too busy making a beeline for the Bojangles at the next exit lmao. On one side of the center are the restrooms - choose from men, women, and single room "family." Truly a spot for everyone - IYKYK. The bathrooms themselves were incredibly clean, and there were a couple of larger stalls for accessible access. As a fat, nothing worse than rubbing up against the door or the seat :shivers: going into a bathroom stall. There was even a stall with a mini commode perfect for smaller people and kids. On the other side was the actual welcome center - staffed with an actual employee and hundreds of brochures, booklets, and coupon books of state attractions. Lots of vending machines too. There are two entrances - the front for car drivers and the back for tractor trailer drivers. We had some Truck Business to attend to in nearby Winchester and parked the rig overnight to sleep, then left the truck here for a few hours and it was perfectly safe. We also had our dog with us (mind your business) and were able to give him a long sniff walk around the property and tucker him out. There were a lot of employees tending to the restrooms and the grounds and they were all very friendly. Just a very nice vibe and not at all the seedy trafficking spot drilled into my head since birth lol. Now, I can't speak for what happens when the sun goes down, but during the daylight hours this is worth a stop. Enjoy!

Very spacious with lots of vending machines and an area to sit and relax or have a meal. The men's and women's bathrooms are kept clean and tidy and are also big and can handle numerous patrons at a time. The outside is just the same, grounds are beautifully maintained and they even have a large "LOVE" sign for pictures of your trip to their state. Graph a magazine or brochure from the rack and see everything this state has to over. I wish all rest areas were like this one, your trip would be so much more enjoyable.

The biggest downside was being woke up on a Saturday morning (7AM) by the loudest TV from a room next to us. You could basically hear word for word through the wall. If the AC was running, it definitely helped drown it out, but we couldn't fall back asleep. We were tempted to call the front desk to ask if they may turn it down, but decided against it. I think the people next to us just had their TV blasting because we couldn't fall hear anything else during our time there. Breakfast was good- I see other reviews didn't speak highly of it, but it's a typical hotel breakfast and thought it was quite adequate. Yogurt and oatmeal with different toppings, four kinds of cereal, egg bites, sausage, hard boiled eggs (in the shell), toast/bagels, and self making pancake machine that was pretty cool to watch. Also had apples and oranges available. The gym was one of the better "small" gyms I've seen! Great free weights, medicine balls, mats, box steps, TRX bands, a peloton, nice treadmills! They have wipes and right outside is a water refill station along with ice and ice buckets. I noticed there is a laundry room on the first floor too, so a nice option if you need it. All employees I interacted with were friendly and professional. This is conveniently located to several restaurants and stores - Walmart if walking distance. She booked it weeks in advance and it seemed to be one of the better hotels in the area plus the price was great and they offered free continental breakfast. Upon arrival I noticed the hotel was newer and had plenty of parking in the front and the back. They also have a nice little area to sit outside in the back to eat, smoke, vape, chat, have a beer, or what not. The lobby was very vibey and colorful and they have beers and wines for purchase as well as snacks and frozen foods, but having a pool table there is probably not the best idea for a hotel as some of the guests were annoying and obnoxious. The room was nice, the tv was a good size, the bed was very comfy, the pillows were not great, but the shower was nice and had amazing water pressure. I thinks it's a nice place but could be way better with more professional employees. Every time I walked by or went to the front desk to ask a question they were either in the office on their phone or behind the desk on their phone. Also, they weren't the friendliest either. The free breakfast is pretty much a joke. I've had better breakfast at a dirty gas station. It's obviously edible and will do the job, but it's not very good in any regards. It's nothing like other Hilton's I've stayed at over the years. It's very very minimal and simplistic but not in a good way. The eggs tasted like cardboard and the bread selection was sorta nasty. I witnessed a lot of cars using the parking lot as a short cut to the road literally 100 ft away because they didn't want to wait at the stop sign. So if you have kids be careful because they were flying through the lot. The price was great considering and since we are rarely in the room when we travel we thought we'd give this Tru a chance since we'd never stayed at one before. Would I stay here again, probably not. Recently I had to stop because I needed to do some work related stuff. It also didn't hurt that I needed to use the facilities. Getting off at this rest stop can be a bit tricky. This sits at the top of a crest where three lanes of traffic (used to allow for slower moving big rigs to be on the right) goes down to two. So if you are scurrying along to pass those big rigs, you may miss it or have to cut it close to make the exit to the rest stop. Once on the lot, just follow the signs to where regular cars/trucks/suvs would go. The building on the grounds are what you would expect at a rest stop. They do have some things here that are to entertain or educate you, but they have been directly in the sunlight so much that they are bleached or just plain old destroyed. Facilities are well taken care of and usable. My main purpose here was to do a real quick work thing and then continue on my way. The cell service here is bad. I had LTE at most and did not matter what I was trying to do, just would not work. Totally not their fault, but if it is against the law to text or hold a handheld device while driving, they might want to invest in WiFi or something at these rest stops. Getting back onto the highway is a bit tricky as well. Leaving from the regular vehicle lot you go on what feels like a winding country road. Then you have to rush yourself in hopes that you can make it back on the highway without causing any delays.

I can't speak for all of the properties, but SLEEPY RIDGE HIDEAWAY was a dream come true! A small full kitchen with bedrooms to sleep 8 people and two bathrooms. Inside we had a wood burning stove which was great on a cool rainy evening. Outside there was a screened in porch and a back deck. There was a fire pit where which we made use of regularly! A game room with air hockey and shuffleboard. But the best part....a hot tub!!! And yes we fit 8 people in there! This cabin also had a nice trail down a hill to the creek below which was very serene and was a 10 minute drive to good hiking trails. If you need to get away...check out berkely springs and all the cabins they have to offer....ours was about $45 per person for the weekend!

Unfortunately, the new owner's behavior was unprofessional and, frankly, upsetting. When we called for help with the front door (which wouldn't open), he responded with hostility, telling us he wasn't our "servant" and proceeding to lecture us for nearly 20 minutes -- without letting us speak. The call was loud, one-sided, and extremely uncomfortable. It escalated further when we were briefly locked out remotely, seemingly as a way to assert control. Feeling threatened, we stayed inside the rest of the evening, watching the door. We also spoke with another group checking in the next day who had their own negative experience. One of them said, unprompted: "This man should not be running a B&B." We agree. I rarely write negative reviews, but in this case, there are much more welcoming, safe, and professional options in Hancock -- I highly recommend choosing one of those instead.
