When I first began, I had my mom do my taxes with her tax preparer and I did not understand the process of how it was done and her tax preparer would process it wrong at times stating I owed money when I didn't for example. So after that frustration I decided to get help from a friend and they were not completely clear on how to do it and one does not get their highest refund. So then I finally decided to invest in a tax preparer myself last year. I choice H&R black because it was close and I wanted to go on person. I paid a high price only to leave feeling confused about how my taxes was processed. I did not feel comfortable to ask as many questions about what was happening on the screen because when I would, the preparer would quickly answer and then change the subject to ask me questions regarding my personal life. I left feeling like I had not understood the full process of my taxes filed, I did not get my questions answered concerning my other taxes, and I was not taught how to navigate the profile that I had online despite it was in person. Now coming to Story Tax was such a different experince. I was hesitant at first because it was not close and the service was not in person but it was the best choice I made. I left feeling like I understood how my taxes was processed, all my questions was answered, I was instructed on how to use the website over a phone call, when I got out he website it was super efficient and easy to navigate (it felt like when you trying to get somewhere and you don't even have to wait for the train). On top of that I got the highest refund and the customer service from Jessica was outstanding. She is transparent, focused, professional, patient, respectful, and fantastic to work with. Then he hung up on me. Complete waste of an entire week... the week before tax day. UPDATE: Called another CPA and they agreed with me. Not only was Fiotax rude and unprofessional, they were wrong in a way that would've cost me thousands of dollars if I hadn't terminated my relationship with them. Update 2: Nearly 6 years later, the business has replied to this review with outright lies. I did not demand anything or cause any distress to staff. I had asked for tax service, they agreed and took all my information, and then they gave me completely wrong tax advice and lied to me, and are still lying now. Avoid this business.

I signed an engagement letter on September 30, giving them over two weeks to complete the work. From October 3rd, Ben knew my documents were disorganized and would require cleanup. Despite this, he waited until October 14th - one day before the deadline - to send me the specific P&L template format he needed. When I asked basic structural questions the morning of October 15th, he was still providing guidance and clarifications through October 16th. I provided all requested information within 24 hours of receiving clear requirements, though admittedly a few hours past his same-day deadline. Rather than work through it or communicate deadline risk earlier, Ben simply didn't file. When I asked about their penalty reimbursement process (standard practice for firms with E&O insurance), Ben claimed we had "not engaged in any services together" - despite having a signed engagement letter from September 30th. He then terminated the relationship, leaving me with accruing penalties. Professional tax firms manage deadlines proactively, communicate requirements clearly, and take responsibility when they drop the ball. This firm did none of that. They waited until the last minute, provided unclear guidance, missed the deadline, blamed the client, and walked away. Save yourself the headache and hire someone competent.

When it's time for me to send them my information, copies of forms, etc., they first email me a document that contains about 20 or so items/questions that I need to respond to....things like my full name/address/SS....then info on charitable contributions...stock trades/dividends, etc. The usual. It's very easy to follow along and just answer the questions, save the document and then email it back to them. Uploading copies of 1099 forms, W-2's etc to their website platform is also very easy. In mid-Feb (when it's not quite as busy as say later in March, or early May), they turned around my income tax return in under 2 weeks...and I think closer to 1 week. I definitely recommend them!
