If the I Street Bridge could talk, just think of all the amazing stories it can tell us about Sacramento back in the early 1900's ! At this place in time, San Francisco was recovering from the devastating earthquake. Automobiles were introduced in the city of Sacramento for the first time, and women were finally granted the right to vote.
The I Street Bridge was built by American Bridge Company in 1911. This historic metal truss swing bridge connected Yolo County with Sacramento County, and is said to be the heaviest swinging center bridge in the United States. Currently the upper level of the bridge is used by automobiles and pedestrians. While the lower level is used by Union Pacific Railroad.
Rumor has it that by 2020 a new bridge will be built just a quarter of a mile North of the current location. This new bridge will accommodate vehicles and pedestrians only, while the old bridge will still remain in use by the Union Pacific Railroad. For historical value I would give the bridge (5 Stars). But for practical use the bridge deserves 3 stars. Bridge is very old and the two vehicles lanes on the upper deck are very narrow.
