Last week (June 2017), I was an American tourist in London (I'm from Minneapolis, but you can usually find me in southwest Germany near Loerrach), staying on Commercial Road, through airbnb. We were two mothers, with three girls, ages 5, 11, and 11. Watney Market and Iceland Foods (plus a Tesco Express) were our closest food sellers. I was VERY IMPRESSED with Iceland foods. It has not only just excellent frozen foods, but also almost every kind of groceries that we needed. Ok - if you want really fresh fruits and vegetables, than please shop at the Watney Market outside - that's open and going from mid-morning to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday. I had fun browsing through the aisles of Iceland Foods choosing fun British things to eat while the kids slept in late back in our flat.
Back to Iceland Foods - why is it so good? The selection is wide (from budget to gourmet) and the prices are low! For example, for us, they had half price on: Birds Eye Chicken / Beef pot pies, Birds Eye nice-fish-to-bake-in-the-oven and Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream. We really liked their strawberry trifle, also not expensive. Also, the store-workers are really nice. They'll show you where to find things.
Another day in the queue at Iceland Foods, I met an older woman. She said that she'd lived near there for the last 45 years. What did she do for work? Her father ran a fruit and veg store, and she'd worked for him. This store and this neighborhood are clearly really great. read more
