The health food scene doesn't seem to be as prevalent here as in the States, and especially California, but there are a considerable amount of small and large stores catering to the health-conscious consumer. They can range from the moderately-priced to the exorbitant, and not all are worth what you pay. This little independent grocery store, however, not only has everything you need with quality you can trust, but the prices are actually worth what you get. They have a little bit of everything, with carefully-picked selections to satisfy even the staunchest vegetarian, vegan, and even Paleo-lover out there. From fine meats and cheeses, to super healthy drinks and take-away meals, and even a little something to satisfy that sweet tooth, (and yes, that's healthy for you, too). My favorites are the really hard-to-find items like the grain-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free granola and cereal options that are a bit pricey, but definitely worth what you pay for them, as a little bit will keep you going for hours, and tastes delicious. They have plenty of other yummy snacks like vegan coconut jerky and ready-made meals for on-the-go, including healthy juices and smoothies. They also carry unique and interesting beverages like maple and birch tree waters that are high in magnese, zinc, vitamin C, and other minerals. They even have black alkaline waters with activated charcoal that acts as a magnet for toxins in your body. Everything else from the bread to the booze also looks good, and while you may break the bank a little on a routine shopping trip, it will force you to spend your money well, invest in your health, and make it last. The Grocery is like the Shoreditch baby sister of Whole Foods. I really did try to resist this place. But given repeated exposure (I get massages downstairs at My Treatment Rooms) -- it was just too hot to handle. I admit it, I like this place. A lot. It's just so damn appealing. And expensive. And...LOOK at this selection of tea. All the tea! And organic things. Many organic things. Homemade things! The soups in particular have very limited ingredients (read -- no crap) and are really great. Try the butternut squash/almond and split pea/ham. I'll be honest -- I can only take the bright lights of Tesco/Food Co-OP/Sainsburys for about 30 seconds before I want to expire along with all the fruit and veg that are hanging on to their last dying breath before some sucker takes them home. I might as well be on "Supermarket Sweep" -- sometimes I'm in and out so fast I barely know what I got. I just loathe the experience so much I want to be just as short as possible. This is the only grocery shop in London that I actually ENJOY. It's a nice, manageable size. The aisles are wide enough for 2 people to be in them at once. I enjoy looking at different products. The Grocery may be expensive, but as Steve B says -- "it sells nice things." And sometimes you've just had enough shrink wrap/pre-fab food from all those other crap supermarkets and you want some nice things and its worth the investment. Nice wholesome, diverse food. It's novel and it's nice. There, I said it! I tried to resist but sometimes (usually?) the hipsters are spot on when it comes to topics such as these. The Grocery is a winner. *takes cards. *there's a little takeaway coffee place right near the registers. *cash machines outside. Parent Fact: *this is one of the only places I've found that carries Nanny Care Goat's Milk Infant formula. Totally random, but I was quite happy to find this out! As I discussed in my review of 'Planet Organic' I have mixed feelings towards Organic boutique shops. Most often they are overpriced and a bit too sterile for their own good. Though The Grocery has elements of this, it seems a bit more down to earth and I would probably say it was my favourite of all the bigger organic stores. The best thing about The Grocery is its very well labelled ready meals. I have a lot of friends that I find it quite difficult to cook for because of gluten/ wheat intolerance's or vegetarian/vegan diets. The main course can always be figured out but when it comes to dessert I'm at a bit of a loss. The Grocery has cleverly cottoned on to this and labels all its meals 'Vegan Friendly' or 'Wheat Free'. I bought a gluten-free-vegan-friendly-cheesecake from here once (which was better than it sounds) and my friends were very touched to be able to tuck in with everyone else. However, for my budget The Grocery is still too expensive and personally I don't think its stock is as good as in my local fruit and veg shop (The Newington Green). read more

My housemate being a wheat intolerant vegetarian finds this place perfect for her! Having a huge selection of wheat free products - cereals, breads, pastas, crackers and a great selection of tofu, quorn sausages, and healthy looking vegetables. You never feel rushed to shop quickly and the staff are very relaxed. The thing I especially love is the selection of liquorice and other sweets! Also within this fantastic store is a delicious Cafe with yummy homemade biscuits and cakes and real coffee. You can sit at big farm kitchen tables, read the papers, have breakfast relax and chill out any day of the week - a real treat! read more

This is a review for the cafe part of the store. Actually this isn't even about the cafe but a pop up brunch that took place here called Brunch at Fifi's. TLDR: If you hear Brunch at Fifi's or "pop up" brunch, stay away. I decided to take my friend for brunch here because I walked by, saw a nice place and found the menu posted outside to be quite nice. But when I walked inside this Saturday, I was greeted and told about this pan-African brunch they were serving. I was a bit surprised, but after seeing some standard brunch dishes on the menu, decided to sit down. Our options were actually very limited because there were only three items on the brunch menu. Anyway, it took FORTY FIVE minutes for our two dishes to come out. There're only three other people + two groups of two-three in the restaurant at the moment. It was ridiculous. I was imagining them trying to grow wheat in the kitchen or something. Basically it was a pop up operation so no one knew what the hell they were doing. The food was mediocre and cold. I would come back to this cafe again to try their normal menu. But if I hear "pop up brunch" I'm running the other way. I find it quite irresponsible for the business to rent out this space and completely ruin the experience for new customers. read more

I bought two cartons of strawberries that were completely mouldy upon inspection the next morning, but I had already discarded the receipt, so I called and spoke to someone about going back to get a refund or replacement product. When I went in, the person I'd spoken to wasn't there, so I spoke to the manager, who I had to convince to give me a refund (approximately 4-5GBP, but he made it seem like I was asking him to give up his first-born child) despite my reference to the person I'd spoke with and my showing him time-stamped photographs of the strawberries covered with a thick layer of green and white fuzz. Because I couldn't remember exactly how much I'd paid for them, and they had since changed their vendor, he agreed to refund me 2.50 GBP based on the then-price of ONE box of strawberries. He then, instead of refunding me 2.50 GBP, just gave me one free grocery item (a carton of milk which was, coincidentally, LESS than 2.50 GBP). He did all of this while moaning about the inconvenience of having to resolve the issue and shaking his head at me as if it were my fault that the store had sold me rotten produce. I've shopped here more than once and on a separate occasion, I had to ask the cashier to void a transaction and the same manager ended up having to help. He took his time getting to the till, griped about having to void a my purchase for a solid 10 minutes, and proceeded to blame everything he could possibly think of, on me-- including his own mistakes while punching things into the register, the fact that he had to open the cash drawer, the fact that he had to explain why he was voiding the transaction to his employees ("How am I going to explain this to people?"), the fact that other customers started to arrive ("Look, other customers are coming and now I can't close because I'm doing this for you"), the fact that it was late in the evening and he needed to get home, the fact that the store was closing in "15 minutes," (the store was closing in 45 minutes) and the fact that he couldn't deal with the 'complicated' request of voiding a transaction, etc. I stood there in silence until his 5th or 6th passive aggressive comment, when I said, "sir, if it's this complicated, you could have just refused to void it," at which point he scowled and barked, "No, I had to do it, because you are the customer!" Childish, much? Frankly, there are plenty of other, better grocery options in the neighborhood, so take your business to another organic store: As Nature Intended, the Raw Store just around the corner, or Longdan Oriental Grocery on Kingsland Road. The manager here (I believe his name is JC) is rude and insufferable and should look for a new line of work if he can't resist penny-pinching over two cartons of strawberries, and is incapable of administering a minmimal level of customer service. read more

Although it has a thin cloud of smug in the air, it's still one of my favorites organic stores in London. Don't go there for fruits and vegs though, it is overpriced and nothing special, but the cheese selection (help yourself, you can taste a bunch!), the awesome variety of soups and the hard to find products make it worth it. Also try the cafe in the back (but I think they're two independent business, not sure) Yesterday I finally found my Kombucha drink, the "I-don't-know-why-but-I-love-it" weird drink that I use to have every morning when I was in San Francisco. It was a rip off but I bought it anyways 'cause I think The Grocery is the place for little luxuries. About the staff: it's hard to say 'cause they seem to have like twenty five people working there as it changes a lot, but there are like five cool and extremely nice people and other five straight faced ones that aren't able to smile and keep checking the signature behind your credit card for about seven minutes even if you go there almost everyday. You just have to be lucky. And don't take it personal, ever, not to ruin your day. read more

Overall it's a great place and is open later than post other shops like it. I often pop over for lunch - there are options off the shelf or made to order. In the made to order department, the steak sandwich should not be missed. If you just need to grab something and go, the salads, Japanese boxes and the yogurt tubs are amazing. They also have a fab assortment of coconut waters and interesting juices. The tofu selection is okay, but coming from California, I expect breath of offerings. This is the closest thing I've found in London to a local, California-style grocery store. In addition to all the health products (including green cleaning products like Method and Seventh Generation), they have a surprisingly good little Asian foods sections where you can get Japanese curry, miso, etc. If you are gluten-free, this is the store for you (any dietary issue, really). It is a destination worth coming to for me (I live a 20 min walk away, and have a Tescos in my building). Oh! Americans, they also have some of "our" stuff, like a variety of peanut and other nut butters, and stuff you'd find in Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. M'eh I think reviewing this place suddenly removes my cool. I didn't think much of this place when I first walked in \ looking for liquid henna. The helpful and friendly staff, after being a little baffled by the request pointed me in the right direction. I felt after that experience I didn't really know The Grocery well enough to review it fairly so I decided to pop back again. This time I used their little cafe at the back. If it had been a cold winter day and we had got to huddle at the cafe at the back of the Grocery it might have just about been good. Unfortunately it was one of the hottest days of the year and heavy brick and a massive kitchen in an enclosed space didn't lend a refreshing air. The breakfasty brunch stuff we got was overcomplicated and underwhelming. A sausage sandwich ended up being chipolatas (unsubstantial) which an unremarkable attempting to be interesting salsa. Inventive gone wrong. Unless it is really cold and everywhere else is shut I probably wouldn't bother. I also had a look at the product they had and, to put it bluntly, go to Waitrose (better selection, cheaper (and it is rare to say that) and fresher). I do love The Grocery - it provides me with most of my office snacks, as well as my growing herbal tea collection. If you're looking for anything organic or health food related, the chances are they stock it. They sell lots of fresh fruit and veg, including an impressive variety of squashes. When I'm there, I usually stock up on seeds, nuts, kale chips, and other things that will stop me snacking on potato crisps and chocolate in the office. They also offer a variety of lunch items like quinoa salad and vegetable frittata, and a few good wines and craft beers. It loses one star as it's just a little bit overpriced, especially the bread and some of the veg. read more

In an area plagued by Tesco Metros, those bizarre little Tesco/cornershop hybrids that seem to stock everything and nothing, it is most refreshing to stumble upon a bona fide health food shop that fulfills all your sanctimonious food needs. Dr. Karg's overpriced emmental and pumpkin seed crackers? Tick! Method all purpose, non-toxic cleaner so the puppy doesn't die when it licks the floor? Tick! Miso soup in myriad varieties? Tick! I'm sold. But then, you had me at Dr. Karg... I was delighted to find this little gem near our dance studio. This medium-sized organic store has a great selection of shelf-food and essentials, although the produce section is quite small. As a soup person, I was delighted by the variety of home-made soups. I was also impressed with the labeling, it was clear what was vegan/veggie/glut-free. I'm a big fan of The Grocery for one key reason: they have reasonably priced gluten-free beer and stock my favourite, St Peters. However, there is more to it than that, they stock a whole array of food and drink and even do things like gluten-free gnocchi which is impossible to get anywhere. I wouldn't do a weekly shop here as some of the food is expensive but it's perfect for the odd luxury item or hard to get gluten-free items. They also have a lovely little cafe area where you can drink in either wine or beers chosen from the chiller. You do have to pay for corkage fee but it costs no more than you'd pay anywhere else and the choice of beers available outweighs any negative on paying corkage. The cafe seems to be a little-known secret as its almost always empty. I've been for a drink with a friend on a Friday and it's the perfect little retreat from the hustle of bustle of Shoreditch which you re-join as soon as you leave The Grocery. read more

Back when the only organic shops you'd frequently come across were Planet Organic and Fresh and Wild, I stumbled across a new shop on Kingsland Road called The Grocery. As a typical Londoner who romanticises the idea of those shops with local farming village sounding names, aged wooden floors and simple wholesome foods in baskets, I was immediately drawn inside. You get that fleeting sense of being in Hertfordshire or The Black Country, without having to bother venturing outside of the M25. So far, so perfect. The prices are sadly similar to those of Fresh and Wild et al, so not very credit-crunch friendly, but they do have a great range of the kind of things I need each week, like afalfa, decent-looking, rich red tomatoes that don't look anaemic like the ones in supermarkets, reassuringly muddy and generously sized heads of lettuce, quinoa and decent soy brands like Alpro and Bonsoy (you know there are some that taste like mud in a glasswhy do that to a customer?!), a promising wine, beer and perry collection; and a wide range of good old English cheeses. They also have a cafe out at the back for you to relax in and read your Sunday paper. read more

I've several times looked around here, then, being flat broke, gone out empty handed. Being a little richer this month I was at last able to buy bliss! I came out with three things on the 'I haven't had that for ages' list: Kallo tomato and herb stock cubes, chocolate soya desert and jar of barley miso (complete with instruction not to worry if stuff grew on the top!). Wonderful! Yes, the prices are not exactly cheap, but I'm still not exactly rich, and I found a few things The store is also lovely. Old white supporting columns, brick walls and woodblock floor. They have a little café area where apparently you can get a massage several days a week (I think it was £10 for 15 minutes). There was also a cat wandering about. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they are usually quite quick to help me find what I need and even provide me some information about how to use it. I visit here frequently and always leave inspired to eat healthier and to cook something amazing. A huge grocery store that does what it says on the tin. Tons of lovely organic products and a nice big selection of yummy cheeses. You can easily spend a while perusing the aisles here and more easily spend a whole heap of money on one meal! They also have some lovely wines on offer and lots of fresh meat. I say fresh, I did once come home with what turned out to be not at all fresh chicken. They were happy to rectify it but it was a bit of a pain so do check before you leave! Since moving to the area, I had been a daily customer of this shop. On my first visit, an older male employee (called JC)- whilst ringing up my order and packing my grocery tote-noticed that it might be a bit heavy, reached over the till, grabbed my arm very hard and told me that I was fat and thick enough to handle the heavy bag. Despite this incident, I was encouraged to return by the warm and friendly female staff at the grocery. Namely Mona and Lucia, who were always friendly and helpful in creating a safe space for me to shop. Cut to November 15, as I was paying, I asked for a receipt, as I always did. The woman at the till threw it in the bin. I assume it was an accident, but then she couldn't find it. With the queue getting bigger and approximately 5 minutes of her searching for the receipt, I asked if there was someone available who could reprint my receipt. Enter Zaiyer. The second of two older male employees to harass and (verbally) assault me. He came up to the till, took my bag of groceries, dumped it all out and started the process of ringing my items through again. I expressed that this was not appreciated. I told him that this was extremely inconsiderate and inconvenient. He then proceeded to yell at me. I took the groceries and left, with him aggressively chasing me out of the door and quite a way down the pavement continuously yelling at me. I rounded the corner and decided to go back to the shop to return the items, with Zaiyer's behaviour being completely unacceptable to me. He snatched the bag from me and gave me a cash refund with no receipt, refusing to process the return via my original payment method (card). I returned home, shaken and upset, and contacted the shop manager, Linda, via their Instagram account. I described the situation and the previous one and expressed hope that there might be a way forward. Linda responded very quickly and apologized profusely. She ensured me that she was taking the matter very seriously, that this would never happen again. She offered me a variety of solutions, including telling me the employee schedule so that I may avoid the two men on future visits, meeting with me personally to find a solution, having another manager- Michela- accompany me through the shop and assist me at the till, ensuring that the female employees would keep an eye out for me and help me if needed, as well as asking me what if any solution would work best for me. She assured me in no uncertain terms that the two men, JC and Zaiyer would stay away from me, that I was happily welcome back in the shop, and that they valued my business. Feeling bolstered by Linda's kindness and understanding, I slowly began to go back to the grocery. I would normally avoid the two men, or avoid the shop altogether if I saw either one of them before I entered. I would often ask the female employees to assist me at the till. On December 12, I was quietly browsing the shop when suddenly from behind me came Zaiyer, he got really physically close to me very quickly and confronted me, telling me in a rude and aggressive manner that I was not welcome in the shop, that he had a witness (he kept repeating this), etc. I have video evidence of the tail end of his verbal assault. Needless to say, I was in complete shock. I left feeling violated, terrified and shaken. I have considered with filing a formal complaint against this business because of the actions of JC and Zaiyer. The severity of their behaviour should not go unchecked. I feel it's my responsibility to recount this publicly to make customers aware that they may be harassed or assaulted while shopping there. I will never return to this previously beloved local shop. I now order the items I previously regularly purchased from Amazon, and make a point to buy my food items at the many weekend markets in London. read more

The selection is pretty good for the size, it's a nice space and overall makes for a pleasant shopping experience - until you see that price tag, that is. Great mid-sized eco-green-organic grocery store in Shoreditch. The prices are a bit too high for me to go here regularly, but when we are in the vicinity for Vietnamese and like on Kingsland Road, this is a very useful place to stop in for a variety of items that can be hard to come by in a standard supermarket (e.g., miso; good selection of veggie sausages; decent bread). The fruit-and-veg looks fine, but too expensive: If you want organic I would recommend getting a weekly box from Abel and Cole instead. Useful for vegans/vegetarians looking for a variety of items that might be hard to come by elsewhere. Reminds me a bit of one of the upmarket green groceries stores you see in the States. read more

Excellent impression of what every corner shop in London would be like if we were all the hyper-earth concious organic green warriors we really should be, but aren't. Pricey, but the wide range of homemade and herb-tinted lovely things make up for this. There is good fresh bread, lots of cheeses, very fresh fruit and veg, tempting sweeties, a decent homeware section stocking Ecover et al, and helpful staff. One complaint would be the lack of visible pricing. I like to be able to browse a shop's shelves without having to bother the lad on the till every few seconds to ask the price of my recycled Peruvian Fairtrade quinoa toilet paper. The best organic market in my neighborhood and perhaps the best little cafe in London. The Grocery is a small market selling about anything organic one would want. They have an excellent choice of Japanese stables and sell the best hommus I have ever had. Additionally they sell an assortment of meats, fish, cheese, and bread. The cafe at the Grocery is a regular hang out for me. I go there at least once during the week and once on the weekend. They serve the best chicken sandwich I have ever tasted. The chicken is juicy and moist. I am not sure how they cook such a perfect roast chicken but I am not kidding when I say it's the best ever. They also do a fantastic breakfast. They get points for being within walking distance and stocking a wide variety of groceries, cleaning supplies and fresh veg and all of them are good for the environment. I haven't tried the little cafe in the back, but you can also find the cafe's sammies for take away in the refrigerated section.
