This Japanese restaurant had many positive reviews. They open on Sundays which I appreciated on this business trip. The restaurant had a nice family oriented vibe. They have a sushi bar. The nice mature Asian lady greeted and seated me. She was helpful when I inquired about the menu. I ordered: - Hotate (Scallop) nigiri sushi - Tobiko (Flying fish roe) nigiri sushi - BBQ Duck Bento Box (served with miso, rice, veggies, prawn and veggies tempura and Edamame) They served the miso soup first. It was part of the bento box. This miso soup had a generous amount of seaweed but no tofu. I was a bit surprised. On the menu, you can order miso soup on its own or miso soup with tofu. The flavour was perfectly balanced, and I appreciated the seaweed. The ingredients of the sushi were very fresh. I loved the texture and sweetness of the big piece of scallop on the nigiri sushi. The tobiko was equally fresh. The sushi rice was also good. They give a good amount of sliced ginger and wasabi on the side. The BBQ duck bento box was a fusion influenced by Chinese cuisine apparently. I have had the usual beef and chicken elsewhere. I thought I would give the creativity a try. It didn't disappoint me. The flavour of the duck was great. I didn't expect it to be too tender as it's the Chinese BBQ duck, yet it could be a little juicier. The rice in the bento box was cooked perfectly which went well with the duck. There were 4 decent pieces of tempura: 2 prawns, 1 zucchini and 1 yam. The tempura batter was nice, not greasy at all. The one interesting thing was that they don't have tempura sauce. When I asked for it, I was provided the same vinaigrette sauce already given with the bento box. This was the only drawback; otherwise, the meal would've been a 5-star. They are located near residential area and have easy and free street parking. read more

So Fabulous! Totally authentic sushi experience at this sweet little gem. So many menu items to choose from, all made fresh up front where anyone can watch. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. Quick service. Best sushi I've had on Vancouver Island and 20-30% less than other places. No wonder it's always busy. And a lovely patio (in season) as a bonus! read more

we are in Courtney every Thursday and this is a go to spot for us. It is excellent- friendly family and staff. A hidden gem! shhhh! They do a roast duck that is delis- they roast in house, tender and keeps us coming back for more. We have tried several of their sushi rolls -can't go wrong there either. read more

My husband and I just moved to Courtenay from Vancouver / whistler. We are used to being spoiled by sushi village (Whistler) and sushi sen (Squamish) We were quite nervous about any comparisons in the quality of food but this food was awesome! Everything was so fresh and delicious and the staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. Super warm atmosphere. Very quiet, so not to expect the social scene of sushi village or sushi sen but i do believe this place should be just as busy!! Five stars! Happy customers! read more

It was good. The sushi was well made and the service was decent. I would not come back though because the price point is too high for sushi in BC. It isn't much better than a middle ground sushi place in Vancouver, but is twice the price for almost all the dishes. read more

The sushi wasn't up to my level of par. I come from Vancouver...thus the benchmark for "Good Sushi" is very high. Lack of presentation, taste and service is less than desirable. Go somewhere else...save your money. read more

I didn't try and fish, usually I can tell if it's a hit or miss. Otherwise, I had a miso soup & veggie night. The food is good.

When me and my husband went into that place, the waitress told us to sit anywhere we want because she's taking a "take out" order, but after we were sitting there for 5 mins, she came by and said "can you move to a 2-people table because this table is for 4", although I was thinking why didn't you say earlier before we sat down, we stood up and moved to a "2-people" table. The most ridiculous thing is, I've never in my whole life waited for 50 mins after putting down the order (not even in French restaurant), FOR NOTHING! When my husband checked with them, they said they didn't even start to prepare our food yet. You think I ordered something complicated? 3 rolls and 1 shrimp tempera. 50 MINS........ This is my first time and last time going to that restaurant. read more
