Last night we went to the newly renewed Fugu Tek restaurant on Hwy 1. There are new owners plus a new interior It looks beautiful. I believe 2 Asian woman own it. The food was a 10. Delicious and some new items with a flair. The sushi chefs are 2 young men. Their sushi amazing. Anyway I had my all favorite soup Gyozasoup. Flavorful is not the word. Delicious mor like it the broth and vegetables fresh and new. A 10 for the soup. The ginger salads are large and bright green with delicious ginger sauce. I had a fresh scallop roll and an eel hand roll. If you could find a better word than awesome you are better than me. My husband has the Hawaiian roll with coconut shrimp pineapple and chopped nuts. The flavors came together beautifully. He also had the spider roll again delicious and my son had a crab roll beautifully presented. We will definitively make this restaurant our favorite for sushi. Oh they also have some very different items made quite different which we did not have a chance to try. We were quite full and sated. I adore this place. The food is amazing. I try to get something different each time, This time I had a Snowy Mountain roll $8.95. I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. This restaurant is small inside, but has recently been updated. If you are impatient or extra hungry I suggest ordering your meal "To go". It is very well packaged. . I enjoy studying the menu. Had the Stuart Beach and Fugu Tei rolls, all good. Wait times were better than average for a Saturday evening. Our waiter was very attentive and respectful of our privacy. TERRIBLE. If I could give a rating of 0 I would. A friend brought me to dinner at Fugu Tei on Saturday evening. When we walked into the restaurant on Saturday evening the hostess, an older woman wearing glasses, was absolutely rude. It wasn't until I mentioned that I was a restaurant reviewer for a newspaper that her smile appeared. The restaurant literally doles out pickled ginger and wasabi paste in tiny little containers. The wasabi was rolled up in the size of a single pea. Pickled ginger was literally three pieces of pickled ginger. Now let's talk about the food? The food was horrible. Terrible. The rice was crunchy on the sushi. TERRIBLY EXPENSIVE. $4 for a SINGLE piece of tuna sushi?!? When it is $5 for two pieces at Fujiyama? All I will say is this? Because I could say a LOT more? They serve a spicytuna roll with "sauce" that's not the same as a spicy tuna roll that is mixed with spicy mayo so be sure to ask for that because it's a big difference. Also the seaweed salad is good and the onion soup is a MUST try! I'll never have miso soup again. So, it's been 5 months since our last meal at Fugu with the new owners/chefs. We were disappointed with our last meal there and promised out of loyalty that we would give them another chance, as maybe they're still learning from the previous owner/chef. Well, I hate to say it, but the quality of the food is terrible compared to what it used to be. What once used to be the freshest rice and fish in sushi history and best Japanese restaurant ever is sadly gone. It's evident that the new owners are cutting corners with the quality of the ingredients, and with sushi afterall, having the best ingredients is everything. It's a hole in the wall in a strip mall but it is solid. We drive twenty miles to get there because we find that it's the most reasonably priced sushi restaurant around. It's easy to get gouged at sushi bars. The owner Tim, is an avid fisherman and really knows his fish. Like so many sushi chefs, we couldnt even get a nod from the guy for years. He actually smiles and waves at us now. Very fresh and some creative rolls. I recommend the Tim Special Roll, the Stuart Beach Roll, and the Spicy Crunchy Shrimp Roll. I've never even bothered with anything non-sushi on the menu aside from seaweed salad and Miso soup. The decor and the furniture is typical "open a restaurant with no money" style. The help is friendly, plain, adequate. Aside from having to wait in an incredibly small front area for a table, I've never had any bad experiences there and we have gone dozens of times. The sushi is just good. You can spend twice as much at a hip sushi place or go there. And make no mistake, Fugu Tei is nothing like the buffets or all you can eat places, it's hand made fresh with excellent fish. I don't want anyone to confuse my comments with el cheapo sushi. If this quality was south in PBG it would be packed every night. But since it's in ghost town Martin county you can usually not wait for a table. read more

A South Stuart go to for years. Other sushi places have come & gone, but Tim's place can't be beaten for the size of the portions and price. ALWAYS FRESH FISH. This place is well known in the area for their japanese food and it can be very busy on certain nights, so expect a little bit of waiting but it is certainly worth the wait. Service was nice and the waitress and chefs are friendly people. Lovely decor with fishes mounted on the walls and other tasteful japanese decorations. Very clean restaurant. Great sushi, fresh and well made. You can tell that the chef is skilled. What's the treasure in this restaurant is the amazing dishes made in the kitchen. Everything has amazing wok chi and comes out fresh and hot. Try the appetizers, they are all amazing. Trust me. Some are quite unique, like liver, but if you like the taste of liver, this is certainly the place to get it. The fried rice is delicious and comes out piping hot. Very generous portions. Don't forget to try the dessert. Their green bean and red bean ice cream flavors are genuine and are full of flavor. The tempura ice cream and cheesecake are delicious and freshly fried. We have not been to Fugu Tei since Tim sold to Pinky. For good reason -food quality went down the tubes. But last evening we decided to go back since we heard there were new owners. The sushi quality has definitely improved - very fresh and yummy. Not quite Tim's yet but certainly on the way. If you were a loyal patron then, you might want to give Fugu Tei another try. Read the local rave reviews. Ordered octo salad, jaws roll and my benchmark tuna avocado cucumber. lets jus call them Rice rolls. Like a gross amount. Enough rice left over on my plate to make 3 more rolls, zero exaggeration. I sat at the bar and watched every roll made like this. The Fish just doesent taste like anything. I pulled some tuna and albacore tuna out of my rolls to sample and it just tase like nothing. Texture was just ok. Glad i didnt order pricy sashimi like usual. Honestly most mediocre sushi ive ever had. Everyone claims to have the best tastebuds, im no pro but ive eaten at well over 50 sushi resturants and i just don't see how on a different day this place could be good. My husband and I had high expectations for this restaurant after reading the reviews. We even pushed back going to celebrate Father's Day until it was open (although there are numerous other places around us to eat). The drive is more than half an hour away but not a big deal since its on my husband's work commute. It wasn't crowded at all when we arrived and the wait wasn't long by any means. The waitress was very friendly and we saw a lot of her, which is a plus. I ordered miso soup (my go to) but it was a bit too salty. I have hits and misses with that soup anyway so not a big deal. I then ordered the JB roll (raw salmon, cream cheese, scallions) and my husband ordered the straight forward salmon roll, tuna roll, and escolar nigiri (which turned out to be a nice surprise because they gave him toro instead, which is fatty tuna. Delicious and very hard to come by since its rarely in season). The JB was...tasteless as far as the rice was concerned. The scallion had a very overpowering onion flavor so that was the dominating taste in my mouth and it wasn't too pleasant. My husband's rolls, although much more simpler, were tasteless as well. Basically nothing was seasoned to draw out the natural flavors of the fish. They did a great job cooking the rice, rolling it, and the fish was fresh, but the umami wasn't there. I think our 1 year old was the only one to enjoy his food- tempura fried shrimp and French fries. There are closer sushi places that we enjoy and I think we'll stick with them in the future. read more

First, I must say we will return to this restaurant, despite all the mix ups that I will describe. All the people who worked here were very nice, and helpful, and were trying their best. But due to the inexperience of most of the front of house staff, lack of a manager, no sight of the owner, the place was very chaotic. The friend that took me to this restaurant had been 3 times before and always had a good experience. When we walked in, the place was packed, and we got the last open table. All staff were running around wildly trying to keep up. No one took our order, so we finally called over one of the running wild persons who did take our order. This is 1/2 hour after arriving, with just water sitting in front of us. My age tofu arrived first, and was very good. After some time, my kappa roll arrived. All this time my friends miso soup and salad never arrived. So we asked for it, and it was brought to the table. Turns out, the soup, after taking a sip, was not miso soup, but onion soup, (which was not ordered nor does it come with the meal). The soup was not hot, nor was the green tea that was brought to the table. After about 45 minutes or more, we inquired about my friends dish, and were told that it would be out shortly, and that the kitchen had made the order with white rice instead of brown rice. All the while the restaurant was chaotic as there seemed to be no system in place. We paid the bill and left. No one said Good Bye, or Thank you as we left. We will return to this restaurant as the food was good, and the people very friendly and nice. This restaurant was inspected on May 3, 2016 and this is what was found, (below). 15 of these 17 violations were corrected 1 week later, but the restaurant needs to put a Food Safety program in place to avoid these on going failures.
