They changed the location at the last minute. I brought my daughter 10 minutes early to the location in the email and on the website, which was boarded up for construction. I called for information and they gave me the wrong directions to the new location. They told me to pay for 1 hour of parking for an orientation, but staffers handed me a sheet of paper, and told me no parents pas this point about a minute after I paid for parking a second time. Didn't I see their email? They had emailed me no less than 40 times in the past 2 months, but no indication of a location change. So disorganized. Don't bother. read more

My son attended the iD Tech Camp at UC Berkeley for one week (in 2014), and it was fun, but the content was not special or very good. They get one star because my son did have fun, and the instructors/all college students did their best. I would say, please read the reviews in yelp and Google before you make a decision, and research local options. I feel there are alternatives that are either much better for less money, or the same for FAR less money. Either way, a win for you. I was expecting a lot for the money they charge, almost $930/week with no boarding. But, it was the same as what you can find for far more reasonable cost in many city rec computer classes for kids. We have done many other summer camps and classes in similar topics. The sky high $$$$ cost is in the fact that they fly college students from out of state, to be instructors. (!!!) Also the rental of these well known college campuses is not cheap. So just a word of caution, your kid will have fun, but it is expensive because you are helping to pay for out of state instructors and rent. Also if you child is really looking to learn, they might not even have fun, because they will not learn that much. On a side note, we were also surprised to find that the kids were crammed into a small meeting room, (looked like bottom spare room in an older dorm?) packed with folding tables, folding chairs, and laptops with different size mice, chairs and keyboards. They often can not make sure the fit is good for each student, because it is such a temporary setup. My son (and a couple other kids) had a computer with a short mouse cable, so b/c of the way the table/power outlet was arranged, they couldn't give him any extra slack to pull the mouse forward. So he had to use the mouse in an awkward position for the week. When it is a full-day program, you need to make sure the equipment can be more properly setup. But it is seriously such a temporary setup, the poor (college kid) instructors are doing the best they can with the stuff they are given, but they can't customize it for your kids. So don't expect a glamorous computer lab. (Of course, it is a matter of perspective. By third world standards it is a great setup. But by US suburban standards, it was disappointing). Unless the university gives iD Tech access to campus computer labs, the facility your child uses will be a very temporary, quicksetup type deal. I wrongly expected from the high price, and the UC Berkeley setting, that my child would be in a nice computer lab, or at least in the UC computer lab. It was very disappointing. I have seen similar content in many local city rec classes and independently run learning centers. The instructors were all very young college students, very nice, good kids, very enthusiastic. That is why your child will have fun - the instructors are doing their very best, with limited hardware/space resources. They also spend a lot (a LOT) of time playing video games and even games outside during breaks and after lunch, which is great, but not what I am expecting or paying for, from what iD Tech claims in their marketing material. Definitely not worth the money, unless you are working parents with resources that don't care that you are over paying, and just need a full day program and to be able to say your child is at summer camp at Berkeley or Stanford. If you don't mind driving and are looking for higher level STEM classes, we had a much better experience (in the SF Bay Area) at Bellarmine Prep (in San Jose) and The Athenian (in Danville), where summer classes cost about half what iD Tech charges and were taught by real MS and HS teachers with experience, and in real classrooms. read more

This review is for the SF State location as I can't find it listed on Yelp, this will only be their 6th year doing it so it's fairly new there. My 11 year old son did a week of the 3D Minecraft class and loved it! The teachers all had positive attitudes and taught him new techniques in doing what he loves best. They also had outdoor time and lunch in the college's cafeteria. My son said that the food was good and lots to chose from. Tomorrow is already his last day which is sad, but I promised he could do it again next year. They also have overnight option, but we'll see if he's ready for that next year. Definitely a good program and very organized with checking in and out, and sticking to a schedule but having fun! read more

This overnight camp at UC Berkeley was overpriced and not fun at all. My son did think his teacher was good, but the overall vibe of the camp and the activities outside the classroom were depressing, boring, and poorly planned. There was little to counterbalance all the screen time, even though the cam description suggested there would be organized outdoor athletic activities in the afternoon. read more

Zero stars. This review is for the iD Tech Camp at Standford University. My 9-year-old and her friend signed up for the overnight camp. They did the photography and publishing program. The dorm rooms are not up to standards cramped, filthy and smelly. Apparently, there must have been bugs in the room. My child and her roommate came home with bugs/ lice in their hair. It was a terrible, horrific event for the girls to go through given the price and how highly we thought of the name and brand. I am EXTREMELY disappointed and disgusted that we had spent a large sum of money to have our child stayed at a place that is comparable to third world condition. I had even asked her friend to come along for the program because we thought for the price and brand it should be a nice experience for the girls. We were surprised by a situation that was too late to back out. Our families spent an average of 10-12k every summer for our daughters' programs. We believe in providing the experience, learning and quality for their growth. We expected quality from Alexa/ ID Tech, but were completely misled. We lost respect for this organization. The quality certainly did not match the price charged. For the price, the kids shouldn't have to stay in a bedroom without air conditioning, dirty carpets, and a less than acceptable room size. No toilets, just a sink that worked off and on. I am so very disappointed and angry at myself for leaving my child there. The camp cost as much as a 5-day vacation for both my husband and I in Cancun! And for that, I expected not to spend 6 six weeks afterward and more money to remove bugs/ lice from my child's hair. read more

Our 8 year old girl went this past summer and had an ok time. I was blown away to find that for the money they have all the campers from different camps working in one huge room. When instruction is given 6 kids had to crowd around one computer. If you were stuck in the back...bummer. I expected they would have a room with the computer screen projected on an overhead board for lessons. Also, not the best to have young kids mixed with all the older for rallying "camp" activities. My daughter found it incredibly intimidating. I did appreciate that at the end of the camp the teacher individually recognized each child and "celebrated" their unique programming talents. read more

Our son has attended this camp for over 3 summers and this is by far the best summer camp that he's experienced. The counselors are smart, engaged and really work with all the kids. They're technical, geeky, and spunky (like all your typical camp counselors) ... all a the same time. He attended the day camp program (not the overnight) as we live just across the bay and he still felt very welcomed in the group. He's attended a number of other tech camps in San Francisco and this was by far his favorite. ID Tech uses software that is commercially available so he's getting real world experience. When he is stuck on a problem, the counselors are very helpful in guiding him through the process. Because of the low student:teacher ratio, he feels he's getting the attention and help he needs to create and work on his projects. ID Tech has a number of camps across the US. However, as Berkeley alumns, we like sending him to the UCB Campus. Go Bears! Highly recommend if you're looking for a quality tech camp for your child. read more
